I've read that Snowball is spending a lot of time doing research on historical personalities of the CK era (definitely one of the more anticipated features of the game for me), and will include MANY of these in the game. In the mini-FAQ I found the following:

- Historical characters are for 1066, after that dynasties breed random children ~ sergei
- When you start in 1066, you not only have ca. 1000 actual characters around, you also have their family trees down some four or five generations (major pain in research since the earlier you go, the more contradictions so you need to triple-check things). This way you don't start with a new, clean page. You already have legitimate, historical claims, relations, etc. ~ sergei

1. Do these characters include only the starting monarchs and their ancestors? Does this mean that many of the more notable people of the 1066-1453 era will probably never appear?
2. Can we assume that, as of now, 1066 is the only planned start date / scenario?
3. Do these pre-1066 characters have any other effects on post-1066 gameplay? Considering that so much time is being spent on them, it would almost be a shame if they didn't.
4. I'm assuming all Christian dynasties will be randomly generated after the game starts, but will this apply to Muslim and other non-playable nations as well? Or will they follow history?

Dunno how well these questions can be answered right now, but I'd like to hear what people think.

1. Yeah, I think that's pretty much the way the game is going to work.
2. I certainly hope there are going to (eventually) be other scenarios to play! If they're not included in the game, I imagine some intrepid modders will research the appropriate historical characters and design scenarios starting at later dates.
3. I think the effect of the pre-1066 characters is to establish a pre-existing family tree, to determine the various relationships between the families of different kingdoms, and to give some monarchs dynastic claims over the lands of others.
4. Well, more or less randomly . . . I think the Christian kingdoms will be affected by the player's actions a bit, too. ;) As for the non-playables, I think somewhere a while ago Sergei had said that the Papacy, for example, could be controlled for periods of time, with the player putting his candidate forward as the Pope. If this were to happen, there certainly wouldn't be a historical line of Popes in the game. As for the Muslims or Mongols, I'm kinda curious myself how they're going to handle that.

1. From what I know, yes.
2. According to older information CK will be released with one scenario, the 1066, and further scenario(s) will be available later. Dunno if that has changed.
3. The ancestry of the 1066 character for the backdrop for their dynastic struggles from the start of the game.
4. Nothing is known yet.

IIRC Sergei said the AI will apply to Muslim as well as non-player Christian dynasties. So the Muslim leaders will make dynastic/military/etc. choices in the same manner as the Christian monarchs.:)

hmm does that southern european kings and saracen kingdoms act like frankish kingdoms i.e mirror europeam ai kings????? shouldnt there be a different ai for saracens and eastern euro kingdoms as their pirorities and their culture and outlook was different???

My guess would be that the Muslim countries/dynasties are not playable because the do differ so much from the way things operate in th Christian kingdoms. So the AI can still do the same things for Muslims and Christians giving the same kinds of results without you being able to "look under the hood" and see that even though the results are the same the Muslims should go about things differently if you were to play them.

Confused yet? Thought so. Not a very good explaination.

AI Christians - have the same governmental set up that you experience as a player of a Christian monarchy.

AI Muslims - should have a different governmental set up but since you don't get to play them the AI can operate them the same way as the Christian countries and you would not know. The result will be the same - taxes collected, marriages arranged, armies recruited - all you will see is the results and not the method.

And that, friends. is the Sonny explaination of why the AI can handle both Chrtistian and non-Christian dynasties. I'm sure someone else can explain it better.:)
