Are there future events tied to this decision? What about Issue Currency? Those were the decisions I was asking about several posts. Is there a post on this forum where it is discussed what they do?

It's a one time thing. Definitely do it to clear the dissent.

Issue Currency only happens when you are short of money. It can be redone.

Another thing is the election decision. I played it a few times in earlier games. Random events show up that increase dissent and you either take a fixed penalty, like 3 or roll for plus or minus 2 more. Win if dissent is still less than 10. The only use I can think of for this is if there is a push towards a policy goal.

At start of game, I was trying to get towards full free market, because that was doing well for me in HoI2. The better choice is whichever one is closer. So we overlooked better choices.

Then there were the brigades you said you disbanded, which saves a whole bunch of IC upgrading units you did not want and giving MP flexibility.

When I first played, I tried to micromanage the transports, then watched my troops starve wondering why my transports were not getting there. The reasons I can think of for managing transports is cutting routes I do not need, managing routes (specifically if I want to get away from the English Channel), managing escorts. If I really want to be cheesy in HoI2, then just set up a massive supply convoy at 23h with a negligible chance they get caught.

I was also trying to manage my resource cap, selling excess resources and supplies for cash. Then I got tired of doing this every month and there might not have been enough cash in the world to pay for our resources anyway.

I ran into an issue where Paris fell and we had no way to supply our troops and had attrition every day and decided to take a break and restart the month rather than muddle through it. Okay we exited and forgot to save. There we go. :)

The map is still playable, but not according to plan and this is enough reason for a restart. We were planning to keep France in the game for a bit longer. When I played HoI1 and normal difficulty, we ere able to stall in France indefinitely. At VH HoI1, Vichy happened because the Germans were much more powerful. A full game of HoI1 took me several tries. HoI2 at normal was also a couple starts. VH I never finished because I got tired, but realized I could start a war with Japan very early.

The map as it has been played seems not far from history. Fall of France is just a few weeks behind schedule. We salvaged a couple islands from Denmark. Norway is in play. Italy is not yet in play. Germany has not much naval force. We need an air force to compete and we just have to survive for a year and wait for the war with USSR.

I'm on the fence about this, actually. I will sleep on it. We are going to run into a lot more issues where I wish I knew at the start. The scenario runs until 1964 or so. Does WW3 happen or just a cold war? The fact the scenario runs to 1964 indicates it's more playable with USA or USSR than UK.

HOI1 or HOI2 would be interesting if we get a game where Germany and USSR make the unholy alliance.

Enough random subjects.

I've noticed that I can cheese the election decision though...because if your dissent is over 5%, you can choose one of two options (Military Parade, which costs supplies but lowers dissent...or Promise More Spending, which lowers dissent but also lowers money generation) to lower dissent by 2%. And these can be IMMEDIATELY TAKEN AGAIN, until dissent is below 5%.

Not sure that is working as intended...and anyway, the game still models the ACTUAL election results...so I don't see this as something I would do as a major Democratic Power...

At start of game, I was trying to get towards full free market, because that was doing well for me in HoI2. The better choice is whichever one is closer. So we overlooked better choices.

Generally, I try to get full hawk lobby at the beginning...to free up more IC.

When I first played, I tried to micromanage the transports, then watched my troops starve wondering why my transports were not getting there. I just let the transports do what the AI tells it to do. I just bulk build transports and escorts and don't worry about micromanaging it. If your navy is winning the battle of the seas, then this won't be a problem for long.

I was also trying to manage my resource cap, selling excess resources and supplies for cash. Then I got tired of doing this every month and there might not have been enough cash in the world to pay for our resources anyway.

I setup the AI to make deals where I try to stockpile key resources, but trade freely everything else. This is not really a problem for the UK, as you have plenty of resources and plenty of trading partners. It's much more important to get right as Italy or Germany.

WW3 can definitely happen. In Insanely Stronk, I deliberately kept us out of a hot WW3 because of my personal preference...instead setting up a Cold War.

It's fine if you want to restart. There is plenty to figure out and understand in Darkest Hour...heck, I'm still figuring out what all the units do...which was a big reason for Insanely Stronk in the first place!

Except for the central planning move, that is a very positive event for you. You should have taken it as soon as you had the money. Issue currency would have given you the cash to enact that decision. Also, extend partial mobilization would have given you a chance for manpower so you could build more. I don't often play UK, but I would have built interceptors 2x99 run, at least 8 navs, and at least 8 escorted tacs with at least another 8 unescorted tacs. Then CVs with all brigades, 2x more CLs than CVs, and asw brigades for all my DDs. Passively upgrade militia to inf and build art brigades for them. Make sure you have a minimum of 3xinf/art on every beach for the home islands. Upgrade airfields to lvl 10 with high infrastructure to repair your planes faster. Put at least 1 radar with each airfield for the combat bonus. If you must try to save France, take military control of their units. Base their aircraft and ships in the UK. That gives you a better chance to get those units iirc. Build rocket sites only when too low on manpower to build units. Build a west coast port(Glasgow?) To level 10 with max infrastructure and AA for a safe harbor to repair your ships. Consider a level 10 airfield and a radar there too. Good luck SoL

Muddling Through the Darkest Hour Session 32A - The Miracle of Dunkirk

We were probably better off muddling than reloading, until the Vichy event triggers, but we will see what happens when we abandon France. There are more rules we should be finding out. It also looks like the Battle of Britain will happen and we will see what results we get from all those radar stations.

I will think about questions as I go along.
What is a good compliment of ships to go with the UK 12 Battleships and 3 Battlecruisers against air units? One is Aircraft Carrier. Another is bad weather. Another is air cover. Another is distance. Some Light Cruisers have some air attack.

How does naval bomber combat work against naval units? They appear to single out a group, but do they also single out the biggest, ugliest ship in that group and attack it? Does each ship get to fire at the Naval Bomber or just the one targeted?

News from the Front:
July 2, 1940 - The USA started a major construction project for the Dutch Harbor Naval Base.
July 4, 1940 - We have a victory in Amiens and the French have a victory in Troyes. We have a little bit of time remaining.
July 5, 1940 - Something unthinkable happened. The French recaptured Troyes.
July 6, 1940 - A 6 hour air raid on Dieppe only takes out half a transport. We will try to run air cover.
July 8, 1940 - The Germans captured Chateau Thierry and the French are marching away from Paris.
July 9, 1940 - The French are broken and leaving Paris. It will not be that much longer.
July 10, 1940 - Here we abandon the mainland.
1752536773505.png

We actually took out a German Squadron in this battle!
1752536850296.png

July 16, 1940 - Here is a result from one of those air raids I was complaining about several posts ago.
1752537882899.png

July 16, 1940 - Germans roll into Paris. This is where I left off last time as I did not want to deal with supply issues. We will continue this fight from the islands.
1752538221244.png

July 17, 1940 - We can sign off on a Destroyers for Bases deal with the USA when we want to. We are going to wait a bit and see what happens next.

Upgrade Parade:
July 3, 1940 - 1/2 Belgian Fighter Squadrons upgraded to Hawker Hurricane.
July 9, 1940 - 2/2 Belgian Fighter Squadrons upgraded to Hawker Hurricane.

Production:
July 9, 1940 - Lincoln 100% Infrastructure. In spite of what the game manual says, this does a whole bunch of nothing. The game manual describes game concepts in such general terms.

Technology:
40-7 Multirole Fighter completed July 2, 1940
40G Improved dm Radar Warning Sites started July 2, 1940 by Robert Watson Watt
40-8 Basic Field Artillery completed July 9, 1940
40H Basic Static Anti Air Artillery started July 9, 1940 by Royal Small Arms Factory

Spy v Spy:
July 6, 1940 - USSR tried to delay our production. If they are playing oddsmaker, they are choosing the wrong side.

RIP List:
July 11, 1940 - 3 Convoy Transports and 1 Escort sunk at Skagarrak. Our total is now 48 Transports and 1 Escort.

July 18, 1940 - Now that Paris is down, Italy joined the war against us. They will come to regret this decision. Granted, we only have 12 Divisions defending Egypt from two sides. We were hesitant to move our evacuees to Egypt in case the Italians joined the war at a most inconvenient moment.
1752538597449.png

We are up against:
63 Divisions +1 HQ
4 Fighters +10 Bombers
3 Battleships
14 Submarines
44 Cruisers and Destroyers
26 Transports

Muddling Through the Darkest Hour Session 32B - August 1, 1940 - Mediterranean Seas of Blood

I better take a quick save before continuing, because we made a big post.

Okay, maybe counters are better than dolls. The arrow gives a more clear picture where units are headed. Further, we found that all Italian East African units are Militia. This makes it a lot easier to defend.

News from the Front:
July 19, 1940 - We survived the first day of war against Italy. USA announced an ultimatum against Japan and an Oil Embargo.
With Italy now in the war, it is very safe to guarantee Greek Independence. Maybe in this timeline we will keep Crete.
1752539577887.png

Looking at the map right now, Greece is a long way from the Axis.
Our Naval Bomber found the Battleship group at Cape Passero. However, it is not nearly as powerful as the German 4 that were operating last year. We did some damage, but need several days to recover. We also saw an Italian group of bombers attacking the French fleet. If those are 8 Naval Bombers, then we might be hurting in short order.

July 21, 1940 - We might have scored first blood against the RM off the coast of Sicily. We will continue our patrol to the African coast.
July 22, 1940 - Italians moved very quickly into Egypt, captured As Sollum.
Holy crap - The Italians have 9 Naval Bombers! Our Naval Bombers got butchered trying to leave Malta.
July 23, 1940 - This was enough for us to smuggle some Hurricanes into Malta.

July 26, 1940 - Good news - We landed in Assab. Bad news - It is claimed for France.
July 27, 1940 - Italians captured Bir Baylin. They should be in Alexandria by the end of the month.
We got kind of smashed over Malta as German Squadrons joined the Italian air raid. We might face the wrath of the Naval Bombers again.
HMS Malaya got mauled and we are a long way from port.

July 28, 1940 - Germany started their Diplomatic Offensive.
Italians captured Sidi Barrani. They are consolidating Egypt.

Upgrade Parade:
July 20, 1940 - HMS PoW AA upgrade - We might do well not to build such an attachment in the first place, because by the time such a ship is built, the attachments are all obsolete. We might do well not to build the ship in the first place. All action is now in the Mediterranean and the PoW is sitting idle in Scapa Flow. -_-
July 25, 1940 - Medium Tank upgrade
July 27, 1940 - HMS PoW Floatplane upgrade

Production:
July 25, 1940 - Interceptor 8 No 211 RAF Fighter Group
July 28, 1940 - Interceptor 9

40J Perimeter Defense Doctrine started July 30, 1940 by Hugh Dowding

Sunk Ships:
July 21, 1940 - Capa Passero
TP2 Squadrone Maria sunk by HMS Resolution
TP2 Squadrone Vallelunga sunk by HMS Malaya

DD4 DdT 2 sunk by HMS Malaya

July 22, 1940 - Coast of Malta
CL2 RM Taranto sunk by HMS Royal Sovereign
TP2 S Rina Corrado sunk by HMS Valiant
TP2 S Tripoli sunk by HMS Rodney
TP2 S Aventino sunk by HMS Valiant

July 25, 1940 - Coast of Benghazi

TP2 S Lussino sunk by HMS Valiant
TP2 S Panigalia sunk by HMS Ramillies
TP2 DdT 5 sunk by HMS Resolution
DD4 DdT 15 sunk by HMS Resolution
TP2 S Cherso sunk by HMS Royal Sovereign
We got away with it and our Malta Hurricanes spared us from most of the wrath of the Italian Naval Bombers.

July 27, 1940 - Gulf of Gabes
TP2 DdT 7 sunk by HMS Renown
TP2 S Giorgio Orsina sunk by HMS Warspite
TP2 S Puccini sunk by HMS Barham
TP2 S Gianpaolo sunk by HMS Malaya
DD5 DdC 7 sunk by HMS Rodney
CL3 RM Campania sunk by HMS Barham

Mediterranean Submarine War:
July 24, 1940 - We sunk 11 Transports in the Sea of Gabes. The French appear to be outscoring us, because the tally is 25 Transports and 1 Escort.

RIP List:
July 19, 1940 - 1 Convoy Transport lost in the Sea of Sicily. This seems to be a very small loss given the start of a new war.
July 23, 1940 - HMS Royal Oak sunk off the coast of Malta by Italian Naval Bombers. They have 9 of them. This is no longer a small loss.
July 23, 1940 - HMS Delhi sunk off the coast of Malta by Italian Naval Bombers.
July 25, 1940 - We lost another 4 Convoy Transports in the Sea of Sicily.
July 28, 1940 - Another 4 Convoy Transports in the Sea of Sicily. We are slowly bleeding.
July 29, 1940 - HMS Malaya sunk off Coast of Benghazi by Italian Naval Bombers. That's 2 Battleships now.

August 1, 1940 - Paris is still in German hands, but has not yet surrendered. We are not yet sure how to process the exchange in the Mediterranean. We count:
2 BB and 1 CL from our side.
3 CL 5 DD 17 TP from their side.
We count about 9500 to 6500 in their favor.

Body Count:
239506 Personnel 1207 Fighters 125 Bombers - UK
900315 Personnel 1834 Fighters 1315 Bombers - France - They are fighting this war for us.

817819 Personnel 4632 Fighters 4626 Bombers - Germany
152282 Personnel 92 Fighters 152 Bombers - Italy

Here is the map. I believe I have been told that this is a USSR wins kind of map, simply because the US AI cannot help us.
1752547321945.png

This is a closer look at France.
1752547406517.png

It looks like they moved their capital and are somewhat reorganized. I was not sure when the Vichy event happens or what happens after. Probably after, we will never want to play a DH game with the Vichy event and learn how to do everything to avoid it.

You have some good decisions to choose from. Make sure to take the dissent causing choices first then take the decisions that erase dissent

On my phone, so I really can't go indepth but look at women work for example. More manpower for some dissent iirc. Pair that with a decision that reduces dissent. War propaganda or destroyers for bases? Don't they reduce dissent for the UK? I really need to play UK again as I forget their specifics. Just analyze all the decisions and take them in a logical order to gain the most for the least dissent. Sell bulk resources in the open negotiations page for cash or supplies as needed to pay for decisions. Jmo, ymmv

Also, don't waste offensive chit. You only get it once. Be sure to stockpile supplies before you trigger it. Personally, I wouldn't waste it in Africa . imo, save it for Husky or something. Jmo, ymmv

Muddling Through the Darkest Hour Session 33 - September 1, 1940 - The Vichy Regime

There are too many things I do not know that prevents me from restarting from the top. A lot of this is centered around naval combat and how to counter things like naval bomber stack. This might be an issue of recognizing the issue is Aircraft Carriers are the way of the future.

An alternate explanation I read online was the Atlantic and Pacific theaters are different. More specifically, Aircraft Carriers are more prone to bad weather while Battleships are more immune to bad weather and the Atlantic Theater is a Battleship zone. The UK starts with 12 of them and 3 Battlecruisers.

The biggest floating counter I can come up with is a Leander / Southampton with Improved Hull and Anti-Air.

The other issue I would like to look up is revisiting upgrade costs, because we can count the upgrades we need before the war starts. This is the information we start the game with - what upgrades are coming and how much they cost and the way of the future.

News from the Front:
August 7, 1940 - Italians marched into Siwah, yet another piece of Egypt gone.
August 8, 1940 - All Italian Bombers found our Heavy Submarine fleet.
August 10, 1940 - The Germans sent 16 Bomber Squadrons after Odense. They must really want that island.
August 12, 1940 - Italians capture Bir Faud in Egypt. Our defenders are almost there.
August 14, 1940 - We stopped the westward Italian advance at Tunis with a bunch of Divisions that should be trying to stop the Germans in France.

August 19, 1940 - France considers its options for Armistice with Germany, who proposed the historical partition of France.
1752629954176.png
Italians capture Moghara. They are getting close.

August 21, 1940 - France refuses the Union and accepts the Armistice of Rethondes.
August 26, 1940 - Italians captured Garissa. They are already advancing on Kenya.
August 28, 1940 - France refused the Germans the Atlantic Coast.
August 29, 1940 - Germany, Italy, and Japan sign the Tripartite Pact. Yugoslavia joined the Axis.
We managed to wipe out a single German Fighter Squadron in Benghazi. It's progress.
1752633651749.png

Upgrade Parade Starts again:
August 21, 1940 - 1 Hawker Typhoon upgraded
August 22, 1940 - 2 Hawker Typhoons upgraded
August 27, 1940 - 3/3 Hawker Typhoons upgraded
August 29, 1940 - 1 Hawker Hurricane upgraded

Production:
August 30, 1940 - Interceptor 10 No 213 RAF Fighter Group

Technology:
August 2, 1940 - Right away we achieved a breakthrough. We can research Rocket Interceptor. Should we go ahead and do it?
1752623770394.png

Spy v Spy:
August 22, 1940 - Right away the French steal the Blueprints for Improved Air Carrier. They have all of our Blueprints, anyway.
August 28, 1940 - Germany tried to smear us. World opinion is against them anyway.

Sunk Ships:
August 4, 1940 - Our Heavy Submarines found a contact in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
TP2 S Port de Roma sunk by HMS M2
TP2 S Asmara sunk by HMS M2
August 8, 1940 - Also in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
CL2 RM Quarto sunk by HMS M2
August 11, 1940 - DD3 DdT 8 sunk by SS II/2nd in Capa Passero
August 19, 1940 - TP2 DdT 1 sunk by HMS Durban in the Sea of Sicily

August 19, 1940 - Sea of Sicily
CA4 RM Zara sunk by HMS Cardivv
CL4 RM Alberto di Guissano sunk by HMS Dorsetshire

August 27, 1940 - Skagerrak
USBF 5 sunk by DD 3
USBF 38 sunk by DD 13
USBF 29 sunk by DD 3

August 30, 1940 - Gulf of Sidra
SS DdS 16 sunk by HMS Dorsetshire
SS DdS 17 sunk by HMS Hood

RIP List:
August 7, 1940 - We lost a Convoy Transport and Convoy Escort at Heligoland Bay. It is time to send some curious ships that direction.
August 12, 1940 - We lost another Convoy Transport in the Sea of Sicily
August 17, 1940 - HMS Despatch and Rear Admiral Sitman sunk in the Gulf of Cagliari by RM Alberto di Guissani
August 25, 1940 - 2nd Transport Fleet sunk in port at Malta by the Italian Bombers.
August 25, 1940 - Jacob van Heemskerck was a writeoff and we converted it to 7 Convoy Escorts.

The Mediterranean Sub War:
August 2, 1940 - We sunk 4 Convoy Transports in Cape Passero.
August 7, 1940 - Another 13 Convoy Transports and 2 Escorts in Tyrrhenian Sea.

I will try to add a better summary, but here is a map.
1752634324323.png

If we are playing historical, then the name of the game is to survive for about one year. We are up against:
178 Divisions +3 Armor +11 HQ - Germany
23 Fighters +30 Bombers - and a lot of them are in Africa.
21 Submarines +22 Transports - that do not appear to be threatening Norway.

62 Divisions +1 HQ - Italy
4 Fighters +10 Bombers - and 9 of those are Naval Bombers
3 Battleships, 9 Submarines, 4 Transports, 28 Destroyers and Cruisers - A lot of them are stationed in Taranto

Wow that was a prompt answer! Thanks! Well, we have:
3/3 Fighters upgraded
1/10 Interceptors upgraded

Since I'm up for a few more, I should try to find better pictures.

I'm working on Insanely Stronk, making final edits on the next chapter...and also refreshing the forum occasionally. :)

I got confused and thought Insanely Stronk was your USSR campaign where you researched everything and used that as a reference to tell me which technologies were worth it.

It is.

I've finished the game...but have not finished the AAR covering the end of the game.

I think I have one more chapter left after this evening's release.

I'm much more of a story teller than a gameplay AAR kind of guy.

My other recently finished AAR (Last Mission) take place in a world inspired by a game of HoI I played nearly twenty years ago...and I only completed the AAR this spring.

Ah okay. I have been in the habit of typing up exactly what has been going on as it happens. Most likely, this is because I am both new to this game and to the game of typing on the forum.

Also, if I write notes, I cannot read my own handwriting.

Muddling Through the Darkest Hour Session 34 - October 9, 1940

One of the reasons I am still continuing with this game can be easily seen in the picture shown in the post above. Genoa is highlighted and is colored blue on the map. Sacre Bleu! The French captured Genoa. Right up to the Vichy event, I saw them capture more and more of Italy. Had I been thinking more clearly, then I could have shoved 20 Divisions or more on Mainland Italy while the bulk of the Italian force was stranded in Libya. Guess what we are doing in the next game!

Another thing I wish I did at the start was decide which Generals were going to become our next Generation - and let the Old Guard Generals retire. I actually consider this to be barely relevant, because it takes so long to pick up a level anyway.

I also need to start with a plan. In this specific case, a plan for the RN. Which ships will be an active part of which task force and what their roles will be. The smaller ships do not get quite so many specializations. Destroyers only get one upgrade. If the job of this Destroyer is to screen, then it's most likely Improved Hull. If they are part of the AA patrol, then AA, maybe. Anti-Sub Patrol, definitely. Float Planes? I have to check which parts are removeable.

This is yet another mulligan run. I mean. I hit quit by accident instead of save and that was a good thing because less than ideal results happened. The AI kind of knows where your crap is and we get back on even footing when we save games and load as them or read save files.

We meant to finally start building Air Bases. So we can fix that issue. We can also move our Main Transport Fleet out of harm's way, now that they dropped off our troops into Libya and we have a beachhead.

What event activates those Garrisons we have, such as the one in Malta?

News from the Front:
September 1, 1940 - There is a hot battle going on in Egypt right as we speak. Desert combat is gimped because we don't have the right gear. Neither do the Italians. So it is gimped on both sides. Battles just take longer.

September 2, 1940 - Yugoslavia had a Coup d'Etat and the new government left the Axis. The phony war we had with them ended. They are now Social Conservative.
September 3, 1940 - Germany plans their revenge against Yugoslavia.
September 5, 1940 - The Vienna Dictate. Romania folded. They also had a Coup d'Etat and are Fascist.

September 11, 1940 - Italians recaptured Benghazi, but we did our damage.
September 14, 1940 - USSR annexed Lithuania.
September 16, 1940 - Italians managed to recapture Tunis. They still have a Transport they are willing to risk.
September 20, 1940 - We recaptured Tunis. Rinse and repeat.
September 21, 1940 - Italians took out Hargeisa.

September 22, 1940 - Bulgaria claimed Dorbich from Romania.
This day marks the beginning of the Free French movement. We shall soon see what they will accomplish
1752718424138.png

September 25, 1940 - Germany declared war on Yugoslavia.
Free France gained French Equatorial Africa.
September 27, 1940 - Captured Sidi Barrani, but decided to retreat rather than stay. The distraction was enough.
September 28, 1940 - We captured Tobruk and we might have picked off all those Italian Naval Bombers. Unfortunately, they did a lot of damage to our Battleship fleet and it will be a lot of time repairing. Italy appears to be down to 1 Tactical and 1 Naval Bomber.
1752720573370.png

Now how to rescue our 51st Highland Division is another story. It appears we do not have a port.
September 29, 1940 - Captured Kasserine. Those appear to be the mountains in Western Algeria.
October 1, 1940 - Germany declared war on Yugoslavia. Bulgaria joined the Axis.
October 2, 1940 - Romania joined the Axis.

October 9, 1940 - Sub-Saharan Africa joined Free France.
