He frowns. Primary goal a Unity marriage, failing that an elopement?

"Pretty much."
Writing an elopement in a sci-fi setting can be a lot of fun. Escape/runaway options are so numerous and creative. :D

He points to the buildings. "Snipers. There, there and there." He points them out. I can just see them after it's pointed out.
Meanwhile, one of those snipers felt a chill run up his spine as he sees someone pointing him out. Maybe he calls C2 and tells them his position is compromised.

Our faces get as close as we can.

Our eyes close.

We both breathe in.

The door explodes open behind us.
Damnit adults! We're having a moment here!

The Midnight Gala, Part 4

Scipio Flavonius

In that moment, our eyes open in surprise, but we can't look away from each other. I lean towards Rivkah, and she presses her tongue into my mouth passionately, and we entwine our tongues.

Probably not very hygienic, but who cares?

In that moment, she's all I want.

She's all I'm thinking about, right up until I am hit forcefully on the head, I slam into the ground...

Dazed, I need a few seconds on the marble, and I look back at my bride and I see my father threatening her, sword out, hurling abuse at her.

Her mother is coming, her own sword drawn, held forward in a guard position.

My father sees her and turns back to me, he starts dragging me away. Ears are ringing like crazy. I try to get free. I start being able to hear again.

My father stamps on my chest. I can't breathe. "Boy, I have no idea what you were doing with that beast, but this ends now. You are never seeing it or Appia again after that stunt."

My eyes are fixed on my bride, trying to steady her tears, I croak out. "I love her, father."

Rivkah has her sword pointed at him, and she's advancing. Her mother and her father are taking flanking positions. It's three against one, poor odds at the best of times.

My father takes the only action available - his sword touches my throat. I try to wriggle away carefully and slowly. "Keep your distance, or I will finalise disowning him."

Appia stands at the top of the steps. "Order, order! Snipers, tranquilisers on my mark. No one moves." She alone moves, and faces my father. "Julius, this is insane. Scipio is your son."

"He is not marrying a harlot's daughter. Honestly Appia, do you think they are that stupid that they can't see what you are doing? You use them as a shield against the whims of Septima, usurp the rights of the father to secure their allegiance, to say nothing of your disrespect for the established way of appointing offices by handing out civilian posts to naval colleagues. You spit on the traditions that our heritage has passed down to secure your own position. At least Septima has the integrity not to deny her ambition to be a dictatrix. You engineer a crisis and use it to seize power. Our father would be ashamed of you."

Appia goes purple. "Don't bring up his behaviour. Our father divorced our mother so that he could ally the Ligarii by wedding a girl younger than I was, and then divorced her to gain the favour of the Licenii. What a bad alliance that was!"

He steps off me to round on her. "Yes. And who shot him exactly?"

"We don't know if he did get shot."

My father looks at an old man stood beside Naomi. "You were with Gaius, Caeso."

Caeso hums. "Not exactly. I signed on with Gaius specifically to defect to Life2.0 at the first opportunity. I last saw your father when he was escorting Marcus Licenius."

Naomi and Buri look at each other. Buri nods. "Then he might have got shot."

Appia and father look at them. "What?"

Buri sighs. "Gaius' brother threatened Naomi. So I put a bullet through his skull."

A Xenaya to his right follows. "And we shot the companions."

Especially when one of the elopers has legitimate access to starships. :)

Well... Those masks have got to be useful for something, right? Including enhanced vision is an obvious benefit.

Damnit adults! We're having a moment here!
They definitely were having a moment.

And on the bright side, they'll be able to slip away in the coming chaos.

That was quick. I love how Scipio and Rivkah just ignored Appia and Naomi/Buri's discussion of their marriage and went with it anyway.

Also, the fact that an explosion ruined the moment is great. This family issue might be an issue, though, especially given these recent revelations...

This will be fun for everyone. Cracks in the alliance are showing. Hopefully Appia and Naomi can smooth them over.

Wami's admission, while honest, changes the situation in the same way pouring petrol on a fire does.

Uproar. Julius takes a moment to process the information, then rounds on Appia, his sword shaking in his hand. "TRAITOR!"

He slashes wildly in Appia's direction, his fury ruining his accuracy.

Appia ducks and rolls sideways, whipping out her own sword as she recovers to parry his continued attacks, fighting defensively; she's in a dress against a man in armour, and she's afraid.

The clashing fades to the background as I realise Scipio is free. I run to him, hold his hand. He looks behind him, and I lift him to run with him.

Julius sees us run, and turns to pursue; Appia is holding her stomach. I get one last look at Mum as she's attending to Appia, but she takes a moment and smiles to us, and taps a claw on her ring finger.

Scipio pulls on me, dragging me back into the moment as Julius rallies his people into pursuing us. I quickly catch Scipio, and sweep him onto my back, like Dad carries Mum.

And then I run.

And I run, and I run.

They had pretty much already made their minds up on each other.

Yep. It's going to get even more complicated too.

This will be fun for everyone. Cracks in the alliance are showing. Hopefully Appia and Naomi can smooth them over.
It's not very much fun for Appia so far.

Understatement of the Epoch right here.

Ever play a French PC game called Haven? Sci-fi adventure story about a young couple who steal a spaceship so they can elope on an alien planet far from home. Painfully adorable art, acting, and story.

I'm getting some Haven vibes here.

No; my French is nowhere near good enough to play a game. I can remember enough that I could at least cope with going shopping, but much beyond that...

Well, Rivkah and Scipio don't necessarily need to steal a ship, but they have got to get off Brigantia. Which, as Scipio will explain in their next piece, is not going to be easy.

Scipio Flavonius Of Unity

"Attribius, I and my lady friend need a place to stay for today."

He smirks. "One bed, or two? The whole planet knows what happened, Scipio. You need a lot more than a place to stay."

"Yeah, you're right. We need to get off-world, as soon as we're with Rivkah's people, father can't touch me."

"Get in." He leads us into his home. We crash in the lounge. "Well, you went big, boy. Your father has already ordered the Transit Authority to detain you." He looks at Rivkah. "He can't stop you though, Rivkah."

She looks at him. "How does that work?"

"How much has your mother taught you about internal Olinbari family structure?"

"I know the father of the family has fairly unrestricted leadership."

"Yes. Hence why he can blacklist his son, but not you." He looks at both of us. "Are you two married, or betrothed?"

I look at Rivkah. She looks back at me. I look at Attribius. "It's complicated. We aren't legally married. We eloped, with her parents permission."

He runs a hand across his chin. "Good. That means Rivkah at least can get off-world, if you were legally married he could ban both of you."

"We were going to have a matrilineal marriage. She is royalty."

"MSI doesn't recognise those."

"Life2.0 does."

He hmms. Then turns to Rivkah. "What exactly did your parents say?"

Rivkah looks at me. "They didn't really say as such. Mum was attending to Appia, but she smiled to me, and tapped her wedding ring."

Attribius looks blankly at her. "Is that... Good? Bad?"

"Good, it means she sees us as married. We just ran out of time to actually cut our hands in the Unity fashion."

"Where exactly does that leave you under Life2.0's laws?"

"Married, with an incomplete ceremony."

He looks at us. "Have you consumated your marriage yet?"

Rivkah laughs. "No."

"Go upstairs, and come back when you have. We need proof of relationship sufficient to say Scipio is under your family, otherwise we'll have to smuggle Scipio off-world."

She looks at me. "What, you want us to do... That, right now?"

He frowns. "Look Rivkah, there are requirements for proof of relationship, and I'm clutching at straws trying to find a way to help. You guys literally only met yesterday, you've got no certificate, nothing verifiable unless they recognise you, which would actually cause more problems... If you go upstairs, you can at least offer a blood-stained sheet proving he took your virginity."

She shrugs. "It's better than nothing."

"Exactly. If they recognise you Rivkah, they will realise who Scipio is and detain him, unless we can prove you are spouses."

She looks at me. "What do you think?"

Should I confess that I'm imagining her wearing a lot less? "I was thinking we'd... Get to that later."

She leans in, and nods. "I know. I was too. But... He is right. We've got nothing unless we wait for Mum and Dad to settle things over with Appia and then figure something out."

Attribius frowns. "Which given Appia is in critical care, could be dicey. Poor woman had stomach acid pour out over her internal organs."

Rivkah leans back on her chair. "What if I call my fleet and ask for a shuttlecraft?"

Attribius shakes his head. "The Transit Authority takes a very dim view of people infringing their monopoly. If Appia was out of hospital, you could make it work, but without her level of authority the TA will shoot down shuttlecraft."

"Hitch-hiking then?"

"That would have even worse consequences if caught. No, we'll have to do it legally, which means hiding from Julius. What exactly do you require to formalise your marriage under Life2.0 law?"

"A witness to say the blessings and exhortations, and a blade to cut our hands together on."

"Any restrictions on the witness? You guys don't have some sort of rule saying Olinbari can't be witnesses or something?"

"Just being of good character. We've had Olinbari as participants, as witnesses, even some as magistrates."

He looks at her confused. "Who of us could be trusted by your people to be a magistrate?"

"Valerius Albanius."

His face goes white. "Appia's formerly betrothed? The man she dumped in favour of your mother?"

"Yeah, that Valerius. He officiated at my aunt and uncle's wedding."

"I thought he was assassinated by the Ligarii?"

"His family were. He wasn't on the shuttle that day."

"Oh, I see. After the auction of his family's armaments subsidiary, I figured they had all been killed."

"No, he sold up to buy a ship and some Indentured Assets outright, and travelled to us."

He takes a moment to think. "Well, let's get you guys officiated."

I draw my parazonium. Attribius gets a bowl for the blood, while Rivkah writes down a script and the vows. I slip my arm around her waist. She smiles.

Attribius returns. Rivkah slips him the words to say. "Interesting... Ok." Rivkah positions herself with her hand over the bowl. He looks at her. "Ok, Rivkah. Just for my own peace of mind, this is legally binding on your world, right?"

She nods. "Yes."

He looks at each of us. "Ok... Right, are you both sure about this? These vows are... Pretty metal, actually."

Rivkah smiles. "Yes."

I smile. "Attribius, be honest. Do you think we are crazy?"

"Absolutely off your heads, both of you. But, she's a HaMaadimi so that's nothing new, and if you two are going to make this work, you will have to be just as nuts to fit in with her family. You can't really back out now."

Rivkah laughs.

I find myself joining her.

Attribius stops us. "Ok..." He looks at the script. "Do you, Rivkah Of Unity, take Scipio Flavonius to be your husband, to have him and to hold him from this day forward; to fight by his side whether the singer celebrates your victory, or lays down a dirge to the couple who died at each other's sides; whether in sickness or in health; to love and to cherish him, until the ending of all the worlds?"

She smiles again. "Now, and forever."

She runs her hand down my parazonium, wincing. I don't feel so good.

Attribius looks at me. "And do you, Scipio Flavonius, take Rivkah Of Unity to be your wife, to have her and to hold her from this day forward; to fight by her side whether the singer celebrates your victory, or lays down a dirge to the couple who died at each other's sides; whether in sickness or in health; to love and to cherish her, until the ending of all the worlds?"

"Now, and forever."

Oooowwwwwwww.... That stings so bad!

Attribius looks at us like we are mental.

To be fair... We probably are. I guess that means I fit in.

He shakes his head. "You may now join appendages in whatever way suits you best." Rivkah presses her tongue into my mouth. Attribius looks away. "Gods, that is gross."

Rivkah wraps her arms around me, and we follow as Attribius guides us to the master bedroom. He opens the door for us. "Here you are. Please don't break the bed. I'm going to go wash my eyes out..."

We are left alone.

She looks at me, and smiles. "So, lets discuss our plans."

I stroke her hand. "Not even a just chilling together time?"

"Well... Let me get my thoughts straight. I've got a fair amount I want to say, and sex is really awkward to talk about... So, I'm a Xenaya. We naturally only mate a few weeks a year, make babies, then give birth in spring. But... I'm also the daughter of a Human-Xenayan pair, and I know Humans and Olinbari don't work that way... You guys need it much more often. And I feel like I need to talk about sex with you, with you. As far as I am concerned, you have this side of me whenever you want; I know I don't need it, but you do, and this is one adjustment I've known I need to make for a long time - Mum and Dad aren't the only Human-Xenayan pair, and other Xenayan ladies with Human husbands tell me you can make them very happy by letting them have you whenever they want, so not knowing what species my husband would be, I've been mentally preparing for doing that. And well, I've been observing Humans for years. And I've noticed that Humans, especially men, make better decisions after sex. My uncle definitely does. And well..." She stops smiling. "Right now Scipio, I need you at your best, because we are starting life together in objectively pretty difficult circumstances, and I want to keep you happy and satisfied so that it doesn't distract you from our mission."

I kiss her cheek. She is dedicated. "I will admit, I feel a lot less distracted for having made love with you."

She smiles. "Thank you, that's my goal. So, lets focus on our immediate future. What do you think of Attribius' plan?"

"He is right. Unless we can prove we are spouses, I can't get off-world. But equally, we have other issues. My father will have frozen my accounts. And the Transit Authority charges extortionate rates for surface to orbit transport."

Her brows furrow. "But with your technologies, you guys should be able to do it for practically negligible cost? The Holocron's archive puts cost to orbit for an Earth-like world on your technology level at a dollar a kilogram or so."

"Doesn't mean the monopoly in charge of pricing drops the cost to match."

She frowns. "Oh."

"If you are on MSI business, then it is free. But we aren't, so we'll end up paying tourist rates. And they charge stupid money to put off tourists and make going to Brigantia surface more prestigious."

"How bad?"

"Fifty million Corporate scrip per person. An Indentured Asset after recent reforms earns about a hundred thousand scrip per month."

"Could we borrow it?"

"Not really. Life2.0 has little to no credit and definitely no scrip, and my assets are almost certainly frozen. And my father will have people searching for us..."

"What do we do?"

"I'm not sure. If we found somewhere safe to hide, we could wait for Appia to leave critical care. Or for your family to find us."

She frowns. "We can't wait long, the fleet will depart to deal with Septima soon, and we need to be with them."

He looks at us. "Have you consumated your marriage yet?"

Rivkah laughs. "No."

"Go upstairs, and come back when you have. We need proof of relationship sufficient to say Scipio is under your family, otherwise we'll have to smuggle Scipio off-world."
I cannot avoid imagining this conversation in a lighthearted deadpan until Attribius says 'go upstairs and come back when you have.' Then the record scratches and the shadows get long. Things have gotten serious.

"Hitch-hiking then?"
Not an option! Neither of you knows where your towels are.

Oh... right. Serious. ;)

Attribius returns. Rivkah slips him the words to say. "Interesting... Ok." Rivkah positions herself with her hand over the bowl. He looks at her. "Ok, Rivkah. Just for my own peace of mind, this is legally binding on your world, right?"

I love this back-and-forth dialogue here. No notes. It's just fun to read. :)

Very much the intention. Attribius is looking at the risks like an adult, and Rivkah and Scipio are looking at the risks like the teenagers they are, and Attribius draws a extremity to get the children to focus on what they've gotten into.

Not an option! Neither of you knows where your towels are.

Definitely serious.

Fun to write too. Rivkah is obviously quoting what was in her parents' vows, and Attribius is not hiding his thoughts on them doing this very well, as he knows this was definitely not a sensible time to make the decision to run off together.

But, he's still supportive as he's a friend of Appia.

:)

Attribius is great and also so done.

Rivkah and Scipio have a matrilineal marriage? That's not going to make Julius any happier... what's their plan for dealing with him in the long term?

Hopefully Appia survives. What will Appia think of the matrilineal marriage?

He is quite a fun background character.

Ultimately he can either accept it, or, join his father.

Hopefully Appia survives. What will Appia think of the matrilineal marriage?
Her acceptance of it is one of the reasons why Scipio asked Appia instead of Julius.

Scipio watches me fiddling with a cloth to soak up the blood. I look at him. "Enjoying me?"

"So much, I feel so good. But..."

"But?"

"I'm feeling a bit worn out..." Looks at my crotch. "I'm sorry if it hurts down there."

"I feel a bit sore down there. But its ok, you had to be a bit rough because of the bleeding thing..." I shake my head.

He looks at the rolled up sheet. "Well, Attribius can't complain about us not doing that." He brings me my underwear. "How are you, my wife?"

"Tired, but happy."

He strokes my face. "I was thinking, I ought to know you better, not just sexually."

I smile. "You are the only person who'll ever know me like that."

He licks me. "Yes. But I was thinking we'd build up to having sex, not get..."

I giggle. "Led to a bedroom and told not to come down until we've made a mess on the first day?"

"Exactly!" He runs a hand through my fur. "So, I want to get to know you better."

"Anything you want to know, nothing held back."

He bends down to slip my underwear on me. "Did you ever think you'd have an Olinbari husband?"

"I figured I would marry a Xenaya. Or a Human. Olinbari didn't seem like a possibility until I found out who Mum's Dad is. It kind of shocked me, yet it didn't..."

"Marcus Aurelius being her father is a major reason why us Olinbari have some hope with Life2.0..."

I lift my arms out of his way. "You know she isn't genocidal."

"Which I'm sure can't be said for everyone in your colony."

"Mum holds them back, yes." I look at him, searching his eyes. "Scipio?"

"Yes?"

"Where do you stand on reform?"

"Well... My father recognised reform as a necessary evil. We've become dependent on the Indentured Asset system, and his concern is that Olinbari society has become close to collapse. Appia genuinely believes what she says. Arria, my mother, is afraid of losing control." He licks me. "And I think you and your mother are the best to lead us into a new era of equality. You?"

I smile, flick my eyes back to the bed. "I've found I quite like horizontal diplomacy with you."

He laughs. "Thank you Rivkah."

"Scipio?"

He brings me my dress. "Yes?"

"I love you."

He licks me. "I love you."

I lick him back. "I feel much happier for knowing there truly is a better future... All my life I've been worried that some day MSI would come and destroy my world. That is probably the biggest fear most children on Unity have, and collectively we've had the examples of Mum's generation to get past that fear and look beyond, and I'm glad we've had my Mum being the one who sets a vision of peace and cooperation, because it could have been a lot darker. And all this time, we've been worried that maybe Mum would be wrong, that reform wouldn't be possible." He takes my hand. I look deep into his eyes. "And now we get here, and I realise that there really is a better world out there. I know there will be more hardship to come as interspecies relationships aren't easy, and merging Life2.0 and MSI is probably going to be even harder..."

He licks me again, then pulls me into a close embrace. "But we are that future."

Breaking News - First Battle Of The Prikki-Arishkan War!
GCD 53893-3-27

"Greetings, this is your host Eesee with your C'ean Comms news bulletin. We begin with the news that two hundred Arishkan refuelling transports and several thousand gas collectors have been destroyed in the first major battle of the war in orbit of the gas giant Kyrena II. The deuterium and helium rich gas giant was being mined for fuel when Prikki Corvettes ambushed the operation. Eek, your analysis?"

"Yes, this battle is a critical first engagement. Following the severe Galactic Community sanctions on anyone who sells fuel to the warring parties introduced earlier this cycle, and the sustained price hikes in the antimatter and monopole markets in the wake of the outbreak of war, both the Prikki and the Arishkan have been forced into using older and less powerful propulsion systems. The result has been a war of velocity and logistics as vast fleets of corvette swarms blast across the stars while refuellers desperately try to keep up as both sides jockey for position and advance avenues over the last few months, each side trying to cut off the other's advancement routes. The Prikki have been winning this to date, as their engineering teams were better prepared for dealing with the consequences of sanctions and the effect on logistics. The war has been dragging on for quite some time, and what we've seen is that Arishkan fusion engines are not as good as Prikki ones at holding up under the extreme performance demanded by the war. This directly led to the possibility that this engagement could happen, as this particular refuelling and mobile refinery fleet parked in orbit around the gas giant while awaiting replacements for critically needed failed engine components. Their escorts were drawn away by diversion corvettes of the Prikki, while other Prikki corvettes jumped in to take advantage. While the dominantly automated fleet ensured relatively few Arishkan casualties, we understand that thousands of families have been informed of missing or killed in action relatives, with state Arishkan media blasting the Prikki's actions as callous and cruel."

Eesee continues. "The Prikki of course reply with the statement that refuelling infrastructure is a legitimate war target, and that if the Arishkan didn't want war then they shouldn't have assassinated Nooki Schneep-Rikki. We will keep you up to date with the situation as it progresses."

Hopefully Rivkah and Scipio's marriage being matrilineal means that Arria won't be an issue...

Did the Prikki actually win this first (direct) confrontation?

Hopefully Rivkah and Scipio's marriage being matrilineal means that Arria won't be an issue...
Like her husband, she doesn't get a choice in it.

Did the Prikki actually win this first (direct) confrontation?
Yes. It might only be one refuelling fleet among hundreds of thousands, or course.

The Fish Tank
"The Fish Tank"
22nd Daas, 10 (2189)
Thando HaMaadimi

A man's scream tells me I finally get to put down my book; Julius Flavonius has finally decided to wake up. Just as well, couldn't read anything in this light.

One of the fishies tries to get a nibble, and he screams again.

I yawn.

He sees me. "Get me down, right now."

I look in the tank. Take out a knife. "If you want to try sleeping with the fishes, it can be arranged."

"Who the hell are you?"

I smile. "Thando HaMaadimi."

His eyes flicker.

He tries to hide his fear.

"What the hell do you want?"

I chuckle. "Well, you have two choices Julius. Cooperate, resist pointlessly and get tortured more, or, get eaten. We want information, and we want it now, and we want it reliable. You start trying to stitch us up and the fishes get to eat you alive. Now, are you going to cooperate? Because, just for the record, right now I'm picking between whether to start pulling your teeth or applying this cable connected to a ten thousand volt transformer to somewhere with a lot of nerves."

"You monster."

"Says the slaver. You deserve everything I could do to you."

He looks at me.

Hesitates.

"Fine, I'll cooperate."

"Good. Good. Question one. I have a theory that I'm going to run by you. Appia dealt with some of the Praetorians on Brigantia. But, we both know that they weren't all here when that revolt was staged. You have links above and below the table to the Transit Authority. Which means you are going to tell me how many Praetorians are with Septima Severus."

"I don't know."

I flick my knife in the air. "How many fingers do you want to lose?"

"I said I don't know!"

I take aim. "Five seconds to change your mind."

"I don't know! I don't know!"

The knife slices straight through one of the ropes holding him above the tank. "Focus your memory then."

"I'm not working with Septima! I don't know!"

I walk around the tank and collect the knife.

Take aim again.

"Look you bastard, I don't know! I am not working with Septima!"

I laugh. "You're on four ropes left. Do you want to lose another one?"

He looks at his free arm. Then the still tied arm. Then the tied legs. His eyes go wide. "You-"

I pretend to throw.

His robe is... A bit wetter than it is supposed to be.

He closes his eyes, tries to calm his breathing. "Look, you braindead moron, I am not working with Septima. I don't know about the Praetorians. If that isn't an acceptable answer, then just get this over with."

"Fine. Question two. Who in the Transit Authority is working for her? Even the Praetorians aren't allowed to infringe on the Transit Authority's monopoly. They had help."

"What is this? You think I know? I don't even work in the Transit Authority, just have an ally who does... Is this some kind of sick game about Scipio and that girl?"

"Yep. But don't forget putting your sister in intensive care too."

The door opens. My sister looks at me. "Thando... What are you doing?"

"Having fun." She looks at me. I sigh. "I'll let him down."
