After constantly hearing everyone reminiscing about the 'good 'ol times' when everyone was an ace, it's funny to read something like this. Gives the impression that all the condescending from the oldies was more of nostalgia than actual superhuman wolf hunting skilezz.

Isn't it always? ;-)

Really, the game is in good shape right now. We have a decent stable of good and semi-good players, signups are fast, many people talk a lot, and everyone appears to be enjoying it.

AOK was better at vote analysis than anyone else. Nowadays he wouldn't be particularly good, but it was more the fact he invented it completely. Thistletooth was better at finding wolves from behaviour than anyone else who's ever played. Apart from that, though, there wasn't much difference, and most players were fairly crap. I don't really know what you'd be referring to, though. Has anyone ever actually said everybody was awesome in the old days, or was that just something you read into it? 'coz that's not something I've ever heard in my experience of werewolf.

I don't think anyone has said everyone was an ace in the old days, although I admit it's easy to sound like some kind of Werewolfing Geoff Boycott.

There definitely were more characters in the past.
Ironhead 5 with his very unique brand of play, Olaus Petrus (although not very good) was another.
Then you have AOK who was brilliant at analysis and even better at lying, Bash with his long walls of text (invariably wrong but entertaining) and a bunch of others.
There was a lot of RP too, but that isn't taking away from today's players.
We had noobs back in the day just as we do now, and good players the same.

Analysis worked then because 1) it was new and 2) only 2 players initially knew how to do it.
If AOK came back now and tried to do the same things as then it wouldn't work because the metagame is different.

It's more a question of if AOK invented vote analysis and noone actually did it prior, then an average newb today would have been one of the aces back then. This is not meant to be disrespectful as it's normal evolution, however we autolynch players today for asking their role, and call them noobs for outing early, when in fact back in the days wolves didn't even vote each other...

As for the superhuman hunting skills, it just comes out as such. Probably I also read into it a bit, but overall comments today are all about how cool this and that was. For new or relatively new players it does come down as condescending (doesn't bother me btw). The post was a response to your post actually Marty of how phrases were much more useful and not crap like it is today.

I reminisce a lot about my old days (although I'm not even that old a player) but what I tend to talk about is really the good games I played in, or interesting episodes.

I was exaggerating with my post, really it's just about the one word, alibi vote. And it's only a minor quibble, but I tend to write a lot about even minor quibbles and that tends to come across as if it's a big issue for me, when it isn't exactly. The other two examples I gave have been a problem for many years. :p

They didn't vote each other because there wasn't a need to. They did catch on pretty quick though ;)
Cody was a noob for outing as early as he did, it's better to get a day's voting mostly through to gather information from the other players first and then crack out the outing. What he did was deprive the village of a day's analysis of both player behaviour and votes.

It was good, they were fun games and I can't see how mentioning that is condescending.
Nobody's said it's all crap now, because it isn't.

I've actually said multiple times recently that this is a golden age of paradox werewolf we've been going through this year. It's the most promising batch of players in many years.

I agree, there aren't as many one sided games these days because generally the average player is more switched on than before.

If I may inquire, Jonti, is "laughter" being used in its verb or noun form?

Or maybe both?

It's been ages since I've won a Stalingrad. My first 7 wolf wins were all Stalingrads, the last 3 haven't been. :(

Staaaaalingraaaaaad

Remind me why we killed Panzer?

Why wouldn't you kill Panzer?
My vote on him, his vote on me...didn't exactly clear him, but it made him far less likely than Wagonlitz, Split, or Randy, and that's being generous if we're assuming your vote on me was clearing. Actually...did you kill Panzer? I thought Wagonlitz was lynched...? But anyway, Panzer shouldn't even have been in the conversation on that last day. It should have been between Wagon, Split and Randy.
