Yes that is what I'm saying. Their is some kind of conflict. I could only boot in safe-mode and every time I tried to boot normally, I received an error-message "Windows-protectionerror". Their was no way around reinstallation the OS.

My post last night was the first in this forum, because I visited this place in order to find a solution to my problem.

As jpd points out above, it is possible that certain combinations of hardware and software trigger these conflicts. Which again could explain why you haven't experienced any problems on a Win ME based system.

However I might have found an easy solution. After reading jpd's enligthning posts last night, I tried a short-cut: According to jpd, the three files that jpd mentions oleaut32.dll, olepro32.dll and msvbvm60.dll are the ones that cause the conflict. During installation of EU2 these files are altered in a way, that in some rare cases causes these boot problems.
The short-cut was: Before installing EU2 I tried to make the 3 files write-protected, so that EU2 couldn't make any changes to the files. After installation but before running the game I booted and removed the write-protection. I have just been able to play EU2 for the first time.

I don't know if I have to write-protect the files before I run the EU-settings program? Does that program interfere with the files? Not to keen on reinstalling Windows Me again...

Anyway! Thanks for explaining the problem jpd.

Glad to be of help, and it's great that you are finally up and running. As to your question: No. You can safely use the settings program. Only the installer tries to replace these .DLL files when it really shouldn't.

Ah! that does explain a lot since I have a different publisher version from you as well, and the publisher write thier own installer programs.

Did you play any other DirectX games, or was it just regular stuff (like Word) that you used until now? In other words, should we be hunting the elusive problem inside DirectX or the EU2 installation.

Jan Peter

I played loads of other games - Wheel of Time, Civilisation III, Empire Earth.. surely there's one with DirectX in there...

Anyway.. if it IS those DLL's - how come the problem doesn't surface the first time I try to reboot?
I can survive without playing EU2 on this PC, but, well, when it does work, its a breeze compared to EU2 on my other PC..

yet another update:

EU2 was NOT installed, unless it has some way to install itself at night, while the disk is in the box and the PC was shut down, yet the computer did it's "I don't wanna boot" routine.

Making it HIGHLY unlikely that EU2 causes the crash..

well, you never know, paradox CD's are known for their sneakyness...:D

Well I did think it very unlikely that EU2 would be the cause. ;)
