With all due respect, but what complexity EU4 provide in reality? Balancing between social, economic and military aspect? Representation of soft power which can be used by you and on you? Balancing btw internal and external affairs? Maybe butterfly effect where one wrong solution in random event can lead to butterfly effect? No. All of so praised EU4 complexity is just number stacking in nutshell so in the end of the day participant could bet on bigger better doomstack (there is just nothing to do except war, so battle is sole system where some work was placed).

Personally I can't wait for EU5. Maybe someone see new PDX games as mobile version of sims - but that stuff gives immersion and make game less looking like excel sheet where cells sometimes change color while there 7 or 8 big stains on sheet.

OP here!

Hey, it's been a while! I'm surprised that my little rant blew up like it did with discussion and it's a relief to see that some people agree with me.

I do notice that opinions here seem pretty polarized between supporters of historical plausibility and supporters of the chaotic map-painting simulator that EU4 is today.

After the release of Victoria 3, my faith in paradox games being what i'm looking for has kind of evaporated. Obviously mods help a lot but they can really only do so much before they're just straight up making their own game.

My logic behind suggesting a "historical railroading" option is really just me trying to find a compromise that would be easier to develop and include than just overhauling the core mechanics of the game to actually make sense.

It seems like the PDX community has evolved to better reflect fans of the newer games leaving older HGS fans as a dying breed; me included.

PDX has always had a soft spot in my heart for creating my passion for history so my original post was more or less a glance back before my decision to move on from these games was solidified.

Developers move on from niche audiences to mainstream ones naturally and PDX is no exception. I just hope that the newer community finds love for these games and this studio like I once did.

Iv'e been ping-ponging an idea in my head for making a mod that allows you to turn on and off major historical events for individual nations even while in game to bridge the gap between what I want and what I have. It'd take a lot of work but the resources are out there. I want to be able to one day pick any date in the game and feel like history is actually progressing and I think I can make it work so keep a look out on the steam workshop one day!

I know that a lot of people disagreed with me and sometimes arguments can get a little hostile but this really is the best game community in the world; one that I hope isn't taken for granted.
