Trying to defeat my firewall might require some rather detailed information about the networking protocol at work here. I'm beginning to suspect Microsoft DirectPlay. Also, ports would be very nice indeedy.

Thanks,

John

Hmmm apparently it might use directplay. Bad choice! Easy to implement by Paradox perhaps, but absolutely HATED by every firewall in the world. There are so much more compatible alternatives, it makes me sick Johan that you had to use Microsoft's :(

Great GAME! Bad Microsoft!!!! Evil Firewall!

John

Umm.. Do you have control over your firewall?

Probably the easiest solution is to turn it off.

Failing that, put up a net-snooper and open the ports it uses.

Failing that, put up a net-snooper, look at the game's packet headers and set your firewall to filter for that and ignore them.

What firewall do you use? I might be able to give a more specific suggestion.

University of Washington firewall. If you have any clout with that Internet2-bandwidth capable firewall, let me know :) I don't suspect you have sway with God almighty, do you? Didn't think so. So I'm dependent upon Paradox making their netcode more firewall friendly. UT works fine, always has. Quake III works fine, always has. Lots of games are just fine with our firewall, but anything that uses Microsoft Directplay is near-toast. It chooses random ports and some of those ports may be blocked. Very, very frequently, they are. Just ask Maldrake from Brasil whom you've played before :) He's experienced trying to connect to my computer. Interestingly, on Sunday, we had about an 80% success rate (meaning, clicking on join actually joined my game 80% of the time). Monday, our luck ran out, and FINALLY after about 20 tries, it finally worked. So this seems interesting . . . . and fairly contradictory to how I understand DirectPlay:

ports 2300-2400 (one of those chosen randomly at session startup), and port 47624.

I have had the same problems looks like it uses diffrent ports each time. I have solved the problem by setting my IP to the DMZ while I play the game, but then you must be the administrator of your router/firewall. It´s a shame they didn´t use one or more set ports. Maby they choosen this solution for security reasons, but in the same time creating lots of problems for the users. I had a look at my router log and observations looks about right JohnMK about ports 2300-2400 and 47624.
Think Paradox should have provided information about this in the manual thought or atleast post it the forum or on their web page. Maby they have to many bugs and problems as it is right now regarding the MP support of their games. Hope they get better at his in the future.

The other solution is to not use DirectPlay, I guess. Here's what my University tells me:

> How come you don't block Quake III, UT, etc., the way you block

The aforementioned games use UDP. Due to the nature of the UDP protocol,
it is not possible for us to filter out UDP packets without affecting
legitimate network usage.

This does not mean that it's ok to run these servers. When we are
notified that these gaming servers are active, we take appropriate
measures.

Please understand that as far as C&C is concerned, the filters are doing
the job they are intended to do, which is provide some technical means to
help enforcement of the AUP. They are not a full enforcement mechanism,
as such a mechanism would interfere too much with legitimate traffic.
