That's what i call a human badboy war. A gangbang is when a fairly average, or even stronger but still stoppable country is attacked by overhelming (and i do not mean measly 2:1 odds, more like >4:1) force with a goal of not stopping it but with goal of large gains for everyone involved. Which is more than often a bad planning at least of some players of the attacking side.
Non-human BB also decreases on different speeds according to monarch diplomatic skill and how your country is built (DP sliders). The same could be said of humand BB :).

How strange to see two old-timers from days long gone popping up in this thread (which is almost a torture to read).

Anyway, I appreciate it if from now on only on-topic posts are posted here.

EDIT: My (short) answer the the thread starter:

The balance of an EU2 mp game depends entirely on the mindset of players. If you have a solid group, they will prevent one country from dominating (especially those with already a strong starting position).

and are there certain countries that tend to have a superior or dominating position that always need to be checked, eg Austria with its inheritance or France with the wealth of its provinces, or Spain with its early colonial empire.

Or is it someone else that tends to need being countered? Perhaps OE with its distance from many players.

The OE, imo, is still a country that few (if none) can challenge on their own. Their ability to expand into AI territory, which is conected by land to Instanbul (their capital), gives them tremendous MP, decent wealth, and awesome census taxes.

They are the bane to many a nations, specially to Austria/Russia early on (if OE decides to turn into a greedy bastard). Spain rarely matches the OE's ship supply limit, even if it owns all of italy.

Properly played, specially early on (till 1600's) the OE can be unstopable. And its not one war, or 2, that are going to finish em off. Unless you are evil enough to take the straits near Instabul, to cut em off from a majority of their MP and a good slice of their income.

does the whole tech group difference not weigh them down eventually? A CRT is a big difference or does trade monopolies in its conquest areas catch it up?

What about Austria are its inheritance not unbalancing? And its likley german gains are majorly wealthy.

Torture is an understatement.:)

Though I enjoy Eu2 MP drama, those big killer posts stopped me from reading everything, which is a shame really.

Anyway I look forward to see you all playing Eu3 MP soonish.

Played properly the OE can keep in check in tech - and even be ahead of tech. The only thing that really hurts the OE is the lack of leaders, but that can be compensated by the awesome MP - throw half your army against an ubber leader like Prinz Eugen and see who's the one getting kicked.
