How we played

We started this game after we concluded Monday Game IV. Since it was already late (after 22 CET), we played for about hour and half only. In game terms, it was one month, so we reached October 1938.

Since it is already almost three weeks back, I don't remember anything more... :)

Hot Spot Iberian Peninsula 1938/39

Madrid, Spain. The spanish civil war is, after almost 2 years of fighting, still not over. Republican stronghold is still the south, whereas the National stronghold remains the north. Madrid, former capital of Unified Spain, has been changing sides for months now. It appears that when one side gains the upper hand, the other side does not seem to fall, but instead launch a counter offensive and stabilize the front again.
Well informed circles have told us of influencing either side by various alliances, the so-called Axis and the Allies, in particular. Despite of some expert's predictions, the Nationals seem not to be able to turn the tide and end the civil war. This appears to be a sign of an 'undeclared poltical war' between the major alliances, whereas the Allies, who appear to be on the Republican side, seem to have the most influence on the factions and passively force the Republican side to win by sending supplies, experts say.
However, these accusations were proven wrong and seem to lack any real background, as high ranking officials deny involvement in the Civil war.

These claims by Allied officials seem to be right, as a surprising alliance between the Comintern and Republican Spain was declared. The Soviet Union might have been the financial backup for the Republican forces.
This was a surprising move by the Soviet Union, which had remained quiet during the last years. Experts argue about the use of this move by the new Soviet leader. Will it be used as a measure of pressure against the allies? A communist stronghold in South Europe would only be the first step of creating a communist Europe.
There have been no reports of Communists and Allies having contact with each other, nullifying claims of Communist and Allied comradeship. However, the alliance might have been a reactionary move, since Portugal already joined the Allies. If tensions would increase, The Soviets might as well take Gibraltar and take control of the western entrance into the mediterranean and/or even threating France.

In any case, the Republicans have not won yet, despite Soviet ship movements noticed by german and british spyplanes. The Axis's step in this conflict remains to be seen. Risking a war with the Soviet union by further supplying the Fascist north, or even entrance of the Nationals into the axis would almost certainly would ignite the cowder keg which is the Iberian peninsula right now. A lot lies within the hands of the civil war's parties. If the Fascist north, despite all odds, should win, this would seriously cause a threat to France in the North, which will be surrounded by fascist nations. It would be in France's interest that no participant in the spanish civil war gains the upper hand, for now.

Asian Crisis: The japanese question

Jakarta, Indonesia, '38. The new leader of Japan riddles western leaders. In late September of 1938, the Japanese Emperor brought fighting in China to a close. Since June '37 Imperial Japan had been at war with China, since then controlling most China in the North and East. All of a sudden, fighting disrupted and troops were immediately pulled back to the Eastern coast of China to be shipped back to Japan. It is not known what moved the Emperor to step back on claims of chinese soil. Only Machuria and the Eastern province of Nantong stayed in Japan's hands.
Some experts claim that unrest in Japan was due to the Japanese pullback of their troops. War had dragged along for more then a year, with no other result then a stalemate in eastern China. victory was no where near.
However, hopes of a peaceful Japan were utterly shaken by a sudden declaration of war on Holland. Until late '38, Holland held preciouse provinces known as the Dutch East Indies, which are known for their riches in raw materials as well for their strategical value. This sparked fears of Japan able to reach India, Australia and eventually threatening the united states.

Fighting started around October 15th/16th. Japanese forces where able to quickly occupy the Indonesian Islands, such as Sumatra, Java and Celebes. Fighting was basically over at the end of November, no more acquisitions were being done after that time. Hopes that Holland would accept peace offers were wrong, peace offers on the dutch side were denied from the Japanese, being "not enough".

Asian Crisis: The japanese question, Part 2: Japanese Aircraft carriers spotted in the North Sea

London, England, January/February '39. The general public was in shock when the word spread that Japanese Aircraft carriers as well as minor ships were spotted in the Channel. apparantly, the japanese leader decided to take out Holland once and for all. A mere month later, Holland had been puppeted by Imperial Japan and surrendered the Dutch East Indies to Japan. Pictures of Japanese soldiers fighting along the Grachten of Amsterdam quickly spread around the world. The fairly quick defeat of continental Holland sparked disbelief as well as anger in the houses of parliament.
We have yet to see what Japans further plans regarding expansion are. Only the infamous emperor knows for sure.

Chiang Kai Shek joins the Axis!

Nanjing, China, late 1938. Yesterday the leader of National China, Chiang Kai Shek, announced that China will be from now on part of the Axis. This move was entirely surprising, foreign politics experts say. Western democracies see this as a step back of China towards extreme autocracy, we will of course inform you about the latest developments in this case.

Bulgaria and Romania join Axis powers!

Bukarest/Sofia, Southeastern Europe, ealry 1939. Further additions to the Axis powers now include Bulgaria and Romania. Western leaders are displeased to see the axis powers to grow, in terms of IC, Army, Naval size as well as Airforce size. Imminent conflict is looming in Old Europe.

How we played

We started within 30 minutes from scheduled start. All were present and also Januss joined us. That made us group of 11. :) We had few rehosts, all due to CTDs. Most of them were due to naval actions as far as we can tell. We eneded just before midnight (Central European Time), which allowed us to reach July 1939. That is more than 4 months of gameplay. We went on slow speed most of the time, since war already broke out in the world.

Well, here we go. In the figures i used are the army sizes compared, since the rest is a pain to do. I will add these later, eventually, or somebody can do that for me plz, since i waste about more than 2 hours each week for the AARs to be good :)

AAR - Day 3

Monday's game was brought to a close on July 11th, 1939, after we started on April 1st.
So roughly a bit more than 3 months of gameplay.

WAR!

The Hague, Netherlands. The so-called "Allies" have declared war upon the Netherlands and it's ally, Japan on the 20th of April 1939. The DoW upon The Netherlands has been the result of hostile activities of Japan in the last 6 months. In October of last year, Japan occupied the Dutch East Indies in order to gain the precious resources of Indonesia. However, since the 1921 occupation of Manchuria and the 1937/38 war with China Japan was isolated in the democratic community of the world, and only drew autocratic governments closer. The declaration of War was sudden, yet not unexpected in the end. A sure bet is that the japanese government was shocked when they still had the large carrier fleet near the north sea. However, the DoW came a little late, or else the Japanese Navy would have been trapped in the North Sea. Although advanced in technical issues, the IJN would have been too small to hold on against the more numerous British ships.

The conflict gets hot!

London, GB. Shocking news have arrived our offices this morning on May 1st, 1939. The Japanese have announced their entry into the Axis powers this night. We cannot yet be sure if that also means we are at war with the Axis powers and its leading faction Germany, however there are no doubts that they will join the fighting. Rumours spread that Germany is already firing their first artillery rounds towards France. We will of course keep you up-to-date.

+++++ News Flash +++++

Paris falls!

London, GB. Paris, the former French capital, has fallen to german hands after a battle lasting for only two days on May 25th, 1939. It took Axis forces less than one month since the Japanese entry into the axis to overrun the french capital. The french were sheer overwhelmed by the German forces which were more numerous and better equipped. With the fall of Paris, experts agree that france will not hold out any longer. It is only a matter of time until France will fall.

+++++ News Flash +++++

The east is burning!

Berlin, Germany. While German forces in the west are steamrolling France, the Poles, who just joined the Allies before the DoW on the Japanese, where advancing through Prussia and occupieing east prussia. A defense of well equipped, but outnumbered defenders held the border along the Oder river.
It seems as if the Germans want to finish the French first. However, the Romanians, who just joined the cause before the outbreak of war, thrusted through Polish defenselines in the south of Poland. However, after weeks of advance the polish forces were able to stabilize the Front.

+++++ News Flash +++++

France surrenders!

London, GB. Countries from all over the world were in shock when France surrendered on June 8th. In only 1 month and 8 days the French, once a proud and big nation, were defeated. There have been reports of high ranking government officials to have escaped certain death by sailing down to west african french colonies. On the same date, a new government was formed, so called Vichy France. However, it is not governed from Vichy, as the name suggests, due to the massive destruction of the city, but in the neighboring Province of Aquitaine.
The former french colonies in the Near East and madagascar have declared independence, while indochina was claimed by the japanese.

Nationalist Spain shares France's fate

After more than 1 year of civil war, Republican forces have finally overcome the Nationalist's fortifications in the North by Soviet help. The Nationalist forces surrendered on June 11th.

Poland falls!
Berlin, Germany. On July 11th, after a 2 week lasting battle of Warsaw, the city finally was sacked by the Germans. Romanians from the East, Hungarians from the south and Germans from the west attacking Warsaw polish forces were fighting surprisingly reasonable against superior Axis forces. However, the last stronghold of Polish defenders was flattened in a last attack yesterday morning. So far, the war in Europe has been brought to a close.

Unrest in Asia

Nanjing, China. After the allied DoW on Japan and Japan joining the Axis Asia is a powderkeg. Earlier this year Siam got incorporated into the Asian alliance with Japan, and with China in the axis as well, the powderkeg which is Asia right now is about to explode. With An expansionist Japan, which made bold moves against Ceylon, and a China ready to expand, more destruction is imminent.
Japanese forces surprise attacked Ceylon and conquered the north, until repelled by British bombers. The attack fleet had to be called back, although more than 2 transports have been reported to be lost. After this setback, the japanese seemed to lack any real possible targets. Australia, which had until been quite patient regarding attacks, now was invaded by the japanese. The attack came surprising, and the North of Australia (in this case darwin and surrounding provinces) was occupied.
However, the following attack in the west was repelled by homedefense units and the excellent naval bombers of Britain. However, this set back was not back breaking, but the west of australia necessary for Japan to annex australia was for now unreachable. The IJN sailed eastwards and occupied the startegically important places of Eastern Asutralia. Japanese forces did not face any significant opposition. Time will tell what the next moves of Japan will be.

Brazil joins Comintern!

London, GB. Yesterday was a shocking day as Brazil, the mightiest force in South America, announced it's entry into the Comintern. A surprising move, considered by many experts around the globe. The leaders of Argentine issued concerns about the new entanglement by Brazil and the Soviets.

Pictured below: Australia and Southeast Asia partially occupied by Japanese forces.

Comments:
Japan, as well as Romania and Bulgaria joined the Axis -> hence the big increase in army size
Brazil joined comintern
France fell -> hence the decrease in army size.
Well, that's it for today, probably more to come!

Maybe, for the next time, i should add VPs for the figures, which show the overall mightyness of certain nations.

Unaware if Germany's intention to go for an early war the Allies declared war on an aggressive, Axis-oriented Japan, mainly to get full IC as early as possible. The decision was made not to assist France and to have the UK troops where the chance of mounting a successful defence was thought to be bigger. The RAF and the RN made some attempts to assist the French, but in the air the first battles were for the Luftwaffe. After Germany had occupied the province of Vichy both the French and the British commander thought that the Vichy-event wouldn't fire and the decision to evacuate as many French troops as possible was taken. As we found out shortly afterwards that was to no avail. France fell faster than expected. The Allied commanders were happy with the Polish performance...until they miraculously became Danish. Orders were cancelled which hampered the defence greatly and Poland was annexed.

In the East, where tough times are expected with China in the Axis, Japan nearly surprised the defenders of Ceylon, but the RAF unexpectedly saved the situation. Australia was invaded but the Japanese got a bloody nose in Perth. The fighting is far from over Down Under. Overall the Allies are happy with the way things have gone so far. Not unimportantly France fell quickly, but the UK is on top of the situation in Africa and an Italian battleship was sunk in the Med. Japanese advances were made into UK territory as expected, but regaining control of Ceylon, the way the defence of Australia has gone and the sinking of two transports, one definately full, were bright spots which made the recently appointed Churchill happy.

US Report - Session 3

Watching all of it from behind the oceans

Still isolationistic United States were watching beginning of The War from relatively safe distance. Two big oceans separating us from the conflict give us enough confidence yet. However we no longer feel confortable.

US policy towards Japan is shaped by our overall tendency to avoid interferences. Our diplomats continuosly worked on improving our relations, but results were only moderate. After Japanses DoW on Netherlands, US became more suspicious towards country of rising Sun. It was demonstrated when US Coast Guard spotted submarines of Imerial Navy near Wake Island. Reaction of White House was not immediate, but when it finally came, it was clear and categorical: All Japanese vessels were called to leave US waters. If they wouldn't, United States will embargo Japan.

Japanese were reluctant to withdraw their ships first and in return demanded US patrols to leave shores of Marshall Islands. Later though, they decided to accept American terms and recalled their submarines from Wake. It was relief for most Americans since last thing they wanted was to lose their contracts with Japan. Political elite was also satisfied with this result.

Gearing up for the future

One and a half year before presidential elections, hawkish tendencies within the union resulted in significant change of government policy. Congress finally acknowledged that size of US Army is insufficient even for pure defece of the country. Military budget was rised and campaign to support building new, modern army was launched. If pre-election year won't bring any change in this matter, United States should be set up for the future well.

How we played

It was painful session with plenty of rehosts, crashes and delays. We started 30 minutes later then scheduled start is. Passing first month costed us three hours. But after 2330, we established rather stable play and made it to the beginning of October 1939. We ended at about 2 am CET :D

I will do yet another AAR if you wish, however it would be very nice if you could provide some insights on the early session (wasn't there, thanks again to NITRATE who subbed me really good!).

There must have been really great things happened. I, for example wish to know how the US and the SU got into the war.

Germany started this session by formally annexing Poland and the Danish surrender fired with the reload. This completed the main phase of the conquest of Western Europe and so there was some consideration of what to do next. I was quite certain, in my own mind, that the Soviet Union should be attacked swiftly. Soviet troop concentrations had been sighted in Spain and Mongolia and so it seemed likely that they were not well-prepared for a blitzkrieg in Europe.

The other members of the Axis demurred somewhat as Japan, in particular, was not ready for a war on that front. But a nominal start date of 1 August was set to give them two weeks to prepare. In the meantime, Netherlands was liberated as its territory was then formally owned by the UK who had annexed it. German belligerence was still about 46 so Flanders was liberated too to bring German belligerence down to about 40. I was expecting 10% dissent for these two liberations but got another 5% from somewhere - perhaps the Danish event was considered to be another liberation? 15% dissent was a nuisance but not enough to suspend offensive action.

The USA got some gear-up events like the Arsenal of Democracy at this time and after some rhetoric from President Ederon about eternal peace, the USA joined the allies. This meant that there was now little need to hold down Axis belligerence and so the Axis declared war upon the recalcitrant Chinese warlords and made ready to attack the Soviet Union.

Romania ceded provinces in N.E. Poland to Germany which, with Germany's other holdings, provided a good springboard for an offensive directed at Moscow and Leningrad. Germany armies assembled there while the Balkan Axis states formed a screen of units on the Ukraine front.

The Balkan states were preoccupied with the liquidation of Yugoslavia and this country proved to be quite a handful when it was attacked by all the states encircling it. Canadian military advisors did a fine job of master-minding Yugoslav counter-attacks and then forming a strong last stand for Belgrade.

The target date of 1 August for Barbarossa was missed due to legal complications - an old non-aggression pact. This and other friction added more than a week of delay and the attack upon the Soviets started in mid August. But it seemed that Stalin had gone to his summer dacha and there was several days of delay and confusion while he was found (Traks appeared to be afk which we discovered when rehosting, two days into the offensive). The Politburo was not amused and changes were made at the top (Konrad replaced Traks).

The new Soviet leadership now struggled to keep up with the German offensive moves. Strong thrusts were made towards Smolensk which soon fell and the Soviets started a general retirement while their reserves were transferred from the Far East. This then opened up the Ukraine front and Bulgarian cavalry led the way in exploiting these open spaces while the Rumanian army struggled to keep up.

We finished six weeks into the campaign on October 3rd, 1939. Leningrad has just fallen after a token defense. In the south, Rostov and Sevatopol have fallen and a large Soviet army was encircled and captured at Kharkov. But the Soviets are fighting fiercely for their capital and have some 40 divisions there which have been making bold counter-attacks against the German forces which are attempting to encircle and storm this strong point. There are now about 50 German divisions besieging the capital but their impetus has been lost now and two assaults have been repulsed. The Red Air Force has air superiority and the skies are black with their hundreds of interceptors.

Elsewhere, it is all quiet on the Western front. A strong German army glares at Soviet/Spanish forces camped in the Pyrennees while the Italian army starts to enjoys the pleasures of the flesh in occupied territory...

US Report - Session 4

World Oil Auction in summer 1939

After evaluation of international situtation, US government decided to make Oil Auctions more dynamic. Instead of year long deals, shorter time periods were decided - three months. First auction of this kind was held during first two weeks of September 1939. All foreign countries were invited to make their bids for 100.000 barrels of oil from US. Despite apparent attractiveness of this offer, just two countries made actual bids. Yet before end of the auction, situation changed dramatically as United States entered alliance led by United Kingdom, thus entering war with Axis.

Major turnaround in US policy

September was marked by dramatic events, diplomatic conflict and finally, major change in US foreign policy. It all happened the same time as Oil Auction was held. US patrolls near Marshall Islands spotted Japanese troop transports moving towards Wake Island. US president was immediately alarmed and Japanese ambassador was called for a visit. It was very unplesant since it already happened once in the past. On direct question what are these ships doing in vicinity of American islands ambassador answered in the way that thay were just moving from other theater. It sounded reasonable, but I was not enough for the president.

To prevent future collision of this type, US demanded following: every time Japan or any other country not allied nor in war state with US intend to pass by US territory, they must inform US Department of Defence in advance. Otherwise such act would be taken as an act of aggression and will be answered respectively.

This offer was fiercly rejected by Japan. This was the last trigger which started radical changes in the US attitude on Japan and role of the US in international community. Voices calling for proactive behaviour of United States were so strong they were with no delay adopted by the government.

Offer made by United Kingdom, country very close to US both culturally and economically, was accepted and United States joined Allies.

First encounters

Short after this, US Navy had to face Japanese in the Pacific. First it was bombing of US fleets near Wake Island. Japanese bombers proved to be weak enemy. But soon real Japanese force sailed in. Huge fleet counting almost 50 vessels with major presence of carriers first reprelled US patrols from Marshall Islands and later wiped out fleet near Wake. This allowed Japanese to take the Island.

Later, Philippines were invaded and it is now only matter of time when it surrenders.

Now i see that my sub was somewhat aggressive. hmmm. more aggressive than me? interesting. :D
And how dare you call my naval bombers weak :D
They just don't know better than just flying into your ships...

This session saw the Italian Empire break even, with the losses of her African colonies Italy gained vauluable the Balkan land of Yugoslavia, but not without a fight. The total invasion of Yugoslavia cost Italy more men and time then what was initially expected, under the command of a French-Canadian military advisor Yugoslavia was able to counter the Italian southern army and even invade undefended Bulgaria.

Seeing the events unfold, the Italian command returned the nearly 100,000 men initially pulled from the invasion back to Yugoslavia and promptly marched foward to Belgrade where a siege ensued. But the mistakes already occured and steps will need to be taken insure that the Italian army is only overestimated for good reasons.

Meanwhile in the Mediterranean, Italian ships sink far inferior allied ships making sure to stay away from the far superior ones. An invasion of Crete was a near sucess until the naval forces of the UK intercepted the landing force where the British BB sank a TP squadron, fortunately no division was on it.

The future operations remain ambitous but with the looming powers of USA and UK making and ever so presence around the world who knows what will happen next session.

The Axis clearly made a plan to take France out with a concentrated attack and then deal with the SU as soon as possible. The UK and its Allies profit from the breathing space given by this Axis strategy. When China joined the Axis on Sep 1 1938, the British High Command had gloomy visions of large Axis armies moving into Burma and India, while at the same time put under pressure in Gibraltar and Egypt, but none of this all. Strangely enough UK troops have only been involved in 4 land battles, all of them offensive from the UK point of view. The Allies had a very good session, but there is reason to worry, because it's obvious that the Axis will come after the Allies in full force if the SU is conquered.

As mentioned the session has been very positive. The main reason behind this is that the intervention slider of the US moved left quickly and they decided to enter the war on the Allied side. This movement was very sudden, which even led to disbelief and confusion in London. I'm not sure which event caused this steps left. Libya was taken unopposed and with Brazilian help British Guyana was liberated from Japanese occupation. The fighting in the Mediterranean and the East was very light and apart from the RAF activity in various theatres hardly can be called more than skirmishes.

Out of the 3 different US gearings events in hoi2.txt in the events folder, 2 contain pro-interventionist slider moves. Again this could have been changed in 1.3, but if I'm not mistaken the US can only have a maximum of 3 gearings. In our game 5 fired, which probably explains why the US intervention value came down as much as it did up to the point of the US war entry. Possibly 2 are bugs, but you know better than me if this is WAD or not. Especially the first one I think is suspect. I tried to explain it after the 2nd session to feed my curiosity, but only managed to explain the 2nd (Dutch-Japanese war).

By the way cancelling a Non-Aggression Pact costs 5% dissent, so this probably explains why you have 15% dissent and not 10% as you expected.

Doesn't the japanese surprise attack have some effects on the intervention slider? ( I know it does move the hawk's )
