Good Start Point

I just got the game and was wondering where would be a good place to get the hang of the game and its mechanics?

I would recommend the duchy of Flanders; it has a large fertile familiy, rich provinces, a not so powerful liege and a couple of vassals: Really entertaining game with lots of possibilities

Would playing as Gisulf of Salerno be horribly difficult if I already have the hang of the basics of the game? I played my first game as Apulia for a while, lots of bad happenings like my bastard non heir killing the rightful heir, going to original dukes brother, his son being an idiot and having a decade long fight with all my vassals, becoming king of Sicily. Just thought it'd be cool to play a more difficult path to power without having a liege still.

That would be a very good and interesting choice

Well having a liege can add another dimension; being more protected, but also more restricted, so sometimes that requires patience. OTOH being an independent small count can be trick too, especially with more powerful neighbors; if the Italo-Normans stay united enough, they might also want to gain your county too. However Salerno is a good choice :).

In short each tier and being a vassal or not, can add something different. And each player, mostly for role playing purposes or just an extra challenge, can also add extra personal rules.

How about the kingdom of Leon in Spain? The King Alfonso has a high intrigue score, by getting a wife with also a high intrigue score, he can assasinate the king of castille, duke of galicia and king of aragon all in one sweep and have half of spain under him in 3 months:D I tried with him and become king of leon, castille, aragon, navarre before he turns 40 :D and by the time he died i added king of mauritania, africa and egypt. Great place to start coz alot of muslim kingdoms next to leon and castille.

mine would be apulia to get into the concept of conquering and creating kingdoms or Sweden(since this is a paradox game would expect it to be easier lol) which'll get you into the concept of taking claims and expanding against a weak non religious group(s)

It is a fun thing to do, at least once. Marry Alfonso to Agnes of Aquitaine, make her a vassal duchess, then when she inherits she brings three French duchies with her (Occitan actually...).

Hello, i started playing today. This is actually the 3rd time i install the game but the other 2 times i found it too confusing and quit :p
Now im having a blast, following advices on this thread i picked one of the irish counties, the one at the north east part with a yellow shield.
I got some questions though:
1)What are fosterlings actually for? Once they grow do i keep them in my court?
2) What improvements should i get? So far i got the forestry and fishing hut.
3) I got 2 friends, and 1 enemy, what are they actually for?
4) I had a claim on a title, which i took, but i got a notification saying my count only can control 1 demnse correctly. Should i grant the other county to one of my family members.
5) How does the classes loyalty work? (Peasants, knights, etc?)

Well that is all i think. Thanks.

1. fosterlings are the children other nobles give you to raise. they don't do much, but they might build relationships within your court that might be.... fateful... in the future. or not.
2. get them all. money stuff is probably most important. don't bother with churches or stuff like that. more money=more power. save up to get castles on your key provinces.
3. it impacts relationships. enemies hate you. friends like you. mostly important for vassal-liege relationships, but can trigger certain events.
4. not if you are a count. if you do this, you will lose the province to the new count you created. otoh, if the province sucks, why not? if you have an heir in your court, that's the best person to give it to - when you die, he gets your current province and you play as him.
5. it determines who revolts and who doesn't. you need to keep all 4 classes happy or one of them will revolt. power doesn't impact loyalty though, so if you want to squeeze the nobles out and give all the power to the church, it won't make the nobility more or less likely to revolt. different technologies and buildings impact loyalty of different classes.

Thanks for answering! Btw, sadly my game went down the toilet. All of ireland island joined kingdom of scotland, and also i only had daugthers, no boys sadly. I couldt expand, and then my character died and it was game over :(
Nice for a first playthrough though!

here's a trick - don't use semi-salic laws. i personally always play salic primogeniture.

that way, a male HAS to inherit.

even if no men are left in the dynasty, at your death, the game generates a "country cousin" who has the same last name. yes, he's got crappy stats, but you stay in the game.

Yeah i forgot i can change the succession laws, but i chose the one that allows inheritance to go through females too. Should i change it?Still most of ireland island is part of scotland now.

YES!

don't let some woman determine your succession!

also, here's the thing - you'll never have more fun playing this game than when everything goes horribly wrong. so, yeah, you lost most of ireland to those bastard scots.

well, one of these days they'll piss of the King of Denmark/Aragon/Syria and you go in and show them what's what.

There's a LOT of time to sharpen your daggers for the counter strike.
