Ok, so I noticed that the demo only has one start date and the clans that are in the demo campaign are so far from what I'm accustomed to seeing that I had to double check the actual dates of the Sengoku.

So my question is - Will the final release have more than one start date ala EU, CK, etc?

I'd hate to see the game come out without the opportunity to start at the height of the era, namely beginning in 1560 where Nobunaga Oda pulls off his genious victory at Okehazama and truly begins the meaningful unification efforts for Japan.

Don't put too much importance on 1560 or on Nobunaga. He wasn't the first; he's just the one who was the most successful.

Aw wat, I thought we could start at any date in sengoku period!?
Nope, they've said there's only the one.

The amount of effort necessary to do the same level of detail for the entire period would be staggering... imagine having to trace and create characters for every significant noble in Germany for 150 years :excl:

Plus the added burden of basically all sources being in Japanese - a language none of us at Paradox speak. But if Sengoku sells good enough there's always the potential of an expansion/dlc which might cover more start dates.

For less than the $20 it'd cost for a copy of Nobunaga's Ambition anyone with a ps2 could have done that research for you. Nobunaga's Ambition already has all of that information in it...

Nevermind the fact that the sheer number of clans in existence at Nobunaga's time vs the current start period makes for a much, much more interesting play experience.

*sigh* Alright, anybody else on board for the first Sengoku mod? Looks like it has to be done. Contact me via pm if you're interested, I have a few thoughts in mind.

Some date pre Sengoku-jidai, for example the war between the Taira and Minamoto in 1180' or the restoration of Godaigo in 1330' would be also interesting choices for this engine.

I doubt it would be that easy, considering the painstaking effort that went into our current setup. But I leave that to our Japanese research betas to answer.

Well, you can't just take someone else's research at face value, although you can use it as a starting point. If Sengoku does well enough, I'm sure that there will be an expansion and 1560 will at least be considered for an alternative starting date.

there is one source of sengoku era data.. start date 1550, 434 clans, 684 castles, 3567 characters... >.>

just needs a lot of work translating character names...

also it feels like stealing all this huge database...

That's largely up to an individual's personal tastes. Personally, I'm getting tired of games that center around the mid/late Sengoku (Unless, of course, one is playing "NobuNYAga no Yabou") and I find the current set up and time period of Sengoku to be a breath of fresh air. And there were more clans at the start of the Onin War than 1560 (due largely to the Shugo system and the competing Imperial governerships, which made more more small holdings as opposed to the larger daimyo of the mid/late sengoku).

If someone wants a real challenge, they could always try the Jinshin no Ran of 672.

Seconded!

I have been wanting to see the early Sengoku in a game for a while. Ever since I read Varley's Onin War book.

No need to buy the game... there are character databases available here.

NA isn't as detailed as Sengoku, though. They leave the parts of the map not held by a major clan as "unaligned". You can't do that here.

I have no idea what the hell this is, but I know that my fellow Paradoxian podcat will be thrilled :p

It's simply a scaled down online social game of "Nobunaga's Ambition" (also made by Koei), only the daimyo are played by cats. "Nyan-nyan" is how the Japanese notate "Meow", hence "NobuNYAga". Having cats or dogs substituting for historical figures is currently the rage in Japan, stemming from historical site mascots like Hikonyan.

戦国史FE, by any chance?

It has impressive depth, but I've noticed some errors in clan placement and who is and isn't independent (of course, those may have been intentional choices on the part of the designer).

If anyone could make a mod covering 672-1868, it would be amazig.
