You mean in a music player, that is an alternative.

Drivers downloaded and installed, thanks for finding them. :) Well on the plus side I played 2 hours of CK today and the music kept going all the time without problem, on the minus I experienced my first crash with 1.3b; previously the game had been as stable as a very stable thing.

If the music cuts out again in the future I'll be back, but otherwise I think we can assume the problem is fixed :holds lucky rabbit's foot:

Actually it might be better than before :)

Well as long as everyone is happy. :D

Sorry to say I played for a quick 20 minutes this evening and the music vanished again, the sound effects and everything else kept going same as usual. I thought I'd cracked it, 2 hours is the longest I've ever played :(

Okay try turning down the sound acceleration. You can do that from the Dxdiag sound tab screen.

Tried it; anything less than the third notch from the left causes sound effects glitches, however the music seems fine. I didn't stick around long enough to find if the music kept playing or not, those glitches were ear hurting.

:)

So there is a chance the 3rd notch may work?

Sorry, I should have said - third notch is what I leave it on all the time, forth notch causes performance problems in some games. I'm trying to do too many things at the same time

So you are having trouble with other games as well?

Medieval total war, if I have the sound accel to full then the battles are very jerky; it is a known and common issue with the game. It has never been isolated to something as simple as drivers etc, it appears to be a part of the battle engine. Aside from CK's vanishing music and thief 3's hatred of newer radeon drivers everything is running fine.

Try the forth Notch with CK.

Sorry for the delay, I haven't had time to play for ages. I tried the forth notch today, the game crashed once after 15 minutes. On my second go the music disappeared after about 20 minutes; sound effects etc were all fine as usual.

Who is the publisher of your version, thier logo will be on the cd?

Also go to Start-Run- then type Msconfig.
Tell me what is listed under the start up tab.

I got mine direct from Paradox so it is their logo on both disc and box.

Enabled at start up:
atiptaxx
GSICON
dslagent
remhelp
hpztsb05
navapw32
realsched
zlclient
CTHELPER
UpdReg
ADGJDet
Microsoft Office
PowerReg scheduler V3

There are more things I have disabled:
qttask
msmsgs
NeroCheck
qttask (listed twice, disabled twice)
BT Broadband Help
Getright Tray Icon
WinZip quick pick

Just a side note:

You can disable the PowerReg Scheduler V3, I know that...

That is the program that gets installed and pops up after you buy a game or program and asks if you want to register it or wait two weeks for a reminder.

Castellon,

I think you should add this to the pages people should check when they are looking to fix problems:

http://www.windowsstartup.com/wso/browse.php?l=0

I recommend you look up all the things that load up at startup and reference them against the list so you know what they are.

CTHELPER

CTHELPER is a background task that is a plug-in manager for Creative drivers. The theory is that 3rd party manufacturers can use the CTHELPER plug-in interface to produce drivers, add-on features, and fixes that will integrate with a tighter fit with Creative抯 sound drivers and utilities. Given its purpose CTHELPER would normally be classified as a "leave alone" background task.Unfortunately there are often problems with CTHELPER, most notably that it can use 100% of CPU time so it's best left disabled

Perhaps you should try disabling it for a test to see if the music disappears while playing...

Judge, do you also have this file loading at startup?

M

Actually what I want you to do is disable ALL of them.
You should not need any of them.
When I mentioned shutting down all background programs these are what I was talking about.
Normally I have two things I allow to start up automatically, that is the MSOffice and a Quick loader.

If you don't mind I will keep some of those processes running - otherwise I lose my antivirus and firewall; since I have a broadband connection I usually leave the connection open.

Anyway as a brief experiment I yanked the Internet connection out of the wall and disabled everything; it didn't help CK at all. I have put things back how they were now.

This is one strange problem; I'm beginning to think it will be easier to keep exiting and restarting CK each time the music breaks. I did try using media player to supply the music back when CK was on version 1.1, it worked but badly; every time the track changed CK started to flicker and media player showed through.

You could try WinAmp.

Virus protection in the background is one of the leading causes of problems. ;)

The choice is yours.
