Hallo,

i try to explain my problem with the mission. It is the third mission after the 2 tutorials in the campaign, where i must find the submarines and destroy it in 3hours. I find 2 submarines and i cann kill one of them but then i my sub didnt attack the second sub, i can follow the sub by 2 meters but nothing happend( i set Fire on all clear targets). Then i sent some helicopters to the sub but nothing happend, they stay on patrol...i click to attack the enemy sub but the helicopter follow their way i ordered them before. I shoot Torpedos manually from the sub and the heliocpter but they dont hit the target. What i do wrong?? Im not the Naval Specialist and i hope you can help me. Sorry for my bad English...long time ago that i write it.

Thanks for help.

Hitting subs are supposed to be hard, especially if he lays on deep water. Send some more sonobuoys down to it and make sure you send every thinkable unit towards it. Also make sure you have enough USW ammo on the units.

Good luck. :)

Hey..i am stuck on this mission as well..i cant seem to find the second sub...when i am trying to deploy the sonar thingy's..time goes up...any idea what am i doing wrong???

first enemy sub is near mine, so easy to find and kill,, second one i presume is upnorth near the gap between those 2 island..but time is up when i am deploying sub detection.. what am i doing wrong here...

The map marker is where it's at in the start of the mission. If you try to sneak the second P8 up there, maybe go very low, and spread sonobuoys from the mark and southwards, you should find it. Try to have some fighter cover, because the darned Beriev sees the P8.

Just in case, Launch the ASW fixed wing you have at the start of the mission so they can take over.

I launched pretty much all of the ASW assets I had in this mission. Split your forces up in 2 groups and send each to a marker. Start dropping Sonobuoys like nuts and you'll find the subs. I had 1-2 P8s and 1-3 helicopters at each marker.

I always engage subs from 3 different directions. Since the torpedoes only have a range of 4 miles they can easily be outrun. So if the sub is going north attack from the north, south (his logical escape route) and east or west. Your helicopter are way faster than the sub so use that to cover its escape.

Good luck!

one of the main issue i am facing is with the detection of enemy fighters..i have my own fighters in the air but for some reason enemy fighters shoot down my posidon..what i find really annoying is that those enemy fighters are within the patrol zone of my own interceptors and i got there radars switched on...still they manage to kill while i cant even detect them..

btw what is an ASW???

The units that can shoot down sub's is called ASW(Anti-submarine warfare). You can see it last in their names and the planes interface at your airfields.

This mission is incredibly frustrating. I've spent two evenings failing it. Last night was my best attempt so far. I sunk the southern Killo II, using 8 of one of the Poseidon's 11 torps (stupid plane firing torps from six km behind a sub going 65 knots). I also managed to locate the two northern subs (I think). The problem was that they remained unidentified, so my forces didn't engage. Even had they immediately been identified as being hostile I don't think I would have had the time to kill them.

You need some luck to locate the northern subs.
You need some luck to hit a hostile sub with torps (can be improved by direct micromanagement).
You need what, to determine that the northern subs are hostile? Luck? Or do you just designate them as hostile and start shooting?
You have a three hour time limit.

There are too many dice rolls here for my liking. I'll give it a go tomorrow night, but as an old-school Harpoon player it feels like this game, or at least this scenario, is forcing me into arbitrary situations where my success is dependent on luck rather than judgement. Some luck (/randomness) is fine, but....

At least take out the time limit :).

Yes, that's why I said "Or do you just designate them as hostile and start shooting?". That is not me "identifying them as hostile", it's me saying "I think they're hostile, so I think you can shoot at them".

Ok, I've played through it a few times now. I send one P8 to deal with the closest sub, one to deal with one of the northern (marker closest to task force) subs, as I launch Orions just in case the P8s die. I send fighters as far north as they will go, but I do not engage any aircraft if I can avoid it.

I saturate the marker with sonobuoys as soon as I can. I pick up the southern sub first, killed it after a bit of a hassle (see playthrough video for that part). I will then still have time to send the first P8 north. About this time I usually get a detection of the second sub and start trying to kill it just as the Russians start showing up with fighters. I manage to kill the sub in time.

First off, thanks to the devs for taking such an active part in the community here, that's good to see :).

JanH, re the northern subs, did you "self-designate" them as hostile, or did your sensor information allow you to determine that they were Ruskie sub X because you gethered enough data to match it against patterns held on a notional in-game database somewhere (this is how I would expect it play, much as in Harpoon you knew a sub was somewhere, then you knew it was a Russian sub, then you knew it was a Tango etc).

A note on the Orions. iirc Orion from the southern base has just enough fuel range to drop one torp on the western sub (without mid-air refuelling support) before it goes bingo and has to return home. If you give it refuelling support that's less to support your air assets further north. And helos can't get to the southern sub from the QE carrier group.

Your air war sounds a lot less aggressive than mine, though perhaps because I always try to take out the Russian AWACS floating around in the north. I always end up in a tussle with T-50s and occasionally Mig 29s. Though normally, by the time the 29s show up, the scenario is about to run out of time...
