[MOD] Rex In Regno Suo Est Imperator (English Version !)

8fwo.png

Rex in regno suo est imperator (RIRSEI) is a mod based on a deep overhaul of imperial mechanics in the christian world (catholic and orthodox). The aim of the mod is to increase greatly the historicity of the vanilla game, while deepening the uchronic options but whose intentions and ideas are rooted in historical reality. It's recommended for historical accuracy fans, especially in late game. On the other hand, several kingdoms now have unique and dynamic scripts around the imperial dynamics. This mod has been worked for both the date of 867 and 1066. So I hope you'll enjoy this mod.

THIS MOD IS COMPATIBLE WITH EUIV CONVERTER

General changes

867 : Feudal mutation

The late ninth century was marked by what Georges Duby called "feudal revolution". The royal and imperial authority collapsed, the counts and dukes imposed heredity of their function, and emissaries no longer have any control over them. As to time, even the great vassals will lose power on lords and barons. A new society appears, not based on the authority of the state, but on loyalty between men. To simulate this change in society, it will be impossible to go beyond the average authority, and factions around elective succession and a lower authority will be encouraged. This mutation ends around 1020, when symbolizing the peace of God, the cessation of violence and the breakdown of authority.

De jure kingdoms & empires :

MsjvSMV.jpg

1066 : Build a state

(If you start in 867, a message will inform you when the feudal mutation ends and when it's time for you to build a State)
Long ago that the imperial or royal public authority, account for little compared to feudal relations that bind lords and vassals. The authority was so decomposed that the potestas, the right to justice, is now in the hands of lesser lord. But the feudal violences stopped a few decades ago thanks to the peace of God and the Christian world is finally beginning to stabilize. If you are an overlord or if you manage to be, you'll have to overcome the power of the great vassals to restore public power around your crown ! In this mod, taxes and the levies are based on the development of the crown authority, as the casus belli de jure (except for de jure ducal claims). But do not forget that the great vassals fiercely oppose any development of a royal or imperial authority.

De jure kingdoms & empires :

9qmOc6V.jpg

0DLR5Aj.jpg

- De jure empires of the catholic and orthodox worlds have been removed, except the Imperium Romanum and Basileia tôn Rhômaiôn
- The history of both Roman empires (Imperium Romanum and Basileia tôn Rhômaiôn) were reworked.
- De jure empires and kingdoms borders overhaul for more historical accuracy (1066 and 867)
- Complete overhaul of the laws and crown authority systems. It's more difficult to increase the crown authority in the lower levels, the crown authority level influences the tax and levies, moderate crown authority is necessary to press de jure royal/imperial claims, etc.
- Legalism now increases the size of your demesne if you are king or emperor. This will allow you to rule directly a good part of your kingdom at the end of the game, as it was the case historically
- You can start a game at any date between 867 and 1066 (despite some remaining work...)
- Some minor esthetics modifications...

IMPERIUM ROMANUM (HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE)

HRE is, at the beginning of the game, Imperium Romanum, Roman Empire, taking its Sacrum particle two centuries later.
It's the only empire in the western christian world, because catholics don't recognize the Basileia tôn Rhômaiôn Emperor ("Emperor of the Romans", namely Byzantine Empire) and prefer call him Imperator Graecorum ("Emperor of the Greeks"), except Venice which considers itself as a part of the Eastern Empire lands to preserve the claws of the Imperium Romanum. However, the Western Roman Empire, resurrected by Otton and Charlemagne, has some characteristics poorly made in the vanilla game. The mod has the aim to improve that.

- First of all, titulature of the Empire was extended to all the monarchs with the Roman Emperor title since Charlemagne.

For 867 :

- As it was the case historically, if the Empire is too weak and is not ruled by a Karling, the pope can refuse to crown the Emperor, destroying the Empire and leaving the title vacant.

- "Form Empire" décision overhaul. Now, you'll have to own many territories, have a Pope agreement, and have at least two important titles in the carolingian space.

For the both dates :

- Van Diemen mod (http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/...RE-Revised-Mod) was partially integrated and improved.
Now, an elected emperor is not an emperor, but only Rex Romanorum - the King of the Romans. As it's not crowned, he can't change any law in the Empire. More, he must keep good relations with the Pope to expect to be crowned, because he can refuse. But once you are crowned, you will gain some interesting bonuses to rule your empire. However, it's now more difficult to increase the crown authority or change succession laws without an important civil war. If the Emperor is a Karling, it will be easier to be crowned.

- The best emperors and the more pious can declare that they must guide the Christianity. Universal ambitions and higher temporal ruler of the Emperor, which is a major characteristic, embodied in this decision, what you will attract the wrath of the other independent Catholic monarchs and the Papacy.

Only for 1066 :

- If the Kingdom of France is weak, and if the Emperor has a high power, he can claim tutelage of this kingdom, as did the first Ottonians during the 10th century. Maybe the dream to unify all of the Charlemagne's empire will be yours ?

For the both dates :

- Recovery of the kingdom of France, an extended imperial demesne and a strong authority will allow you to declare Renovatio Imperii, transforming the lands of the old Western Roman Empire as de jure lands. This decision is inspired from the will and the propaganda of the greatest emperors, as Frederic II. It's easier to declare the Renovatio Imperii as a carolingian emperor.

- It's possible to restore the vanilla Roman Empire with the HRE, if you succeed to get all the lands of the Western Roman Empire.

- The Roman Empire/Imperium Romanorum can be formed if you gather the imperial Western and Eastern crowns.

- If the Byzantine Empire is near the ruin, the Holy Roman emperor can unify the Roman Empire under his power. Historically, these proposals were recurrent but refused from the 14th century. In the mod, Basileus can accept in a rare case.

- As Alphonse X from Castille during the Great Interregnum, catholic monarchs can claim the imperial crown if the Empire is weak and if the Pope has a good opinion of them. They declare war to the Roman Emperor to remove him.

DUCATUS POLONIAE (POLAND)

Poland is now a kingdom, as in vanilla game, but its title is a duke title. Historically, emperors, after some wars, forced the Poland kings to abandon their king title for a duke title, to symbolize a kind of vassalization. If Poland becomes strong, its ruler can demand a royal crown to the Pope and avoid the imperial danger, as historically. If the Empire becomes strong, it can claim the complete vassalization of the duke of Poland.

REGNUM FRANCIAE (FRANCE)

For 867 only :

- The Kingdom of France can conditional absorb the kingdom of Aquitain after 900. Historically, kings of France realize that it was unhelpful to nominate their heir as king of Aquitain, because the people of Aquitaine considered to be part of the kingdom of France.

For 1066 :

- Kingdoms of Britain and Aquitaine can conditional be formed.

For the both dates :

- Kings of France older than 14 may be crowned, if Reims is owned by their kingdom. This gives to the king a kind of semi-clerk status and it legitimates him for people, nobility and clergy. The kindgom of France is more stable and easier to rule, but the regency periods can be harder.

- culture names were replaced by historical names (oïl, oc). Gallo culture was added for two provinces in Britain.

- Counties that had a duke title in vanilla game (like Tolosa or Flanders), stays duchies but with count titles.

- A very strong king of France who succeed to highly extend his demesme can declare he's "emperor in his kingdom". He get a prestige bonus, a better hold on his vassals, a better administration and can avoid a claim from the Empire.

- If the king of France is emperor in his kingdom, he can claim some regions whose de jure vassality is blurred between France and HRE. These regions can become de jure provinces of the kingdom of France if the Empire is weak or compliant.

REGNUM FRANCIAE-REGNUM ARAGONIAE (FRANCE-ARAGON)

County of Barcelona belongs de jure to the kingdom of France, in 1066. Even if the Count Borell declared himself independant from his liege, Hugues Capet, latter has no brought the promised aid against the Muslims. These lands belongs de jure to the Kingdom of France to Corbeil treaty under the reign of Louis IX. Catalan monasteries chronics, for example, continues to date by years of reign of the king of France. This is useful because this allowed to the Count of Barcelona to protect himself against the claims of the other kings in the peninsula, saying "but i've already a king" ! Of course, when the count of Barcelona seized the crown of Aragon, his intention changed. In this mod, if the king of Aragon directs the Principate, he can link it de jure to his kingdom. But be careful, because the king of France can enforce his rights on his historic counties (county of Roussillon), which belongs to Septimania/Marquis of Gothie.

REGNUM TEUTONICORUM (KINGDOM OF GERMANY)

- As the kingdom of Aquitaine with France, the king of Germany can de jure annex the kingdom of Bavaria.

CAROLINGIAN SPACE

- If a carolingian duke or count is a vassal in a kingdom in the carolingian space (France, Aquitaine, Lorraine, Germany, Italy, Burgundy, Bavaria), but that this kingdom is not owned by a carolingian, this duke or count will get a strong claim on this kingdom. If the Empire is not rules by a Karling, a carolingian duke or count can claim it.

- Getting imperial insigna of Charlemagne gives a bonus. These imperial insigna are in Aix la Chapelle in 867, and in Paris from 978. The king of France can attack the owner of Aix la Chapelle with a specific Casus Belli, to get these relics. However, the old owners can attack you to take it back ! Historically, the possession of the imperial insigna was hotly contested. Lothar raided Paris in 978 to seize it. Ironically, it allowed the Capetians to end the will of the Empire to put the France under its guardianship.

REGNI NORMANORUM (SCANDINAVIAN KINGDOMS)

The king which succeeded to gather the crowns of Norway, Sweden and Denmark can get the crown of Rex Normanorum, the King of Normans.

REGNI HISPANIARUM (KINGDOMS OF SPAIN)

For 867 :

- Region of Duero is depopulated. If it forms a wonderful defensive glacis against the Muslims, you have to overcome this economic vacuum if you go in the Reconquista.

For the both dates :

- the kings who owns Saint Jacques de Compostelle will receive a bonus

- The prestigious and pious kings who conquered some muslim territories can be named "Defensor Fidei" by the Pope. They get important bonuses : good relations with holy orders and other iberian kings, to complete the Reconquista.

- The character who succeeded to gather all of the spanish crowns can unite the various kingdoms weapons in one.

REGNUM HUNGARIAE
For 867 :

- Now, it is not enough to occupy the lower Danube to form the Kingdom of Hungary. As historically, you must become catholic and claim a crown to the Pope, or become orthodoc and claim a crown to the Roman Basileus.

- Be careful, if you are christian and the Imperium Romanum is strong, it can claim your vassalization if you have not a royal title. Getting this royal title delete this threat.

REGNI BOHEMIAE POLONIAEQUE (BOHEMIA AND POLAND)

For 867 :

- If Great Moravia does not exist anymore, Duke of Bohemia can claim a crown to the Pope if he's catholic. Thus, he can avoid a vassalization by the Empire, if latter is strong.

- Bohemia and Poland can contest the command of the western slaves, as historically. To 1020, the duke of Poland and the duke/king of Bohemia can get claims on the demesne of the other.

For 1066 (or 867 if Bohemia is a vassal of HRE) :

- The duke of Bohemia (vassal of the HRE) can claim a crown to the Pope or the Emperor (as historically). Le first solution makes the emperor furious. You have to get good relations with him to choose the second solution.

For the king of Bohemia only :

- If Great Moravia does not exist anymore, a strong king of Bohemia can claim his inheritance to get claims from Silesia to the western part of the Hungary.

TSARATS & BASILEIA TÔN RHÔMAIÔN (BYZANTINE EMPIRE)

- The Byzantine Empire/Basileia tôn Rhômaiôn can claim (de jure) the old eastern roman territories (as Egypt) under conditions

- The Byzantine Empire/Imperium Romanorum can be formed by gathering the both western and eastern imperial crowns

- The imperial reconquest of the Roman Empire/Imperium Romanorum is extended to the Muslims

- Form the Roman Empire/Imperium Romanorum with the Byzantine Empire will destroy the Imperium Romanum (HRE).

- Russians, Serbians and Bulgarians can form empires if the Byzantine Empire is destroyed or weak

- These empires can form the Basileia tôn Rhômaiôn if they are strong and seize Constantinople (you can accomplish the dream of Siméon of Bulgaria !)

ROMAIOI PATCH :

Dunatoi&Aristoi system

Byzantine families are divided in two parts : military families (aristoi) and civilian families (dunatoi). Characters get a trait that give them a specific bonus and a specific malus, plus a relation malus with the "other side". If en emperor which depends on one of the two sides, his government mode changes et has an influence on all of the empire. The aristoi emperors can raise the Archontopouloi Guard, if they choose a pronoia system.

Autokrator

If a byzantine emperor get the absolute authority, he'll become an "autokrator" but will loose his aristocratic trait. I'll can fight against the both aristocratic families to restore the rights of the less powerful. He will be hated, but this situation will be very profitable for the empire.

From themes to pronoia

In 867, You'll begin with the "themes sytem" : if a doux dies, you get his title automatically, and you can give it if you want. However, be careful. If the Empire get a low authority, Doux will get a new objective : imposing pronoia (their title will become a feudal title). If they succeed, you will loose the possibility of getting their title à their death and revoke it without a malus. An autocrat emperor can cancel the pronoia system.

Usurpations

If the emperor is crazy, a child or a woman, prestigious Doux will get a strong claim on the byzantine throne.

Unite both Churches for the Catholics

-Latin Empire/Imperium Romaniae exists and has converted all the Romania (Greece) to catholicism. Orthodoxy becomes a heresy.
Is the Basileus is weak, he can call for help to the Pope in exchange for the union of the both Churches. But historically, byzantine clergy and byzantine people refused this union, while Basileis were favorable to it. Once taken this decision, the Basileus will become catholic and will must evangelize all the Romania. In exchange for that, he will get a military contingent in Constantinople.

The compromise of 812

When byzantines accepted to recognize Charlemagne as emperor, they concluded an agreement as "North for you, and we keep south". But Otton II tried to call this compromise into question and tried to "connect" the south of Italia in that it considered as the real Roman empire.
Now, if one of both empires is weak, if the other is strong and if the both emperors have bad relations, they'll can claim the rest of Italia to the other part.

Varangians & Rus'

Now, it's more difficult to get the Varangian Guard. First, you have to open the "Varangian way". You have to propose to the stronger Russian prince (via a decision) a porphyrogenite princess. If he accepts, he'll convert to orthodoxy and will open the Varangian way.

Regni Sicilarum

Kingdoms of Sicily, Naples and Trinacria get a permanent Casus Belli on Romania if their king is catholic, and get this same permanent Casus Belli on Byzantine Empire if the Basileus is not catholic.

General

-Possibility of de jure war to conquer entire duchies if your crown authority is at least high.
-Possibility of de jure war to conquer entire kingdoms if your crown authority is absolute.
-Kingdom of Majorca added for late bookmarks.
-Tsardoms of Serbia and Bulgaria have a permanent Casus Belli on Romania (and the "Empire Vacancy" tab was overhauled to protect the "bulgarian" empire from Simeon I)
-catholic monarchs will can convert to orthodoxy if Rome was conquered by pagans, if the catholic faith is weak and if the orthodox faith is strong.
- New bookmark : the Great Interregnum
-The Imperator Caesar Augustus have their nomina, and no english names anymore.
-Bugfixes, as usual

REGNUM BRITANNIAE (KINGDOM OF BRITAIN)

- You can become the king of bretons if a celt dynasty seize the throne of England.

IMPERIUM ROMANIAE (LATIN EMPIRE OF CONSTANTINOPLE)

- The Imperium Romaniae/Eastern Latin Empire was overhauled. Now, conditions to create it are more historical, and this empire can seize all de jure territories of the Byzantine Empire/Basileia tôn Rhômaiôn if it eliminates all the pretenders of the Eastern Empire (Byzantines and Serbians, without Russians). For the same conditions that the Byzantine Empire, it can form the Roman Empire/Imperium Romanorum.

- In keeping with the historical willingness of some Venetian patricians to transfer the seat of the Republic in Constantinople (Senate rejected this proposal), we let you the uchronic, but realistic and "historical" (the vote was proposed) choice to transfer the Venetian capital to Constantinople (if seized by Venice of course). Then, Venice can form the Imperium Romaniae under a few conditions.

Put RIRSEI.mod and the RIRSEI folder in (by default) MyDocuments/Paradox Interactive/Crusader Kings II/mod. Then select the mod "Rex in regno suo est imperator" in the launcher. Enjoy !WARNING : because of de jure mechanisms changes in the last patch, you can encounter some bugs on the de jure territories if you switch from a game started in 867 to a game started in 1066. Just restart the game BEFORE loading your game .

Wowsers! This looks very good! I will sign up to translate for you - just let me know what to do...

Hope this gets translated soon - Latin language for the de jure titles is something I've wanted for a while.

This makes me drool. Will it be compatible with Project Balance?

Thank you all for your answers ! And sorry for my bad englisheuh, i'm french, at last :D

@tsf4 : In the mod folder localisation, there is a RIRSEI file with all the texts to be translated. There really is a lot of work and I think that's a lot for one person

@Jokolytic :
I think not, unfortunately. I changed the majority of de jure realms and empires.

Also if possible you should try to get the Latin names in Vulgar Latin, rather than Classical. Just adds a nice historical touch.

Also please try a better download site like mediafire...

@FanoI :
Ah sorry, but I had warned that the mod is in French, and I looking to translators!

@Jokolytic :
In fact, I am a historian of classics studies, and I admit that my latin is moar Ciceronian than anything else. I've a friend who helped me a lot on this mod that research right on the Emperor Charles IV, it would have to ask him~~

EDIT :
It's me or the presentation page has been removed ? :c

@Farathorn: I am willing to do some. Is there a place I can commit the translated files too?

EDIT :
It's me or the presentation page has been removed ? :c

Yeah it's gone, which makes me wonder what this mod is about, from the comments it seems to be about renaming things

Yes the presentation is gone what's happened?

No, it was not only a renaming in Latin there was much more... I don't know if you could add it again, Farathorn, try to ask to a moderator

So if I play it in French it would be better? How to play it in French? I remember that on first game installation CK2 asked me and I select English obviously but never I've seen it anymore...

I add a thing IMHO "The King of The Romans" should be a title (I don't know if you could give all the benifts of the trait, if not possible then let be the title + the trait).

The opening post appears to have returned. Anyway it looks very interesting, I was wondering if perhaps I could incorporate parts of it into mine and fanoI's mod, The Commune of Rome. is that O.K with you? Also I could probably work on translating a bit of it into English.

Glad to see that the presentation is back !

@tsf4 :
You can send me the work by MP ? We must have a little organization to avoid having two people translating the same thing, I do not know how, any ideas ?

@fanoI :
If you have steam it is possible to change in Properties of the game.

@frankatank109 : Ah, I forgot to say, but my work is free ! Even without asking me, I just demand to quote me somewhere. So of course it's okay ! Only exception is the work of Van Diemen, then I think you should ask him. For the translation you must see with tsf4~~

By the way, you can use the Æ ligature instead of just AE at the end of the names of titles (Regnum Bohemiæ instead of Regnum Bohemiae).
The alt code is ALT + 145.

Well yesterday I've found how to set CK2 in French and I've done a test game as the King of West Francia declared war to my brother for the HRE title ASAP and take the crown from the Pope... finally I know what "blou" means :p

Some suggestions / doubts / discussion matters:

  1. I'm unsure if the trait "King of the Romans" should be destroyed when one is crowned Emperor by the Pope, yes you will double the prestige, but one could always have more prestige, right?
  2. I'm indeed sure that the other trait for the King of France (Sacrè Nuit? Sorry my French is horrendous... a lot worst of my Engrish) shouldn't be destroyed, one would remain King of West Francia in the end...
  3. In any case if you want to destroy them you should put something in decision's potential too as now they clutters the decision interface :p
  4. I have vassalized Britannia via war and the decision is gone away, I have, probably misunderstood it by it was not meant to integrate Britannia as a de jure vassal in West Francia / HRE? If not it could make sense or not?
  5. In the presentation page you have talked of a special HRE for France and Italy as I've usurped the "Germanic" title (I'm in 867 so I suppose it is the "Germanic") it would be beautiful as I'm of Frankish culture to transform in the other via decision. The Flag should be blue and gold and the color on map should be a French blue. (The Flag of a Italian HRE? The Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy seems perfect to me!)
  6. To integrate Aquitaine in West Francia I should destroy the title before? All de jure vassals of Aquitaine will become my vassals?

Keep the good work and inutile to say: I concord with Frankatank109; we need to integrate your mod in ours, it is obvious that if we need something for you... well be our guest ;)
My French is not so good as Frank one for sure but strangely I could read it without problems... well the French school book I had taken from my mother and read only one time indeed was useful :p
So something I could try to translate too, but probably it would be not so much "correct"...

This looks nice, I hope it'll be translated soon! :) ( As I can't read and understand french at all )

Just do a quick run through an online translator for a first draft of the translation. Also if you can speak English why did you make the mod first in a language only a minority of players understand?

I mean I can probably make out a lot of French as I know an impressive amount of Latin and cognates, but not most people.
