Hallo,

I recently bought the German version of Crusader Kings. Unfortunately, I cannot play the game since it always crashes after about 10 to 15 minutes. Sometimes it does not even load completely before I see my Desktop again.

I run win2000 on a 733 PentiumIII with 392mb ram, riva tnt2pro - the system may be a little old, but it meets the requirements. I alreade updated directx, graphic drivers from nvidia, defragemented the harddisc, shut down all programms running in the background, renamed the avi-folder etc. The last thing I tried was a clean install with the actual patch - and it did not help either.

Is there anything I could do? The game seems really interesting and I would hate not being able to play it, besides the money I spent for nothing but sorrows....!

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

DirectX Test

Hallo again,

Thank you for the quick response. Today I tested the game on my Laptop-Computer - an older version of a Toshiba Satellite with win98. It ran OK for a while until it crashed too after two years of play. The only difference I encountered was that it was very slow - I guess because of the lack of ram. In my other system it runs perfectly OK - until it crashes.

I really hope you can help me. A friend of mine has the English version and he seams to have no problems - could it be a problem of the German version?

Greetings,

Marco

Well the answer is the VIA drivers you are using. They are known to be buggy. You may be able to switch to all WDM drivers.

Also is there no update for your sound card driver, the one you are using is 5 years old.

If I understand you correctly, I should update the drivers and then replace the VIA drivers with the standard Microsoft drivers. I did that. Unfortunately, the problem seems not to have vanished.

Could it be, that it is because of the sound card? Music sounds normal.

I'm sorry to bother you, but I am not sure, if I did it all correctly. If you know a quick standard proceedure to do the switch, please let me know.

Thank you,

Marco

Yes the Sound card could be the cause of the crash!
Update the driver if possible.
Let's try that and if it does not work you can run and post another Dxdiag.

Hallo again,

With some difficulties I succeeded updating my sound driver and replacing all the via drivers (even though they claim to be better than microsofts...). Unfortunately, I still face the crashes. Today I manage to play until 1069 though!

Here my new test results. I still hope the problem can be solved somehow.

Thanks for the help,

Marco

I have the exact same problem but with an english ver.

My setup:
P4 2.53
ASUS P4S8X
Radeon 9700 pro
512 MB RAM

And I am SURE my problem is not driver relatet .....
Please start your own thread and I will be happy to help you out.
The reason for your own thread is so I do not confuse the two issues that even though they sound the same may have totally different causes.

You obviously have something interfering with the game we just must hunt it down.
First thing is to make sure you have redone the standard things after you reinstalled.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.

Hallo Castellon
I re-checked all the points you indicated. I shut down all programms that would be allowed by win2k with the task manager incl. zonealarm, norton antivirus and disconected the network. As far as I can see, there were no more programs active than the system programs of win2k. I retried and faced the same crash as before - unfortunately.

Are there any other things I can check?

Well if that is an option for you, I am more fammiliar with XP so may be able to help more. The only problems for you is that I think there is no way around the VIA driver problem in XP.

You can just rename the music folder the same as you did with the AVI folder, Music_back.

Game finally runs

Hello Castellon

Now the game runs finally without any problems so far. I already reached the year 1100 without any crashes. You were right about the sound! Perhaps you should place the renaming of the sound folder-hint somewhere as a general hint. I am sure, that my case will not be the only one with that problem.

Thank you for your help and the great game,

Marco

Glad it worked out for you.

I don't see what this has to do with the subject of this thread, If you have a problem then you should start a new thread.
