Boehm had a really good idea in Vnet yesterday evening. We have both been lamenting the fact that Campaigns are started but never finished. We’ve both been wishing for short scenarios with clearly defined victory conditions that can be played in one setting. So Boehm decided to set up a multiplayer game of napoleon’s ambition with the following house rules:
Two sides: France and the Anti-French collation. Members of the Anti-French collation are Austria, Prussia, Spain England and Russia.
The game is a French win if France at any time she has vassalage any 4 of the 5 members of the anti-French collation. The game is an allied win if they depose napoleon and restore the French monarchy. Anything else is a draw.
A player must accept vassalage if France has a 99% victory and occupy the capital. Vassalages may not be broken for 5 years. If a player is vassalage he must break with the anti-French alliance. If there are less then 6 players he may take over another Anti-French country provided it is not allied with France. The game actually works best with 4 anti-French players as this allows France to defeat a nation and briefly has it as a French ally as happened with Spain.
We did ran into a few problems however. In an intense war game like this lag is a killer. The problem is that at this tech level no ones moral ever break, if you don’t get to retreat because of lag your army is eliminated. Losing an army one can live with but in the Napoleonic wars leaders are critical. Austria only has one Karl, Prussia only has one Blücher, losing him due lag is just not acceptable. A house rule disallowing retreats would mean that the loser in any battle is eliminated. Just doesn’t feel right.
Also forts are just too big. The Napoleonic era was characterised by war of mauves: not endless sieges. Ideally we’d like to create a Empire in Arms scenario based on the age of revolutions but meanwhile there is a supposedly very good Napoleonic war scenario available for download at http://www.europa-universalis.com/depotdetail.asp?ID=110
Now all we are need is a few good players.
