I've got to say reading this had really made me eager to start up an Imperator AAR. The trouble is narrowing it down to one choice!
This! I am reading the AARs here and it is definitely sparking an interest, just who to go for... Also, very much enjoying the different styles people are taking with their stories. Having only got one AAR under my belt, I am enjoying looking at how different people are shaping their own versions.

Count me as another who's keeping an eye on the AARs as a bellwether while I contemplate whether to get this game. System issues are a big worry for me, too -- I'm concerned whether my old laptop can run such a new game decently -- but seeing how other "old hands" take to the game and hearing their remarks is definitely going to influence my choice.

Also, glad to see you're keeping the writing up, @stnylan :)

Just discovered this! :) Good show, my friend. I can start looking at the new game through someone else's eyes while I still toil away with the old one. ;)

PS: is it just me, or are the helpful/agree/etc buttons not coming up on this thread?

I've noticed it too, it seems to be specifically the (Imperator) AAR fora by the looks of it, I noticed it too recently.

I’d have clicked ‘helpful’ but couldn’t! :D

I'd have rated agree if I could too :p. Just had a quick look, the general game fora and the other AAR fora are ok, it seems to be specifically the Imperator AAR fora that for some reason has no agree/disagree/helpful button.

Yes, I did the same and found the same. To whom and how are these things reported, does anyone know?

Understood and thanks for the heads up. :)

There are certainly plenty of options

I'm looking forward to reading more about your Olbian adventures.
Thank you

As the saying goes, there is more than one way to skin a cat

I can't speak to performance issues. But in terms of the game itself I have so far thoroughly enjoyed myself.

You are right. Perhaps @Mr. Capiatlist can enlighten us about those buttons.

So much delayed here is the next update. I actually played this on the 26th - 1½ weeks ago - so memory is a bit hazy and my screenshots are, as per typical, somewhat lacking.

We start off in 470 with our first ruler getting back into office.

Then I suddenly get a message about barbarians reducing my civilisation value by 10%. It turns out that Barbarians have sieged down Olbia, and I was entirely ignorant as I was looking elsewhere and didn't get a message about it.

Cursing the default messages I pause the game and muck around with the message settings, and then send my army to march north from Chersonesus to Olbia. They catch the barbarians on the way and crush them - and I end up getting a slave out of the bargain. All in all not bad, and disaster averted.

I wait a few more years, and then decide it is time to attack the Bosphoran Kingdom. This time I have the support of the Senate, and declare war with no additional tyranny. Honestly I have very little to say of the actual war. Part of that is memory, but also because there was not, in all honesty, much contest. I ambused a couple of regiments early on. My new fleet (I had built a fleet of six ships) crushed their fleet. Their subject - Heniochia - was non-contiguous and unable to intervene. In the end I seized the province of Taurica - leaving the Bosphoran Kingdom a small poor strip of land in Maeotia (along the coast of the modern-day Sea of Azov). I also took gold and cut Heniochia free.

In the peace I start to get a few technological advances. A new ruler comes along. I also get gifts from Paphlagonia and the Sarmatian revolt - all very nice I am must admit I am unsure of their motivations. A wee bit later - whilst they are being attacked by Scythia - the Bosphoran Kingdom also gives me a gift, which does cause me to contemplate the AI logic a little.

I end the session in 480 with another new ruler and my second Greek Military tradition.

Along the way I have decided to shift my slaves around. Rightly or wrongly I have ensured I now have one slave pop in every province, and otherwise I am now concentrating remaining slave pops in either Olbia or the provincial capital of Taurica. The idea here is to (a) increase the chances of a slave pop growing, by having slave pops in all my cities; and then (b) getting a province to whatever number of slave pops it is (15?) to generate an extra trade good. Or that's my theory anyway.

And with that, I may actually now play some more, presuming my game works under 1.01.

I do have to wonder if maybe they were attempting to butter you up for an (undoubtedly futile) attempt at securing an alliance against the Scythians. It does seem to be a remarkably quick about-face, of course...

IIRC, you get an additional goods produced in a city per 5 additional slaves, so that might be a worthy goal?

stnylan rampaging in the Crimea, Black Sea, and eastern Ukraine.

Someone might be contacting you for strategy plans! :p

That was unlucky with the barbarians. I remember from EU: Rome how much of a nuisance they can be, though on the bright side defeating them can be lucrative as you've discovered!

I’m rather shocked the game didn’t scream ‘BARBARIANS!!’ at the top of its voice as soon as they appeared on the horizon.;) It’s a tradition. Much of what you’re reporting does sound reasonably similar to EU Rome with Vae Victis, though I’m sure other things have changed. At least you don’t have to deal with Pyrrhus in charge of the Pontic Army! :D And have they done away with visible die rolls for the battles?

I mean that is my thought as well, but I think the AI reasoning behind it could clearly do with some work. I mean, given I had a harmonious relationship with the Scythians and I had just taken the heart of their territory.

Is it just 5? Well, whatever it is I am sure I will discovery ti.

These nasty slaves, always such troubles with deciding when to place them!
Hehe.

Point of Order - it is Taurica, the Euxine, and Scythia (or perhaps Sarmatia). I know now of what is this Crimea of which you speak :D

Well it wasn't that they arrived, but that the default message settings didn't announce their arrival.

Oh no you still get dice rolls, though I believe they are just 1-6. And yes, no Pyrrhus for me :D

All
Hoping to get another episode or two out this weekend.
