For people who've made their maps from scratch - how did you go about making the provinces? I'm bogged down drawing them one by one, each province individually, and it's hard to conform them to the topography.

Use GIMP/Photoshop and ensure that when you begin making your provinces file, you set it somewhat transparent and have the topology file underneath. Use of layers and transparency control is incredibly helpful in creation of all the map files, and ensures precise correlation among the files.

I already have the topology set up as a mask =__=
It's hardly visible, and the only way to make it actually visible is to make the provinces hardly visible.

add a layer with a high contrast topology. try the different layers controls (multiplier is nice and pretty useful for rivers layer f.e.)

How exactly do I set things up so I can test a map(just to see if it works. How it looks is irrelevant for now) without overriding the map in vanilla CK2 by copy pasta?

Aye I did. I think the basic set up is correct in a kinda sorta way, but the launcher refuses to acknowledge the folders existance. :(

EDIT: Also is it possible to resize the maps, the provinces one especially, without doing so introducing a ton pixel errors?

1) I did, but it didn't work. I'm guessing I'm probably lacking something. Probably an error on the map.

2) A shame. At least correcting stuff is only a matter of tedium rather than difficulty.

Oh yeah what's the max map size as of 1.06b? I've seen several numbers tossed around and that leaves me a bit confused.

Max map size is precisely 10Mpix, and it should, but doesn't have to be square (I mean, you could have a one pixel tall, ten million pixel wide map, but the game wouldn't like it.)

the province one is possible. use a resize option with no interpolation. others maps are more tricky or just need to remove some info (rivers can support at all resizing as they need to be 1 pix large)

Ah I meant in terms of <insert number> x <insert number>. Like the vanilla maps 2048x2048(or so I think it was...).

not that simple^^

That was meant to the guy answering me about the map size, not your reply. Yours already told me what I needed on it's own(and it worked! plus allowed me find a stray pixel I'd failed to notice).

ok. but a magical global resize ratio should be nice indeed.

Aye it would. Or a map editor that allows you to check out the map as it'd look like ingame directly without needing to boot up CK2.

Also when resizing downwards, what things would have to be removed/altered? Lakes and the like I assume? Well and borders would need adjustment of course.

sea (and by extension lakes) and landmass can be kept. rivers have to be removed.
most other map layers can support pretty resizing. only topology can be more tricky, creating more or less glitches on coastlines.

I'm currently using a topology that basically consists of just two levels, below and above sea, for testing purpouses. Didn't think it'd be much of a point in making an elaborate one until I had something that was actually usable.

fixing the coastlines is important. you can add the rest of the topology later on.

what is your map project ?
