HOI crashes when loading

I have read the sticky "Self help guide". I have tried everything there except changed cache size for CD, disable joystick, disable soundcard and lower the sound acceleration. Mostly because I couldn't figure out how to. I do not have a joystick

I also ran dxdiag.exe and all tests were succesful. I will copy the result from dxdiag at bottom of this post.

Game: HOI, Panvision, 1.06c
OS: WinXP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2 (5.1 build 2600)
Computer: Small Swedish firm, EIS XA, but some new components, with AMD Athlon XP 2200+
RAM: 768 MB
Free disk space: 11,4 GB where HOI is installed
Video: XFX AGP GeForce4 Ti4600, driver 6.14.0010.6177, 128 MB video RAM and Philips 107E (107E1) monitor
Sound: SB Live! Wave, driver 5.12.0001.3300
DirectX: DirextX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)


I have also reinstalled the game at least five times, trying different things after each install. I even tried reinstalled Windows XP and all updates recommended from "Windows Update".

The problem is that I cannot run the game. Everytime I try my computer reboots. I only get that box with sending an error report to Microsoft. After I decline sending that report my computer reboots. When I see the loading screen, after the movies, initializing sound and initialzing interface seems to work. It is during initializing graphics that the reboot happen.

I had no big problems with running HOI before I installed Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. Some crashes to desktop now and then, but nothing I couldn't live with.

I live in Sweden if that makes any different in what help I can get .

Check the properties of the Windows Display settings, color depth.

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.

Especially #1 for your situation.

You may have trouble in game because you have VIA drivers which are known to be buggy. They should not be causing this problem though.

Renaming the AVI-folder I have tried. It is in the "Self help guide" . If it can be of some help the movies in the beginning runs fine, if I don't change the name.
Turning off everything in the system tray besides the clock I have also done. I forgot to mention that I had. I read in the EU2 forum about a person that had a similar problem, with Service Pack 2, who got that suggestion.
16-bit color I have also tried. I am not 100 % sure of when I tried it though. Could have been before I had implemented all the other suggestions. I will retry it, but not today...

...because I am playing HOI again!

I formated my c: drive and reinstalled WindowsXP. I then used Windows Update until I got Service Pack 2 as recommended update. Then I stopped, without downloading and installing Service Pack 2, and now I can play HOI without a problem.

If I may ask, VIA-drivers. I found them under System Devices in the dxdiag text. I managed to figure something out about what they are doing by reading, but not much . Is there anything I could do about those drivers? I mean having drivers that are known to be buggy controlling the CPU doesn't feel good at all.

The AVI rename does not have to do with th movies playing, at least not 80%.
THe idea was you needed to try all three things at the same time.
SP2 is probablely a good idea.
VIA drivers, not a lot you can do with XP. You could try a quick read through jpd's support FAQs, IIRC they do touch on the problem.

it may be a problem with service pack 2. the service pack closes all ports to communicate instantly and you have to open them manually, e.g. for internet, multiplayer games etc. there are many problems i heard from. the only way to decrease the problem, at the end of the installation, after rebooting, you have to deactivate the firewall instead. it may be, that hoi looks for free port to go online, if you want to play a multiplayer game. it may be, that hoi do it in the exe file hardcoded. there must someone from paradox answer this question.

As I understand it, SP2 has a heavy focus on security but also includes DirectX updates.
I assumed reinstalling the system wouldn't be an option, saw the current display settings and couldn't see that changing the display settings had been tried (it isn't in the self help guide, but the other things are even if the description on the AVI-folder trick is not described as a general thing to try). Trying one thing at a time would better show what the problem's solution really was. It seems reasonable to suggest starting with the simplest thing, even if I got the feeling that the inital poster indeed had more than average computer knowledge.

Anyway, I have to realise that, a system re-install is not necessarily an obstacle for a real HOI fan!

VIA-drivers there is and VIA-drivers there will be. I haven't had any problems before. I will try installing Service Pack 2 again and make a try with all the things you suggested Castellon. I am 100 % certain that I have tried renaming the AVI-folder with nothing running in the system tray at the same time. I do not play multi-player HOI.

Good luck, also remember the 16BIT.
You could also try setting both the desktop and the game to the same resolution, I would suggest the lowest the game can be set to.

Not if it requires more than one of those things to be done to solve the problem.
If you just did them one at a time you would think none of them worked and leave in frustration. It has happened.
I do things in a specific way for specific reasons, reasons that have proved effective.

Check XP's event log with the Event Viewer, after you get another forced reboot. If it says something like 'Infinite loop', then you can be 100% sure that the VIAAGP.SYS driver is the culprit.

If that's the case and you can't/won't switch to non VIA drivers, then there is really nothing else you can do besides tweaking the AGP and memory timing settings until HoI stops crashing.

It worked out fine, thank you again. Most certainly it were the 16-bit color in combination with renaming the AVI-folder that made the difference.
