Interesting. Why send back Sarthes? Afraid we'll send a force around them?

Our replacement Intel ship picks up the Lot-et-Garonnes on thermal at a range of 217 million km.

Let's try not to get blown out of the sky this time.

Maybe he just launched something from his shipyards and wants an escort for it?

Picked up the Sarthes on Thermal at 176 million km.

This is probably about as good as it safely gets. We'll reverse course at 150 million km. That's nearly triple the distance at which they whacked our scout.

Our last Intel vessel was able to get close enough to pick up the Vosges as well... but died not long afterward. Hardly worth the risk.

So by bringing the ESN Red Orchestra over, we have repaired the hole in our Battlespace Intel.

Good. Splitting his forces allows us the chance to defeat them in detail.

I know what a split is. I don't see how that's relevant to this, though.

At 177 million km, the ESN Red Orchestra picks up three more Gards on Thermal, adding to the one already on our screens.

Recall that the leading Sarthe force split, with at least two Sarthes heading back toward planet Mechanus. Who went with them?

There were both Vosges and Gards in the original Sarthe force... how did THEY split? Has the PD fire been weakened?

This most recent detection answers the question.

One Gard is at 173 million km, and three more at 177 million km. There were five Gards in the original force. So one Gard left with the retreating Sarthes.

We just spotted a fifth Sarthe. Excellent.

There were nine Sarthes in the original contact.

One was deployed with the Lot-et-Garonne group along with three of the Gards, and eight more in the advance force along with two of the Gards.

The advance force split, and it is now clear that it took with it half of the Sarthes (four out of eight) and half of the Gards (one of two).

The Advance force now has only one AMM-PD vessel in company, and a few Laser PD escorts.

The Carrier force that had been detached to Phi Arietis has rejoined and merged back into the Combined Fleet.

The detached Gunship force is still on the way back. They will arrive before the enemy force does, though.

The Modrons are one billion km from the jump point. Still much too far away for a Fighter strike.

The volume of space surrounding the jump point is already strewn with wrecks for millions of km around.

And the real battle for Mechanus hasn't even begun yet.

The enemy fleet (less the detached force of Sarthes) continues to follow our AWACS scout vessel back toward the jump point.

The ESN Red Orchestra Intel vessel is slowly slipping around behind them to see if the detached force of Sarthes is following in their wake or has departed.

The walls have ears, I know THAT.
These days, they have eyes too. 1984 was supposed to be a cautionary tale; not an instruction manual.
