Manichean Flavor Pack Preview #5

I'm almost done writing the drat for the dev diary, so hopefully it'll be out this weekend. Until then, let's look at the 5th and final clue.

Clue #5: Can you recover a lost ancient artifact that mentions a messianic figure? IRL, it mysteriously resurfaced and came to scholars' attention in the 1800s.

The Sealstone of Mani is an artifact that can appear in-game if you successfully revive Manicheism in Mesopotamia, the religion's heartland.

Mani's followers kept some of his relics after his death after his imprisonment by the Sassanid authorities. During a period of persecution under the Abbasid Caliphs in the 8th century, the Manicheans were forced to desecrate and destroy these relics. Mani's sealstone, however, somehow escaped this fate.

The sealstone reappeared mysteriously in France as an antique curiosity in the late 1800s, though scholars only realized its immense significance years later. Even now, according to one scholar, its significance is highly underrated, because this sealstone was likely owned and used by the founder of Manicheism, Mani, himself. On the sealstone, an inscription in Syriac says M’ny šlyḥ’ d-yyšw‘ mšyḥ’ ("Mani, Apostle of the Messiah [i.e. Jesus Christ]").

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!
Today, we have the first of two dev diaries for RICE’s next flavor pack coming with the Khans of the Steppe DLC – Manicheism: The Religion of Light. This update focuses on Manicheism, which has the dubious honor of being the only world religion that has gone extinct.

Before I start, I want to give a shout-out to two mods that already add Manichean flavor; they are, and will continue to be, compatible with RICE, so check them out if you haven’t already:
  • Eclipsed Crown: Adds a 724 start date with flavor decisions, events, struggles, and more, including Manichean and Uyghur flavor.
  • Manichean Tweaks: From the same creator of the Baptism of Rus mod, this mod improves Manicheism and the Uyghurs.
Now, let’s move onto the dev diary, which will cover general Manichean flavor!

Credits to Ethnicities and Portraits Expanded (EPE) and Community Flavor Pack (CFP) for some of the character assets featured in the screenshots.

The Yamag/Archegos

The in-game Manichean faith has, firstly, received an uplift in several ways, such as changes to the Manichean head of faith, called Yamag in CK3 but also known as the Archegos.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!

First, the Yamag’s history is now more accurate and will exist in 867 and 1066. It’ll include all historically attested holders, starting with the first leader and founder of Manicheism – Mani himself. As an aside, I’ve made Mani a member of his own house in the Arsacid Dynasty, i.e. the Parthian dynasty of Persia, which exists in 867 through the Houses of Pahlavuni (in Armenia) and Karen (around the Caspian). Manichean sources claimed both Mani’s parents were from separate branches of the Arsacids; though this is hard to verify, it’s not implausible.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!

The last indisputable Archegos was in the 8th century, but the office is attested for at least a couple centuries after that, so the Archegos in 867 is fictitious. The in-game Archegos in 1066 however is a certain Ayraman Puhr, a Manichean Church leader in the early 11th century in Uyghur-ruled Turfan who, according to Yukata Yoshida, a Japanese Iranologist, may have been one of the last Archegos of the declining Manichean community in Central Asia.

Other Religious Tweaks

Previously, RICE added a Purification doctrine for Dualist faiths; there is now a new option within that category, Liberation of Light as Purification, which is only available to Manicheans at game start. It unlocks various Manichean features I’ll discuss later below.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!

Besides the new doctrine and the changes to the Yamag, Manicheism has also received the following changes:
  • The Yamag’s capital is in Babylon in 867 and Turfan in 1066, as historically, the Archegos fled from Babylon to Samarkand in the early 900s, and then later likely moved to Turfan less than a century later.
  • Witchcraft is criminal instead of accepted. Mani preached against sorcery and those who practiced magic, associating it with the evil World of Matter and Darkness.
  • Clerical Marriage is disallowed. Sexual abstinence was a strict regulation placed on the Manichean Elect, or clergy.
  • Manicheism’s Esotericism tenet has been replaced with Monasticism. Although early Manicheism probably did not have a monastic tradition, it developed one especially in Central and East Asia, perhaps under Buddhist influence.
  • There is slightly more Manichean counties in the Uyghur regions in 1066, as the Uyghur Manichean community still attested in the 11th century.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!

867 Decisions and Flavor

By the 867 start date, Manicheism was starting to decline due to the collapse of the Uyghur Khaganate (the only major power that adopted Manicheism as a state religion) and persecutions in the Tang and Abbasid Empires.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!

If you play in 867, you’ll have a chance to play a role in furthering the decline of Manicheism – as happened historically – or reverse it. As a non-Manichean ruler of Babylon (in the county of Kufa in-game), you can take the decision to Persecute Zindiqs in Mesopotamia for some gold, piety, and legitimacy. This will move the Yamag to Samarkand.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!

Sometime after this happens, if there is no Manichean presence in Sogdiana, an event will trigger forcing the Yamag to move to the county of Toksun, in Turfan.

Meanwhile, powerful Uyghur rulers in the Tarim Basin and Turfan can take the decision to Influence the Future of Uyghur Manicheism. The Uyghurs gradually converted from Manicheism to Buddhism in the 10th and 11th centuries; a possible, though likely not sole, reason for this was the perceived corruption, greed, and luxurious lifestyle of Manichean monks.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!

The decision offers three options on how to address people’s dissatisfaction with the Manichean clergy. You can support the Elect, declaring that the accusations are blasphemous, and that as the ruler of a powerful Uyghur rump state, you’ll advocate for them in these dark times. You can also reform the Manichean Church to crack down on such corruption. Lastly, you can abandon Manicheism for another faith, as happened historically.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!

Each option places a different county modifier in the Tarim Basin and parts of the eastern steppes (where the Uyghurs were once dominant) for 100 years, representing the reaction from local Manicheans towards your actions. You’ll also get a special doctrine with bonuses or maluses that’ll stick with Manicheism and any faiths diverged from it for the rest of the game. All of this simulates how Manicheism adapts to these new developments.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!

Abandoning Manicheism is different from the other two as it lets you convert to another faith: for 100 years, Uyghur rulers in the region can take a decision to Convert Away from Manicheism, which gives bonuses for converting away from the faith. The ruler who took the decision to abandon Manicheism even gets to do the decision for free.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!

AI rulers are likely, but not guaranteed, to take this decision; and, after the period of decline is over, it’s still possible for there to be a Manichean revival.

Saving Manicheism

If Manicheism manages to make a comeback, and a Manichean ruler manages to come to Mesopotamia (the original heartland of Manicheism) whether through conquest or conversion, you can take the decision to Revive Mani’s Teachings in Mesopotamia.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!

The decision moves the Yamagate back to Babylon if it isn’t there, and spawns a Yamag if the Yamagate currently has no holder. As a “hidden” bonus, the decision also enables an event later on where a Manichean ruler in Mesopotamia recovers the Sealstone of Mani artifact.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!

We have some records of relics of Mani preserved by the Manicheans for centuries in Mesopotamia. Some of them were burnt by the Abbasids during periods of persecution. The sealstone of Mani, however, might be the only relic of Mani that has survived. It resurfaced mysteriously in the late 19th century, and has been identified by scholars as possibly owned by Mani himself – a rare and amazing piece of history, undoubtedly.

Confessions

Several decisions and activities have been added to make the experience of playing a Manichean more flavorful. Note that technically most of these features are tied to the Liberation of Light doctrine mentioned earlier, not Manicheism per se, so it's possible to create a new Dualist faith with access to these if you'd like.

Every year, you can take a decision to Perform Weekly Confession of Sins. It lets you lose a bit of stress and gain piety. You also have a very, very small chance of having a sinful or bad trait replaced with a virtuous or good one. This decision represents a requirement for Manichean laypeople to perform a ceremony to confess their sins every Monday.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!

Bema Festival

The biggest confession ceremony, and the most important event of the Manichean calendar, is the Bema Festival, represented in-game as an activity. This event commemorated the execution of Mani by the Sassanids; after a period of fasting, Manicheans would then partake in a grand confession ceremony, where Mani was believed to come down to absolve worshippers of their sins for that year.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!

The Bema Festival has two activity options. One concerns how much Fruit Alms you will give the Manichean Elect, or clergy, as part of the ceremony. Manicheans believed that plants had the highest concentration of Light or Soul, and consuming them, especially by the Elect, who were supposed to be pure and virtuous, would free the light from the evil world of matter, especially during a holy ceremony like this.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!

The other activity option is Length of Fast. Although laypeople had to fast before the Bema Festival, the actual length of this fast seems to be inconsistent, ranging anywhere from a day to a month. Perhaps this reflects variation depending on region and time period. The longer you fast, the more piety you get, but you’ll also get more stress and a higher risk for a health malus.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!

Additionally, like the simpler Confession decision, there is a chance that you’ll lose a negative or sinful trait and have it replaced with its positive counterpart during the Activity. You can increase this through different ways, such as having the Confession Intent. The other two intents, Purification and Spiritual Guidance, also have various other effects.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!

Manichean Manuscripts

Lastly, there is a decision to Commission a Manichean Manuscript. This decision lets you choose between several kinds of manuscript artifacts, including:

  • Seven Treatises: canonical scriptures of Manicheism
  • Shabuhragan: a summary of Manichean teachings written by Mani to the Persian Emperor Shapur I
  • Arzhang: the Book of Pictures, drawn by Mani himself to illustrate his teachings to the illiterate
  • Kephalaia: religious literature not in the main Manichean canon, many focused on Mani’s life, akin to Islamic hadith
  • Hymn Books
  • Confessional Texts
  • Parables and Tales
  • Other Religions’ Texts: Mani said one of his followers' duties was to collect the revealed texts of other faiths to adapt and add them to the great wisdom of Mani.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!

You can even opt to write the book yourself, if you have a high level of learning, as doing so was considered especially pious even for laypeople.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #50 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 1): Decide the Fate of the Religion of Light!

The Manicheans had a special reverence for books. Mani, the Prophet of Manicheism, argued that a flaw in older religions was that people wrote down their doctrines after their founders died, so their teachings became corrupted. He actively encouraged his disciples to write down his words while he was alive and to disseminate his teachings through books and pictures (for those who couldn't read), to ensure his teachings would remain pure. By the medieval period, even the Manicheans’ religious enemies praised the beauty of their books.

Conclusion

Thanks for reading if you've made it this far!

Manicheism is unfairly maligned in historical sources, and even in modern pop history, as nothing more than a plagiaristic heresy of Christianity, Zoroastrianism, or Buddhism. Yet it was a religion with its unique blend of ideas; at one point it was found from France to China, only to suffer a decline from which it never recovered during the CK3 period. It is my hope that this update will shine some light on this fascinating religion.

In the next dev diary which will hopefully be out in a week or so, I’ll cover new historical and bookmarked characters, new content for the Tarim Basin in general, flavor for Chinese Manicheism (which survived long after Manicheism died out elsewhere and developed special characteristics), other QOL and important changes for RICE, and much more.

For those interested, I’ll also provide my usual list of sources in my next dev diary.

Manichean Flavor Pack Preview #6

Now that we're done with going over the previous clues, let's move onto other teasers!

As some of you might know, I divided the Tarim Basin flavor pack that I did for RICE a few years ago into three main "legs" or focuses: Chinese Dunhuang, Khotan, and the Tocharians. There was actually supposed to be four legs, with the Uyghurs as the fourth. I scrapped plans for them due to time constraints.

While the Uyghurs are not the main focus of the Manichean flavor pack per se, they'll get a bit of content because of the Uyghurs' role in Manichean history. For instance, a new bookmarked character in 867 is Bokut, ruler of the strongest Uyghur rump state in the aftermath of the Uyghur Khanagate's collapse. He has a RICE-style aspiration to Revive Uyghur Power in Qocho, and laying the groundwork for a new future for the Uyghur people.

CK3 Manicheism is a big step up from CK2, if only because it's no longer a heresy of Zoroastrianism which causes the game to flip-flop between making Zoroastrianism a heresy of Manicheism and Manicheism a heresy of Zoroastrianism due to how CK2 religions worked. But it's still doesn't have much interesting flavor in CK3 vanilla, yeah

Ah, PTSD over the CK2 heresy system where certain religions flipped around on every Steppe succession. Which reminds me, any particular adjustments coming to the mod when the Khan DLC arrives?

There will likely be some changes, such as making the Kara-Khitan no longer Admin (in order to not mess up whatever new nomad systems are there for them). HOwever, we'll have to wait and see until the Khans of the Steppe DLC actually comes out to be sure what kind of changes I might have to do, as right now it's all speculation until the DLC drops.

Manichean Flavor Pack Preview #7

Besides the Uyghurs, when I was working on the Tarim Basin flavor pack, I had briefly considered adding Khitan content as a fourth or even fifth "leg" before I scaled back my ambitions.

Again, while Manicheism is still the focus of this update, I added a bit of Silk Road stuff I didn't get to previously, such as for the Khitans, especially with the Khans of the Steppe DLC in mind. One thing I'm doing is splitting RICE's 867 and 1066 eastern bookmarks into two, similarly to what I have for 1178 already, in preparation for All Under Heaven later this year. For example, a new bookmarked eastern character in 1066 is Yelü Yixin (耶律乙辛), a corrupt official of the Khitan Liao Empire under Emperor Daozong; he may get his own aspiration if I have time. The eastern bookmarks will be kind of bare, but I hope to fill them with more characters after AUH is out.

Historically, Yelü Yixin came into conflict with the Empress, Xiao Guanyin, so he turned the Emperor against her and the Crown Prince Jun, resulting in their deaths. Daozong eventually caught onto Yixin's corruption and scheming, so Yixin attempted to defect to the Song Dynasty, but failed and was killed. As Yixin, can you get away with violating the law as criminal scum, or will you have to serve your sentence or even pay with your blood?

Manichean Flavor Pack Preview #8

Before I show the preview, I want to copy here a message I put up on my discord earlier this week, in case you didn't see it, concerning the near future plans for RICE in light of recent circumstances:

As some of you may know, today, Bethesda Game Studios not only announced the Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remaster, but released it the same day as well.

To this day, Oblivion remains my favorite game ever. In fact, I owe it for rekindling my interest in games, and leading me towards Crusader Kings 2 and, ultimately, Crusader Kings modding.

Thus, I want to be honest and let you know that Oblivion might delay any Crusader Kings modding I'm working on – slightly. Hopefully not too much. While I'll still plan to dedicate some of my free time in the near future to wrapping up my planned updates for VIET/RICE for Khans of the Steppe, expect possible delay. I would not be putting out this message for any other game, seriously.

Today's preview is of a mini-collab I'm doing with Rajas of Asia, a mod that I've worked with in the past that adds in the rest of Asia along with plenty of well-researched flavor across all of Asia.

Although I can’t add a new faith to existing vanilla religions as I’d have to modify vanilla code, which I won’t do to ensure maximum compatibility. Rajas of Asia has no such limitations, however, so they'll be adding a Mingjiao faith soon to represent Chinese Manicheism, as part of a little collab with RICE for this update. Thus, if you’re playing RICE with ROA, Manichean flavor will also be available to Mingjiao.

Chinese Manicheism developed noticeable differences from “orthodox” Manicheism as a result of blending with other faiths in China, like Buddhism, Taoism, and Chinese folk religion. As discussed in previous previews, although other forms of Manicheism went extinct elsewhere during the medieval period, Chinese Manicheism survived in the Fujian region, in southeast China, as late as the 1600s. Even today, folk Chinese religion in parts of Fujian, though not Manichean per se, has assimilated some Manichean practices and prayers into their religious practice.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #53 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 2): Chinese Flavor, Historical Characters, and More!

Today, I have for you the second dev diary for RICE’s next flavor pack coming with the Khans of the Steppe DLC – Manicheism: The Religion of Light. In thefirst dev diary, we touched on general additions and improvements to the Manichean religion; today, we’ll touch on Chinese Manichean flavor, historical characters, and other general additions coming with this update. Please be aware that all this is subject to change especially depending on what we get with Khans of the Steppe.

Like last time, before we start, I want to give a shout-out to two mods that already add Manichean flavor; they are, and will continue to be, compatible with RICE, so check them out if you haven’t already:
  • Eclipsed Crown: Adds a 724 start date with flavor decisions, events, struggles, and more, including Manichean and Uyghur flavor.
  • Manichean Tweaks: From the same creator of the Baptism of Rus mod, this mod improves Manicheism and the Uyghurs.
Credits to Ethnicities and Portraits Expanded (EPE) and Community Flavor Pack (CFP) for some of the character assets, and for Rajas of Asia (ROA) for the expanded Asia map, featured in the screenshots.

Chinese Manicheism

After declining elsewhere as well as several persecutions in China, Chinese Manicheism developed noticeable differences from “orthodox” Manicheism, blending with other faiths in China, like Buddhism, Taoism, and Chinese folk religion. Unfortunately, I can’t add a new faith to existing vanilla religions as I’d have to modify vanilla code, which I don’t do to ensure maximum compatibility. However, the Rajas of Asia mod, an Asia map and flavor mod that I’ve worked with extensively in the past, will soon add a Mingjiao faith in to represent Chinese Manicheism, as part of a little collab with RICE for this update. Thus, if you’re playing RICE with ROA, Manichean flavor will also be available to Mingjiao.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #53 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 2): Chinese Flavor, Historical Characters, and More!

While official Chinese sources of the medieval period stereotyped many heterodox rebel groups as “vegetarian demon worshipping” Manicheans, there is a grain of truth in that Chinese Manicheism took on a more martial character compared to other Manichean communities, probably to protect themselves from repeated suppression by the government. For instance, many, like Lin Deng himself, were said to be good at martial arts, and Chinese Manichean communities were likely involved in a number of peasant uprisings. In fact, Chinese Manicheism was a big inspiration for the Ming Cult, a fictional martial arts school in wuxia (martial arts historical fantasy) novels written by one of the genre’s greatest writers, Jin Yong.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #53 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 2): Chinese Flavor, Historical Characters, and More!

Landless adventurers and rulers of count tier who are of Chinese heritage, and follow a faith with the Liberation of Light doctrine, thus have access to a decision to Recruit Mingjiao Cultists. It gives you a small army of levies based on your diplomacy and learning, and a few men-at-arms; those with the Mystic, Herbalist, Physician, Scholar, Peasant Leader, and Heresiarch traits will gain extra 100 men-at-arms troops each. The cost of this decision is influenced by your martial and intrigue, while the cooldown time by your stewardship.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #53 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 2): Chinese Flavor, Historical Characters, and More!

Lin Deng

Historically, Manicheism’s survival in the Fujian region of SE China owes much to a certain Lin Deng (林瞪), a Manichean leader active in Fujian until his death in 1059. Lin Deng's magical powers were legendary, and he is worshipped by locals to this day. In one legend, after he died, when a fire started in a city, people saw a man wearing white robes in the sky using an iron fan to extinguish the fire; he then told the locals below that he was none other than Lin Deng.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #53 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 2): Chinese Flavor, Historical Characters, and More!

If you started in the 1066 and 1178 start dates, and are of Chinese heritage and your faith has the Liberation of Light as Purification doctrine (i.e. Manicheism or Mingjiao if you have ROA), you’ll have access to a decision to Worship Lin Deng, representing Lin Deng’s status as a folk hero. You can ask him to aid you in different ways, potentially granting you useful modifiers.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #53 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 2): Chinese Flavor, Historical Characters, and More!

An important disciple of Lin Deng was Chen Pingshan (陈平山). Though lesser-known, he and Lin Deng’s other disciples must’ve done a good job continuing his efforts to propagate Manicheism, as the religion survived in China into the 1600s. Chen Pingshan is thus a new adventurer character in the 1066 start date; in normal RICE, he starts in Gansu, but when All Under Heaven comes out, he’ll be moved to the better location of Fujian. Alternatively, if you play a mod like Rajas of Asia or Oriental Empires, he’ll already start in Fujian.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #53 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 2): Chinese Flavor, Historical Characters, and More!

Interestingly, in the present day, Chen Pingshan’s descendant, Chen Peishang, is a local priest and ritualist in Fujian, who is in possession of manuscripts with clear Manichean origins that have been crucial for scholars of Manicheism.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #53 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 2): Chinese Flavor, Historical Characters, and More!

Chen Pingshan also has a unique trait, Disciple of Lin Deng. It provides bonuses related to the decision to Worship Lin Deng, and is inherited by your children (and their children, etc.) as well once they become adults. You gain experience in this trait by doing various Manichean decisions and activities, particularly the Lin Deng decision mentioned above.

Bookmarked Characters

867 and 1066 eastern bookmarks have been split like what 1178 already has; currently, the eastern bookmarks don’t have a lot of characters, but I’m saving that space for the future for when All Under Heaven comes out.

Three new eastern bookmarked characters have been added, each with their own aspiration, which, if you don’t know, are small, optional “quests” some historical characters start with in RICE to encourage you to roleplay them in a historical manner.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #53 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 2): Chinese Flavor, Historical Characters, and More!

The aforementioned Chen Pingshan’s aspiration is to Continue Lin Deng’s Legacy, which has several objectives, the most important of which are to max out your trait experience in the Disciple of Lin Deng trait, and to have at least one adult child who’s inherited that trait too.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #53 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 2): Chinese Flavor, Historical Characters, and More!

For landed characters, a bookmarked character in 867 is Bokut, the king of Qocho, the most powerful rump state of the Uyghur Khaganate, which had only just collapsed a couple decades beforehand. Qocho would go on to exercise a great degree of political, cultural, religious, and economic influence over Central Asia, and your goal is to lay the foundations of that, through your aspiration to Revive Uyghur Power in Qocho.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #53 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 2): Chinese Flavor, Historical Characters, and More!

Lastly, for landed characters in 1066, the new bookmarked ruler is Yelu Yixin, a corrupt and powerful official of the Khitan Liao Dynasty. Historically, he came into conflict with the virtuous Empress consort Xiao Guanyin, so, long story short, he turned the Emperor Daozong against her and she was executed. Daozong eventually wised up to Yixin’s misdeeds, and Yixin was killed while attempting to defect to the Song Dynasty in 1083.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #53 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 2): Chinese Flavor, Historical Characters, and More!

Yixin’s aspiration is to Amass Power and Wealth as a Liao Official. It requires you to get a lot of gold, retain the confidence of the Emperor, and murder Guanyin and all her children. Take destiny into your own hands to become the corrupt, powerful official you’re meant to become!

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #53 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 2): Chinese Flavor, Historical Characters, and More!

Additionally, unless this is rectified in the upcoming Khans of the Steppe DLC, I’ve also added Empress Guanyin as Daozong’s wife, as she currently does not exist in vanilla. As Yelu Yixin, you start off having a rivalry with her, and a friendship with Daozong, to represent his trust in you – but be careful, lest he loses that trust in you!

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #53 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 2): Chinese Flavor, Historical Characters, and More!

More Adventurers!

Many other historical characters, especially Manicheans and Uyghurs, have been added besides the ones previously discussed. Some are playable landless adventurers, including:

  • Mardan-Farrukh (867): A Zoroastrian philosopher and apologist; his writings indicate he either was formerly Manichean, or had familiarity with it, due to his relative accuracy in describing Manicheism compared to other anti-Manichean polemicists.
  • Ibn Wahab (867): A purported descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, who adventured to China and supposedly even had an audience with the Chinese Emperor.
  • Shingqo Sheli Tutung (1066): A Buddhist Uyghur scholar, poet, and translator who was fluent in several languages, including Chinese.
  • Zhao Weiyi (1066): A Chinese court musician of the Khitan Liao Dynasty; his close friendship with Empress Xiao Guanyin would cost him his life due to the scheming of the aforementioned Khitan official Yelu Yixin.
  • Tatatunga (1178): An Uyghur scribe who was serving the Naiman tribe when Genghis Khan defeated them. His loyalty to the Naiman impressed the Khan, who recruited him; he would later develop the Mongolian script that is still used today in limited contexts.
r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #53 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 2): Chinese Flavor, Historical Characters, and More!

Cultural Traditions

Speaking of Uyghurs, the Uyghur culture will get a new tradition: Scribes of the Steppe. Having learned from Sogdian merchants, clergy, and adventurers across the Silk Road, the Uyghurs became quite proficient and famous themselves for their skill in the literary arts, and in fact formed the bureaucratic backbone of the early Mongol Empire.

r/CrusaderKings - RICE Mod Dev Diary #53 || Manichean Flavor Pack (Part 2): Chinese Flavor, Historical Characters, and More!

Another new tradition is for the Syriac culture, Royal Physicians, reflecting the longtime association of the Arameans or Assyrians with medicine. I figured it was appropriate enough for this update, as Aramaic played an important role in early Manicheism.

Local Pilgrimages

The old Tarim Basin Flavor Pack, one of RICE’s biggest updates ever despite not having a struggle, will get even bigger, withf two new local pilgrimages to the Mogao Caves and Bezeklik Caves. These are available to Buddhists and any Dualist faith with the Liberation of Light as Purification doctrine (like Manicheism).

Although these caves are mainly associated with Buddhism, we have graffiti indicating the presence of people of other faiths. Most were likely non-religious travelers or tourists, but there is evidence Manicheans used the caves for religious purposes too, particularly Bezeklik, which was close to the Uyghur center of Manicheism.

One special thing about the Mogao Cave pilgrimage is that if you took the decision to Patronize a Mogao Cave, previously added in RICE a while back for Buddhist rulers in the Tarim Basin and the Dunhuang area, you’ll get additional legitimacy depending on how big your cave was, giving you another incentive to take that decision.

All of RICE’s local pilgrimages – including the new Mogao and Bezeklik pilgrimages – will also have a new activity option: Memorialization. This represents your character commemorating the occasion, from leaving graffiti or building a monument back home (pilgrims’ graffiti at holy sites has been an invaluable resource for historians, for instance). This option can increase your prestige and even renown at higher levels.

That’s not all for RICE’s local pilgrimages – previously, when you started a local pilgrimage, you’d pick whether it’s an Act of Devotion, Religious Observance, or Spiritual Vacation, with different effects. There’s now a new fourth option: Pious Performance, where you’re doing this to publicly demonstrate your piety. When this option is taken, you’ll gain legitimacy at the end of the local pilgrimage, depending on what you select for the Memorialization activity option.

Conclusion

That concludes this dev diary! I hope you enjoyed our exploration of the fascinating Manichean faith, which, as I mentioned in the previous dev diary, has the dubious honor of being the only world religion to have gone extinct. Perhaps, however, you’ll be able to reverse its slow decline in the medieval period, and spread the teachings of Mani across the world once more!

As for this update’s ETA, it’ll be some time after Khans of the Steppe DLC comes out. Though I’ve completed a good chunk of the needed work, I want to be honest and open and say I can’t promise when it’ll be out – as some of you may know, Bethesda Game Studios announced and released the Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remaster out of nowhere earlier this week. I can’t articulate how much I treasure my favorite game ever, and it’s probably the only game I would have to mention this for; in fact I owe it to Oblivion for rekindling my interest in games, and leading me towards Crusader Kings 2 and, ultimately, Crusader Kings modding. I’ll be (re-)enjoying a lot of Oblivion in the coming weeks, but will still do my best to dedicate a bit of time to updating my mods to Khans of the Steppe, and releasing the Manichean Flavor Pack. Just expect potential delays – hopefully, however, not too much. (Todd Howard, you've done it again!)

Thanks for your patience and understanding!

In all this research about sassanid religion in china, I don't supposed you came across any good candidates for a Li surnamed claimant to the Sassanid throne for any of the start dates?

Apparently this thread talks about a potential descendant in China who would be alive c. 867, but they don't provide a link to their original source and I haven't had time to look into it further.

The last one that is confirmed to exist (and attempt to retake the empire) is Khosrow son of Bahram (VII) who participated in a siege against the Umayyads in 729. I did some research on this a while ago but wasn't able to find any more recent descendants. The common understanding seems to be that they faded into Chinese nobility and assimilated.
Could definitely be a fun easter egg character but would have to be a mystery descendant

@cybrxkhan any chance you could tackle the optional nomad areas to give it far more local flavour? Seeing OPB playing the Sami as Nomads was cool and sad at the same time. I quite like playing the Sami when I feel like reforming a pagan faith (same with playing in southwest Africa) and would love more local flavour.

At some point, yes, I would like to add in a bit more flavor to the non-steppe nomad regions to go along with their nomad stuff.

Manichean Flavor Pack Preview #9

I realize I had this preview picture lying around for a couple weeks now but had forgotten to post the preview because I was too distracted with new Oblivion.

We're still on track for an update in 1-2 weeks. I'm considering possibly putting out a rough beta this weekend if I have some time to finish tweaking some things. It's not meant to be long-term playable, but just to throw a bone to those of you who have been waiting for an update, and are more experienced mod users who know the risks of running less rigorously tested mods.

Anyhow, here's a preview of one possible result from the decision to Commission a Manichean Manuscript. Each type of manuscript provides a different, unique bonus to a Manichean decision and/or activity if it is equipped as a journal/book artifact.

TEASER 1 FOR REDACTED

I believe I am close to finishing RICE's update to 1.16, and I hope to have it out by early next week. In the meanwhile, work has started on RICE's next flagship flavor pack, which will include RICE's first attempt at Situations! This flavor pack, and its focus, will be revealed at ModCon next month.

(For those waiting for the Mayo Flavor Pack, unfortunately due to how this year's schedule is working out, I'll have to postpone that again. My goal is to do Mayo between [Redacted] and All Under Heaven.)

Clue #1: Rule a fertile land once split between three groups.
