The Long Winter

It is said that the world once was green - full of animals, trees and other plants. Great kings mustered giant armies and battled each other clad in radiant armor and armed with weapons of pure fire. Great fields of golden grains covered the landscape and provided food for everyone.

But then, winter came. The sea and soil froze and ice covered the palaces of great kings. The world’s greatest kingdoms all collapsed. A time of never-ending war, famine and death followed.

But we, here by the Smoking Sea, are blessed. The hot springs and the heat from the great Fireberg kept our lands relatively warm, and after a few years of continuous winter, the soil thawed and now we can grow crops every summer.

Introduction

In this game the players must work together in order to survive in a strange world covered in snow and frozen forests, with the only real population centers located around volcanic hotspots, where competition is fierce for the few resources available.

The players will start out as leading figures of a series of clans in a decentralized, tribal state, and must work with or against one another to attain power and secure their people’s future in this hostile world. Along the way we will create a unique culture fitting for the strange environment the clans live in, hopefully including crazy religious beliefs and weird technologies.

Just like my very first forum game, which was undoubtedly also the most successful one, this game will be sort of like a sandbox interactive IAAR based on Civilization IV with modifications. However, this time, we will start in the beginning of the classical era. The players can gain power through brute military force, owning land, running a business or through political intrigue. To begin with, the last leader of all the clans has suddenly died, and it is up to the players whether to establish a common government or remain divided.

I hope that we will also succeed in creating a unique culture for our civilization as time passes by.

...

So, would anyone be interested in this? Also, I'll put up a shorter title with the game thread, I just found it pretty hard to describe what category this game was.

Funny. I always wanted to host something like this. Beat me to the punch. Very interested.

Yes, hopefully this will be as awesome as Caveman to Cosmos! I thought that I might as well include a little poll to get some creativity going right from the start!

One goal of the game is to win power. Another is to create a unique culture in cooperation with the other players. Although we start out with the same culture in-game, the players who join at the start can decide themselves the traditions, history and culture of their own clan, since all the peoples of the Smoking Sea has come from elsewhere during the turbulent times of the Great Freezing. Then we’ll create a common culture as we merge into a single tribe/state later (that is, if we end up merging).

We start the culture creation thing with a vote:

1. Propose which language to use - this doesn’t have to be connected to the below. It can be a real world one or something else. This is where you can be creative! It will mostly be used as inspiration for naming things, places and people.

You can vote on any proposal someone else comes up with. Or your own, of course.

2. Which culture do we start out with? This will mostly just affect our ability to utilize different resources and affect how our people look in-game. Choose one of the following:
North American
South American
European
African
Middle Eastern
Asian
Oceanic

Mycenaean Greek!

For Agamemnon!

If we picked an Ameican or Oceanian, would we therefore not have horses, cattle, etc?

My slight favorite might be Europe, as I would also like to play a Celtic clan. Ua Deaghaidh Abu!

We can still get the resources, but for instance, an Asian or European civ would get stronger units from them than an Oceanian one.

In Caveman to Cosmos, we had English as language, but pure English, without borrowed words. It resulted in sort of LOTR-ish names and writings.

Language - Irish or a more general Celtic language drawing from the current ones (Welsh, Breton, Irish, Scottish, and Cornish).
Culture - Sort of impartial, I'll go with European simply because of my language choice.

Language wise, much as I'd love to see our society dominated by Gaelige I think practicality dictates English, as it's a language we are all conversant in. But an extremely open form of English with as many loan words and foreign names as anyone could want.

Let's go Uralic style to be interesting

Uralic was my second choice.

Well, it depends on how much Emilersej wants to do with it. If it's mostly just some flavor stuff (place names, naming conventions, and titles), then I don't think it would be too bad especially if Emil keeps the words in one of the first posts. If he wants to use it heavily and use it to name animals, weapons, objects, ideas, and the like then I would agree that English would work best otherwise we'd be constantly consulting the first post just to figure out that someone hunted a mammoth with a spear.

I was obviously not planning to write my updates in Uralic or Celtic. Names of people, places and a few other important things maybe (Who doesn't remember the odophezi?)

Obviously IN!

For Language i vote for japanese or a mix japanese/korean
For cullture i vOte asian, it give a way more varied naming scheme, cool clan naming and frankly time to do something different than teh stadard european or gaelic <.<
