Sorry if it sounds stupid, but, what exactly is the added value of this mod compared to regular HIP? just cosmetic? province redrawing? something else?

Marinakis map is a real topographical map with mountain heights and rivers, no just an aproximated map like vanilla or HIP map. Every city is exactly located as in a real map. Or so I believe :p

Well to be fair, the city thing is only true of most in the Eastern Med, East Africa, Middle East and Iran, my favorite areas. But yeah, holistically, the changes are largely cosmetic.
 
For those interested -

In the next release I will include some decent upgrades to Eastern Anatolia/Cilician Armenia. Its a region which always bothered me in that the region is suppose to be a cluster **** of mountain passes (Which is why Heraklios retreated behind it in the 7th century). In addition to that, Melitene was historically viewed as a critically important choke point in Eastern Anatolia; I feel my changes emphasize that.
