I had exactly the same problem the threadstarter described, after I had replaced my aging SB Live! with an SB Audigy II, and installed the VxD drivers that go with it.

Each sound fragment played only once for each action associated with it, and then kept silent until I quit/restart EU2.

When I changed from the VxD based drivers to the WDM based drivers, the problem disappeared and everything works as it should since then.

I had the non default VxD's installed in the first place when I was trying to nail down the infinite loop errors I got after said upgrade. That turned out not to be caused by the Audigy's WDM drivers but VIA's AGP drivers.

Since it's not hardware related, I assume here that there is some sort of communication problem between EU2's sound code, DirectX and the sound driver. As EU2 is the only game that exhibited this odd behaviour, my guess is that some of EU2's sound related code is not fully DirectX compliant.

Well - I could say why buy an audigy (or conversely a 6 ch integrated audio motherboard) when you already had a great set up :D

I believe your problem will be linked to the Audigy and the Nforce sound fighting over the resources.

Things you could try.

1. Go to integrated peripherals in the bios and disable (not set to auto) the AC 97 sound

2. If this fails then disable the integrated sound card in control panel / system

3. Install directx 9.0a. Check Directx to ensure directx correctly recognises both cards. Try uninstalling/reinstalling one of the directx drivers. Check to see if you have latest Nvidia Nforce drivers (they do get updated VERY frequently)

4. Check the Nforce audio softare to see if you can / have disabled the sound there.

4. There is a bios update dated 15 May for your motherboard. Check the read me to see if it adresses any sound issues that you recognise.

I actually bought it for my old computer in hopes of fixing this problem, but with no luck. I figured I might aswell move it to this computer since I had bought it only a few months ago. I don't really now alot about sound cards or anything, but I figured an actual sound card would be better then the onboard.

Thanks for the suggestions, maybe I will get around to trying it some time. Frankly, though, I don't really care anymore. :p I don't think I'll ever get these games working hitch-free. I was just amazed that I have the exact same problem with my new computer.

Okay, sorry for the delay, MrT is away for awhile.

jpd's suggestions have helped other users, with this problem.

I have had exactly the same issue arise. I upgraded my SB Live! to a SB Audigy I Gamer and I started having this exact problem with the sound effects in game. My only question now would be: where can I get the WMD drivers and what nasty side effects can I expect from installing them?

I don't know about the original Audigy, but my Audigy II came with WDM drivers out of the box. In fact, if you perform a default installation, the WDM drivers will be installed. The VxD drivers are optional. WDM drivers the type of drivers that win2k normally uses, but can also be used in win98se and winme, if properly supported by the supplier (which is Creative here)

I had the VxD's installed in an attempt to get rid of freezing problems when playing Age of Mythology, before I had figured out that it was in fact the VIA 4in1 drivers that were the root of the problem. After I found that out, I hadn't bothered with switching back to the Audigy's WDM drivers, as everything worked as it should, until I started playing EU2 again.

I notice at the time that EU2's sound problem didn't occur when I booted with win2k, while it had problems when I booted with win98. It took me a little time to figure out that the only difference between the working and non working setup was the Audigy drivers. In win2k you don't have a choice, and are forced to use the WDM drivers. So I tested the theory, switched (in win98) back to the WDM drivers, and sure enough, the problems were gone.

Have you tried the Creative site?

Yes, I have. They only have the VxD based driver available for the Audigy.

It's not a big deal. I've gotten used to playing EU2 without the sound effects, but I'm hoping that I won't have the same problem with Victoria once it comes out.

Cheers.

Maybe e-mail their tech support and describe the problem, they may e-mail you the drivers.

If you can believe this, it wasn't till I read this thread that I even realised the sounds weren't happening for me much :)

I fixed it by starting dxdiag and turning the sound acceleration down to 'basic' (the second thingy across).

Always worth a try first.
