Alright, here's the deal. My comp is a Pentium IV 800 mhz w/ 64 mb RAM. Why in God's name is my game runnin choppy as all hell?!?! I cant deal with it, I can't even play the game worth anything. This is seriously pissin me off since i drove 35 miles at high speed to get to EB before it closed on me tonight and now i cant even play the game!! ARGH!!!

Any details on video card, DirectX version that might help the boys?

You could try installing the DirectX that came with EU, or killing off as many TSRs as possible, if you haven't already done so.

:)

My game runs properly , even on a 330mhz machine with just 64mb. I do free up as much memory as possible before starting the game though. Only 'problem' is that with the game set at a somewhat higher speed (never play real fast) and with a lot of wars going on at once, it sometimes stalls for half a second or so, but turning down the speed does wonders.

Probably that's what you should try.

I had a little of the same problem, the game would get a little choppy after I had played some hours (it still does) but I learned to live with it :) Try enabling Fog of War, that should free loads of memory!

I installed DirectX 8 that came w/ the game, fog of war is on........ what are TSRs??? Also, anyone have the game crash on them for no reason? Happened to me twice so far, i just dont understand what is wrong w/ my computer, its new! Compaqs are terrible, never buy one i tell ya!! Video Card is nuthin special, just came w/ the comp. Should it be better? Please, i cant take this not bein able to play. The game is so choppy, i put on max speed at it takes like an hour to get to the year 1496, which is as far as i've gotten w/o a crash!!!!!!!

TSR = Terminate & stay resident programs. Usually, they live in the tray on your taskbar, and you can right-click on them to deactivate them. They take up a chunk of memory, and they also seem to argue with EU: I have had several spontaneous crashes which I think are due to them (never happens when I remember to switch them off).

I've never heard of this choppy problem before though. Anyone? Patric?

Yeah, Jas,

Look at the 'Memory Leak' thread in this section, which is an extension of a few other discussions of this problem over the last month that the European players have already seen. It probably is a thing that can be overcome simply by bludgeoning it to death through the blunt instrument of some extra RAM. Extra RAM is obviously not the ONLY problem, but it may be a saving grace. See my post under TRD's other thread on this same subject in this same section...

It is also certain that there are some quirks to the American release that are not in the European versions, but this MEM/jerky issue is NOT unique. I have not done it yet, but maybe will next week reduce the slowest machine I have to 64 megs and see what it does. Right now 128s run the game great, and the 256 runs it great. I think I will also see if I fire enough of the resident programs up if it will screw up. I have one sneaking suspicion as I comb through all these posts though... The more often I see GEForce and ATI vid cards, and 'Live' soundcards, the more often I see problems. This may simply be a random result, and perhaps our 'EU-Jerky' will end up being a condition where there are user-machine mem limits set to some wack-ball setting and no real 'beef' at all. <g>

If you have W98 the best way to disable TSRs (some aren't even shown in the taskbar, Most notably MS office stuff) is to enter Startmenu/run/msconfig.
On the first (general) tab select selective startup.
Uncheck Process Config.sys & Autoexec.bat (they are not really needed anymore and it will make your comp boot A LOT faster)
Then click the Startup tab
Here is where you disable all those annoying TSRs
What should be left on is

ScanRegistry (optional)
TaskMonitor
SystemTray
LoadPowerProfile (twice)
Machine Debug Manager (optional?)

+ usually your Sound and Printer drivers

Everything else is most probably surplus crap slowing down your comp.

I would however recomend that you disable one or two only at a time, not to remove something without knowing exactly which one it was that bombed your system.
