If CK2 is available on Gamersgate then NC2 will be, it is kind of rational.

It should be but it isn't. Johan said that they were not sure if they would release NC2 on gamersgate. Paradox would prefer to release all on steam only. CK2's gamersgate version exists only because people asked for it (like i did and therefore i bought it).

People didn't exactly just ask for it.

They'd threatened to never buy Paradox games again, the entire forum was filled with anti steam posts and pro steam posts for a couple of days.

I'm not sure what exactly made paradox change their minds. But I suppose it's a good thing to have the game covered in other markets.

Steam only though would have been more cost effective for Paradox.

Definitelly not a good idea to only sell in one venue (or only patch through one like seems to be the case with Skyrim). Even as a dedicated Ageod player I'm unlikely to buy at Steam. It's not just recent facts that matter in such issues, it's also a matter of trust. Many players don't trust Steam, there's hardly anything they can do now that will change such opinion anymore. Accordingly Steam-only only makes sense if Steam can compensate the editor for losses inccured due to not selling under another scheme...

Steam, on principle, should never be the only place to buy. The foundations of both Democracy and Capitalism depend on it. This is said by a Steam only purchaser.

It will never be a Steam only purchase, even if it was to require Steam to play. I for instance buy games from GamersGate even if they require Steam to play them.

That's just as bad as it won't calm the worries of the no-steam players, in some way it might even be worse if it's not immediately made clear that the game requires use of steam even if sold at another venue (which was apparently the case with Skyrim, at least it's the reason I didn't buy that game)...

Don't get me wrong I hate steam but it is not going to stop me from playing paradox games, other games yes. I purchase through Gamersgate to make me feel better and not pay steam.
