What happened to the Knights of St. John after they beat the Turks at Malta in 1565?

They retained possession of Malta until 1798, when Napoleon Bonaparte conquered it while en route to Egypt (the French were kicked out by a native uprising supported by the British within a couple of years, but the Knights never returned.) The order still exists, but now concentrates on the humanitarian side of its mission under a variety of names and jurisdictions (the Knights Hospitaller originated as a hospital for pilgrims and crusaders in the Holy Land.)

Ever heard of the St. John's ambulance brigade? As far as I know they're related.

The Knights of St. John actually remain a sovereign country. They are a ummm building-state, kind of like a city state. They own a building or two in Rome under the name "Sovereign Military Order of Malta", and those buildings are where all of the citizens live and it's sovereign territory. They print their own stamps & passports. However, they do humanitarian & charity work now, and citizenship is by birth only.

I recentenly heard a story about one of the Princesses of Monaco who went aspecially to Rome , to one of the order's "Free Houses" to give birth to one of her childern.

Does that make the baby a Knight or simply a Monagasc (or what ever the are called)

oops I did it again. I should head for austria where I believe the last remnants of the TO to be.

Well, don't know where the TO is sitting at the moment, but until 1803 the Highmaster had it's residence in the "lovely" city of Bad Mergentheim and they possessed some land in the southwest of Germany.
For ambulances: I think todays Maltesians are catholic and St. Johns is protestant. But maybe this is only how it is in Germany.

The knights of St:John is catholic and only responisble to the pope. But during the reoemation one branch in Germany (the "Baliwick of Sonnenburg" more exactly), turned protestant. They disappeared after the secularization of its property in 1810 but Frederick William IV created a new confraternity of "Evangelical Johannittes" (1852).

The TO moved its recidence from Mergentheim to Vienna in 1805 and it is still situated in Vienna.

There is a certain link between the Knights of St. John and the Knights Templar, as far as I've read. Although this link remains cloudy at best, I'm sure that it is mentioned in the book "The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail" by Baigent, Lincoln and Leigh. It still remains one of the biggest conspiracy theory works ever... read it, and weep, laugh or nod. It's worth it...

Mostly laugh. Of course it could all be true!!!!! Whoahahahahahahaha!

Still, the sudden suppression of the Templars has never really been adequately explained by orthodox history, or rather the events surrounding it.

I think it been well explained, the French king was greedy and the Templars had become impoular so he framed them had them confess and took there posseisons in France. The est of Europe followed as a pack of hungry dogs, seems to be usuall human behavior really.

And of course there are links between them they was the two main knightly orders created to take and hold the holy land, and natural rivals. After the suppresion of the Templars the Pope gave them all of the Templars holdings, they had self to get the monarch of Europe to return it and that took some time (and did not always succede).

Look again-the machinations, the forced confessions etc. Something's not quite right here.

Papal support etc.?

It's not just the events but there ferocity-greed is one thing, and was certainly a factor, but still.

Rumours had it that the Templars knew some sort of great secret...
We can only speculate whether this was just a rumour from Phillipe Le Belle, or that they actually knew something that was not common knowledge. By 1492, Columbus had the Templar cross on his sails. More room for speculation here, innit? *fits of laughter*

Think I'll quietly drop out of this thread-I think there's something fishy there, but I'm afraid WFHermans'll wander in with some of his opinions and tarnish me by association! :D

Be seeing you!
