Started a new game the other day. Pretty much default settings except 0.5 hab planets. But by 2280 I frequently had massive slowdowns. Didn't seem to be consistent though - restarting game would often fix it, just not for that long. Rather frustrating. Anyone else seen this? (On Mac btw). Even without that performance was barely tolerable.

Given that 2.7 seems to have no new performance improvements, outlook doesn't feel that hopeful.

I have a game I started in 2.6.3 that I've been playing for about a week, and I'm definitely noticing a slowdown in mid-to-late-game after updating to 2.7.1.
From the patch notes:
We have discovered and are aware of a performance hit in 2.7.1, and we are currently working on getting it fixed. So if you notice a slight dip, don't worry about it. We have our best people on it ;)

So performance in 2.6.x was still abysmal by normal game standards, but people accepted it because it was a marked improvement on the unplayable performance we experienced prior. Here we are again in 2.7 with worse performance than ever. Let's see if it's fixed promptly.

How is it that any patch goes live which negatively impacts performance when performance is the single biggest problem in this game?

I actually found the performance of 2.6.x to be a huge improvement over the previous versions, I can actually play a game into the late game now without it turning into a real time game!

However 2.7.1 reversed all of these gains. Like klc123, I'd like to know just how the hell this ever was released as its clear as day no-one tested late game performance. I appreciate the whole C19 situation probably isn't helping, but surely you are still testing releases?

With this and the infinite money market bug, they are two examples of bugs that should be have been caught before it was released. There was no public 2.7.x beta, perhaps that is a rule that you implement - release a public beta before each release so that people who want to test a new release can do so ridiculous bugs like this get caught before they're released.

If a new release adds something that you want to keep a surprise, run a closed beta, I'm sure there wouldn't be a shortage of volunteers to beta test - myself included. As a professional software dev myself, I pride myself on testing and finding bugs.

In fact I reported a crash to desktop with a reproducible steps & save file, but the forum crash wiped it and I no longer have the save :/
Another example of a fundamental mistake - not taking a backup before an upgrade, but that's another story.

I'm sorry if I come over as overly harsh, but as a professional developer, I expect a professional company like Paradox to get the basics right.

I did have problems with the Colony Screen in 2.6.x being very slow (~4 FPS), but the performance outside of this screen was reasonably good otherwise for my old machine. It is however significantly slower by several factors in 2.7.x (~10 seconds per day as opposed to 2 seconds per day). I thought this could be due to me loading a 2.6.x game in 2.7.1 so was going to try starting again, but perhaps it is worth making a mention if it isn't expected.

Still, I get the same massive slowdown when switching to the colony screen, where scrolling to pick buildings is a slideshow (pausing makes no difference to performance), so not sure what is happening there, since as soon as I leave the colony screen the framerate shoots back up.

EDIT: I just attached the save game in question (2.6.x game, I built lots of habitats but they seem blacked out in 2.7.1).

Yeah, Stellaris asked me on Twitter if I was loading a 2.6.3 game, it may be related to loading a save game, although others have reported it from day 1 on a new game in 2.7.1, so not sure if it is related to loading a save game. Seeing as I doubt anyone has a new 2.7.1 game in the late game stage yet, we may not know for a few days.

But like you, I have seen speed issues around the colony screen and the transfer pops screen when it first pops up (sorry, unintended pun), I just put it down to my processing planet having about 800 pops! (I'm cleansing the galaxy of organic filth at the moment!)

Yeah same for me, my save game is totally unplayable now in 2.7 where it was running fine before!

Yeah. Went from "normal" speed on normal to 10-15 seconds per day. The game isn't playable until this gets fixed.

I'm willing to forgive the colony screen slowdown, though I do question why its so much slower then the species screen.

The only solution I found was to switch to the Beta branch and use 2.6.3. It loaded my 2.7.1 save without issue, fwiw. For those who don't know, right click the game in steam, select properties. Switch to the Beta tab and select 2.6.3 from the drop down.

I've added a suggestion in the erm, suggestions forum that Paradox ensure the previous release is always available in the beta channel so we can easily roll back if there are issues. If they released a beta of all releases, this would always be there anyway..... (and this issue would have been caught...)

The problem is for those of us who use mods, we don't always have old versions to roll back to once they've been updated.

To me, this stinks of management saying "Get the damn patch out for the anniversary". There's no way that problem wasn't observed during testing.

My performance issues actually start from year 2208...in the early beginning playing synthetics on medium galaxy...so the game is clearly not playable in this build. Stuttering and freeze even with game on pause with main menu options the hovering of mouse freezes over the options?!?

To be honest, Mods are always going to be an issue when new versions are released, unless there is a beta, there's no way that a mod author can test it before it comes out and fix any issues ahead of time.

Its why I get a bit annoyed when I see bugs being logged when people have mods installed. You're wasting the Dev's time investigating a bug that is almost certainly caused by a mod, in reality you're more likely the bug won't be investigated at all because they'd have to install all the same mods before they could test it.

Personally, if I had mods installed, I'd stick with the same release until a) they had all been updated to support the new version or b) I tested a beta of the new release so I could roll back to the previous version if they didn't work. If mods automatically update (I've never used them, so I don't know how they update), then yes, the update system probably needs to take into account versioning when you rollback to an earlier game version too.

Anyway, this is getting off topic. Mods are good, but from a game dev's point of view, they do cloud game issues as its probably down to a mod rather than the core game.

Clearly however, this isn't the problem with the performance bug we've got in 2.7.1
