I just bought Rome Gold (physical CD from Amazon, not download).
I installed it and even re-installed it but get a message that says:

"Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.

This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem"

Trying "Continue" does not work.

I did reinstall several times however this did not fix the problem and the game still will not start. I tried installing/reinstalling on a separate laptop - that did not work either.

I see from other posts with the same problem that information from DxDIALOG and Rome/settings.txt can help with diagnostics – they are posted below. There is no file called system.log in the Rome/logs folder.

Hope you can help, Thanks.

Your video driver is over 4 years old. Dell will certainly have an update for you, so apply that then re-install the game afresh.

Installed and re-installed but can't start up too !

it is the same case as above for me ...
could anyone tell me why ?

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Margunangelo, yours is not the same case at all. You have the JIT side-by-side issue, see the sticky thread on that topic.

vcst001, sorry I missed this last time. Edit your settings.txt and make refreshRate=60 and multisampling=0 . Then delete the contents of your rome/map/cache folder, and try again.

OK, uninstall the game completely, and manually delete the game directories. Then install it again but into a new directory like c:\games\rome . If it shows as version 2.0 then apply the 2.1 patch, if it shows 2.1 then that's fine as is. Now try the game.

OK, can we see your new settings.txt, system.log and errors.log files please?

Settings.txt and .log files

Settings.txt pasted below. NB I have tried it both with and without the changes you suggested in a previous post to refreshrate and multisampling; both before and after re-installing.

For system.log - is the file you mean the one in \windows\system32\config ? There are no files in the Rome game's subfolder called logs. I can't work out how to copy the \windows\system32\config\system.log file contents for you - trying to launch it gives an error "already in use".

errors.log - searching my c:\ drive fails to locate such a file.

No. In the Rome directory is a sub-directory calls LOGS, it is in there.

No files of any description in \logs subdirectory

Thanks for the clarification.
Sorry, but as posted previously there are no files at all in the C:\Program Files\EU Rome Gold\logs\ subdirectory. 'EU Rome Gold\' being my choice for the non-default folder of course.
I have checked this after most of the re-installs I have tried, whether installled to default subdirectory or one of my choice. Each time no files at all in that subdirectory, let alone any with .log extension.

Not good, I don't really know what's happening here. Maybe try editing settings.txt again and change master_volume=-1, which stops all sound. But the fact that the install and first run does not create the system.log file is very disturbing, I guess the game is failing before it even gets to that point. Try running the file romegame.exe in the rome directory, rather that rome.exe - this skips the launcher.

Do you have access to a different PC to try that CD on?

Fails to work on 2 other machines

Unfortunately trying RomeGame.exe just gives the error "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect."

Trying to install on 2 further machines (one desktop, one laptop) results in the same difficulties as on this machine.

vcst001, as best I can tell your CD is faulty. Hopefully you can get a replacement from Amazon or whoever you bought it from.

Matoska, please start your own fresh thread with full problem and system details, as you see me ask for in almost every thread here. Thanks.

Rome GOLD won't work but separate copy of Rome does

After all the disappointment of being told I had probably bought a dud CD and that there was no fix, I surprised myself by buying a separate copy of Rome (not Rome:Gold). The stand alone Rome runs fine on the same PC for which Rome:Gold would not.

So, either the Rome:Gold problem was a poorly pressed CD (solution: throw it away, sorry) or it is a problem with the way the combined installation of Rome+Vae Victis has been written.

Thanks - If I see Rome somewhere I may try it. I was going to buy Hearts of Iron III, but if Rome Gold is a sample of Paradox products, I think I will pass. I own and play many games. While my computer is not new, the performance of Rome Gold is inexcusable.

After reading all the problems on these threads, I think your last comment about Rome:Gold being a poorly pressed CD is probably the answer. For all the work, and regardless of how many have gotten it to work ok, there is little other explanantion. Blame the computers, blame the drivers all you want, when most all games run but this one doesn't, the logical answer is that it is a bad game.

Rome Gold installs but fails to start - might patch 2.2 be a solution

Does Tech Support have any thoughts as to whether it is worthwhile trying patch 2.2 to see if it solves the problem described in this thread? You must know what sort of problems the patch fixes.
