But most of them are direct from the in-game Mercenary Unit Heraldry Selection and have no past BattleTech association. : )

I did, on GMG. I also have no clue how to add those keys to this place, either.
I think I redeemed mine under edit account(top right corner)>redeem ... but I really can't remember. There was a thread one this ... maybe a mod like @Timaeus can help.
HBS Backer and Paradox purchases have Avatars and game icons at the moment. If I recall correctly, GMG and certain other game key sales points may need to wait until their point of purchase sends them a key at Launch. Then once the game is on a Paradox Forum goers computer, it may be synced with their Paradox forum account and appropriate Avatars and game icons will be gained.

It appears that your key will be redeemable on Steam so once it's redeemed you will be able to link your steam account via https://accounts.paradoxplaza.com/settings. It may take some time, but once it's linked you should have the selection of avatars available, plus be able to add any game badges you have under 'owned items'.

I shall use this one for the forums, but I intend to make a Celtic triskelion knot for in game use. Just have to figure out how to change it a bit with coloring now between here and Tuesday.

I think some mech portraits would be a good addition to the avatars. Of course, if they add an Urbie avatar, no one will pick anything else!
