If both of them are above 16 Martial then I'm picking Italian no matter how much higher Komi's Martial is. To be frank I don't Martial value of Commanders much (it can be upgraded via Marshal anyway). If they have 12+ it is good enough. The idea is to breed my own commanders. But I made a mistake and mistook Italians with Scots - both have Pikemen boosting culture building and pikemen related cultural combat tactics. Will have to look for some Waldensian Scotsman to start the program.
Good to know. In past games I've aimed for highest available martial stat to boost whatever can be boosted (commander traits, Brave, etc.) the most. I'll try to pay attention to cultural tactics in the future. Not that it matters in my Byzantine game, though.

Scottish and Italian both look very good, you could try setting up commander breeding programs for both!
So I'll have to think about how much vassal limit do I want/need.
That is the question, indeed. I find myself wondering if I can even afford the last level or two of Centralization in my games.
Arbitrary kind of pushes you towards Rulership otherwise.
I guess. The next time Rulership ever gives me anything other than Stressed or Depressed will be the first, though. So far feasting for Just has worked in the first two or three years of each reign, though I don't have a lot of data for that (learned about that trick from this AAR, thank you! :D ).

I learned something about artifacts recently. The wiki explains "When a non-ruler dies, their artifacts are inherited by their employer". So occasionally browsing the character finder looking for landless characters with artifacts and inviting them to your court can be oddly valuable. Paying attention to notices in the log about big faction civil wars might help look for specific targets. I learned about this from offering a nice retirement in Constantinople to the ex-Crusader King of Aquitaine, Crusader Aquitaine, and Crusader Aquitaine, who had become Waldensian and got deposed by one of his sons. Now the Byzantine Emperor has four nice Crusade artifacts. o_O

Maybe you've long since acquired all the normal artifacts you can use, but I thought I'd mention it in case it's of some use.

I got Mjollnir this way (it's holder joined our court from his own accord). From what I remember the landless courtiers have 75% chance of passing artifacts (to make it 100% you need to land them and be their heir). I'm also quite certain that there is still plenty of artifacts to collect but at this point, beside books lowering construction costs I don't really care much. Some Christian artifacts could be nice though but last time I checked there weren't any in the world that we didn't had.

You got the holy grail and holy spear? Those are the two most powerful Christian ones that I know of, that also actually show up. Seamless robe of Jesus is also pretty good.

No I don't. Those are nice artifacts no doubt but both Holy Spear and Grail are not required for what I'm doing in this AAR. Seamless Robe of Jesus (as you mentioned) + Image of Edessa/Weeping Statues would be nice though. I keep looking for Robe but it got lost after that time we had opportunity to steal it in Monastics.

Part XLIX (1167-1176)

Part XLIX (1167-1176)

Year 1167
======================

So we restart our economic machinations with new part. As usual we fill court by sending invitations before starting playing (to have a stockpile of character at hand whenever we will need to replace someone) and start another assasination attempt - but not because someone is over the demense limit but will be in the future. More importantly we have almost 23.000 gold coins after continuing new "city town structure II" in our newest holding. So we continue building up - this time I decide to upgrade road infrastructure from Architect bloodline:
kTfC1zL.jpeg

We go on building frenzy and order construction of stone roads in every county we can. We also issue few unlocked Universities in eastern Siberia and some Monastic Schools. That drops us to just 7.549 gold coins as most Roads costed between 140-230g. In other words we started at once really ambitious infrastructure project x]

Soon 8 new (mostly Jewish) male and 2 female courtiers arrive. Our Steward makes everyone in Perm angry (failure at collecting taxes) and our favourite Muhallabid bachelor dies due to some plot. Ok - maybe making Marshal wasn't the best choice, as he draw the ire of other potential candidates. Still he generated 3 more male Muhallabids for us. But I just gave him new (4th) wife and had hopes for even more. Well with that at least all 5 possible targets for conversion are our Ashkenazi invitees.

April starts nicely as we get an occasion to visit nearby monastery (-30g for +30 piety). That puts us at 1.351 piety meaning 2 more years till we can target Muhallabid Syria. Between now and then most of our negative modifiers will time out so we should be able to raise more troops. We still have few more urgent piety needs (excommunicating older son) but we will probably manage it. For now we re-order Steward to Research Economic technology in Irgiz. It will ensure faster technology spread (province has only +60% from University 2). It's important to target slower at drawing tech provinces to make the most of time I think.

EqLQg5U.jpeg

I'm not sure if research rate is capped on 100%. Lets test it. Right now this province has Castle Inf. level 5. If it is capped it can't reach level 6 before year 1177.

By June we get another Jewish courtier - this time that character with high stewardship was generated by us :). Well he definetely will have plenty of company as we nabbed 5-6 such characters from foreign courts. Never have I've been feeling so great about owning "Sons of Abraham" DLC due to such triviality. And just as I speak about it on 4th of July one of Ashkenazis becomes Orthodox due to efforts of our Patriarch.

With passing of seasons change occurs also on throne of Ecumenical Patriarchate. Previously mediocre Patriarch Athanasios gets replaced by 30 years old Genius Michael. Well that will at least guarantee we won't suffer any maluses due to unskilled Religion head. Lately we were barely getting under max Moral Authority but new Ecumenical Patriarch once again put us at 100% MA. As we made potion of eudaimonia for our depressed Master-Engineer (which helped), he returned the favour by granting "Fireworks Guild" modifier in Pilva (+10% Levy Size, +25% Garrison Size, +1 Mil. Tech. Point and some prosperity points). It's nice to be able to brew that for other characters thus helping selected few live longer. Don't think we can constantly destress all of our super city vassals though (maybe with Carousing, which also would opinion proof us with friendships to abuse excommunications more). The sister of recently passed away Muhallabid at long last (after 9 years of marriage) becomes pregnant. Probably her getting "Unfaithful" nickname explains, why the change occured but hey - we don't care as long as those children will be of Muhallabid dynasty.

By November we are getting notification: some plot is going against us. I localise one that is close to getting enough plot power to press for kingdom of Perm title. First time in long time I ask our Spymaster to send demands to stop backing it to every identified schemer. Then as month changes our builders finish Komi University in Kudymkar. Right now we don't have enough cash to continue building with enough gold left to afford Prosperity event. But we will want to start upgrading it relatively soon, as I want several features (+attributes that stack and well Road Tolls for +5% tax).

twO6mGK.jpeg

Our 6th Wonder that makes every county in Capital duchy having one :).

Then our youngest son suggests another divine summoning. His father obviously concurs. We sacrifice 2 ingredients to start. During last part I did a little digging up to learn more about that event chain. Using ingredients lowers the probability of 2 bad outcomes a little. Having Scholar (good) or Mystic (better) lifestyle traits doesn't impact outcome, but makes event occurying more likely. So does being on Scholarship or Theology focuses and being "smart". So far Meltsayka was kind of unlucky not reaching critical successes.

Year 1168
======================

We start next year with 9.798 gold coins after our recent big spending spree. Some of those Stone Roads finished and we can upgrade them again right now. That won't be needed though - final levels of that building no longer provides extra income (just technology spread). Our wealthiest town in capital generates 150.58 gold coins every year (and has base income of 34.10, so it increases it with various bonuses over 4 (!) times). I'm also proven wrong by game, as we do receive another mission despite being society leader. Could have swore that I stopped getting missions once being top dog in Monastics. Well I will take it.

ARvoAmM.jpeg

We will embark on it because it may give us another chance at diligent.

Sadly our Divine summoning grants us only +1 Stewardship for 5 years. Well at least by middle February most of our tyranny penalties time out. Meltsayka commits to writing another theorem and collecting more ingredients. Sadly few days later our Chinese Scholar-Bureaucrat passes away at 56 years of age (thus outliving his collegue Master-Engineer with Cancer). Well that will sting a little as he still had Golden Age bonuses (-30% construction cost and time). Now we will replace him with just regular -15% discounts. Good thing I spent most of our available funds on those road building to further increase our income.

To my suprise we get Jain preachers event once more (thought it was only available for India/people with Jain provinces). I double checked and we have no Jain province (still have Tocharian culture). Not sure what the requirement for this event is:

RwHaefA.jpeg

Weirdly our option available due to high diplomacy upset Jains when each regular doesn't mention it. I'm always dissapointed how poorly "Rajas of India" aged.

Nothing follows that Jain situation. Weird that the tooltip was mentioning some trouble yet none happened. We let the time pass and as year enters it's second half we finally accumulate enough piety to launch Great Conquest War. So we do:

OQRhNEN.jpeg

Turns out we don't have to exactly make our enemy have 95% strenght at the moment. Sultan has far less than us thus we might be able to prosecute this war with just levies and retinues. Not gonna lie - this did suprise me. Was totally ready to keep disbanding our levies outside of borders to lower troop count.

We start marshalling troops with expectation, that it will take us up to next spring before all of our levies reach Burtasy. We will probably lose our county in Cilicia but we can easily retake it. And there is not zero chance that enemy moves to meet us. As we monitor movement of the troops our Patriarch converts newly arrived Han courtier and then at age 20 Prince Zhuneg of Nenetsia dies due to infection. So much for my big brain strategy. At least we can retrieve Princess Kanyava and marry her off again.

Year 1169
======================

Seems like waiting did pay off, as our Muhallabid foe did hire 8.000 mercenaries so now they have reached parity in numbers. And some of our vassal troops are still halfway through Siberia. If they decide to cross steppes towards Siberia, we will fight them with home ground advantage (and well AI will probably suffer tremendous losses during that travel).

By February after clicking through another stargazing, we get new friend thus fullfill our ambition to make a friend further improving our base Diplomacy by +1. With that we can pick the last ambition: "Become Paragon of Virtue". It might or might not happen. Not important. We send our spymaster to Armenia to grant ourself quite a vision, if the Sunni's are making the attack but we don't see them. Beside that we had to wait a little cause winter at the end becomes severe but luckily as I'm focusing now on this we avoided any attrition. Takes up to May for it to pass though.

Zgtivdd.jpeg

This is really nice. Getting free trait is somewhat I overlooked before embarking on that playthrough.

With summer nearing, we get to acquire Temperate from emulating the legend of Emperor Vokan "the Architect". This is really beneficial as not only it does increase our stewardship further but I also read that Temperate might lead to currying Gout. We still have Drunkard (and overall 8 traits) but I'm optimistic. Then to my suprise I spot this:

u6Ibhy8.jpeg

Almost forgot that they did it previously ;)? Well good thing we have troops back home and outnumber them tremendously.

We let them pilgrim towards our capital (as rest of our vassal troops are still coming in). In meantime we finish stargazing, succeed and name the newly discovered start after ourself (for that +1 diplomacy and Proud). Then we await as 5.000 Muhallabids lock onto Kudymkar to move with our 16.000 warriors located province to the south as well and force battle. Rest of our forces (12.000+ in Burtasy) begins moving towards Cilicia to relieve county besieged by 8.000 enemies. Heck - will throw 8.100 retinues from Perm as well so our side enjoys 5:1 advantage in numbers.

yTvHzI3.jpeg

Checked and those are Bektashi Order troops. Better than other Mercenaries but I would still prefer to slaughter regular levies. Seems they were too zealous as they sailed around Europe to B-line towards our capital.

Battle ends one-sidedly. We lose 127 men but kill over 2.300. It doesn't put a dent in enemy forces though. Our southern force thanks to having movement speed boosting commander (+40%) is reaching our lost county in Cilicia. We even get joined by Emperor's granddaughter Konstantia with 2.000 troops. That will be enough to give us chance against similar size (12.000 men) army that took over that province. We also start moving our other half of forces towards Burtasy. So far war is at -34% cause our granddaughter lost one battle and we lost 4 Cilician holdings.

Before end of year we get our first seclusion events from Theology. Such a great event and relatively quick. After a week we get to pick between losing Drunkard and 10% at diligent or +100 piety and 10% at diligent. We obviously remove Drunkard first. Not only it decreases amount of of traits but should also improve our health.

NidPlmw.jpeg

Another malus to Stewardship gone. Also now, if we would also heal from Gout would be fantastic.

Year 1170
======================

Meanwhile construction of 3rd stage of our Hagia Epimoni (our Grand Cathedral) ended. With that I no longer will have to click through that alert about "stopped great building construction". Uff :)

GzRqvRQ.jpeg

It did change a little graphically. Also the higest stage wonder in our realm right now.

Before February we have to do the whole deal with scrying again. This time we get the bad omen, so we give away county of Turgay to one of our landless commanders. Thus the vision modifier gets prolonged till 1177. That's enough time. For now I won't bother with trying to extract more counties for myself (currently at 8/13). That can await for "after the war". We do though occupy ourself with trying to fix the mayor that just died (start of February) by arranging marriage of one of Ashkenazis into his court and ordering assasination. Meanwhile our troops in Anatolia begin recapturing our county.

We fix city mess by March (without getting our plot revealed), notice remaining half of Bektashi order trying to get our capital again (our Permian retinues will deal with them) and then on April due to being over the trait limit (8/5 after losing drunkard) we lose Paranoid. It is quite rare to lose it, but during last part there was an instance where I made bunch of courtiers and vassals really unhappy due to bad events from Paranoid and Slothful. So now that we no longer are neither, things start to look up. Only drawback being it lowers our Intrigue that we use extensively.

As our main force passes Caucasia, by not paying attention we march right into 13.000 strong peasant rebelion. We deal with them with just 1.000 losses (where are my thanks Romans?) and probably saved our Orthodox friends from some fracture. Our staging point is also halfway recaptured, thus provides enough supplies for 33.000 troops. That will be enough for levies. We also almost 0%-ed warscore.

Then in July despite it being war, prosperity event fires:

iLsFsU7.jpeg

Now we have a pair of both extra holding slot and modifier during this character reign :)

We obviously take it, even though at this stage that modifier isn't exactly thrilling. It's little less that +1 Learning and gives only +0.36 to each technology yearly. Still - one less modifier to roll for so the probability of getting "Jewish settlement" becomes higher. Good luck doesn't exactly persist with next notification:

CK7Snlq.jpeg

Well he is nearing his 50-ties. But we just improved his habits... Was it too late?

Well that certainly is a monkey-wrench thrown by game to our plans. Huuuge issue. Have to re-equip books (cause I went back to "Feeding the Realm" for that +3 gold/month but with new -3 to stewardship from infirm we no longer have 18 of that attribute). Well one could say that drinking alcohol seemed to keep Emperor Meltsayka in check x]. Well now we have to deal with succesion, because things can quickly go out of hand. First we excommunicate Prince Ylvan (we luckily just accumulated enough piety for that), then arrest him with help of Marshal, order him to take the vows and voila!

egVzZO1.jpeg

He isn't too good as administrator but at least will make for placeholder. With that his younger brother (Prince Turush) succession is secured.

By September we start besieging 2 northernmost counties in Syria (Iskandarum and Syria). I must remain vigilant cause we only have around 26.000 troops and local enemy according to character screen fields 45.000 men. With that in mind it is unsettlingly calm. In the meantime our Ecclesiarch converts another Ashkenazi.

Months pass till in December another naval invasion from Muhallabids is spotted. They desanted 14.000 in Northern Nenetsia, that quickly got attritioned down to almost 9.000 troops, as they finally entered de jure boundaries of Kingdom of Perm. Well if AI will continue doing this, we will win easily x]. Also the winter is Severe this time and for once it works in our favour. By end of month Aleppo falls to our forces, thus allowing to reinforce one half of our troops,

Year 1171
======================

Permo-Siberia finally reverses the warscore and reaches positive value in our favour. Yay! Complications follow sadly - our picked Heir out of nowhere catches Smallpox =.=. Our Court Physician luckily treats him well but it still is high chance of him dying, as we just made him our only heir. Might need to pass Agnatic-Cognatic succession laws to allow one of Meltsayka's daughters to inherit I guess. So as you can read - rollecoaster of emotions continues.

If you wondered what the invading Muslims are doing, they changed their opinion and it seemes they are moving back home. Which all in all results in them eating a ton of attrition, losing half their men and achieving nothing during their bold adventure.

Takes me up to April to discover the most probable source of Smallpox - it is in Syria and our son is the commander close by. That said by this point his smallpox vanished already >.>. Quite spooky. Will definetely accept that outcome. Well we turn-off auto-assigning commanders and pick someone else in his place. As he is too valuable to lose.

As soon as he recovers he invites us to find some hermetic text. At this point I don't really need to spend a lot of cash on some Esoteric Knowledge so we go with cheapest options (200g). One of our mayors dies and his city needs fixing so we see to that. We also have to seek treatment for our Gout with previous one expiring. This is quite a decision. For one we could go with brave treatment risking fully healing Gout or counting for things to go wrong to retire Empire Setyamka already. On other hand we can go with regular treatment to buy ourself little more time for some last touches and reforms with this ruler (thus working around 10 years timer for law changes). We also have developed ruler and prosperity events do happen so we might let him live a little longer. I like that.

A7Gp5xx.jpeg

Everything goes as planned thus we could live few more years and finish this war at least. In the end Meltsayka does have higher martial than his heir. Making him preferable for war scenario.

As we approach middle of the year we have most of holdings adjecent to Teleuch county in our possesion. No sight of Muhallabids yet. We can and do make another law reform and would you look at that:

hrG1gAh.jpeg

We get +15 Vassal limit and get Viceroyalty duchies at once. To be honest I don't remember last time I managed it :).

Good thing I didn't revoke anything cause we are already at -17 vassal levies penalty for raising them for too long. Now with that change as well (-10 feudal vassal opinion) things could be dicey. As our weird war continues (where enemy with almost twice our numbers is not relieving his besieged counties but instead sends his army around whole Europe to naval invade from Arctic north) we managed to accumulate 57% warscore with just having 2 counties in Syria so far. I expect AI to move once we move out of mountain counties to recapture them.

Finally in October we get occassion to fight the same returning remnants of 14.000 naval invasion force in Syria. Now there is only half of them and despite them having mountain advantage we have more than 3:1 advantage in numbers.

ebQ7rbf.jpeg

Well bad skirmish tactics luck continues. This could turn ugly, as they will replenish their numbers far quicker than us.

Battle doesn't turn particulary well. Our bad skirmish luck meant that we lost quite a lot of people if you consider that enemy will replenish. At the very least it finally lowered their troop count down to 43.000. We can hope for Smallpox to mess up their recovery ability. And well their highly martial Sultan (17 Martial) is both stressed and depressed while in seclusion. Not exactly best combination of traits when it comes to long life.

Before end of year we reasume sieges and our Golden Age Master-Engineer (with cancer) creates fireworks guild in capital (which has 11 province modifiers in total). He definetely is putting some work into what he does.

Year 1172
======================

We start 1172 at 62% of warscore. Maybe we will conclude this uneventful war right now? Not sure why AI is doing sooooo poorly. Maybe because of distance and our only naval access being so far away it commits to those foolish antics? Who knows.

By March turns out my decision on not killing Meltsayka with previous treatment might have paid off:

BzFheDa.jpeg

Yay! 4th province modifier and probably the best one to have. This will further increase this province wealth (and thus our income from it)

When I started editing this part I was wondering if that modifier will ever pay off for itself. Each city in that province will generate +7.5 gold coins per year from increase. With five cities that +37.5g each year. But there are also character modifiers, that multiplicate that and it is difficult to pinpoint by how much. Let's assume around +60% (each Mayor we employ has 16 stewardship that doubles and often wife adds some stewardship as well so they easily have above 30 State Stewardship, which gives us +60% income). That somehow gives us a nice number - exactly +60g/year. That's starts looking better and better (contrary to my initial gut feeling). After mathing it out we will recapurate those funds before end date. Will take little more than 55 years in our setup, which is better than usual return on investment.

As months pass I realise that Surameli's dynasty prevailed in their civil war for Eastern Empire. They still lost Rome to Italy (hooow >.>) and have few wars but should stabilize for now. First time I see them so drained by their usual antics. They are down more than half of their total levies. We at least get another seclusion event but this time no traits change. No option to get rid of Greedy or Proud and we miss 10% for diligent. We could be also rolling 10% on Temperate but we already have it.

At least by summer Muhallabids (now losing this war in 80%) regrouped partially recovered troops we beat previously (6.000 men) and moved them next to our remaining 18.000 men. I check and yea - they dropped another 5.000 men in Nenetsia that attritioned down to 1.800. Seems like they simply can't get enough of our northern climate. Can't believe it can be "That bad!". They even attack us despite our numerical advantage :D:

mJ6dMID.jpeg

They are only at war with us. Yes they have epidemy in southern Syria but does it prevent them from commiting troops? Not to mention they have should have still a big number of ships not commited to sailing pass north pole. Well their decision but this most likely will be the last battle of this war.

As Muslims decide to charge in to force the resolution before my other army joins the fight, it turns into bloodbath. We lose 560 men for their 5.300. With that warscore skyrockets to 97% so with one more tick we will conclude this war.

mJH8R55.jpeg

And in such a stupid way Muhallabids lost around 1/4 of their realm. They went from 506 realm size down to 365. Not only did I not have to pay mercenaries for this, we also got more that I suspected.

So the great wars concludes. Seems we got lucky with that Smallpox not only leaving Prince Turush alive but also making Muhallabids not wanting to fight too much. But we have work cut out for us. As we nominally get overlordship of this lands (we got way more than de jure Syria) but we still have plenty of Sunni vassals. We have to evict them and start appointing our own aristocracy there. Well not exactly "our own" I suppose. Given all the developments (Infirm + Gout on Emperor Meltsayka) it seems unlikely we will keep those territories under our flag for long. Which means the plan to feed Eastern Roman Empire few counties at the time, while shielding others from eating them is out of the window. So the best is to try and appoint Greek Orthodox nobles, so they help us with at least religion conversions to lower revolt risk. Then create some strong King to keep them in check and gift him enough gold so he can manage in the foreseeable future. The only remaining issue is lack of potential conversion of Syria to Greek culture, as we set the conquest flag for Komi probably + there are no Greek provinces inside this new realm. Future king will have to wait till Prosperity level 2 for event that will allow to generate Greek culture to start the whole process. Well what can I do - didn't pick getting infirm. We start with single Sunni counts, as they (according to my experience) don't rebel when asked to part with their titles. With that Orthodoxy reclaims Antiochian Pentarchy. Not sure how feasible it is for AI Greeks to "Mend the Schism" as they still didn't create Orthodox Holy Order despite having Jerusalem for quite some time and well they just recently lost Rome to weaker Italians Kingdom. Probably due to being midly distracting by killing each other during civil war.

As we invite Greek courtiers and evict local Bedouins, we get another event related to one of Meltsayka rivals. We can accuse him of sodomy to ruin his life. We decide not to do this as it rewards us with Patient trait. That will nicely counter balance infirm. At least to some degree. Months slowely pass (and thanks to our big demense limit we manage without tremendous opinion penalties). We do create Duke of Antioch to offload another gained duchy title. As you can see from last screenshot most of our territory in middle east is under single vassal. It explains why we got so much in the first place. Now I'm cursing myself for having disbanded our personal levies. Most likely he will rebel and he does field around 16.000 troops. So our 4.800 retinues from Burtasy will struggle. We try anyway with "extracting the vassals" from under him. We get one. Then I get too hasty and try another, which leads to rebelion. I was tired and shouldn't make that mouse click (we could still revoke that just extracted vassal first to get ever so slightly weaker opponent). Well time to fight again. To my suprise local vassal levies add up to extra 3.000 troops. Not bad for just taken over lands with not exactly fully replenished holdings. May allow us to achieve something before reinforcements from north arrive.

Well we once again start marshalling troops. But only our own, as most of our vassals have the not exactly insignificant penalty of -24 for having raised their levies for damn too long. It is another war that I will fight without clear advantage in numbers and let enemy initially take the initiative. Lucky Armenians who could try and snatch something from them are still busy with Farukids and claiming Al-Jazeera between them, us and Byzantine Empire. Which is by itself bad for us, if we had the time to feed it to Byzantines. But it means we should be able to put down rebels before Armenian Orthodox brothers snatch something for themself.

8NZJa1e.jpeg

Seems like Jomsvikings start recreating bygone age.Hope we won't have to defend against another Germanic invasion from Finland

Interesting development to the *west of Perm occurs. We get new neighbour. Seems I was mistaken and Joms did really back up Fylkir's call for war. As (probably) only participant they did claim a previously Cathar kingdom of Finland, that was long on the decline. They do run into serious issue though. Holy orders can't create kingdoms or empires and right now they seem stretched over their limits. It seems they have like 2 duchies and literal ton of counties (27/5 demense limit). Now I wonder - what happens if they release one of their Fortress Commanders (counts with Holy Order goverment type) and they create duchy? Will it make another Holy Order? Will that Holy order be hireable? I will watch with curiosit, as they will be forced to release them upon succession. Will they revassalise them or use that newly found allies (each single count grants extra capital county modifier to levies and being independent helps even more) to steamroll the Scandinavia?

Year 1173
======================

Year begins with us ordering our Patriarch to move into newly conquered territories and start converting (53.36% Yearly Chance). We target our Teleuch county first cause local ruler there became Catholic. And we have still 90,12% chance to convert subject and it is one of remaining ways to deal with Catholics. Problems do brew though. Due to vacated border in Burtasy, some Tengri Khazar host with 2.800 men started raiding. They beat our levies there so we are now in the process of accumulating enough troops to deal with them. Costing us precious time we are not marching towards Middle-East We also have to retreat in Syria and desperately camp the Mountains as enemy has 12.000 troops to our 7.400.

I also do a check across our mayors to find 1 over the limit dude to replace. First we need to arrange for 2 marriages. We converted all but one of invited Ashkenazis so we have more than enough candidates for now. Then we lose our Spymaster (murdered by one of our vassals) and have arranged more marriages.

iIiOcUv.jpeg

Another Nomadic incursion, thought this time badly timed. Delay kind of stings though.

As we fight cheeky Khazars, our assasination goes through and another Mayor is fixed. We lose 500 men but kill 1.000 raiders. Our Spymaster never arrives as he managed to die in that brief window of time between getting bought by us and arriving. Takes me up to August to figure it out and find another (as 3 top possible Ashkenazis died since I checked and they were 30+ old). Weirdly there is like no development in Syria - enemies took most of their forces and started marching towards our capital it seems. So I could give Master Engineer (bonus to Siege progress) troops present and started besieging them.

By Autumn we spot 9.000 out of 12.000 rebels south of our Permian borders. We still have levies close be so we move towards approaching enemy and it is enough to scare them off. Then we start tailing them with our +40% movement speed commander. They joined both of their forces and are eating tasty attrition in steppes (cutting down their numbers from 20.000 to 13.000). Glad to see others struggle with logistic a little in those long-distance wars.

We get some event this year from theology - granting us religious studies modifier (+1 Learning) as well as extra piety. I also spot that our last Tocharian province culture converted to Komi, meaning we once again are fully converted in non-Nenetsian parts (well more Vladimir/Novgorod parts but you know). We also captured something in Syria, thus reverting our warscore from -54% to +10%. Did observe our dear Jomsvikings but they just made way too many vassals and thus lowered their levy count tremendously due to penalties. Making them potential target for other realms nearby.

Year 1174
======================

Another year greets us with update on China

GDHF1Af.jpeg

Great. Expansionist China will start complicating things again. First news is from 1171. That's what 3rd-4th Expansionist in a row? RIP my Grace. We won't be able even to get - non aggresion pact :/.

We do have over 19.100 gold coins and +3.377 annual income. Being occupied with new territories surely made saving cash easier. So not everything is so bleak. We order another round of constructions to spend it all the way down to 8.844. First we start Stone Roads whenever we couldn't previously (tech or vassals were building something themself). Then I order several more of University II to help technology spread. With that once again we have nothing to worry about for year or two at least ;D.

Then from Spring to Summer we manouver our levies, that crossed Caucasia to finally catch 10.000 rebel host with our 20.000 loyalist army. Thanks to movement commander we do catch them in the desert and the battle commences (sadly somehow missed taking screenshot =(). From the start we are dominating them. Soon battle turns into one-sided slaughter. We lose less than 500 men for half of theirs (5.180). With that warscore goes towards 30% but more importantly we can recapture one county they did take and start carpet siegeing them.

H4p7BXp.jpeg

Divided into several armies that remain big enough to not get sweeped by returning traitor's army.

Our Patriarch puts up a good work and converts Teleuch itself and few courtiers but sadly most of them landed on bishops who then get revoked. It is probably also time that Pope can call in another Crusade yet we don't have realistic option of participating now. Our enemies do recover suprisingly quickly and by October attack one of our siege crews that was trying to recapture our holdings in Asas county. They have 4.000 vs 3.000 men but we quickly reinfoce with another 3.000 and even battle turns in our favour. We lose another 800 men but they lost 3.400 more. Which means they probably won't be able to do this trick again. Armenia takes over disputed land from Farukids and we really need to speed things up before they decide to take a bite of our rebellious vassal lands.

Year 1175
======================

One of Greek vassals converts his own county on 1st of January. We retake castle in Asas by beggining of February with our more beaten up levies (that slowly recover while siegeing in this county). At the moment we are looking at 61% warscore.

We continue our gruelling siege work and receive message from our rebel vassal in April with proposition of white piece. No way in hell xD. Time is of an essence right now. We can't let them stall as it will force 5-10 years of ceasefire that prevents us from revoking. Which basically turns whole endevaour into failure as big Sunni vassal will take Syria for himself. Also our penalty for vassal levies diminished to just -9.

In the meantime I check up on growing Muhallabid family. We need more female courtiers as each boy can have up to 4 wives. We also pick the worst education focuses for teenagers. So far we haven't had our own Permian Decadent example but we also had only like 3-4 tries and some of them turned Zealous while fixing accidental conversion to Orthodoxy.

The sieges work out in such a way that by August we have 98% and enemy is close to recapturing something from us so we send 2 armies to deal with him, resulting in last (probably) fight of this war. Our enemy also passed away (he was 66 years old and incapable) so we no longer risk succession during revoking of titles. Which could be a tremendous problem as it would invalidate this whole war (his heir could rebel again).

qducsVU.jpeg

Another great battle in which we halve remaining enemy host. Before that engagment we already reduced them to 25% of their starting army.

Fricking finally after that battle (on 4th of September) we are done with this war. Not a fan of those engagments as they were much less interesting that our domestic things going on, yet I couldn't just ignore them and still be ok. But this isn't the end of my problems... Oh noe... Not that I beat them, all of vassals under our target seceded >.>. Meaning 10 counties got away... Ehhhhhhhhhhhhh!

As always grueling micromanagment of reassigning titles commences. It takes some time as many free vassals take around week or two for each title they have. During that on 23th of September Empress Sernyava pases away due to age. Busy I don't bother with trying to arrange new marriage. We do invite a bunch of high martial greek courtiers. My reasoning being that between cultural instability and 2 big muslim realms next door, Kingdom of Syria will need all the levies it can muster.

Takes me up to November to sort everything out. Made 1 great Duke that holds both duchy of Damascus and Palmyra, to have someone who will be able later to lead this kingdom. He is young and quite skilled so he makes great use of many holdings we gifted him. Should make him able to keep everyone there in line. Now we can continue cleaning up and taking over those counties that got away. Baalbek is our first victim. We could leave northern counties to Armenians, but it isn't always reliable and making holders of holy site in Antioch stronger seems prudent.

fnT4mr0.jpeg

Not sure how many we will claim with just our retinues but the more the better. Armenia also decided to move elsewhere and Muhallabids are fighting in Persian Gulf.

As our retinues get busy, our Emperor laments his wife death. We get choice between becoming lustful (with 10% at incapable) and celibate + depressed. We go with second option and receive depressed. Hmmm. Now we have Depressed, Infirm and Gout. That's a lot. Not sure I want to to make eudaimonia potion. So year ends with me weighing my options.

Year 1176
======================

Decided to push through one more year. We have 13.900 gold coins. We continue siegeing the last county in Tripoli not under our flag. It is part of de jure Syria. One great thing I didn't realise sooner is that this whole kingdom ideally matches Patriarchate of Antioch designed borders. That's nice and convenient for future king.

By March in Ayakoz raiders show up. We deal with their 1.400 men with our 6.000 retinues province to the north. Then few days later Meltsayka's older brother - Bishop Kezhevat of Perm passes away at old age of 69 years. He was a long supporter of our reign and despite being forced into priesthood, provided valuable services where it comes to advice or leading armies. Definetely someone that made me regret not leaving up to play. Few days later our Master-Engineer follows him. Thus the last of chinese golden age greats leaves our realm. We instantly order new one from China, which is quickly delivered.

d4Og4yT.jpeg

Suprise! Event troops are here to ruin my day. Well it looks better that I thought. Still their volley gets +200% dmg on us due to countering tactics.

In April our besieging forces get ambushed by some 1 county event troops rebels. Well didn't see that coming, did I? We concentrate troops in single column under our best commander. We have mountains so it might buy us at least valuable time. We can gather around 11.000 troops from those Syrian lands to oppose enemies. We will reinforce - they will not. Well our retinues do as well as can be expected. They route their center and drop their left flank down to 34% of morale by the time they are routed themself (at 25%). So that was up in the heir and if they didn't counter us we could deal them more severe casualties. Still that's around 2.000 casualties inflicted. We lose 1.400 men. For now we can't keep pressing as now they would defend on mountains but we can wait as they move out and then start sieges again. Their recaptured castles shouldn't replenish much so will remain soft targets.

Nothing can be that easy though - in June as our levies start marching, peasants revolt occurs. Ambushing one of our levy regiments as they were moving to Burtasy. Ouch!

O1LZBMz.jpeg

Yo gotta love when due some mistake of your distant family member part of your army gets slaughtered :/

Then another army gets ambushed this time by nomads from across the border. At least after resieging Baalbek, event troops move out so now we can move in with 10.000 troops. I dare them to dislodge me now :).

By September we recapture 2 holdings in Baalbek and start besieging the third. Our retinues from Perm (8.100 light infantry + archers) take a vengeance and beat down peasants. We lose around 2.000 men though. So after that we conclude rebelion, then hang peasant leader. Soon we find ourself in race to capture holdings with those Muslim event troops. Next holding grants us up to 99% warscore. One more should conclude this war.

Then I find a moment to cull my court. In preparation for death of current Emperor, we ask to leave around 20 courtiers. Lowering size of our court from 70 to 50 in process. We just leave several future mayors, young girls and some high martial Greeks for Syria. Then I order my 2 oldest Ashkenazis to take the vows (won't use them for cities anymore but they can help with keeping temples Monastic). We also pass Kingdom of Syria to Great Duke of Damascus and Palmyra. Things are looking up, as he seems to be able to field up to 16.000 troops. Not bad but not enough yet to survive Muhallabids, who still field around 40.000.

On such activities year ends and with it - this part. We still have to scramble for those counties that broke away in final years of Meltsayka's life.

MPWKpdF.jpeg

Roads clearly made an impact. This is the last such jump though as now we will be more limited by technology spread to unlock buildings outside duchy of Perm.

To my suprise we get Jain preachers event once more (thought it was only available for India/people with Jain provinces). I double checked and we have no Jain province (still have Tocharian culture). Not sure what the requirement for this event is:
Not sure what the requirement is either, but in my experience, bordering a Jain realm makes it more likely to fire.

Previously mediocre Patriarch Athanasios gets replaced by 30 years old Genius Michael. Well that will at least guarantee we won't suffer any maluses due to unskilled Religion head.
Until he dies. You know how this game works, a good character like that is going to die from stress, poor health, or suspicious circumstances by the time he's 40. :p
Lately we were barely getting under max Moral Authority but new Ecumenical Patriarch once again put us at 100% MA.
I'm surprised the new guy improved Orthodox MA. The old one had lots of piety that the new one doesn't, so I always see MA at its lowest right after a new Patriarch takes office.
Our wealthiest town in capital generates 150.58 gold coins every year (and has base income of 34.10, so it increases it with various bonuses over 4 (!) times).
Wow! Am I correct in thinking that the majority of that is from you carefully micromanaging to get high stewardship mayors everywhere? I think those road improvements must be from a DLC I don't have, since I've never seen them in my games.
to B-line towards our capital
That does seem to be the AI's standard war strategy, when they bother to fight at all. It's been brutally effective (for me) in my Arles vs. Germany wars, as Germany takes their army from fighting Umayyads around Barcelona to try to attack my capital in Provence. Wait for them to movement-lock crossing the Rhone, raise my 10k capital levies, smash. :D

It's interesting that you're having to fight to 100% war score. Sometimes I do, but CK2 has unusually smart peace AI and I often get an offer where they concede the war when I'm only at around 80%. Maybe it's a relative strength calculation, and the Muhallabids are too close to parity with you? I usually see these smart concessions in the decadal Byzantine Holy War For An Abbasid Duchy, and I've got about 3x their troops if one believes the character screens.

Those Arctic naval invasions are amusingly nutty, and prevent me from making an unqualified statement about CK2 having an unusually smart AI... :p
Well we turn-off auto-assigning commanders and pick someone else in his place. As he is too valuable to lose.
Yes! I never let anyone important be a commander if I can help it! In my Byzantine game, the #1 cause of death for my dukes is from those damned battlefield duel events as my levies wipe out the endless stream of Norse raiders from England and Brittany who think they can raid Constantinople. I'm starting to wonder if I should just leave the Commander titles vacant until I'm about to declare war on someone.
To be honest I don't remember last time I managed it
I usually manage to get to Imperial Administration, but often it's the last thing I do. Scandinavia got there too late, and the vassals were already rampaging all over the map long before I could ban vassal wars (which wouldn't have done much anyway since so many were outside de jure borders). Persia is perfectly viable, just nothing much left to do, mission accomplished. Maybe see if I can build a wonder in every single province before Genghis comes along to say "game over". Byzantines start with it; Arles can never get there since I don't have the DLC with custom empires (and I'm not going to come anywhere near qualifying for Francia, Italia, or HRE).
there are no Greek provinces inside this new realm.
Antioch and Alexandretta are no longer Greek? :( That's too bad.

Since the provinces aren't Greek, why are you focusing on making the rulers Greek? The new King of Syria won't agree to be diplo-vassalized by the Byzantines due to the "I'm a King!" factor. If the goal is to make Syria a stable independent Orthodox kingdom to hold Antioch, maybe finding a bunch of Levantine guys (and bribing them to convert to Orthodox, if necessary) would have been slightly better? Too late now, though. Hopefully Greek Syria will do well.
Seems like Jomsvikings start recreating bygone age.
Neat! I've never seen a holy order so big, though it sounds like it won't last.
to the east of Perm
You mean west. :)

The Patriarch of Antioch is the patriarch of k_syria, k_armenia, and k_mesopotamia. I saw that Armenia exists, so they should also be under Antioch. Unless they're not Orthodox? Miaphysite, maybe?

Too bad about Meltsayka going Infirm, but he's over 50 so you can't expect too much more. My characters go on permanent Hunting focus at age 50. Sometimes one will surprise me and live into his 70s, but usually not.

If I'm not mistaken, the road improvements are from prosperity events, and prosperity is from Reaper's Due.

Does one ever recover from infirm/incapable or does both lead to the death spiral? Thanks
To my knowledge - no. Heard some horror stories about immortal infirm/incapable rulers ^^".

Well Genius gives plenty of Diplomacy that directly translates into MA and his predecessor was well... Not the best paragon of faith. Seen my share of old religious heads that had <200 piety despite ruling for 30-40 years. Now that I think about it - never seen Immortal religious head xD Could be fun to see how it plays out (there are penalties for immortals "Ruled for too long" but I'm not sure about theocracies.

If you talk about "Stone Roads" structures in cities then they are from Architect Bloodline (Forge Bloodline ambition from Holy Fury).
If you talk about "Improved Roads" province modifier then it is from Steward critical success while on offmap job "Administer the Realm" (from Reaper's Due dlc).
As you can see in financial summary - yea. Each of my super Mayors gives me around 150g each year. Thanks to it those holdings get another +60-80% multiplicative modifier.

Well in next part I didn't had and to my suprise AI accepted their game over at 99%. Even though they could make a comeback thanks to still having bigger army and allies. Probably AI has logic - "I don't border enemy, yet he has coast and I have boats so naval invasion it is". It is possibly the worst scenario for this logic as the road is longer than by just marching manually through steppes and well the supplies in Nenetsia are lower than in Perm and further south...

I think you are onto something - the bigger you are the tougher the reforms are. That said I'm not really experienced with Imperial Administration so I think it will mostly just be +vassals and tyranny free revocations of vassals. If you inherit tech points it would be ok to keep appointing high learning Dukes just to inherit their input. With just 12 Dukes it would double by current technology income. But there are some concerns regarding opinion penalties as I want and will keep eating tyranny to chisel internal administration.

They weren't for quite some time. Most of Syria is Bedouin with odd Levantine county. To be frank I kind off lost it after Byzantine Empire fumbled by losing ownership of Rome. In next part (already played initial 2 years) there are also some events that potentially complicated plan of feeding Greeks 1 county at the time even more than my ruler becoming infirm. Yea I was completely aware that they won't be able to diplo vassalize Syria :). That said ERE is on long streak of civil warring itself into oblivion so giving it to them seems risky anyway. Maybe AI will work out some marriage magic as there shoulnd't be any culture/religion penalties. Besides that - I want to see nice big Greek culture =D.
Neat! I've never seen a holy order so big, though it sounds like it won't last.
I'm curious what will happen in 10-20 years when they implode. Independent Holy Order goverments counts? Will they be revassalized or Jomsvikings will swarm in numbers? More funny is that due to typical PDX coding - Grandmaster of Jomsviking took "Become the King of Norway" ambition yet he is prohibited from creating such title due to being Holy Order.
You mean west. :)
Fixed.
The Patriarch of Antioch is the patriarch of k_syria, k_armenia, and k_mesopotamia. I saw that Armenia exists, so they should also be under Antioch. Unless they're not Orthodox? Miaphysite, maybe?
Oh. You are right - I just assumed Antioch is similarly gimped to Jerusalem. Armenia is definetely Orthodox though but I must check under what Patriarchate they are. They will be busy tearing through Persian heartlands in terrible border gore next part. Seems like they are repressing previous traumatic experiences ;).

Well he might be even slightly older (he drank from fountain of youth) but his heir is ready to take over (and what a heir it is - 9 out of 10 prosperity modifiers already). Fifty years of age is such a grey area though. You have to be prepared for him dying yet he can live for another decade or two thus you lose some time. I'm under impression of being one CK2 player that doesn't value hunting extremely highly. I still pick it but it is not my mainstay and is more niche pick. Nothing wrong with spending last years of reign on it cause it gives themost health (+1 from focus, +1 from Brawny, +1 from hunting dog and +1 from training it if already diligent). Infinite potential of increasing Martial by +1 is nice and so is Hunter Lifestyle (love it on nomads or tribals).

I checked, and my non-micromanaged cities (earlier in the game, to the extent that tech matters) only give 60-70g/year at best, and my share is even less. Looks like 28.4g for the best case. And that's with coastal trading posts boosting the numbers significantly! Very interesting.

How do you go about getting your mayors to marry? Do you create the marriages when they're still courtiers, then grant the cities? I noticed a new-ish randomly generated mayor in my game is about as good as can be, 24 stewardship genius (sadly a vassal of a vassal so he doesn't help me personally). But he has "---" from base reluctance, and a long line of minuses for women he deems "unimportant". I find it very weird that Mr. Random Mayor Guy is pickier than Dukes and Kings, all of whom are delighted at the opportunity to marry a distant dynastic relative of the emperor. I'm assuming that the emperor's daughter or granddaughter would be good enough for this guy, but I don't have any available right now, and I doubt Random Genius Mayor is the best way to use them if I did.

As the Byzantine Emperor, I approve! :p

That end of life health is precisely what I use it for. I don't think I've ever gotten the lifestyle trait, since something else always comes up decades earlier. Maybe you're more willing to let go of older rulers. I'm trying to do so for possibly the first time right now. Next emperor is my first genius, so the old one switched from Hunting to Rulership and started leading troops. Not dead yet though. :)

Part L (1177-1184)

B5prMeT.jpeg

Part L (1177-1184)

Year 1177
======================

We continue from previous tumultuous chapter. First of all we have to apply some medical treatment ASAP, cause previous gout treatment just expired. But before that I start with potion of Eudaimonia to get rid of Depressed. Sadly we get royally screwed because we only had 1 healthy ingredient (kidney) but game presented us only 2 other unhealthy options. Well can't back down now so time to proceed with treatment. Court Doctor does his work before outr mixture kicks in. We got succesful regular treatment, which is like the biggest part of our health penalty offset. Then to my suprise potion at least for now removes Depressed. So far so good?

SXNolFI.jpeg

Seems like even our bad for task ingredients delivered. Mmm - tasty Eyeball potion!

To be honest we have some positive health modifiers that I wasn't mentioning: +0.5 health from Tough Soldier (Martial education), +0.5 health frrom Holy Prepuce artifact (from Crusading in Italy) and +1 health frrom Theology Focus. Now bolstered by +2 Health from Good treatment to offset -2 health from Gout and -1 Health from Infirm. Emperor might yet live couple of years. So I succcesfully import 4 out of 5 bribed Ashkenazis into our court. Then our assasination of Ust-Kolom city Mayor fires twice. First revealing our involvement, then succesfully eliminating bad vassal. The same way one of our own characters was killed - chariot riding off the cliff. Permo-Siberian classic one could say. So we can continue but at the moment we don't have any city targets. There is 4 over the limit Bishop in Bolgharia. Some other are just 2/1 so with little random generation luck we can fix them. Going back to Syrian matters:

LICGaO3.jpeg

As we bought ourself a little more time, lets enlarge this future independent Greek realm by another Duchy worth of regions to the north.

After our retinues marched from Baalbek to the eastern border of Syria, our young and skilled vassal king Antonios went to work. He has over 13.000 troops so it is nice that he starts eating those one county Sunni rulers in the south. We will focus on North to speed things up. Enemy despite having only 5 martial, fields a respectable 5.000+ troops with just 1 castle (but also personally holding 2 temples). Seems Iqta goverments has it's perk if you don't have more castles. He rushes some regiments of our Greek vassal but I think he will be ok, as this will buy him extra time to gather his forces up. We will wait a moment for him to deal with initial enemies up, after which we will proceed with tackling northern counties 1 at the time with help of Syrian levies.

s44hUwO.jpeg

Ou - that's very nice. He rolled the one province we really want prosperity in out of 8. And he wasn't even specifically there.

After unexpected prosperity boon, we assign our Marshal there as well. As we are nearing finishing Udmurts we shall have another province ready to go. Might not be Tynea as it is still level 1, Perm doesn't matter but unexpectedly Pilva is at final prosperity level. We also receive compliance from our Serbian count in Teleuch that was Catholic and now is Orthodox. We quickly shove him underr our Syrian vassal.

With Spring we finally start unpacking Zikri north. Once again those counts have over 5.000 troops, but with Syrian levies we do have over 11.000. I allow them to raise levies instead of arriving before they can do it, so we will have easier time assaulting holdings after their standing army is beaten. This still leaves King Antonios with over 9.000 troops for his conquest. Our battle goes well, for the price of 250 men we kill slightly over 3.000 enemies. They still have around 1.000 troops behind castle walls, so we have 10:1 advantage. Have still to wait beforer we can commence going over the walls but this at least allows us to regain more of morale (which was awfully low for those levies).

snNmCod.jpeg

We discover something is amiss :/

Scheme is brewing back in Empire. One of our vassals acquired quite some plot power for the task of killing our emperor. Joke is on him, as we spotted him and he is on our list for removal. He refuses ending his plot. We will use this opporrtunity to make him rebel (alone) and to extract county of Bolgharia for us (as we have plenty of extra space with 8/11 demense limit). There is little time to lose (it is still May) when this pops up:

aV9OkqO.jpeg

Ou - seems our Muhallabid adversaries won't have spare time in foreseeable future to reconquer Syria.

Team #Pope finally decided where the Crusade landed. Not bad choice, given we just pushed Muhallabids out of Syria. If they lose Egypt it will pretty much cement Chistianity in the region. Sadly for our holy efforts, bunch of single county muslims in the region joined both our and our vassal holy wars as adversaries. We decide to increase the pace and do our test assault. It isn't so bad - we lose only 800 men to kill 1.000 behind level 5.5 fortifications.

After repeating this strategy, we conclude first holy war by end of June. I realize we run out of capable Martial Greeks so I invite more. Our Syrian Greeks do just fine, and overwhelm swarm of Muslim armies with their 11.000 strong army. We really are putting pressure on Muslim world - beside us and Crusaders, Armenians are also pushing into Jibal duchy (central Persia).

As our retinues from Perm arrived, we finally could confront our scheming vassal. We land first 80% arrest chance and then by accident instead of releasing him I revoke his county. Yet it doesn't invoke tyranny penalty. Uff! So this way we get into possession of first county in duchy of Bolgharia (that we hold and plan on holding). We also finally manage to kill one of not working Bishops and the game rolls character good enough to get rid of penalty.

By Autumn we have half of the holdings in Al Bichri under our flag, but we kind of lost the critical mass needed to roll over and are forced to besiege. So we send there our Chinese Master-Engineer who grants +30% Siege speed. Then it is time to embark on some administrative cleanup - I extract from 2 vassals to get to single county within Veliky-Ustug (de jure Perm) that has fallen under Nenetsia. Problem being, we have to revoke it with tyranny in the end because it is under double countess that holds land both in Perm and Nenetsia. Well our revocation timed out and we didn't get penalties for extracting vassals realm wide (thanks Imperial Administration <3). Recovation goes without issues and soon everything is back in order - our internal borders little cleaner.

Before end of year I fire scrying button (that during all that action was forgotten and lost) twice getting good then bad omen. It works perfectly as good omen was moment before we won first holy war in Mudar duchy, while bad omen was spent on appointing greek count (thus losing title) after. We proceed to win 2nd out of 3 holy wars for Mudar and embark on last with remnants of our retines and Syrian levies (down to just around 6.000 troops). King Antonios at least is about to capture last holding in targeted county so this will help to reduce number of potential enemies going forward. Then I check on our experiment with technology spread cap in Irgiz:

o28vwUF.jpeg

Forget checking technology cap - we haven't even reached 6th level of Castle Infrastructure. Seems like those modifiers are multiplicative instead of additive

Year 1178
======================

We enter next year with over 19.700 gold and +3.568 annual income. Not bad! Having nothing better to do at the moment, as our retinues are siegeing the last county in Mudar (with their levies besieging our Syrian vassal holdings, which we exploit) I look how team #Pope is doing. Crusade is at 0%. Not bad. Especially as Muhallabids are at 39% of decadence with yearly income of slightly over +6%. While our Muhallabid program is intensively scaling up we don't get the credit for any of it. We did marry 2 youngest male Muhallabids to 4 wifes each though.

By February Syrian Greeks finally take over county of Safed. Well we definetely got bruised a lot and took a lot of manpower damage. Despite that we finished our task, thus made Syria quite bigger in the process:

AGZP9U2.jpeg

I think leaving rest of Mosul to Armenia might be great to shield Syria from upcoming Mongols in the future.

For now we must recuperate Syrian manpower. But it went really well - we didn't die and did the most vital enlargment of Syria. Now they have around 20.000 troops to field and it will be even more after becoming independent. Sadly as I was occupied in the far south, some nomads started raiding Kudymkar itself. They didn't manage to siege through province fort but still lotted 75% of province wealth, which resulted in us getting only 1/4 of income from all cities located there :/. Of course we beat them down ASAP after spotting it but it does costs me around 100 yearly income (until it recovers). During all this time we also were slowly upgrading castle in county of Bolgharia to make it up to snuff. Tynea also experiences critical success of Marshal (thus +6 prosperity) and reaches 2nd prosperity level.

As Summer arrives, Apathetic modifier returns. So I make another potion and this time can pick more healthy ingredient (kidney). Soon it resolves and Meltsayka is in the clear again. Given that I have now some time let's embark on Pilgrimage. This will give us something to do, increase piety and make some use of free time. Meanwhile we are also making another theorem for Hermetic Society (improving learning with it's modifier up to 31 is never bad). On topic which: let's spend accumulated technology points:

ue4iIyW.jpeg

Cities&Temples Infrastructures maxed. Thanks to redistributing all of technological progress we (unlike AI)we are able to make breakthroughs that slowly spread across our realm.

Was thinking about spending it all on Burtasy to give it away but there are 3 cities with Universities so the technology spread is quite fast. Instead we once again pushed our technology higher in capital to start spreading to rest of duchy and thus helping us later (technology spreads quicker if the difference in levels is higher between target and sum of higher tech demense counties). Did spent around 3.000 gold coins on some missing University 2, bunch of cheap (50g) City Fortifications I (to avoid suffering so much due to looting) and some Monastics schools as well (mostly in Bolgharia duchy that just unlocked tech level required). It still leaves me with bunch of gold. I think we invest that in another Hospital upgrade across Perm and Bolgharia - 11 such upgrades are purchased. Total cost - around 5.000 gold coins. That will do for now.

As our ruler embarks on Pilgrimage, his skilled son and heir takes over so we don't suffer any penalties. Our Syrian vassals for time being perform cleaning up operation, targeting some baron muslims that remained within borders (Bektashi Order and some single holdings mayors). One of them even managed through his Ecclesiarch to convert Palmyra to Orthodoxy. It is nice as overall conversion effort goes slowly due to maximum Sunni MA. We didn't put a dent in it despite quickly winning 4 holy wars lately. Even though Jerusalem is Orthodox, Baghdad Zikri and Qurtubah was Cathar for ages, they somehow remain on such high MA. They also lowered their decadence intake from +6/year to just +4. Still at around 40% decadence though. Finger crossed they don't win Crusade (they are currently winning but also now suffer lack of funds modifier).

In our travel to recently conquered Antioch, we get quite lucky. Getting option for Charitable gets rid of Greedy. That unexpectedly makes Emperor Meltsayka quite a material for Saint. We do remain Proud and have "Known Murderer modifier" sadly which can prevent it. After checking, sadly Proud still blocks our chances at getting canonised. We at least should gather enough piety after Pilgrimage event chain ends to fulfill ambition of "becoming Paragon of Virtue". Maybe we get at least "True Christian Knight at least". Wait I will check. Turns out no - cause we still need Humble (and Diligent we never acquired). So that's off the table too. Well at least as we finish Pilgrimage, we do get not bad trait in Pilgrim (+5 opinion from each religion member is nice to have).

QSZRSxs.jpeg

One of more fruitfull pilgrimages. Put's Meltsayka really close to being possible Saint. Can also surveil recently conquered Antioch himself.

As our Emperor experiences spiritual enjoyment, let me tell you funny story that I noticed at the end of last part. Remember our Mercenary Company? The Permian Band? I was checking on them from time to time across decades. They basically stopped getting any gold since some time ago. But last time I checked I spotted something alarming:

mpwRTGo.jpeg

Turns out when there was a streak of ambitious Mercenary Captains like 10 years ago and by accident I took back one who wanted to betray us, and due to not paying attention landed him. That's like 2 instances of me not realising who am I dealing with, which makes him super lucky dude :D

So effectively by accident I extracted our Mercenary band funds they managed to acquire since we re-established them. Without having to sacrifice one of our rulers onto Martial education. Well that's more than good. Now we can excommunicate him to get those rightfully ours fortune back. We excommunicate him and after our retinues arrive we begin extraction operation by provoking him to rebel.

Year 1179
======================

After taking a break in real life, it's time to sit back to CK2. We continue with besieging our ex-Mercenary Captain in Turgay while I do click through many holdings in Perm to spend around 3.000 gold coins on bunch of constructions (Universities, Monastic Schools but also some Temple/City towns). There are still more (as we still have cities without even University I in them. But it will have to wait a moment. I also want to tell you about discovery that I accidentally made after 1.800 hours logged in Crusader Kings 2. As you probably know, technology screen is really opaque. Not only you have to hover over non capital counties to look their tech levels but you also have no way of viewing more detailed information for non-capital provinces. Or do you? As I was reading some technology modding forum topics I found out that there is a not obvious detailed information window in place I never thought about looking.

PetO9cu.jpeg

PDX is really great at shoving useful tooltips deep inside UI. Feel somewhat like a fool x] Still that's explains the result of Irgiz experiment. Must reconsider all +technology spread buildings as they appear to be better than initially thought.

This leads me to conclusion of our experiment regarding technology spread (started over 10 years ago). There doesn't seem to be a bonus technology spread cap but also those bonuses seem multiplicative with bonus spread chance (calculated from demense difference and neighbour difference). As such it is really difficult to get around 100% chance. Irgiz in last decade improved 0.5 technology level for example. Even Perm that has +395% technology spread doesn't get 100% spread chance per year on it's highest difference tech. And as I was looking around whole empire that interests me, there are some steep difference. Our demense is quite high but eastern fringes are only at +5% technology spread (as they just begin their first universities due to lacking technology previously). Which means that our technology investments are far from gone. I was thinking about sponsoring hospitals all the way towards level 3 with Library + Laboratory (+50% technology spread) but not only will this be painfully expensive right now (from quickly checking it seems to cost around 3.000 gold coins per hospital and we have close to 100 counties in the North so we are still looking at around 300.000 gold coins expense xD Yikes.) but also technology (Construction 4) is still not present in plenty of eastern provinces. Given that Mongols will "happen" within 40 years we have in theory 136.000 gold to use. Realistically way less due to ongoing expenses. Nowhere near the required amount. It also a high time to start redirecting those funds towards incoming danger.

Having nothing better to do, between January and February we push our beaten up retinues in Syria to attack Tiberias county. We get lucky as their levies are raised due to some other small Muslim ruler warring them but on low morale. We quickly beat them and before starting the siege we capture their ruler, thus enabling us to instantly end the whole holy war in just 1 battle :). County as it is within de jure Jerusalem goes to our King Antonios directly. So no vassal of his might be immune to king's influence. We finally (with so many single county holy wars) started damaging Sunni Moral Authority (down to 82%). Good. This will make converting new lands easier. We declare war on another 1 region ruler (Count of Madaba). We bait him to move out of his province and then move in. He goes back and we have a battle with desert terrain modifier (and we have light cavalry to take advantage of this). Meanwhile another burgher in Burtasy gets "micromanaged" keaving us with just 2 bishops, that have way more than they deserve.

Thanks to concentrating everyone in single flank we win against 300 more numerous army (3.400 vs 3.700) with relatively light losses within skirmish phase. Meanwhile our vassal king of Syria is cleaning up his realm of remaining single baron muslim elements. We conclude our theorem in Hermetics (improving Learning up to 32). Another of our tribals advances to Feudalism (2 remaining) and I spot that Syria has an interesting object within it's borders:

nnqxK4U.jpeg

That's neat. Basically Muhallabid's own wonder. The only one built by AI across world to this date.

Out of curiosity I check the trade modifiers but because there is no trade zone there, the bonus does nothing. If figured that earlier I could set up another Orthodox Merchant Republic (to make competition for Byzantine Republic of Amalfi). Even though trade has diminished returns it still seems to provide between +30% to +40% of city income on Italian Republics. For reference Kudymkar currently has +135% income bonus from province modifiers (which includes trade route from business focus). So that's not unsubstantial, especially as then it get's multiplied by character modifiers (which means further x1.6-1.8). We don't even include how much trade post make themself at this point :)".

Hospitals in Perm finish their libraries one by one, we slowly progress with siege progress and for some reason I'm down to 6.500 gold coins. Weird I was at 8.500 when I stopped. We also assisinate another bishop (4/2 holdings) and roll better but not better enough (13 vs 7 stewardship which still means 2 demense limit). By May castle in Turgay falls (resulting in positive 68% of warscore).

In Summer I import more future brides and fully stock young Mahdi Muhallabid on those. Sadly he turned out to be Level 4 diplomatic education so the chances of him becoming decadent are low. Still he at least got that fertility bonus (on top of another from lustful). Then I brew 2 hermetic potions for 2 monastic bishops/vassals to prolong their life (and increase their stewardship bonus a little I guess). We conclude war for mercenary funds and screw it up. As I revoke his title he instantly goes away to foreign court (but still within our diplomatic range). He luckily has some kids and they aren't tied to landed marriages. After a while I think of a way to fix that mess. We execute our ex-Mercenary captain and his oldest son inherits. He is still at court within our realm but he is bethothed to female heir of Persian Orthodox county. So we will have to work some magic I guess the moment he becomes adult. We will keep an eye on him for time being. I try inviting him to our own court by ofering to be his guardian but it backfires, as it lowers our possible plot power from 129% to 90%. Shoot. We will have to invite him to our realm the moment he becomes adult to prevent bethrothal (his female counterpart is older though).

We finish another Syrian war by November but get only half of holdings in this region, No idea what happened that we got only 2 baronies when all of them were under the same ruler. We also finish another hunt with Meltsayka's son (acquiring 4 ingredients). With that we are restocked for time being. No wait - we didn't usurp anything we just vassalised those muslims. No idea why. Ohhhhhhhh. I accidentally clicked "border dispute" instead of holy war and that explains why I was around 3.400 gold short >.>. Mistakes surely were made!

For last month in the year we do embark on correct casus belli against last breakaway state in Madaba. I also change character focus from Theology (after another seclusion that still missed 10% on diligent) to Rulership as we kind of want to pass away already. Getting rid of extra health might just help with that, as will getting stressed or depressed.

Year 1180
======================

Year starts with new male Muhallabid being born in our court. He is the grandson of our first Muhallabid invited (but from his daughter line). Sadly as she was converted he starts as Bedouin Orthodox. We will tutor him under his Zealous Sunni kin and hope for it to do the trick. We also assign him Etiquette childhood focus, hoping for worst as aways :) Next big development happens in February:

NW2lAXj.jpeg

Lucky roll due to being at 7 out 6 possible traits.

With that we all of sudden are in the realm of becoming the 3rd Permyakid Saint and 4th Orthodox Saint overall. We have right now only positive traits - Brave, Zealous, Kind, Temperate, Patient and Charitable (if we don't mention Gout + Infirm). With over 2.200 piety the chance is definetely there. As I look the probability seems pretty high (to my suprise). So if nothing happens we might have yet another bloodline. Not that I want anything from that but Prince Turush will be having not 3 but 4 Orthodox Saintly Bloodlines at the same time. Mostly curious what potential nickname will Emperor acquire postmortem.

Spent initial months administering my court that grew due to inheriting some courtierts from revoked muslims. Also recalled our Ecclesiarch from 20% conversion chance in Antioch as we start to need replacement and our court officials aren't getting younger. We have 7 desirable targets and 5 not desirable targets (4 Muhallabid male courtiers + one female Zealous court tutor for fixing wrong religion Muhallabids) in capital at the moment. And of (fricking) course within few weeks first of our Muhallabids gets converted (thus getting rid of his 3 extra wives and he was only 24). Well next roll will be 7-4 odds in our favour then.

In last week of June, King Antonios of Syria embarks on holy war for Mosul on one of the counts we left there. Well that is outside my power to influence and I wanted to leave it to Armenia to even out their horrendous borders. They won against Farukids and claimed most of Jibal (central Persia) but since that long war they seem inactive (it wasn't that long since then to be frank). It won't be an easy war as defenders have access to around 14.000 troops and our guys have 16.000 but well - we don't care much. More interestingely despite Eastern Roman Empire still being in civil war (they have been at it since 1173 and struggle to push advantage but at the very least current Basileos is dealing with any peasant uprising that happen) due to actions of Republic of Amalfi Greeks are embarking on holy war for Milan, currently under Paulician Italian Queen Eleonore. This is good timing as she is married to Khagan Buzer II of Chernigov (our neighbour) who is Orthodox thus her heir from that marriage will bring back Kingdom of Italy to Orthodoxy. Fascinating that once again Khazars are making inroad into Italy x]. Further complicating retaking of Rome for ERE. Also Croatia after being chomped on by Italians is now in hands of Orthodox king but still from "von Kufstein" crusader dynasty.

During mid of Summer Pentarch of Antioch (and Ecclesiarch of local count) managed to convert his lands to Orthodoxy, marking 4th such province within King Antonios future realm. Read somewhere that Jerusalem and Antioch have to be Orthodox in order for Holy Order creation decision to become available. Would not mind it happening. Cause we are still rolling without holy orders when Catholics enjoy up to 50.000 Holy Order troops. We at least can conclude our fight for Madaba before long. More administrative fixing occurs. Two baron vassals die and it needs fixing. But Permo-Siberian court doesn't necessarily have right people at the moment. As I look around I spot in ledger, that Papacy reversed their crusade warscore (that was -13% last time I checked and now they are at 49%). That's interesting as I already stopped putting any hope into Crusaders when they dipped below 0%.

Takes up to Autumn for our Greek 24 Martial new count to arrive. We push him into Madaba and pass him to king Antonios. After a while his +70% Levy size from Martial attribute will definetely help. With that Syria at the moment has 128 realm size, which is the biggest vassal in our 464 realm empire. Another 102 holdings are in our Nenetsian project so between two of them we are at almost half the holdings that want to get rid of (230 !).

In November another Muhallabids gets "spawned". This time it is Sunni girl. We at once see to her education and guardian. We also order retinues (after years in Syria) to return to Burtasy tribe. We are done there and from now on Syria is on it's own. Which marks the end of Komi intervention in Middle-East. But as we are finally at peace, we get nice and relative quick Rulership popup.

VJqD75A.jpeg

Was studying those events not long ago. Basically most of them have 50-50% chance of success. If nothing happens you either failed or succeeded but got the reward you can't get (education upgrade) or already have (trait). In this case I definetely will pay 50g from my own coffers as -15 opinion penalty even for 2 years is more impactful and we are definetely not trying to be cheap by getting -50% tax modifier in capital.

To my suprise we quickly get Diligent. Well, well well. Would you look at that. In the twilight of his years Emperor Meltsayka got last possible prosperity modifier. It basically lowers his MTTH for new holding slot from 28 years down to 25 years and province modifier to 17,5 years. In other words that's 9 out of 10 possible modifiers (here we lacked education as Meltsayka has Martial due to AI meddling and regency). He still places among best that I have recorded (as good as Sarin I "The Knuckle-Slammer", Sarin II "The Leecher", Emperor Kezhay "the Gentle" and Saint Emperor Setyamka "The Understanding"). First Sarin rulled for 53 years (812-865 / Assasinated), second Sarin for 5 years (888-893 / Cancer), Emperor Kezhay "The Gentle" for 30 years (1021-1051 / stress) and our Saint was reigning 37 years (1051-1097 / natural death). So now as Meltsayka is on his 40th year of reign we are on the brighter side of plans materialising. Ironically just as the player thinks about killing him x]. He is our 14th character and 8 of them I have recorded in special file for prosperity modifiers probability. What I want to highlight is that getting those 8-9 modifiers is totally possible longterm with some planning (mostly regarding smart - Genius/Quick/Shrewd). We also did have some succession hiccups. And our next character will start with 9 out of 10 possible modifiers from get go :).

Year 1181
======================

January has good news - the Persian Marzoban, who bethrothed heir of Permian band captain got himself a new, 21 year old wife. Thus increasing his chances (at 39 years of age) to acquire male heir. Which will streamline the whole "taking over our rightful funds" operation. He is still within our diplomatic range so we are still with options - they just will take longer. Beside that as I wifed-up both bad mayors to avoid further bleeding for time being, we are looking at 11.400 gold coins in the coffers and 3.458 annual income. We also catched up infrastructure wise in Bolghar county when it comes to castle standards.

As I'm checking denizens of our dungeons I release a bunch of random courtiers that don't benefit me in any way. We find one extra Muhallabid woman there and weird things happen. After releasing her, she remains at our court - yet her husband is outside our diplomatic range. So now she probably can't get pregnant?

Team #Pope pushes Egyptian Crusade towards 76%. That is so impressive for AI given Muhallabids still had around 40.000 troops to their name when it started. They do suffer from 45% decadence (with around +4% each year) despite not-decadent Sultan. That lowers their Morale somewhat (around -14%) but is not enough to explain their poor showing while not being involved in multiple wars. So they seem to be on straight way towards being irreversally crippled.

BuBu5ys.jpeg

First we see this modifier as it is exclusive to Forest/Jungle terrain type (of which Udmurts is the only one). Nice to see it as it will save some money in the long term. Other option would gave me around 1.000 gold but I don't think it is worth bothering

That's what? 3rd province modifier during Meltsayka reign. Puts Udmurts at 5 out of 7 possible modifiers. We lack Great Library (+25% Technology spread) and Center of Worship (+0.25 piety/month and Temple Tax +25%). Well that's definetelly putting us closer to where we should be. That also made me remember - as we have chance of becoming Saint we might get another "Burial Site of Saint X" province modifier (-4% Revolt Risk and +0.5 tax income to every holding). It's ain't much but we could either check if it can stack or spread it around. I like the second option as we still have unused capital change on Emperor Meltsayka. We could move to Tynea to allow more prosperity gain to be had. It probably will ruin our trade route in Kudymkar (current capital) upon succession but to be honest it ain't the best place anyway (we still have to move back there for last missing holding slot with Crown Focus). Also having Saint Burial in province with our grandest cathedral (Hagia Epimoni - Holy Preserverance) isn't bad fluff wise. But there are some things to do before that.

As we will move to slightly lower (haven't had time to spread enough) technology county it would be prudent to do things that are most efficient now. One such thing is creation of more retinues. Especially as we will be seceding Syria soon, and with it our limit will go down. At the moment we are at 25.020 out of 33.465 retinue limit. So we have quite some room for more soldiers. We have enough space to squeeze 10x Defence retinues and 1x Shock Retinue (for shieldwalling duties). Yet we still have 8.100 retinues from tribal days in Perm. All of them consist of Trapper retinues (100 LI + 50 AR) so that's 54 regiments of them. Meaning 9,180 retinue limit we could be spending better. More if I decide to disband both retinues guarding borders by Silkroad and Burtasy. Then it is basically all the limit we were using right now. I want to spend it on infantry because that's what we were teching up for. Pikes seem the best given incoming Mongols but also frequent incursions from steppes. We could spent it all on Pikemen, that would give us around 46 Defence regiments. But that ain't ideal because in melee to counter Charge tactics we still need 1% of Heavy Infantry. So I would like 3 retinues with HI. Why 3? Cause I want to keep current spread of 1 retinue force in Burtasy, 1 in Irtysh (Silkroad) and 1 bigger in Perm (because recovering from looting takes a long time - right now we recovered only up to 78%!). Bought shock prematurely (extra archers don't do anything for us as we already have 1% for Shieldwall). After realizing that I delete shock retinue and instead purchase 3 Baltic Warriors Retinues (Finno-Ugric culture exclusive). Not only do they have 50 HI more than Shock but also they come with Defensive and Morale bonuses that are more useful when fighting against Horse Archers. So I delete Trappers at Perm and move out newly created retinues (that will slowly reinforce towards 6.900 men (5.000 Pikemen, 1.000 Archers and 900 Heavy Infantry) province to the west. It's poor so we don't risk them getting killed when some raiders targetting our rich counties appear. Will wait for some time before deleting border guards and redoing them.

In June pilgrims visit grave of Saint Emperor Setyamka "The Understanding". We get option to pay 350g to get 50 piety "thanks" to Zealous trait by making big public donations, yet I don't think Emperor will. We can also make some cash from them (+250g) by sacrificing some piety (-10 piety). Last options gives both prestige and piety (25/10) annd 75% at Gregarious. While I like that it won't change anything despite once again putting us above trait limit. Given how low Rulership events MTTH is and Meltsayka being currently stuck at Hermetic Mission of finding text (something bugged out but I keep it to not get another mission cause we have over 5.000 hermetic knowledge already) it seems likely we will lose something relatively quick. I would rather not as all of those traits are great. So we will pick the gold this time. Perhaps God punishes us soon after as on our 100% Orthodoxy MA, Paulicianism appears in Kanin (Nenetsia). Well good luck with that as I have some Ashkenazis to convert so it's up to local rulers to manage this crisis.

Another mayor dies due to food poisoning and we have to invite another bachelorette to marry his replacement as his kids are too small to be viable prospects to use. Then 2 intervention events fire for our ex-mercenary captain kid (with money). We make him Patient for free and then have an interesting choice. We can make him diligent at the cost of getting stressed. I like that not because I care about him having high education. I care about hastening our Emperor's death :). And well it also takes care of 1 Rulership event :]. So we take that. As month changes game finally updates cost of reinforcing our retinues - well it ain't nothing! Over 670 gold coins each year x].Could lower it by 20% with Marshal but I think extra prosperity is better.

Our Scottish breeding program takes off. Some time ago I invited Mr. Patrick and demanded conversion to Orthodoxy. Thus our first true Orthodox Scotsman :). Only problem I married him off back during Syrian Great Conquest to noblewoman thus it was matrilinear marriage. Because he was lowborn. While I don't care for dynasty, kids start as Komi instead of Scottish. So I will have to educate them back into right culture. Halfway through July our younger daughter (remarried since Nenetsian fiasco) gives birth to baby boy (Hulyanka Permyakid). Well that's a 4 bloodline Permyakid without any claims to worry about. Which is great :). Great to use later to spread the bloodline around. Bonus point as he should inherit Emperor's Meltsayka saintly bloodline if it happens. Then another county (Archa) in Syria converts to Orthodoxy. Now that I check on it - seems King Antonios won another county in the north from Bedouins.

I delete Silkroad crew and purchase 12 Defence retinues more. That's puts yearly cost of reinforcing retinues up to 1.000 gold :)O). Ok I might reconsider cause we have still 3rd tribal retinue returning to reform as well. So that Marshall will make a serious income difference while lowering their reinforcing costs by 20%. Then I also remove returning Burtasy crew to purchase another 9 Defence + 1 Baltic Warrior regiments and with that we fully start transitioning from tribal to feudal retinues. Meltsayka brews potions for 3 barons (getting rid of all ingredients).

9qn3Avg.jpeg

We salute our trusted tribal retinues. They saved us uncountable amount of money due to both fighting as well as keeping vassals in line with their high numbers.

Time flies to November when we finally can once again change some laws. I decide to push Viceroyalties one step back. With that we get 5 extra to vassal limit. Was thinking about using Viceroyalties for technology income (inheriting from high learning character every 10-20 years) but I'm afraid it will spread my excommunications too thin. It is interesting idea but right now current technology pace should suffice for our monetary capability. So lowering it down to nothing might make administering Permo-Siberia easier, as right now we have 28/50 vassal limit (despite having 68 vassals when we include barons). There are several Dukes to take care of so that number will go up. Seems I can also change laws regarding Vassal War declarations. We move it toward ban on Internal wars (only external are allowed). While initially I thought that it will just save us some revocation wars now and then after pondering it is much better - should prevent any feudal vassals from "recollecting" cities under our super barons. We will eat that -5 opinion penalty and I don't have currently any reason to push it further. Now onto another 10 year cooldown.

JoxF4kl.jpeg

Now we can move capital to Tynea. We also send Spymaster to not only help with Technology spread but also occasionally generate more prosperity. From now on both Summer Fairs and Feasts will increase prosperity in Tynea.

Some small raiding party (500 men) appears out of Novgorod. We don't care - it is the duty of local rulers to deal with such nuisance. We instead organise a feast. (As I was editing I realised I messed up - we could push viceroyalties all the way towards none in one go >.>. Somehow I was tunnel vision and it completely escaped my eyes. We have no use for Viceroyalty kingdoms so we just ate additional law change cooldown).

Year 1182
======================

Year start with the banger. Greeks got tired of killing each other after 8 years (and going nowhere) and settled on white peace. But just look at this situation of the unexpected Basileus:

vzGPO37.jpeg

Didn't see that coming. No idea why. Despite Greeks being only on 2/3 of their manpower, Catholics ain't the danger right now. If he arrange for some marriage with Holy Roman Emperor that it would be different story but his children are already matched. There is also almost no catholic provinces. Oh wait - he has theology focus...

Meanwhile team #Pope managed to fumble things from over 90% warscore to 63%. Was holding breath to get notification about finished Crusade at any moment last year. But it seems ain't happening. On the plus side for Christian brethren - Sultan Aarif is rocking around -40% Morale of Armies due to both decadence and being bankrupt (-250 g). Yet he now fields 30.000 levies. So it is still in the air, as Catholics might be spread around smaller armies.

We conclude the feast as more assasination events (targetting our vassals) fire. I also have to move our growing retinues back cause they are reaching that county supply limit in Severe Winter (because of course it is severe ;)). Then by March our Permo-Siberian Patriarch finally converts one of the Ashkenazis. Then by February our good treatment modifier expires (lowering our stats by 2 and health as well). According to my calculation Meltsayka at 59 years of age is now at -3.5 health modifier. So I don't plan on renewing it. To kill some time let's held a Grand Tournament in Tynea.

By end of May another Muhallabid child appears - 1st son of Mahdi. We appoint correct guardian and move on. We watch as our vassals and guests get wounded (including some of our courtiers we work on) until I see familiar face:

ci7Bljr.jpeg

Haven't seem him in long time. I believe it is first Orthodox iteration of that legend x] I could even gift him a body armor our ancestors got from some Nomad. We could even start breeding/tutoring Horse culture characters in the realm (well it isn't exactly Elk) but let's not turn this AAR into pure comedy ;)

Later I get excited as King Antonios wages holy war on Sultan. But it turns out to be the Sultan in Baghdad - not Egypt. If he jumped on Muhallabids it would be great as Catholics once again pressed him up to 89% warscore so it could be easy pickings with 20.000 Syrian levies. Sadly one of tournament victims turns out to be one of Ashkenazis we were trying to convert. Well he was 38 years old and we probably would lose them soon but still.

With beggining of July funny notification alarm pops off - our truce with Muhallabids expires in 55 days. And guess what - I can still declare another Great Conquest on them - targetting either Arabia, Egypt for real prizes or Persia (1 duchy) / Iraq (also 1 duchy). There doesn't seem to be much sense in going after Egypt which is fought for by Catholics and seems they are having the advantage. Which also means that Mending the schism for AI is probably off the table. But we can cripple Sunni faith by taking their last 2 holy sites (Mecca&Medina) by picking Arabia as Great Conquest target. Giving it to our Syrian Vassal and then connecting those will make him quite powerful (enough to deal with huge independence revolts) and be quite a stop for incoming Mongols. The costs of such decision is that we must survive for few more years (I was ready to just "extreme treatment" Meltsayka) as our nice heir is turning 30 years old. It will also cost several hundreds gold extra for our levies that will have to fight instead of retinues (we recently started from scratch)(they can still defend home front). On the plus side #TeamPope will directly or indirectly help us by fighting in Egypt while we move onto Arabia. Muhallabids won't be able to deal with 2 fronts at the same time, soat least one of Christian wars will prevail quickly. Ideally Permo-Siberian forces. But if Crusaders win first, then it could remove a big chunk of Muhallabid forces due to them losing whole Egypt. While not conductive for the prime goal of this AAR, I think I'll try it anyway (it still can fail in case of Emperor Meltsayka dying, in case of which we might white peace after Crusaders win their war). Let's call it little "fanservivce" ;).

First we have to provide some health treatment to lower our health penalty. Tournament kills our son-in-law so our 34 years old daughter is once again a widow. He was our Marshall (who specialised in light infantry) so we have that to remedy as well. Well as we got a child out of her I think it is great moment to just marry her off to Chinese Prince. This will make a great use of our grace and spare daughter. Especially as current Emperor Li Zhenzong is just 42 years old. As for Marshall - I find some shrewd and diligent Georgian with 20 Martial (so extra events that increase prosperity might fire). Soon our treatment is done and we get another success (but not critical success). Mayor of our previously richest city in Kudymkar dies, and we can finally start working on making our handpicked and converted Jew taking over.

aJO1eC7.jpeg

Age difference is quite big yet as long as peace treaty persist we are happy. I wonder if this will continue through Mongols in case current Han dynasty prevails.

Bolgharia county reaches max prosperity in meantime. Takes up to August to our new chinese son-in-law to arrive. Finally tournament ends leaving us with winner in shape of Permyakid dynasty bastard and slight prosperity boost in Tynea (our new capital). Before end of month our Patriarch converts one female Muhallabid to Orthodoxy (matters little as her son doesn't convert with her).

With September nomadic elements arrive once more. One in Kudymkar (that just recovered from previous looting =.=) other in Burtasy and Syrt. Ranging from 2.000 to just 700 riders. Seems our reinforcing retinues will have to start working. Still it takes a month to move between our capital counties... So I raise and sacrifice part of local levies to minimize impact of looting. We still lose around 20% of province wealth (that was slightly over 500). During ensuing fight I'm not exactly happy with tactic chances: almost 1/3 for Generic Skirmish, the same for Shieldwall and Volley. We really want Shieldwall on them. Volley is really bad as it can lead to being countered (+200-300% dmg) from Swarm tactics Horse Archers utilize. We end the fight losing 400 men but killing 600. Oh boy do we have a long road ahead of us when it comes to making better use of those.

In November our Ex-Mercenary Captain's kid grows up. But I can't invite him to our court. So I buy a favour and then invite him to court, while his bethrothal still haven't went through, Another province in Syria (Madaba) converts to Orthodoxy. Then month later our Ecclesiarh (Patriarch) + Court Physician dies. We replace him with smart candidates from among Holy Men we invited (11 tries). Then suddenly Crusade ends and we are left with nothing! I was delaying war declarations initially to first deal with current raiders and let winter pass but then our retreating levies made us unable to declare and the moment vanished I think. Now Muhallabids have only 15.000 troops and I'm not neighbouring them. Ehh! Also played myself with that treatment for few next years :/... Also women everywhere!

nh3Eqjn.jpeg

Well good for our Catholic cousins but I wanted to bully Muhallabids even more. Also victim in question lost way more than I expected. Beside that - somehow gender equality made it into rulling several big realms currently. Truly a Crusader Queens game.

Year 1183
======================

We start year with cleaning up another 2 nomad bands in southern Perm. After consolidating all troops into single column it goes much better. Also new Queen of Egypt instantly declares holy war against just beaten down Muhallabids as she has 19.000 troops more. Target - Makuria. Soon we get rid of all thieves roaming across our lands. Retinues reached size of 5.000 men, our imperial treasury passed 11.200 gold mark and our income plummeted down to 3.338. We have like 4 small vassals to fix. But at least last negative penalty from some "dishonorable act" vanished thus making the last disliking us vassal change his opinion. We can reform our succession laws and we do in all held Imperial and Kingdom titles from Gavelkind to Primogeniture. It was a good ride but right now I don't need +2 demense limit and with Primogeniture not only could I make use of more sons&daughters but also destroy titles (we still hold 3 duchy titles). So we make that transition. Yes it generates -40 opinion on some vassals and additional -40 penalty on one vassal in Turgay but only for 10 years. And we finally get rid of -10 opinion from being over the duchy limit across board.

9SYwUE1.jpeg

I realize in time that I have to change it everywhere (each Kingdom seperately) and we do that without problem :) Otherwise we could have "funny" situations in the future. Bye-Bye Gavelkind. You truly was the best <3

Also spent initial 4 months on inviting more skilled stewards. Can't manage with just Jews atm and we have to start fixing somewhat neglected internal affairs (now that we know that we might live somewhat longer even with -1.5 health overall). Then after demanding conversion I send 4 of them to take the vows (all of them end up in Perm temple which was 1 out 3 possible locations :I). Then we start arranging marriages with others and assasinating Mayors. I also do revoke with tyranny 2 bishoprics from non-Monastic Priest in Kolva + 1 from 4 county bishop in Bolghar to appoint one of newest Monastic Members there as new ruler (25 years old Bedouin with 25 Stewardship). We still need to fix our Kudymkar but with another -45 opinion penalty for next 5 years I think I'll chill for now. We instead organise a Summer Fair.

Time goes peacefully until in September our initial Muhallabid dies. Well he did his duty. Now we have 9 possible Muhallabids to create even more. Not sure if it will be needed, as their dynasty even without our help is already at over 50% decadence. First time in long time our Spymaster also steals some technology from Eastern Roman Empire (possible as I have few technologies lower than Greeks so we can keep getting those +50 tech points events).

In last quarter of year we get occasion to get "Administer the realm" modifier in Turgay but I don't bother with it as we won't be building there. Then nothing happens until the end of year when our Syrian vassals wins against Farukid Sultanate - taking 1 duchy that was between Syria and Baghdad. Emperor as guardian of future Permyakid king of Nenetsia gets to intervene and makes him shrewd. That should make him much more capable king in the future.

Year 1184
======================

We start with close to 13.000 gold coins, our retinues are 2/3 done and our income is still quite small. Once they finish reinforcing in little more than a year, we will recover 1.000 of yearly income. For now we proceed with failed assasinations (we have still 2 mayors to fix and 2 Bishops in Bolgharia).

In March another of Muhallabid men becomes father of another baby girl. We also go on search for genius match for our prince&heir Turush. He will seduce her first then marry, then he will keep seducing other women to get rid of Chaste, get lustful and maybe get few more lovers to increase Permyakid family size. Then unexpectedly:

nWLpXTV.jpeg

Each option has 50% chance of success. What I didn't know is that you can gain several rewards at once. Now we only lack Just trait and final possible administrator modifier level

Well as we are low on possible events (just re-appointed my Apprentice) rulership is giving back. What a rare sight! Soon (April) we finally get rid of our latest assasination target and after 6(!) failed attempts we finally fix that city. One more to go (and well 1 that we could but don't have to fix). Then another conversion occurs and luckily it is one of wives to Muhallabids. One of them (Mahdi) also got his 2nd son (Sunni so no issue).

With May we can make another Summer Fair. We also fix the last city vassal only for another Burgher to die and present new "opportunity" to micromange. But I don't have candidates as of now. So we just let the time pass. Summer fair has some decisions but as they are among - pick between +10 prestige, piety or opinion with someone I'll save myself the effort to report on them. Another county in Syria is Christianised (Sunni is down to 63% of MA).

This persist till July when Summer Fair ends, another of our older Muhallbids die. We still have 10 important enough to care about (so about 10% of all living Muhallabids are in our court. Future Empress of Permo-Siberia is also... Muhallabid xD). Given that nothing happens I decide to organise a Grand Debate (special decision for rank 4 Hermetics). Totally forgot it was an option. Lets see what it has in stock for us.

In coming months another county (Aleppo) also becomes majorly Orthodox and I have some thoughts. Lucky we are still at 100% due to many Holy Wars we just did but Basileos being Catholic really is not good longterm as that -15% MA due to only partial control of holy sites. When I was encouraging AI to mend the shism wasn't exactly thinking of such approach x]. Luckily Greeks will pick another Orthodox ruler next so it will be a-ok. Another good development in that they didn't restart their last inconclusive civil war. Thanks to that they could replenish their manpower (over 70.000 levies). The same happened in Persian Orthodox Shahdom of Daylam. So now between Persians, Armenians and our Greek Syrians that's more than 60.000 troops pushing east in race to take over fractured Farukids.

3aymzzp.jpeg

Islam is in the retreat. Muhallabids upon old Caliph death will fall even further cause their African realm is seperated by single independent count (thus no land connection and without Suez Canal they definetely don't have naval connection). You also see desintegration of Persia.

Soonish we get another prosperity occasion from Spymaster. But he rolls for Perm... Which for once isn't bad due to that region having only 2/3 prosperity levels. So we invest to bump it a little higher. As we begin our Hermetic Grand debate, rebelion breaks up in... Palmyra (already Christianised Bedouin county!). Funny enough we don't have to do anything because our vassal King was on his way in his new holy war for Mosul. So those troops will be defeated despite outnumbering our Greeks 3:1 because those rebels have only light troops (infantry, archers and cavalry). Soon it comes to pass (November) and we conclude war business without having to lift a finger :). Sadly our city of Lesnoy to which we just appointed new steward not long ago losses it's mayor and we have another Human Resource problem =<.

hALSVXP.jpeg

Wish all of those rebelions went like this - took arms to be instantly obliterated.

Grand Debate ended in Autumn and the result was the best possible outcome. We get some extra opinion and I think decision might paid for itself but no trait. At least just in time to start organizing another feast and maybe we will squeeze 2 during this season (which bumps our prosperity growth from events up to +18 each year). As we send the invitations out, Damascus converts to Orthodoxy.

NQiQcQt.jpeg

Wow it took less time than expected. Also I think this is the first time that I ever has won this. Not that it matters in this case but this event is the only way of upgrading Learning Education.

In December horoscope for Prince Turush finally concludes and he receives another +1 to his base Intrigue. Well that is definetely not bad. Noticed that Meltsayka's daughter (wed off to Chinese Prince) also became pregnant at 36 year of her life. Well that is really nice :). Soon after that she delivers healthy girl - Nyumina Permyakid. So we are slowly spreding those bloodlines around. So among revelries of Emperor's feast we end this part

tWIcsEN.jpeg

Well we are still fluctuating so it isn't the worst. Each gold spent has tremendous consequences though at this point.

It would have to be via tutoring initially, as the Horse trait disables marriage and means fertility is non-existent. I wonder if anyone has done an AAR where people are gradually replaced by cats, horses and bears. (Not the random world setting which allows dragons, ducks, hedgehogs etc. as well)

I'll have to remember this for when I finish my current AAR (in about 10 years at the current rate).

yet her husband is outside our diplomatic range. So now she probably can't get pregnant?
That may be applying far too much common sense to CK2! :D
Now onto another 10 year cooldown.
Referring to the Viceroyalty part, I assume. The crown laws (vassal wars) have 50 year cooldowns, de facto once per ruler changes.
Didn't see that coming. No idea why.
I know exactly why. There are always secret religious cults around, especially in the Byzantine Empire. Maybe because it's one of the largest realms in any game. This is the reason I'm looking at starting a new game just so I can disable that game rule... Usually the religious society in the Byzantine Empire is Catholic, and I regularly see batch of dukes turning Catholic. Last time they took my character (new Emperor) with them since he was a member of the society from his time as an NPC. I instantly converted back to Orthodox via his wife. At least it wasn't that ridiculous secret society conversion from many decades earlier where half a dozen Byzantine dukes turned Tengri. There are many things the historical Byzantine aristocracy did, many of which may have been annoying to the Emperor. Turning Tengri was not within the realm of possibility! Sigh...
To kill some time let's held a Grand Tournament in Tynea.
Why? Tournaments just kill or wound a ton of characters. What's the benefit to offset that?

Was this the tactics distribution for your local levies, or for the new retinues? According to https://navelist89.github.io/ck2cts/ your 9:1 defense/shock (really those Finno-Ugric cultural heavy infantry) should have about a 2/3 chance at Shieldwall. My standard retinue composition for games where the cultural option sucks (Byzantine, Persian) is 4:2:1 defense:shock:skirmish, which has a 95% chance of Shieldwall.

Levy composition varies enough (tech, cultural building, which buildings have been built yet) that I haven't tried to figure out what their tactics look like, or how one would construct retinues to optimize tactics for a certain ratio of levy to retinue composition. Though levy+retinue is how I almost always use mine, so maybe I should try to figure that out.
Also women everywhere!
Neat! Is that from the AI pushing those Status of Women laws, or just weird coincidences with inheritances? It's late enough in the game that I'd believe a lot of realms have Tolerance at a pretty decent level in their capitals. No idea if the AI does much with law changes, though.
Bye-Bye Gavelkind. You truly was the best
Ehh... I'm not a fan, but it's certainly worked well for you. Yes, very important that you remembered to keep all the titles following the same inheritance law! :)

I realized I could do the same thing in my Byzantine game. Samarkand has a couple of the cultural techs, plus trade, at higher levels than Constantinople, so my spymaster actually has something useful to do!
to increase Permyakid family size.
How large is your dynasty? After so many centuries, it must be huge. The Makedons in my Byzantine game are already bigger than the Karlings and Abbasids, around 250 living characters. And that's after just 130-some years, starting from a dynasty size of 2.

As it should be! :D

East.
I wonder if anyone has done an AAR where people are gradually replaced by cats, horses and bears.
I remember a ludicrous AAR from the early days of CK2 where someone played a Glitterhoof dynasty and eventually took over the Byzantine Empire. That game was probably why the Horse trait now disables marriage and fertility. I believe they started as Namsborg, waited for a Glitterhoof to appear, then did some shenanigans I don't recall to get the horse nonsense going. Might have just been landing Glitterhoof and loading the save as her? I'm sure that AAR is somewhere on this forum, if you dig deep enough.

Always entertaining when an AAR leads to gameplay changes in later patches (looks at EU3 and the straitjacket they put on Ming after the Hindu Han world cultural conquest AAR... :D).

I think someone on YT forced Glitterhoof to take the vows after which, he made him Theocratic Count who then generated his own Horse court. Those Horse courtiers in turn could be wed.

Haven't took that into consideration. I don't mind secret societies much but I do prefer safe choices with courtiers generation or converting them via Chaplain/Events instead of demanding conversion (unless they will be someone else problem). It is annoying on multi empire level, cause you will get some off-religion courtiers through conquest. Without Imperial Bureaucracy it is nightmare to fight against.
Why? Tournaments just kill or wound a ton of characters. What's the benefit to offset that?
For that juicy +6 prosperity in capital xD Also we didn't have many important courtiers to lose.

Those were only Retinues and it was 10:1 ratio. At the beggining of next play session I need to redo those retinue composition a little to maximize Shieldwall chances. Not taking 2/3 chances to be slaughtered in skirmish by Mongols. Went with wiki instead of calculator. Do have better retinue mix in mind already and that calculator helped with that.

I think most of community uses retinues as seperate flank. Often it seems like adding retinues to levies is overlooked by community. The same way people don't take pursue damage from units when talking about retinues.

Pretty certain it's "weird inheritances". Most of world is below 4th level of Tolerance and cultures that enable fully Cognatic inheritance are few. Funny Catharism that actually allows it, haven't had single woman top ruler to my knowledge.
Ehh... I'm not a fan, but it's certainly worked well for you. Yes, very important that you remembered to keep all the titles following the same inheritance law! :)
I'm little less die-hard for Gavelkind that I was when I realised that top liege remaining on it doesn't prevent vassals from upgradding. As the game progresses that +2/+3 demense size starts becoming less and less. If it multiply demense size from laws and ranks as well then maybeee. On other hand it pretty safe cause you can use every member of your dynasty without any complications. Yea there is also Tanistry but it has some requirements.
We all been there regarding thinking switching top title inheritance applied to all titles below ;)
How large is your dynasty? After so many centuries, it must be huge. The Makedons in my Byzantine game are already bigger than the Karlings and Abbasids, around 250 living characters. And that's after just 130-some years, starting from a dynasty size of 2.
Must check. We have branches - Ural, Yugra, Mari and (somehow) Komi. Forgot about Nenetsian branches too but soon they probably won't be taken into consideration. Probably much less than you think because I was limitting myself to single male heir breeding and some of our daughters were misses. We were marrying off into Italian royal family (von Kufstein), HRE and ERE.
P.S - 87 living members out of 463 total members. 3667 dynasty prestige (7 Baronies, 322 counties, 108 duchies, 31 kingdoms and 9 empire titles held throughout the history).
Omg again x3 Fixed.

Yeah, I've gotten that impression from what I've read. And pursuit damage is a major reason I don't do the retinue as a separate flank. My standard 4:2:1 mix is outstanding for shieldwalling through the skirmish phase to win in melee, but it does almost no pursuit damage. Mix with some feudal levies, and it's still very effective and there's light cav around for the pursuit. Also doesn't require any micromanaging when I join armies together, which is important to me. :)

With my Arles Italians (yes, I converted Provence to Italian, trying to work it north of the Alps now) I'm permanently just a king, so there's not a lot of retinue limit to play with. I just spend it all on those nice Italian pikes, figuring they'll mix in with feudal levies and do just fine, which appears to be accurate.

Though there is a certain degree of "You know what else works? Anything." in retinue optimization discussions, I think. Player skill at concentrating forces, avoiding or minimizing attrition, and arranging for favorable (or least-unfavorable) terrain modifiers is a much bigger factor than what exactly is in a retinue.

Prestige is about where I expected, current and total sizes are smaller than I thought they'd be. But your breeding methods explain that well.

Part LI (1185-1192)

Part LI (1185-1192)

Year 1185
======================

We will start this part with remaking our previously started retinues. I had some time to tinker around in tactic calculator to improve currently quite low chance for desired tactic in skirmish (Shieldwall). It means we will delete part (around 20%) of our mostly full defence retinues (250 Pikemen + 50 Archers) to make room for more cultural exclusive retinues - Baltic Warriors (300 Heavy Infantry). With that we will get from 9 Pikemen per 1 Heavy Infantrymen ratio towards 7:3 P/HI. Well the retinue limit doesn't exactly work perfectly for that but we still have over 90% Shieldwall tactic chance on 1st day of skirmish which is much better that our current 36%. It will cost us some more but majority of retinues will be done in 4 months so I expect the cost of reinforcing them to go down (we are currently paying over 1.000 coins per year for them).
dKiffvg.jpeg

Further adjustment to make the best of rng chances in the future. Also hey - it's fun to use cultural retinues for that :)

On 8th of January our Jewish Master of the Hunt get's converted to Orthodoxy. Nice. We send him to take the vows at once. Once again he ends up in bishopric of Perm (as 5th courtier there =.=). We had 5 potential targets that he could end up with so this is really bad luck persisting. For the reference each other not Permian temple has 0 courtiers (meaning after their current holder dies we have to again revoke it to continue Monastic ruler there). Keeping desired administration in Temples seems tougher and tougher :/. Well time to restock our human resources! Invited 3 women and 5 men (3 Jewish) to our court and start working on fixing cities. To lower the chance of our Patriarch converting not desirable character I demand conversion from our Taoist Master Engineer. It goes without any problem and thus I reduce number of Patriarch targets by one.

As I get busy arranging marriages for our baron vassals (2 city vassals that need fixing immedietely and 2 others that it could be nice to fix) and organizing assasinations time flows to Spring. Our reinforcing cost first go down from 1.000 to 700, then in few weeks later down to 577. That's nice - we once again have most of our income to do what we want to. Two assasination attempts on vassal happen but end in utter failure yet it doesn't faze me much, as with 688% plot power it will fire again. What does is concerning though is the situation in Eastern Roman Empire. Last time I checked they had Orthodox heir so their Catholic Emperor wasn't much of an issue. Since then Basileus did away with some Orthodox rulers and now 3 heirs in line to Byzantine throne are Catholic as well. Vassals owning holy sites of Mount Athos + Lebedos are also Catholic. Which means that in due time we are looking at quite a drop in Moral Authority. Seems that instead of mending the shism we will be lucky to remain Orthodox with our Syrian vassal keeping at least Antioch Orthodox. I'm not happy with that turn of events. While joining Catholics for Crusades is all cool and dandy, having to deal with Pope whether it comes to Investiture or excommunications will be a nightmare. We could make our own Antipope but it will exclude us from Crusades from what I remember. Not to mention that I consider other Christian monastic societies to be nicer, as their final rank bonus increases temple taxes. No wonder moment later we get event that removes kind from us. I'm mad too! (More on that... later)

By Summer we are done with 2 assasinations but for some reason instead of our Orthodox Frenchmen we planted in their court as the only male courtier, game decides to generate new instead. I have no idea why though. Our man is of correct of religion. Has positive gold and prestige. We know that different culture can take over.

I keep assasinating (and failing) till in September this happens:
dg2WRg7.jpeg

uFnluST.jpeg

Funny how the man with nickname "Wise" failed to make name for himself. I think this save is little buggy. Still what a run it was. Also Syria went independent as expected :) Currently 9th realm when it comes to army size.

Well we finally take over as 35 years old Turush. With that we start by fulfilling his previous ambition to get the title. Well what a start it is - already 21 of both Stewardship and Learning (meaning our prosperity MTTH is maxed), final level of stewardship education, quick and diligent. We only lack lifestyle to get perfect 10 out of 10 possible modifiers. Our new Emperor has also made progress in Hermetic society - helding second rank and being able to instantly progress towards 3rd rank. He also made one succesful scrying, which gave him "Pet Owl" modifier (+1 Learning, +1 Health) on top of good prophet level 1 modifier. We do have some issues - he is chaste homosexual (which puts him at -15% fertility). Wasn't sure how does it work so I instantly went for Seduction with goal to make a lover out of handpicked Muhallabid Genius wife. But it doesn't work that way and we can only work his mojo on other men. Was kind of hoping that at least that attraction bonus will help with other male vassals but it seems it only works on homosexual vassals. Scrap that - on characters attracted to him is better way of saying that. There goes my idea of "huge administrative cleanup thanks to high opinion". Well we picked that Seduction so we are locked for next 5 years. At the very least we can replace chaste with lustful to revert our fertility from -15% to +15%. We also pick "See the realm prosper" ambition, as our council isn't happy with us (not that it matters much). With that we can go with planned marriage. To start trying to get that "next in line".
h5o6goA.jpeg

Seems my Muhallabid project paid after all.

To my suprise not only we don't lose prestige for marrying courtier but actually get some (as Muhallabids are the most prestigious dynasty in the game with highest score). Well that's a win-win situation: marry a genius from noble lineage. Even better win is the choice between 300 prestige and over 1.700 gold coins. Do I have even to tell which option I go with =D? Getting another half of yearly income is such a treat. Emperor Turush won't be able to complain that he got poor match. As we send him to Primal Taiga for that ever nice SPA visit (to make him 2 years younger).

Luckily as everything was in place - no one got deleted from existence by game. Which means that the very same skilled council who was working for Emperor Meltsayka is now working for his son Turush. Which is nice (due to shortage of desired characters) as it allows us to continue without losing progress. We ask to be allowed to be included within rank 3 of Hermetic society and soon we are accepted. Meaning only 800 more hermetic knowledge to become Magus. Then 1000 more for "Choose Hermetic Art" giving us lifestyle. This makes me realize that maybe we won't even need to embark on Scholarship focus (saving us 5 years). Reminds me of Trade Route in Kudymkar and upon checking - it is still in old capital of Kudymkar (that we left in last part to move it in Tynea).

In Autumn huge (3.800 men) nomadic band shows up in Saur. Well it is time to start moving our "boyz with pointy sticks" towards there. We make 3.000 strong detachment and start marching. Luckily our retinue expenses diminished to just 404 gold coins per year. Will take some time sadly. In the meantime our character makes his 2nd friend in Hermetic society. Great as he has 18 Learning, meaning I might use him later. Have some different strategy in mind for progressing in Hermetics now. Not sure if I will utilize it to full effect now as we started on basically rank 3 with Turush. Oh and as you expect Necronomicon got stolen by "unknown party". Which is A-OK. We won't need it on this ruler. We do appoint our most steward as apprentice (26 stewardship) and start looking for ingredients.
DAMurFj.jpeg

Please do! We want another Invention and Laboratory is prerequisite.

With start of November we get issued mission to construct laboratory. We definetely will want it (pre-requisite for invention event chain) so we start work. More Nomads arrive - this time 2.000 in Burtasy. So another of our retinues gets sent there. Our Patriarch converts another of our old Ashkenazi courtiers to Orthodoxy (giving us another usable character) and I bribe one slightly older Ashkenazi member of Orthodox monastic society to come from Perm to our court and take over as tutor for children. As our ruler is busy gathering ingredients, we can't throw a feast right now (meaning no double feast in single season). Suprisingly our focus event fires, generating us potential lover character. As we are attracted to men, it will be Strong courtier. I have little use for him, as you can't keep seducing your lovers for further successes. So instead of that I decide to just take character modifier: "Bodyguard lover" granting +1 Martial and +10% plot discovery chance for next 40 years. Now that it reminded me of itself it's time to find suitable targets to level up Turush seduction. We find some count vassal in Perm to start our little "scandal". Before end of month we get occasion to intervene in education of our father ward - King Uchva Permyakid of Nenetsia. We can make him diligent at the cost of stressed (and we can get rid of it with Hermetic potion). But he has chance to develop diligent from his childhood trait (and is already shrewd). So I'm thinking about taking 5 year hit with "Out of patience" modifier (-2 to everything beside martial). We have 21/22 stewardship/learning but I can swap books to get that extra +1 stewardship so we will be ok. That would make for really skilled vassal in the future. Really liking this line of possible future.

December starts with another success hit on city vassal. Yet our Frenchmen still doesn't take over. But at least game generated dude with over 20 stewardship. So it fixed itself. So we can go onto another baron by marrying our last converted Jew into his court. Soon news arrives that Tribal Kingdom of Romuva Lithuania was sponsored to undergo mass conversion to Orthodoxy. Well that's a twist. They are quite big and most of their lands get christianised at once but they are currently in multiple wars against most of it's neighbours. At least majority of his vassals converted with him. If they prevail they might even start culture converting to strenghten their realm longterm. Not even mentioning potential of feudalisation. So beside that rest of year is spend on laboratory construction (all the most expensive choices (cause 50g is not a cost).
1fINeZd.jpeg

Our Neigbhours follow the same path we did - due to some Byzantine tricks they got Greeks across borders and use it to affect the region

Year 1186
======================

Our income is now +3414 - lower as expected but given that Syria containing 1/3 of our realm size (151 realm size they had) went away it is not so painful to lose around 100 gold coins per year. Then our first succesful seduction happens but we get no reward for this. Well at least given as both sides are male there is no pregnancy to worry about. We will keep trying as working on the same target is easier over time. We finish our herb gathering (getting 3 more ingredients) and our retinues reach looted Burtasy so the battle is about to begin. Let's see how partially reinforced retinues will do.
aEAUEQS.jpeg

Enemy has Mountain advantage yet he still can do Horse Archer stuff =< I was bamboozled!

As our heavy infantry was mostly not reinforced enough we suffer volley tactic (47%) instead of shieldwall (31%). As our retinues get badly damaged our Marshal initiates massive recruitment drive in capital (Tynea). So that's another +6 prosperity there. But if you think this is bad - wait till you here worse news. We start melee with 14% chance at "Charge through own skirmishers" happening. Thus we get mauled even worse and lose half our retinue stack in defeat. At least our Marshal ask for 30g to generate some miltiary technology points and extra prosperity. Well time to move main retinue stack from Perm to relieve Burtasy. Luckily Nomads are siegeing it really slowly (1.8% per tick).

We finish impressive laboratory by spring giving us modifier (+1 learning and some monthly prestige) on top of extra 200 esoteric knowledge. Meaning we are just 400 short of becoming Magus. With 169 yearly gain of that currency it means that within 5 years not only we will become Magus rank but also should have enough esoteric knowledge to choose lifestyle (with just 200 esoteric points from next mission). Thanks to having friends and 7 Diplomacy, friendship upgrading event fires and soon we get +1 to base diplomacy. That's why Carousing is strong on bad characters - just make bunch of friends and let them keep upgrading several of your weak stats. Here it is more of a bonus though.

Meanwhile we get 2 good seduction attempts finally getting rid of Chaste (our Learning still is at 20 thanks to Laboratory modifier) and another character modifier - Court Tomcat (+1 Intrigue and +10 Sex Appeal). We finally also get rid of last unskilled city mayor. This time our candidate took without an issue so I don't know why lately we been having such issues. Another battle is about to begin though:
O4vWIJE.jpeg

Once again we roll volley and suffer =.=

Yet another battle ends in disaster >.>. We lose 1/3 of our force and it never ever reaches melee. This time our retinues were fully replenished so I think I made mistake with ratios somewhere as we still were getting only 30% for shieldwall. Lower Martial commanders are also an issue. Will have to look into that as we are lacking in that department. After battle I check - 7 Defence retinues (=1.750 Pikemen) and 3 Baltic Warriors Retinues (=900 Heavy Infantrymen). So we should have both 30% of all Melee units being Pikemen and HI. Ok upon checking I realize where my mistake was - that modifiers need 12 and 16 martial. And we fought with bunch of 10 martial commanders :/. Lesson learned. At least our main retinue army dealt with nomads in Burtasy. As our vassals kept feeding into that lost battle we learned that once we enter melee without terrible tactic we actually slay enemies quickly. Problem is making it to melee on more than 30% of your morale while being outflanked by 2 other wings. Due to that painful lesson whole county of Saur was lotted (we even lost 1 university there).

As my Komi rear was being spanked, our Master-Engineer created Paper Mill (+10% Local Tax, +50% Technlogy Spread Rate and +1 Economic Tech point income) in capital Tynea. We also got "Screaming arrows" (+50 Military tech points) from our smart marshal. We once again are on full reinforcement costs sadly. Even more because our Marshal is busy doing something else than lowering those by 20%. Well let's put him on "Organize the Army" as beside saving us coin he can also generate proper commanders. On topic which I invite two 15 martial Scottish lowborn and assign 2 young boys to convert for one of them. Make them commanders too. Time to scale up our Scottish breeding program. By the end of year Emperor has also personal success - his wife is pregnant. Just as he invites another male courtier to seduce into his court. That sex is surely paying off :). Oh and finally Nenetsia fixed thhat heresy in Kanin!

Year 1187
======================

We finally leave disastrous year 1186 and enter (hopefully) better year 1187. Nomads left on their own. Happy that they didn't keep looting everything in sight. Still those 2 bad engagments cost us another 2 years of reinforcing half our retinue forces. Given free moment after I appoint beaten armies to relatively safe spot, I embark on my new Hermetic strategy: Stargazing!
tgNXo9B.jpeg

We begin invitating members to know each other better for future benefits. First run with no success though.

My idea is to collect enough high learning society friends to use later when it comes to invention. Event chain on it's own isn't bad as it from what I heard can generate extra technology points. But the main hope is to make those friends so later game will pick them for invention event chain thus ensuring our high learning score that translates into chances of better outcomes. So here I come with stress testing on Emperor Turush. Let's see how it turns out during that reign. First attempt turns fruitless. What's more there is a 3 years cooldown. Whoop. Will probably have to study this event chain more and optimize for it.

By April one of our commanders (our steward) gets improved thus we finally have 16 martial commander. Also one of boys converts to Scottish culture. So things are looking up. Given current lack of good leaders I decide to gift our one 15 martial scottish commander chinese Ji. This will not only put him over 16 martial mark but also further boost heavy infantry and pikemen. We have so many artifacts so why not use some for our military personnel? Probably should been doing it already but hey - better today than tommorrow.
qxXOV0K.jpeg

Time to gear up our military commanders

As relative peace returns to empire we watch as everything grows. We even organize Summer Fair. First is our teenager king of Nenetsia that turns adult - Fortune builder, shrewd, patient, arbitrary, diligent and lustful. He asks us for one of our female courtiers as bride and we grant him this wish. Both are lustfull so they can breed even more dynasty members. Didn't have time to mention but 2 years ago he (during regency) embarked on Holy War for Sarkel against one of two Bukhal khaganates. To my suprise - he is winning, so soon he might get another 4 counties to his name (and he has limit for it - 1/7 atm). One of our Bishops (non-monastic) dies so we have another thing to fix via assasinations and Empress Zaynab gives birth to firstborn child. Girl named Sernyava. No traits inherited. Well we will make use of her one way or the other. After the pregnancy we get the event to make her lose stressed trait and gain kind trait ourself. On the side Emperor is plowing male courtier after male courtier but we still have not get "Aspiring Seducer" modifier nor lustful. Kind of dissapointed.

Across summer I tinker a little with our mercenary band that is currently off the contract. Checking and calculating the costs. Want to use them against Mongols as our own personalised army. As we never allowed them to grow they still only take 2.5% of our demense levies and some reinforcement growth. Sending troops for gold does not increase that penalty. In other words we can really boost them size wise. My current plan is to grow them to around 10.000 men. The same ways our retinues are set up (7 Pikemen per 3 Heavy Infantrymen). Then combine them with retinues and we have 20.000 strong holding wing with Pikes (ideally under some nice Scottish commander kitted out). Luring enemies to attack me so we might get "Narrow Flank" would be ideal. Currently I don't have enough gold for that - we need to increase size 84 times to that's another 8.400 coins and then kit out those extra 8.400 men (costing us 16.800 coins). So the whole preparation is over 25.200 coins. Right now I'm just slightly increasing their size and equipment so there is less chance they get wiped out or hired (upkeep isn't so bad atm 1.650 men (mostly HI + P) costs us 12g/month).

In Autumn I decide to spend some of my wealth. While we are mostly constrained by cash, building time is also something to take note of. It's high time to start improving our personal demense. I think the best way is with Heavy Troops Barracks. We have them at just level 2 so there is much that can be done. This benefits us more as our personal demense has also the highest technology already so those troops there not only are cheaper to build but also are better stats wise on per unit basis.
MVrSDE4.jpeg

So that's 11 times we build something across duchy of Perm and Bolgharia. We don't hold most of Bolgharia so sometimes there were instances of castle already having Barrack III but lacking others buildings. In which case we try to even those structures out.

That's takes care of around 2.000 gold coins. Still have 19.500. Will be ok for now - with exception of Kudymkar (that has instantenous build time (1 day for everything) we have to wait some time before construction are concluded. From rough estimate we have around another 60.000 gold coins to spend before Mongols arrive. Together with what we have now that's over 80.000g. More if I retrieve those previous mercenary funds that escaped into Persia. Half of that will quickly go towards Retinues&Mercenaries. As there is around 40 years there is possibility of 4 prosperity events at average so that's realistically around another 27.000 gold. Then we have to keep some gold to burn through during war. What I'm trying to say is that despite current wealth we still are working with tight budget ^^".

Before end of year big Nomadic band returns to loot some counties outside of what I consider de jure Permo-Siberia. There is still 4.600 of them which is more doable than 6.000 they had previously. But our retinue there still haven't replenished itself. Finally our council stopped being mad at us.

Year 1188
======================

So after taking a quick break and checking some things I have things to report. As time passed and the beatification of previous Emperor (Meltsayka) didn't happen something definetely went wrong. Turns out when we lost kind it was really critical moment as it was the only virtue in that category that Meltsayka had. So we got really unlucky with missing another Sainthood. So there it goes. More concerning is the realization that Turush daughter from his marriage is bastard. Bastard who was born more than a year after marriage and in her character window has both Emperor Turush and Empress Zaynab as parents. I would understand if she was bastard with "unknown" father but didn't know it can happen like that. Even weirder is that we had no popups about being betrayed and our character is Paranoid, which increases such chances. Our wife also does not have any lover. Well given that situation I legitimize our daughter to at least have a potential heir if things go south.

We start stargazing mission for even more esoteric knowledge. We also finally after succesful seduction attempt get Aspiring Seducer modifier (first step towards lifestyle). Well at least it works for women. Soon we also conclude Poet event chain (getting rid of another potential event from event pool is always nice). Did little research on "Invite to stargazing" but nothing in depth yet. Seems like having observatory from either scholarship event chain of "Choose Hermetic Art" hermetic power increases chances of succesful observation by magnitude of x3. I suppose it is then that we get 30 tech points in every category and 100 in random.

Our seduction attempts continue with varying luck. We first get caught and daughter of our lover demands 700g or she reveals us. Given that we have -10 from both Homosexual and Stubborn I think we have to cough it up. But then the very next attempt on geriatric vassal ends with us improving lifestyle modifeir to Seducer (+1 Intrigue and +30 Sex Appeal). Now only if we could get that lustful trait! We also did order first excommunication in long time. Will have to start going back to vassal managment beside our baron minigame. As some of feudal vassals managed to consolidate more counties, thus they suffer from more negative opinions due to us having some of their holdings being directly under our barons. So if some duke own 3 counties then there is potential for more than -60 negative relations. Can't war them just yet, but we will slowly collect excommunications.

Our barracks get completed on the end of April so I push on with another round of them! Just as I do that we get another Saint flavour event - zealots arrive in Tynea with their great ideas!
a9tFyLp.jpeg

This time just 7 of them as our vassals in Bolgharia are still finishing their constructions. Costs us around 1.800 gold coins alltogether

We fail the roll and Zealots remain in capital increasing revolt risk by 3% (putting it at 0.5% revolt risk) for 3 years in Tynea anyway. Well that's that! I remember to put Spymaster on stealing technology in Thrace. Why? Not to siphon from Greeks (but we still do) nor to generate tech points via events. Mostly to increase technology spreading to our capital from other counties in our demense (as we just improved tech a lot in our old capital before moving out). Also probably shouldn't dither much longer - we have to start writing that goddamn stewardship book again. We are just roughly within limit. Let's see if the game allow us to write about stewardship anyway! And we got scammed for that 1002g we paid as we get every option beside stewardship one =.=. Picked Martial book as it can help us or one of our commanders when Mongols happen. But damn that was yet another unlucky attempt.

With summer we are finally made Turush lustful (+20% fertility) meaning we are atm at +45% Fertility (Midas Touched + Lustful + Seduction Focus - Homosexual). and have not bad +50 Sexual Attraction (Seducer + Court Tomcat + Seduction focus). Once we are done with "Seeing the realm prosper" ambition we can also pick "Get a Heir" for even more Fertility. Should fix our lack of children in the long run.

Stargazing goes suprisingly lenient. We get progress 3 times without having to pick sacrifice which concludes the event chain but also generates us Zodiac sign. This puts us at 2.200 esoteric knowledge. In just a month we are able to ask for promotion to Magus rank. So things are proceeding smoothly! As time flies so does our retinue cost decreases. Most of our men are reinforced/95% reinforced so we get from 800g per year to just 197g per year cost. Our Spymaster generates 50 cultural technology points but soon we have to summon him back to detect plots as game warns us about Empress (but she does have 17 intrigue so she should be quite resistant). Still can my courtiers/vassals please not murder Emperor's perfect waifu? Then we finally make that advanced before starting yet another feast for that Prosperity gain (+6 points) in Tynea. I stand corrected once more - I overestimated cost of Picking Hermetic Arts. This mistakes proves to be to my benefit as instead of 1000 hermetic currency it costs just 150. So we roll with it at once (yea I get that we lose ability to get Trade Route but I don't care for getting it established in county with exactly 1 city.
11odJGf.jpeg

Well not completing Observatory event chain before turns out to be somewhat costly mistake. Paying 1.400 gold coins to get observatory

Well we really want to equipment as it increases our chances when inviting others to stargaze but I wasn't aware that it costs so much. Going for Scholarship event chain is much cheaper thanks to fixed prices. Well lesson learned! Still getting Stargazer and Scholar Trait (+5 Learning in total) allows Emperor Turush to be our first perfect Prosperity ruler at the age of 36 years old with with best possible odds for that to my knowledge:

Year 1189
======================

Spent some time clearing some courtiers out (7 got the boot so we are now down to 55) and read a little about Open Elective succession on wiki. I think I know why lately I have been having issues - turns out the heir to the title can't have any claims. So it even more restricts the potential pool of candidates. Our Ashkenazi strategy still works (as long as we convert them) cause they generate without any claims. Did little adjustment to my Scottish breeding program, as only lowborns are available so I started tutoring kids (as one of them is Gregarious). Why limit it to their kids if we can make a "True Scotsman" out of every child in the court =D? We can even try getting Muhallabid Scottish Sunnis to get everything we want within our court size limit.

We start the year with over 17.000 gold coins (after I build one missing University 2 in Burtasy) and healthy +3.580g/year. As our Chancellor dies we utilize this opportunity to make our Nenetsian King the new "Foreign Minister". He has 15 Diplomacy and is shrewd meaning that beside Spymaster every current council member is smart making them eligible for "good at their job" events that can further improve prosperity on capital (we are trying to pump it up anyway). Not only that but it pacifies him as he is without a doubt powerful vassal.

In February event pops up encouraging me to start another Grand Debate. Well given there is 10 years cooldown on them, why not. It costs a lot though - another 1.700 gold coins down the drain. Or so I think without reading the event window and seeing that my "Grand Debate" decision is greyed out. It is another invention! So those money were definetely well spent xD! We obviously target another stewardship invention. Our only Hermetic friend is present and so is his friend. Seems as i was right about making friends to make better use of that invention event chain! He even helps me with increasing opinion about me and then champions the ambitious route. Way to go my Cannibal friend! Meanwhile one of our Muhallabid men dies at 33 due to Great Pox. He leaves single daughter so he wasn't the best investment we had.

Another Stargazing mission gets issued and this time we start taking hits to relations with Empress. After eating 1 we drop from 100 to 98 (-35 penalty). So I don't think we need or can keep taking those. To my suprise gathering of minds ends relatively quickly and we reach critical success - creating stewardship artifact.
3wNoKlA.jpeg

If only it didn't require 20 learning it would be briliant, as it boosts both attributes we care for. Still it doesn't take any slot and exhausts that event option from future gatherings of minds.

Well while it ain't another Advanced Blast Furnance modifier for 100 years, it should help us getting them in the future :). We throw another excommunication and let the time pass as our vassal king Uchva is taking Sarkel duchy from Novgorod. Seems like he will establish himself and not devolve into series of civil wars instantly - which is always a plus.

Some events happen - during summer's fair we get opportunity to roll for Gregarious (25%). While I would love getting +vassal opinion, currently we are at 6 traits. Wouldn't like to lose Diligent or Lustful and Kind is also nice (Gregarious isn't really upgrade over it). So we pick safe choice for improving our relations with Nenetsian King instead. Finally the last archers are refilled in retinues and our yearly cost drops to around 80 gold coins. That's more than acceptable even, if we get rid of -20% retinue upkeep cost. So Marshal goes back to reinforcing troops to acquire extra prosperity in Tynea county, He did improve some of our <16 Martial commanders twice, making them eligible for future use. Right now I have 3 commanders to use against Nomads if something happens so this is definetely an improvment.

By Autumn we finish another observation and once again we get Taurus zodiac trait. Seems buggy? We already have it. More importantly despite arguments about Emperor star observation Empress becomes pregnant again. Let's hope this time nothing weird happens with legitimacy of child.

I swap some books to get rid of some less required now bonuses (lowering my stewardship by 2 by increasing general opinion by +5 and monthly income +2). We could get another county with 22 stewardship (limit of 11) but in just less than a year our "Out of Patience" modifier times out so we will have it anyway and in the meantime we can make better use of our money generating artifacts.

Before end of year we organize another feast and assure our wife that she doesn't need new clothes for over 300gold coins. We get unusual tribal raiding incursion from Novgorod - 3000 of mostly Light Infantry. Well we send our 3.000 retinue from Burtasy under 17 Martial Scottish commander to test our sharp stick against them. I expect slaughter.

Year 1190
======================

Important year for many timers to run out begins with over 19.000 coins in imperial treasury and 3.650 coins of yearly income. That's healthy! We also end feast with me wondering how long it was since I've seen Just or Gregarious offered. Not that we can take them now but still. With 27 vassals in the limit and 60+ if you include barons, one would expect to see some Arbitrary behaviour quicker. We get at least friend in shape of 21 Stewardship city vassal under us. That's cements his monetary contributions no matter what we do.

We play cat&mouse in Southern Volga-Bolgharia with that tribal adventuring host. We also get an option to drink some questionable potion to increase the quality of our Martial book. Totally forgot that we would love to have better Martial for safer event option. Well we get vomitting as it is still better than getting wounded, severly wounded or even dying. Soon it goes away so we got scotfree this time.

Band of adventurers decides to retreat in the direction they came from, but more smaller raiding bands passed our borders instead. As I throw another excommunication (this time for Duke of Kazakh that is expeding across borders, bullying poor and weak nomads) Empress Zaynab gives birth to heir. Prince Arnaz Permyakid sadly didn't inherit any trait from his parents. But at least we have someone to take over. As Empress is just 22 years old and our fertility will only increase we can expect more children to follow. Also we did avoid another scenario that our child is born as bastard. Uff!

By May we have to scry again so we decide to get rid of one over the limit bishop we had for more than one of previous AAR parts. Using old trick of revoking first and then scrying on topic of "what will happen to me as emperor" I act according to vision. If omen is bad - time to give away confiscated bishopric to one of our skilled Hermetic courtiers in Perm. If it is good then we revoke one more title. We do it twice and get "Confident Seer" trait going again. Also fixing another mayor vassal that now will pay us more. We did do it with tyranny so for the next 5 years we will suffer -45 opinion penalty for that.
LBfEqck.jpeg

I don't know why Confident Seer modifier duration is 7 years. It seems so weird in CK2 to not be 5 or 10 years.

Constant revocation without huge opinion modifiers seems somewhat not profitable. As with new Bishop assigned after months passed our income decreased by around 150g per year. We somewhat lack that +City Opinion from business and trade route character modifiers to better withstand sudden hits to our reputation. Well we go through with it anyway. I can't lament it for long as on 23th of July our ex-mercenary captain heir dies in Persia. Well I did not expect him to die at 23 years of age. Now I'm nervous. What happened to his fortune of over 20.000 gold coins (our mercenary funds accumulated across centuries)?!

His wife doesn't have it. His liege doesn't have. Any of his 3 siblings from his dynasty don't have it nor any of his 5 siblings members of different dynasty. Where is my gooooold gaaaame xD? Did it just dissapear? No wait. Oh! It went back to his mother (wife of our ex-mercenary captain) that is now married to our city vassal in Bolgharia. She has one older son that just so happens to be our courtier. Ok LOCK HIM IN! I don't mean arrest him but keep him as person of interest. We haven't lost that gold yet =D!

Just as I celebrate this development news about huge independence revolt arrives:
w40SGkf.jpeg

Sugrov is in freshly acquired by Nenetsian King lands down south. We got really unlucky as it is just 5% chance and he didn't mess anything up.

So 48 days before we finish our prosperity ambition this happens. Well just kidding : ) - it doesn't mess "no-war" requirement as this ambition has only "no offensive war" or "no provoked/voluntary wars" restriction. Also this is pathetic army - initially thought it is mostly cavalry but that assumption turns flat out wrong. It is most likely based on local troops composition and Sugrov county is tribal. So it's around 1.800 light infantry, 1.000 heavy infantry, 1.800 archers and 360 heavy cavalry. I think we might try dealing with them using levies from Burtasy to reinforce returning retinues. Kolva (North-Eastern Perm duchy) gets finally prosperity opportunity from our Patriarch - Local shrines modifier for 2 years. We buy it because it is still at level 1 of prosperity and with that we reach advancement. Now 3 western counties in Perm have max prosperity (level 3) and all 3 eastern counties have level 2 prosperity modifier. Neat.

Sadly in August our Empress/wife develops Pneumonia and after we call in our Court Physician he provides Ill-treatment (-1 health) putting her at -5. Poor woman :/. She has +0.5 health from Tough Soldier education trait but that's about it. I really don't want her to die, as we just got in on that child making business.

Month later our ambition get's fullfilled (+35 prosperity points to every county in Empire) so we can now pick "Groom an Heir" for that extra +20% fertility. Our Khazarian rebels after assaulting few local counties started moving north towards our returning retinues. For moment it seemed like we might not be able to reinforce them with 1.000 levies from Burtasy but thanks to +Movement speed commander we made it in time. So as they pass through Kursk the battle of Novosil begins:
Scj99Vv.jpeg

Calculator proved correct as our Pike center had 95,2% chance for shieldwall. That's good enough for me :]

After precautious skirmish phase action takes off during melee. Enemy center charges into us and we use "Force Back" not only buffing our Pikemen but also receiving +300% modifier for countering their tactic. Really unfortunate for them as that little contingent of cavalry they had made us slaughter their light infantry with our +540% dmg Pikemen and +460% dmg Heavy Infantrymen. Managed to catch a glimpse of moment in which we were slaughtering 600 men per day which was 1/3 of their 2.200 center. They did manage to lower our morale to 67% but I'm not sure how much was it due to charge and how much for being flanked by their left wing since skirmish. Our forces don't even give chase and only 215 (so less than 10% of their initial center) is left alive. Wow. After that they engage in melee against their left flank that rolled Barrage. While we no longer get counter tactic bonus we still are making good exchange - losing 10 men for their 303 every day. I note the chances of our 17 Martial Scottish commander: 10% Advance tactic, 22.5% Slow Advance, 33,7% Schiltron Formation and 33,7% Force back. All of them except Advance are "Last Stand" tactics that get counter bonus versus "Charge" tactics. Meanwhile our left wing (levies from Burtasy) are losing against their right that rolled Feint (+100% Light Infantry Attack and +50% Defence + 150% Archer attack yet we are in rare situation where the penalty for Heavy Cav matters -50% for both atk and def). As I was distracted with some notification I looked away but when I went back to this battle I catched the moment when their remaining wing after routing our levies, decided to mimic their allies and charge into our Pikes who just routed another enemy army segment. Not sure which tactics our center used but it was definetely effective as enemies sustained 1246 losses in single day, instantly routing =D. Thus the battle is concluded with us lossing 515 men (300+ of them were from levies in Burtasy) but killing 4.445 Khazars and concluding their indepedence revolt. This time without them getting any reinforcements. For moment after arresting their leader I think about trying to recruit im. Yes he is dumb but with Brilliant Strategist, Leading the Center, Brave and Ambitious she should make for quite the leader against Mongols. Then I realize that due to "Broken Spirit" modifier he got (-10 Martial, -4 all other attributes, -2 Health) as well as being Severly Injured (he was leading that ill-fated enemy center charge in last battle) this won't do. As those don't have expiration date and well even if - he would need to survive with that -4 Health modifier. So we just execute him.

What were those notification that distracted me? Well one of our non-monastic 2/2 bishops died but game was generous to replace him with good enough candidate generated out of ether. Then our last Bishop for fixing died and got replaced but still will need our hand 5 years from now on to deal with 3/2 holding situation. Our Scottish tutor managed to convert 2 kids week after week in November. We also organize another feast.

Year 1191
======================

Due to all that action at the end of last year I forgot to change my focus. But we can do it now, as we no longer have any use for Seduction. What to pick though? Business would mostly give us +City Vassal opinion. Checked and right now it would increase our income by around 50g per year. We can't get Gardener/Architect events and I care little for Trade route after previously losing 2-3 Trade Routes with some inheritance weirdness. Minting isn't something to write home about (+100g every 2 years), Selling Land is even worse. Carpenter Guilds and Craftsmen guild are ok but maybe not now as many of our counties are still developing slots. Rulership is nice because it has low chance of occurying perhaps increasing chance of other events (Books from Lost Collection hint hint) but that's about that. As weird as it is replacing Content with Ambitious isn't needed (our stats are already strong enough as "Out of Patience" -2 stat penalty evaporated last year), we already have diligent yet we still risk getting Just. Which then can force us in losing Lustful/Kind rather pernamently or Diligent temporary. Well Just for Kind isn't the worst. Don't feel like micromanaging scheming right now and beside ensuring that mercenary funds go back there is not a lot to do with it. Soon we will start rearranging our realm so it might be too much to micromanage at the same time. Both Martial focuses will mess our trait setup and are either not needed now (Hunting) or at all (Warfare). Theology is kind of more bad than good - yes Pilgrim means we somewhat improve opinion about us but still we mess traits by getting Zealous/Cynical/Temperate and losing Lustful. It would increase our odds of "Summoning Divine Being" hermetic event occuring though. The same for Scholarship but it has even less going - we already have Scholar, we don't need to get diligent or other traits. Yes there are "smart" Jews to invite to take over as Chancellor and Spymaster so we have the trio (Chancellor, Steward, Spymaster) for extra technology points while still having everyon's chance for prosperity. Scholarship would cut MTTH in half. Not fantastic, not terrible. We won't be using those tech points anytime soon though. The issue is that basic MTTH for those is 280 months. So even at 50% of that value we are expecting 50 tech points from each of them every 11-12 years. Which leaves us with Diplomacy options. I really like Family right now (+2 Diplomacy, +25% Fertility and +1 Health). We have quite a few targets for that, we only risk getting Proud and lifestyle modifiers add even more fertility. We have also kind trait to improve events with spouse (if they even happen given our character is Homosexual). Similary to Rulership it is light focus and by investing in it we are counting on getting better heir. There is also Carousing with benefit of not risking any trait gain but ability to slowly over years to build core of loyalist vassals so our little tyranny here and there can intensify without consequences to our income. But it will require more micromanagment in our already busy schedule with feasts, summer fairs and hermetic events. Hmmm...

Decided for safe and steady Family in the end. There is more to be done though. Our Nenetsian King got himself an heir. We can betroth our 3 years old Princess Sernyava to his son matrilineary to pass the bloodlines around and ensure alliance (with them no matter what) during Mongol invasion with whichever of her brothers takes over Empire. Then I proceed to release Nenetsia as I wanted and realize - game won't let me.
dFRfcyI.jpeg

Never did I bothered to check the requirements for releasing vassals. Well shoot! Seems I will have to keep them around =.=

The only way I see for that to happen is provoking rebelion. Which probably won't happen as he has only 20% strenght of our levies and I can't lower my own to allow him without other vassals going bananas. We start writing theorem for Hermetics (to get towards 31 Learning), get new baron vassal friend and before end of first month we also get "Good at job" event for Marshal meaning +10% levy size and +6 prosperity in Tynea (capital).

February starts with arrival of Jomsvikings in Mordva. What are they doing there you ask? Sightseeing obviously. And getting as many souvenirs as possible 8D. Unlucky for them we have 3 times their force size in Burtasy next door. So we throw them at enemy. There might be losses if they behave prudent and roll Advance instead of their culture specific charge. In 2nd case it will be Norse bloodbath. Time will tell. On topic of - it's high time to start moving retinues from Perm to Votyaki next door as we soon will start our extraction wars. Starting with 73 years old duke of Votyaki. Time to start annihilating all duke titles as we have 27/50 vassal limit to our disposal. Unlucky soon after we get approached by our Chancellor with offer of resolving some dispute with one of my vassals. I interpret the tooltip wrong and think I am just about to receive 360g from mayor but we give it instead. Most painful! Patriarch soon informs us that he converted Mahdi ibn-Abdul-Qadir. Well he already sired 5 children and they remain sunni and there was no chance of him getting decadent. That said I think this whole program ended uneeded as Muhallabid got relegated to being 3rd-4th rate power. They managed to climb up to 58% decadence on their own and I'm not sure, if courtiers in my realm can even get decadent trait. We could be getting them nice and useless then ask them to leave our court with hope they will return to their dynasty (and become decaent during reign of regencies). I try this idea with our Muhallabid rival but he joins Khazar company instead of travelling all the way down to Ethiopia. Still thanks to our interest in Muhallabid dynasty matters I got impressive current empress so it was not all wasted effort.

Turns out Jomsvikings didn't implode or they revasalized quickly as they still retain their size on new Grandmaster. HRE starts eating Denmark though.

Some child with unknown father comes into this world and we instantly put him on that "Scottish" education program under our best Gregarious tutor for that. That's like 4th boy we designate for that intent and all previous are already Scottish/Orthodox. As we square off with Norse, our Nenetsian vassal feels solidarity and declares holy war for Karelia on Jomsvikings Holy Order. They are both feudal (well Joms are Holy order but they have the same holdings) and have similar number of troops so no idea who wins this. Also our King Uchva got little overzealous in his pursuit of Theology and on 9th of May burnt his wife on stake. What a sacrifice (as he was lustful). Truly sets example for all of us. They had 2 children together (last was girl that was birthed year ago) but somehow she got excommunicated and that was it. Not sure if AI wants new wife (the previous was 22 at the moment of death) with Gavelkind and no prospect of going out of it anytime soon due to technology. Now that I think about it there is different way to cede Nenetsia out - we can help them make Empire of Rus. Not anytime soon but in like 100 years by destroying Slavic Novgorod and feeding Nenetsia all it's lands. Not before Mongols though.

We decide to reform our Empire a little. Time to fiddle with Feudal obligations:
afBGCzK.jpeg

We don't care much for feudal taxes - they can spend it on upgrading their holdings. We will take 50-80% of their levies instead of 40-60%

Will admit it was somehow ballsy move - adding another 10 opinion penalty on top of current tyranny malus. But that's how we roll in chilly north ; ). Perhaps I should instead Empower the Council to get shorter law change cooldown. If I did that then I would have 4 law changes (1196, 1201, 1206 and 1211) instead of 2 (1201 and 1211). But If I pass it next (1201) then we still end with 2 obligations (most likely) reforms in 1206 and 1211. We didn't have demense limit to spare too. Despite that we have other matters to attend - one of our mayors dies and needs replacement. Sadly we run out of possible replacements. So we invite new steward with requirement of him not having any claims in mind. We also start extraction of of Votyaki duchy. We start with western part of realm cause I don't know which Kingdom in the east will Mongols target first (and there is chance we lose). So working there might be progress lost in the future. While Kingdom of Perm and Volga-Bolgharia are relatively safe. Soon new marriage in targeted baron court is made so we start our skull&dagger action.

Our Theorem gets endorsed (+2 Learning yohoo!) and we use 4-5 of our ingredient on protective charm (against Satanic powers) so once again we go to gather more (and end with 5 herbs - most of them I remember as healthy). By End of September I realize that it is time for Empress Zaynbab bad treatment cooldown to wear off and as I check her character screen we see no sign of Pneumonia left. Well that just turned super awesome. So picking Family might pay off big time as now she no longer suffer -50% fertility malus.
UgSKJ51.jpeg

Western part of our realm is much less centralised compared to East. It means we should be able to break any bigger vassals here way quicker.

By 19th of November we conclude first Votyaki war but what about the second one? Our target has 4 titles to revoke so with limit of just 2 titles per betrayal we have to do it again. Luckily he is still excommunicated so our whole trick with imprisoning->releasing him until he rebels (as nobody cares for excommunicated rulers and thanks to Orthodoxy we have full access to this power once a year) and well we just emptied his castles so there is not much to defend now. We destroy duchy of Votyaki (beside current besieged owner no one cares as 2 county duchy has only 1 non-castle holding that is under our mayor in Tynea that is de jure within duchy of Perm borders). We also acquire county of Syrt in west Bolgharia for ourself (as we are holding that area).

In December we take over old Duke's capital again (putting us at 75% warscore), perfectly proceed with replacing bad mayor with our planted candidate (everything worked!) and spent little time ensuring education for everyone is as planned.

Year 1192
======================

Last for this part year starts with close to 25.000 gold coins in imperial coffers. Given that I think we might add another round of Barrack upgrades across our demense. That costs us almost 3.000 gold and for first time we lack technology in our county of Bolgharia. Well we can spend those coins on bringing other building up to snuff (Castle town II -> III).

Just as we besiege our Votyaki duke on his way out of being ruler, to my astonishment Emperor Turush already completes writing book. That must be personal record to start and finish book writing within single part. How long did it took? Around 7 years? Wow. We also roll not bad
nXTeFeF.jpeg

Checked and we might be able to give it to our Courtiers/Commanders as they share our goverment type :) While Morale Damage might be not desired, extra morale defence definetely will be a game changer.
Don't be fooled though. With 20 years cooldown before we can write again it isn't really feasible to expect finishing writing another book. Unless we utilize Fountain of Youth on top of Hunting focus. Now I talked myself into trying >.>. Due to thinking about it I mess up as destroying Votyaki title just allowed our Votyaki duke to remake this title... Putting us unable to fully evict him from his holdings. Lesson learned I suppose. At least in Keltma (we got from this round of war) we seeded good Orthodox Komi commander - Cavalry Leader with Patient and 17 Martial. My plan right now is to seed high Martial feudal counts as most of what I want from them is levies so this will help and will persist for the new feature. Should strenghten Permo-Siberia quite substantially. We also get Family event - marital bliss. So we can get +15 opinion modifier (Love) with her despite not being attracted to women. Just now I noticed how long those modifiers are (20 years). That might put Family focus slightly higher in my evaluation.
Ltl6sox.jpeg

So this focus is working for Homosexual character. Wasn't sure.

We fix our mistake by end of April. Then move troops for another 2 extractions. In the meantime I revoke vassals from under our targets and make a horoscope for daughter. It turns that stars have martial related fate in store for princess Sernyava. We can support that as her match is already made and it doesn't hurt us to have martial oriented wife for future ruler of Nenetsia. On topic which, he asked us for new wife. But picked Sunni courtier :x. On one hand if he converts we can make him independent. On other hand this will destabilize his realm big time >D. As he has quite few holdings + king's retinue he might even prevail. Not sure if it was wise to let him have muslim wife but he got them. (After editing it is even more complicated - King Uchva is Zealous and on Theology focus so quicker he does converts to heresy instead of different religion group I think). On the plus side after dropping 1.700 of his troops in Stockholm to be eaten by 7.000 Jomsvikings, he got crafty and decided he no longer likes to fight enemies with equal numbers. Thus he employed Sami mercenary band to get 3.000 more troops. It's a discovery as their captain is still within Suomenusko Warrior Lodge. It still exist to my suprise. Probably due to single Nenetsian island county remaining Nenetsian/Suomenusko.
JgeSvOL.jpeg

Another two dukes have to go!

We make horoscope for Prince Arnaz as well and we get another small commander. Well he might need it for invasion from the east I suppose. We continue besieging when all of the sudden games gives us bad development - peasants rise up in Mari and all of sudden our 3.000 retinues find itself on receiving end of 11.000 light troops. We lose and have to move retinues from Cheremisia to deal with them before they go independent. It was bad as we haven't had commander there so we lost 2/3 of them. Damn that will cost.

Sadly by November turns out our 6.900 strong retinues army gets defeated as well, as our commander wanted to keep rolling those shieldwalls instead of entering melee and enemy had rather strong luck with Feints. Seems we have to summon main forces to deal with that peasant rebelion hiding in the forest. Ahhh.

By December we return to somewhat forgotten tradition of receiving presents from Santa Claus. This time we got nickname - "the Mule". Well not nice but our character is indeed stubborn. Somewhat better news is Empress Zaynab becoming pregnant for the third time. Just now our Paranoid ruler starts questioning, if he is the father. Maybe because he started loving her? And on that note we end with levies marching and our economy suffering costs of lost battles against big peasant rebelion in Mari.

We keep slowly increasing our income.

It's from an event that happens about a month after the birth. The event states that when the mother is getting communion for the first time since giving birth, she nearly chokes and 'reveals' the name of the baby's 'real father' (which doesn't change the father, just makes your child a bastard).

It's honestly as stupid as that time in CK3 where your heir would suddenly gain disputed heritage all the time (because of a different character having a specific focus iirc).
