The man makes a good point about Russia having to defend its beaches.

I'd suggest removing them all (keeping St. Petersburg and Sevastopol only in Europe). They have trouble raising armies due to IC difficulties as it is, and to have them defend against unrealistic amphibious assaults is a bit silly.

Have to register a dissenting voice here.

There is nothing at all unrealistic about Germany staging amphibious assaults on Russia's Baltic beaches. At least the German General Staff didn't think so prior to the Schlieffen plan.

A level of control of the Baltic permitting sea-borne assaults on Russia was one of the selling points for the expansion of the German fleet. And in the Russia First planning that preceded Schlieffen a number of amphibious assaults along the Baltic coast were seriously contemplated.

Yes, the presence of the beaches does make it tough for Russia. But it was tough for Russia.

Whoops! Sorry. Too late as usual.

naval assaults

i do not dispute that ambitious naval assaults were planned by people in offices; after all how to legitimize all these military expenses.... * The fact however, is, that it was logistically not possible in 1914 to organize succesful naval / amphibious assaults on this scale. When German troops moved into Finland in 1918 they could use Helsinki and other ports to land in after the collapse of Russia. It was impossible to land in Estonia during WWI when Russia had not collapsed... look what happened to the ANZAC forces in Gallipoli (arguably the best navy / army in the world) who were intially pinned down by a few Turkish (!) militia - like regiments. Before they got their supply in order, more and more Turkish forces moved in the area, started digging trenches all over the place and voila...
Maybe you can land, but your org should go down so fast (very limited re-supply capacity) that these kind of manoeuvers should become de facto prohibitive.

The British amphibious invasion of Basra was, on the other hand, entirely successful. So was the Japanese landing at Tsingtao.

Is it feasible to give a much bigger negative modifier to naval invasions, and tweak the 'defend the beaches' section of the AI, rather than make amphibious invasions absolutely impossible?

Great work indeed fellows! :)

I ought to say a special 'thanks' and 'well done' to Spocky, who went to the trouble of translating the installation instructions into German. :)

They are now available on the first post of this thread.

more playtesting

So now I'm playing with the UK in jan. 1914 ; by august 2nd Ger/AH are at war with the entente; being a Germanophile with Hannoverian roots I decide to join the Central powers. This at the expense of no dissent !!!

Then the AI goes mad: when Germany decides to invade Belgium, I get a request to join the entente or stay neutral while I have already joined the central powers; since I click neutral, the French AI then decides to suddenly join me, Germany and A:H against Belgium and Russia. Well, guess who's gonna win this one? The previous German declaration of war against France did not even matter. I believed you could not leave an alliance when you were at war in HOI 39-45 ; but here everyone does so at will - Italy in August 1914 ; The French this time; or sometimes the Russians. Something is therefore wrong with the AI. And Again, no German forces East of Berlin when Germany declares war on Russia. Should not happen...
Never experienced this in HOI WWII.

Obviously. I have added an extra condition to the British war entry event, which ought to stop such things from happening.

On another note, another big 'thank you' ought to go to Emp_Palpatine, who took some time out from Galactic Senate to translate the mod's installation instructions into French.

Those too, are now available on the first post of the thread.

I would also like to give thanks to Spocky and Emp. Palpatine (you better be crushing that useless Senate) for their contributions to the non-english speaking crowd.

I would say so. But the landing penalty must be quite big. As it works now UK always invades, takes and holds Istanbul which destroys the Ottoman possibilities to win. When playing Germany I have to station at least 6 divisions in Istanbul to make sure the 10+ division landings won't succed.

Perhaps having more coastal forts at all beaches is a solution?

huh... I'm ashamed of saying that, but I forgot a word in my translation.
Allenby, could you correct it?

In "Etape trois", in the first sentence, it should be writed "et ce afin d'éviter des conflits".

Sorry

I don't mean to nit pick.......I can't seem to download the mod. First time I tried to download, I got to about 96% and it said "could not connect to server", I tried it again and I had the same problem, I then tried the other mirrors and they don't seem to work at all. I have just tried it, but still no joy. And I was really looking forward to playing WW1....

Just dowloaded the other day. Allenby, that's one amazing mod. I can't even begin to imagine the work it has been to get this far. Way to go. It still has a distance to go before it's a balanced, historical simulation, but I'm sure it's getting there. Gas attacks! Kewl! :D

playtesting and the AI

The module still should be refined: if Austria does nothing or backs down in fall 1914, we still get 'war in europe !', and other august 1914 messages though there is no war (yet); if then war does break out due to the third balkan war in 1915 -which is good- it seems like French and Russian mobilizations happen instanteneously as if the AI wants to catch up all the events that should have taken place in the fall of 1914 and early 1915 but did not. This seems to completely weaken the German army... the only advantage it had and chance of winning was that it was a modern and huge standing army. If France and Russia mobilize immediately in 1915, they have no chance at all. Also, UK involvement immediately leads to dissent increases due to the bliockade as if it was going on for a while... Still, playing GERMANY, the central powers are doing relatively well until spring 1917 when without any reason or territorial loss Austria has PEACE! and drops out of the war, ceding territory to Rumania and Serbia. This just could not have happened without major military setbacks ; in addition the war only started in 1915... this to say that the AI continues to do weird things in terms of dropping out of the war suddenly or leaving alliances -and switching alliances- suddenly and abruptly. does not make a lot of sense... and then italy, russia, Austria and OE can all break down but France keeps on fighting on even when all of France is conquered. Why not allow the Germans to create a puppet regime and let the british fight on with the free french?
:(
Hope you can fix this one...
