Flockingbird... we'll be launching Blaaat's survey craft in a month.

Did you want the second survey craft?

:D No? Thank you for asking, though. :)

I like reading sf but don’t want to be stuck in a tin can. :p Even just pretending! :D

I prefer this version, actually:

Blaaat will be taking off shortly to find out whether there is life on Mars.

Now four of our six shipyards are working on new construction:

Blaaat's survey craft has been launched!

sb-035.jpg

Blaaat heads first for Earth's moon, and surveys it from low orbit.

Meanwhile, the shipyard begins work on a second survey craft.

@Blaaat, you may rename your ship if you wish. Some sort of Beetle name, please... Cockroach, Ladybug, Scarab, Dung Beetle... that sort of thing.

Blaaat finds Luna to be entirely barren of the rare and precious TN minerals. Then Mercury, the same. Then Venus. No luck. Finally, she makes a modest but useful mineral strike on Mars. There will indeed be life on Mars... once we set up our first colony there.

sb-036.jpg

One-and-a-half million Duranium at 70% concentration... and note that it says: "The potential for a ground survey is Excellent".

This is a moderately rare message, which urges us to build some Geology Team ground units and transport them to Mars to search the planet on foot.

I have indeed expanded our ground forces training facilities (from 1 to 2), but we don't yet have the techs that I want to have before building ground units. Soon.

Nov 26th 1955

The second survey craft has been launched, and the third (and last) one laid down. Blue Emu takes command, and heads out into space to survey a few of the nearest comets. This is almost certain to produce results of some sort... although the deposits might be disappointingly small.

As expected, I found a bunch of small deposits on the comets, but no game-changers. At least, as of January 1956.

Can I take the last survey craft and captain the Stag Beetle?
Sure!

Have you played Aurora before?

There's a link to our first completed forum game of Aurora (years ago) in my signature. Ad Astra.

The -F just indicates a Forum member, rather than a generic NPC. At the moment you are searching the asteroid belt for any possible TN-mineralized asteroids.

The ship has been renamed.

Commander Blaaat has found LOTS of Sorium (as in: more than half a billion tons) in the atmosphere of Jupiter, but in rather low concentrations (40%). Hopefully one of the outer gas giants will have a more concentrated deposit.

June 9th 1956

Our first interplanetary Freighter comes out of the shipyard!... and work immediately begins on a second one.

For the moment, it will be used to carry life-support infrastructure out to Mars, and stockpile it there in advance of the arrival of our Colonists... we don't actually have a Colony Ship yet. We're building a new shipyard specifically to produce Colony Ships. Later on, the Freighter will be used for tasks like carrying automated mines out to an off-world mining site, carrying the refined ore back to Earth, and carrying magnetic catapults out to mining sites, so they can launch their refined ore back to Earth.

I've read your other games which prompted me to download it and I only got a few years in before telling myself I'd come back to it and then just not. I love the idea of Aurora and Dwarf Fortress but devoting the time to learning them is not something I've been able to do.

Both Aurora (Steve Walmesly) and Dwarf Fortress (Toady) were basement projects, too... one madman working at home instead of a development team.

We have explored a considerable part of the Sol system, and have yet to really strike it rich. All of the mineral finds have been pretty modest so far.

... perhaps we should put more emphasis on researching interstellar drives? If the minerals we need are not here in the Sol system, let's go looking for them.

Finally! Not that I'm particularly interested in producing weak early-game lasers... but this gives me the last tech I need to start producing ground units.

Ooh, I missed this. I'll sign up for the next wave of survey ships if/when we launch, and I may have to dust off my own copy as well. I haven't played since 2.1.1, so I'm sure I missed quite a bit.

Considering how much luck I have with surveying I think renaming my ship to Dung Beetle seems appropriate.

On the bright side this does mean early interstellar exploration so that's a good thing in my book. :)

Renamed. We'll probably be breaking out of the Sol system in four to six years.

Our next survey ship will likely be interstellar. We already have some civilian ships launched, of course... a Freighter and a Tug.

Do ground teams have leaders? Can I command a ground unit?
Yes.

All of the hazards are enabled (Precursors, Star Swarm, Invaders, Rakhas, Ether Raiders)
What are those? As in, what does each of them entail. And do w know for certain all of them will happen?

our main NPR opponent
Do we know who that will be?

he inner solar system. The dotted circle represents the limit of our current Earth-based detection systems, assuming a fairly "noisy" Thermal or EM target.

sb-003.jpg
What's th 1000 125 m at the end of the thermal and EM names for the soundary?

We have two extra zero-skill scientists that we can re-purpose, so we'll make one of them a zero-skill Construction / Production scientist and the other one a zero-skill Missile scientist.

sb-005.jpg
What'st the percentage at the end of the names?

Note that I am perforce using scientists outside their specialty.
Why?

Finally, a major mineral strike... and a major complication.

A civilian company (ie: not player-controlled) Rowe Industries has announced the discovery of large deposits of high-grade TN minerals on the dwarf planet of Quaoar.

sb-040.jpg

... and they have claimed exclusive mining rights on the planet, as their own company property. The Blue Emu government considers this completely unacceptable, since it sets the precedent that planets, moons and other bodies can be claimed and (in effect) owned by private corporations. If this is allowed then the government can be crowded out of the interstellar colonization and exploitation game.

Legal measures are underway to settle the matter by nationalizing the private company, while appropriate legislation is being passed.

To finish off the survey of Earth, here is our starting situation:

Until we get a few technologies researched, we don't really have much that's worth building. So I loaded a few obvious builds into the queue... some Financial Centers, to pay for the rest of our construction, a couple of shipyards, and a second Military Academy, to spawn a few more Scientists.

Our two starting shipyards (one Naval, one Commercial) are both expanding and will continue to do so.
Why is Earth all under an imperial government? I thought hte nazis lost.
