v1.6
  • Up late, making sure to get this update out. Was hoping to hold it back until JD drops ('cause that's going to be a pretty hefty update, what with the map changes), but whatever.

    v1.6
    • Various tweaks to ensure full compatibility with CKII+ v4.06.8
    • Brand new co-crowning mechanic for Holy Roman/Carolingian Emperors with feudal elective succession
    • Added title localisation for communal realms
    • Fixed an issue where Indian provinces were not part of any region
    • If the Carolignian Empire becomes a different empire due to religion change/Roman Empire restoration, the new empire uses Treaty of Verdun mechanics
    • Sufficiently large dukes can now protest if the Carolingian Emperor attempts to break the Treaty of Verdun
    • Prevented AI controlled Otto from using the Carolingian reconquest CB, as he loves to invade Italy and break the story events
    • Creating the Carolingian Empire should now provide the Kingdom of Aquitaine if it doesn't already exist (which should hopefully reduce some border gore)
    • Nerfed the absorb-Burgundy-into-the-HRE events: the event that fires due to the King of Burgundy having no close heir now has a greater MTTH, and the event for helping out the King in exchange for being made heir now has more dependencies
    • Fixed even more issues from barony-level communal titles and their auto-changing succession laws
    • Further reduced the chance of the AI adopting communal administration with the rule set as "unrestricted"
    • The Carolingian Empire can now only be formed if the Byzantine Emperor is "unworthy" in the Pope's eyes: either a child, a woman, uncrowned, excommunicated, a heretic, having their title contested, impious or just plain hated by the Pope himself
    • Fixed a typo in the code that would prevent the Treaty of Verdun from being revokable
    • The Kingdom Lockout law should now no longer be auto-revoked from the Carolingian Empire
    • Fixed the descriptions in the Peasant Discontent modifiers to reflect the actual revolt risk they give
    • Split the rules relating to the communal mechanics into their own rule group
    • Filled out the histories of some titles in the Lower-Lorraine area
    • Fixed an issue with the event where rebellious peasants rise up to overthrow a communal ruler that was preventing the actual war itself from firing
    • If Berengar or his heir captures Rome before being defeated by Otto the second time, Rome itself returns to the Pope's control upon their defeat
    • Changed the target of Berengar/his heir after their first defeat by Otto from d_latium to c_roma
    • Fixed an issue that would occasionaly cause a newly-formed HRE/Carolingian Empire from not having the Chalcedonian Pope as a religious head
    • Added in some failsafes and maintenance events that should hopefully help with a bug where newly-independent peasant revolters against communal realms end up with "no_government" as their government type
    • When formed, the HRE now starts with free investiture, and the AI will never change it to Papal of their own volition
    • Otto in 962 starts with enough prestige and piety to co-crown his son

A couple of things with this update.

Firstly, I've made it so that the Carolingian Empire can only be found if the Byzantine Emperor is "unworthy" in the eyes of the Pope. For the Eastern Roman Emperor to be unworthy, they have to be one of the following:
    • A child
    • A woman
    • Uncrowned
    • Excommunicated
    • A heretic (not Chalcedonian, Catholic or Orthodox)
    • Impious (piety less than 0)
    • On really bad terms with the Pope
Obviously that's a fair few conditions, and in every test game I ran the AI was able to form the CE eventually, so hopefully this will just be a bit more historical and add some more strategy, rather than being obnoxious.

Secondly, and more importantly, this update adds a brand new mechanic in the form of Imperial Co-Crownings, which is intended to, hopefully, make the HRE in its early days a bit more powerful and interesting to play, and ensure more dynastic continuity (as it had historically). Here, in a nutshell, is how it works:

    1. A Holy Roman/Carolingian Emperor that is crowned by the Pope and whose Empire has feudal elective succession can choose a close family member to co-crown as King of the Romans via targetted decision
    2. In order to take the decision, the Emperor need to have the monetary cost of a standard Papal coronation, plus 2x the prestige and 1.5x the piety (2000 and 300 respectively)
    3. After choosing a potential co-crownee, the Imperial vassals will be asked to vote on whether to support the Emperor's choice, or reject it
    4. If a simple majority votes in favour, the co-crownee is officially crowned as King of the Romans, a trait which gives them a slight boost to their prestige
    5. Upon the death of the Emperor, the co-crowned character inherits the Empire (and any titles in the former Emperor's demesne), just as if they had been elected via standard feudal elective rules
    6. However, if a majority of vassals vote against the Emperor's chosen heir, not only does the co-crowning not take place, but a precedent is set that the Emperor cannot simply choose their own heir: the ability to co-crown is no longer available to all future Emperors
    7. If a co-crowned character dies before the Emperor, the latter can choose to try and have another close family member co-crowned. However, the Imperial vassals are slightly less likely to support candidates if another was co-crowned in the past, so caution must be used
    8. If the Imperial titles is usurped, the character that was previously co-crowned loses their status as King of the Romans, and will no longer inherit the Empire upon the new Emperor's death (unless elected normally)
    9. Once a character has been co-crowned, this cannot be reversed unless they die, so some strategy may be involved when choosing your heir
    10. Co-crowning cannot be done if the Pope has won the Investiture Controversy, and the Concordat of Worms will similarly force an end to the ability to co-crown. Conversely, an Imperial victory in the IC will restore the ability to co-crown if it had been lost previously
    11. The Statutum in Favorem Principum will also end co-crownings. The history files also reflect both this and the above point

This new mechanic has been in the works for quite some time (probably circa v1.5.3), and while I'm kinda glad to finally to get something out, I can't help but feel that it's not quite finished. It certainly needs more balance-testing for a start, and there are a few more bits and pieces I'd like to add to it. For example, events for the new King of the Romans to try and get more power at the expense of the Emperor, adding the necessary flags and traits to characters in the history files, and adding more factors that influence whether vassals vote for or against the proposed candidate.

Also, worth noting that even if a character is co-crowned, the succession tab on the laws screen will show no sign of this and the actual feudal elective mechanics (opinion modifiers etc) will remain unchanged. Unfortunately this is hard-coded, and not something I can do anything about. Obviously this will most likely cause confusion, so I'll probably add a decision the player can take that will ping an event to the character that's been co-crowned for easy reference.

Also, a few changes in the history files in here, so if you play with the bookmarks only, be sure to re-download. Checksums are EDJF without India and AQWO with.

    v1.6.1 BETA
  • Any chance that we get a release today now that beta 3 is out?

    Fiiiiiiiine...

EDIT: Actually I should really make clear that I changed the names of some of the files in this update, so it's IMPORTANT THAT YOU DELETE OLD MOD FILES BEFORE INSTALLING THE NEW ONES. Otherwise you're probably going to get some strange things happening, and you probably don't want that.

    • Update to ensure compatibility with CKII v2.8 and CKII+ v4.07 BETA 3
    • Massive overhaul of Treaty of Verdun mechanics: now uses a unique tributary type rather than direct vassalage, and the "Partitioned Empire" modifier has been removed
    • Breaking the Treaty of Verdun now requires a Papal crowning and low crown authority or higher
    • Overhaul of the Guelph and Ghibelline mechanics: any Italian ruler who has the Emperor as top liege can choose their allegiance
    • Added a few new Guelph/Ghibelline events involving vassals of vassals
    • The Carolingian Empire can now be formed if the Byzantine Emperor is Orthodox
    • Fixed a major bug where the Concordat of Worms event wouldn't fire for the Emperor (thus preventing the Investiture Controversy from truly ending)
    • Added the province of Perugia, split off from Spoleto
    • When forming the Carolingian Empire, Perugia goes to the Pope, rather than Spoleto
    • Three new Grand Duchies (and associated decisions) for a HRE with land in France: Burgundy, Normandy and Aquitaine
    • New Grand Duchies added in CKII+ v4.07 have decisions to raise them, except Sicily
    • Grand Duchy of Sicily has been removed, but the Kingdom of Sicily can be raised in its stead
    • Gave the Magyars some event troops in 950
    • Fixed a mistake in the code that would cause the truce from Otto's first war against Berengar to only last a year
    • Fixed a bug where adopting Imperial Administration with communal vassals would cause them to change government type
    • Nerfed the revolt risk for the "Tondrakian Stronghold" modifier
    • New colours, icons and frames for the Imperial Bogomilist and Imperial Muslim government types
    • Major changes to the history files, mainly in the 1000 bookmark
    • Deleted duplicate Ziyarids
    • Expanded Istria again, landlocking Krain
    • In 769, d_burgundy is de-jure k_burgundy (forming the Carolingian Empire makes it de-jure k_france as per usual)
    • Fixed a bug where forming the Margraviate of Brandenburg would cause its subsequent holder to become independent
    • In order to form the Margraviate of Brandenburg, the decision-taker must now be independent
    • The Carolingian Empire now converts to the HRE in EUIV (CONVERTER IS CURRENTLY INCOMPATIBLE AND SO THIS HASN'T BEEN FULLY TESTED YET)
    • Otto's first victory against Berengar should now properly make the latter a tributary of the former, even without Horse Lords active
    • Gave King Eadred of England a poopy butt
    • Muslims can only go on the Hajj if Mecca is unoccupied
    • Seljuks are now Empire-tier in the 1066 start and later
    • Added major-triggers to "major" events

I'm going to keep emphasising that this is in Beta, because the reasons that I held off from releasing an update to coincide with CKII+ v4.07 BETAs 1 and 2 still apply. Maybe hold off on any long games until a more stable CKII+ release (and subsequent RT compatch).

Woth noting is that two major unfinished things are:
    A) the EUIV converter is incompatible
    and
    B) The missing Tibetan rulers in the 950 and 962 bookmarks still haven't been added, as I'm still waiting to see what CKII+ does in the region for the 1000 bookmark.

Anyway, there's a lot to talk about in this update, but I'll stick to the overhauls to two existing mechanics.

I already teased one of the big changes earlier in the thread, and sure enough it was quickly figured out that the Treaty of Verdun mechanics now use the new 2.8 tributary mechanics. How it works is like this:
    • The Carolingian Empire starts out as the same ol' big-white-blob from vanilla CKII+
    • If the Treaty of Verdun happens, however, all king-vassals are made into tributaries. This is the default situation in the 867 start
    • The tributary type is a unique vassal-in-name only one, giving the Emperor a small boost in prestige per king and nothing else. The kings themselves are de-facto independent and can declare war on each other (and the Emperor themself) freely
    • Upon succession, the "stay loyal or declare independence" event fires for the tributaries. Any direct king-vassals the Emperor has obtained will break off and become tributaries themselves, before the aforementioned event fires (so that they receive it as well)
    • The Carolingian Empire collapses if it no longer has at least one king-level vassal with at least 10 count titles in their realm (but can be preserved if the Emperor's direct realm is 100 count titles or larger)
    • In addition, the "Partitioned Empire" modifier has been removed entirely, which also means that crown authority, as well as other laws it affected, can be changed freely
    • The "Break the Treaty of Verdun" decision now requires a Papal Crowning and low crown authority or higher. Doing so now causes all your tributary-kings to become direct vassals (though like before, they will almost certainly begin to plot to reinstate the previous status-quo)
Hopefully, this will help to convey the "Empire in name only" nature of the Carolingian Empire after 843. The whole "partitioned empire" thing was always a compromise I was never happy with, and I'm glad to be rid of it.

Though that's assuming the new mechanics work fine. I've literally been testing it since 2.8 dropped, and so far the only problem I've found is that when new kingdom titles are created via electoral gavelkind succession, the new kings are automatically independent (as in, not tributaries of the Emperor), but still be on the look out for any strangeness with the new mechanics.

Or, y'know, point out if the new mechanics are unfun. I could be way off the mark on this one after all...

The other overhaul in this update is to the Guelph/Ghibelline mechanics. In short, rather than direct Imperial vassals, any landed Italian character in Italy who has the Emperor as their top liege can choose their side, from the lowliest barons to the loftiest kings. Given that there is a hefty -50 opinion penalty for conflicting traits, it should mean that Italian politics after the Investiture Controversy are a little bit more turbulent than before.

Choosing between Guelph and Ghibelline now also applies opinion modifiers to both the Emperor and the Pope, based on which side you choose.

There might be a bug with these mechanics though: while doing general testing, I noticed that the above-mentioned opinion modifiers would be applied multiple times, not at all or alongside the opposite modifiers that should've been removed when the new one was applied. Some of this is caused by the way opinion modifiers are applied (often they don't show up right away, and require a few in-game days before they appear), but occasionally it was clear that there was a bug.

Of course, as soon as I started explicitly testing for this bug and watching like a hawk to try and catch it, it stopped appearing. Completely. I have no idea what the deal is, but if anybody catches it and can explain what caused it, that'll be much appreciated.

Thanks and enjoy (and remember that this is a beta)

Also, increasingly feel the need to point out that I'm not a "he", but am worried that a rather unpleasant derail will happen if I reveal I'm a "they" rather than a "she".
Not singling out or attacking anybody for the record, just saying...

    v1.6.1 BETA 2
  • Any ETA on an update?

I mean, I can put out a second Beta, sure. The EUIV converter works with this one, so really the only thing left to do is fill in that Tibettan history, and I'm still waiting to see what the CKII+ devs do to fill in the gaps in the 1000 bookmarks before I do anything substantial.
(Unless I get bored of waiting, at which point I'll do it myself)

    • Various tweaks to ensure compatibility with CKII+ v4.07 BETA 5
    • Slightly redid the Treaty of Meerssen events, so that there is now a delay between the titles changing hands and the initial event firing (which fixes a couple of issues)
    • With Communal Administration rules set to "Restricted", AI will only adopt communal administration if they openly follow the relevant religions
    • Cleaned up title history files, deleting files that were unchanged from vanilla CKII+ and reducing the filesize of this mod a bit
    • Expansion of Bulgaria's borders between 950 and 1000
    • Massive changes to East Africa:
      • Alodia is now an independent state
      • Makuria reduced to duke-level
      • The Zagwe dynasty now appears much, much later and with reduced land
      • Territory of the former Kingdom of Axum is split between Alodia and Semien from 960 to 1137
      • After 1137, the Medri Bahri state is now independent in Eritrea
      • The provinces of Gondar and Antalo have switched positions
      • The provinces of Akordat and Barka have switched positions
      • d_axum is now de-jure k_abyssinia
    • De-jure Kingdom of Allemania (Swabia) in 769: acts smiliarly to the Kingdom of Saxony, in that forming the Carolingian Empire reduces it to titular status (and destroys the title if the new Emperor holds it)
    • New decision icon for forming the Carolingian Empire
    • Added some ai_check_intervals to decisions
    • Fixed the dynasty of rulers in Sindh (historical Habbaris being presented as Soomras)
    • EUIV converter should now be working

As you might notice, I did a lot of changes in East Africa in this one, which is a region I've never really felt was done particularly well in CKII+ (in my opinion, Vanilla actually handles it better). Unfortunately, I found out upon starting work on it that information on the region during the period is kinda... spotty.

For example, there is no real consensus on when the Zagwe dynasty first showed up or when its founder, Mara Takla Haymanot, lived. I mean, there is literally an almost 250 year margin of error. In the end, though, I decided to go for the later date of 1137, as this is also the time the Medri Bahris in Eritrea (who have also been added in this update) are first attested, so I can justify it as a general-breakdown-of-centralised-power-in-the-region kind of thing. I decided to take the claim that Mara married a daughter of Dil Na'od (the last king of Axum) less literally and made her a descendant of the latter instead. After all, claims like that were frequently used as legitimacy-boosting propaganda during the period.

However, this also meant that the period between 1137 and the collapse of the Kingdom of Axum (around 960) had to be accounted for. The northern territory of the former kingdom I gave to Alodia (Some sources suggest that their territory stretched as far as the Red Sea), the southern I gave to Semien, due to some sources saying that the descendents of Queen Gudit ruled over former Axum before the rise of the Zagwes. Mainly though I justified the latter with the fact that a larger, stronger Jewish state potentially leads to more interesting gameplay stuff.

Anyway, that's some of the basics of the changes to East African history. Obviously it's kinda rough, so if anybody has any objections, be sure to let me know and I'll look into it.

(But just in case, do you think there's any chance the mod may have created a portal between China and Brittany, making Western Protectorate armies and Chinese adventurers show up in the Far West?)

I shouldn't think so, but I'll give it a look either way.

    v1.6.1 BETA 3
  • Anyway, BETA 3, 'cause I know a bunch of you are interested in that kind of thing. Should be fully compatible with v4.07 BETA 6.

    • Changes to ensure compatibility with CKII+ v4.07 BETA 6
    • Filled out missing history of Tibet in 950 and 962 bookmarks, as well as the new Saharan provinces
    • General history cleanup in the region between Mesopotamia and Khorasan
    • Changed the colour of e_seljuk_turks to better differentiate it from the new e_arabia colour
    • New "Off" value on the "Communal Administration" rule, which effectively removes communal government from the game
    • With "Communal Administration" set to "Unrestricted", the AI will now never adopt communal administration unless they'd be able to with the rule set to "Restricted"
    • Fixed a bug where changing from feudal to communal and visa versa wouldn't change the government type

Half of the changes are to be more in line with the recent CKII+ map and history changes, the other are tweaks to communal government. For example, it turns out that (relatively) recent changes to how government is validated in game, while improving performance, also completely broke the events for switching from feudal to communal/communal to feudal. It should hopefully be fixed now, but doing so meant removing some safeguards intended to prevent characters switching government randomly, so with a bit of luck that isn't going to cause any problems.

I mean, I haven't had much time for long-scale testing, so "a bit of luck" seems almost generous...

I also 'fixed' an issue with the communal government mechanics from a meta perspective. Over time I came to feel that communal government was a bit out of the scope of this mod's general HRE-theme. I was tempted to split it off entirely as a seperate submod, but unfortunately the two mods would've be incompatible with each other, so I kept it in despite misgivings.

Now, though, I've added a new value on the Communal Administration rule that allows you to turn off the communal government type. It blocks the communal administration law from being enacted under any circumstances, and if the game begins on a start-date where the Qarmatians are around, they are put onto feudal administration. The "communal uprisings" that occur with the other rule are largely unaffected if that rule is set to "on", but the leader of the Qarmatian uprising will remain feudal.

This means if you don't like the communal mechanics, don't want to risk the instability they can potentially cause (despite my best efforts), or just don't want them in your HRE mod experience, you can now simply turn them off and they'll trouble you no more. Basically, Communal Government is now much more like a separate submod that, while not officially part of RT, comes free with the package (which is also free but shut up).

    Anyway, enjoy.

I know the betas have been saying v1.6.1, but given how huge the combined changelog ended up being and the kind of stuff that was on there, I decided to just skip to v1.7. I hope you're all not too upset.

For the record, there were so many history files that said they had been modified since the last CKII+ update but hadn't (please CKII+ devs. Please no more map/history changes) that I eventually gave up trying to find which ones had actually been changed. A few quick glances didn't show anything weird, but if you do find any historical anomalies (randomly independent counties, characters holding titles they probably shouldn't, titles with no holder, stuff like that), please let me know.

Also, checksum for the bookmark-only mod is WTZM.

    • Minor tweaks to ensure full compatibility with CKII+ v4.07.1
    • Fixed an issue where winning the Investiture Controversy by vassalising the Pope would result in multiple event pop-ups and a subsequent tanking of Catholic moral authority
    • Gave the province of Van another holding slot
    • Reverted Rugen back to feudal in earlier starts. In addition, the Rani (Rugen and Rostock) are independent between 867 and 1066, and start out with some event troops

    Enjoy!

    v1.7.2
  • Oh hey, it's an update. Sorry about the delay, but as I mentioned earlier in the thread, v1.7.1 was borderline compatible with CKII+ v4.07.2, so I figured I would take my time to make a few non-compatch related changes.

Mainly to the history files, but whatever.

    v1.7.2
    • Very small tweaks to ensure full compatibility with CKII+ v4.07.2
    • Fixed some issues where events that were set to be fired from title changes either fired multiple times or didn't fire at all
    • Fixed a problem where some kings of Strathclyde were the wrong culture (and were thus getting the "wrong holding type" alert)
    • Made the children of Olaf (king of Northumbria in 950) his dynasty to prevent early game-overs
    • Changed the culture of early Fatimid rulers to maghreb_arabic, and gave them some event troops in the 950 and 962 starts
    • A great deal of historical changes in Persia, Khorasan and Khwarizm in the 867 and 888 start dates
    • In the history files, switched k_khwarizm with k_turan, and switched k_qarakhnid to k_khwarizm
    • Removed k_qarakhnid, but gave its colour to k_khwarizm
    • Added historical wars to the bookmark-only version of the mod
    • Fixed the Ghazanvid conquest of the Saffarids in 1000
    • Mazadki characters in 769 (namely the counts in Esfahan, Qohistan and Chaghaniyan) are now communal at game start
Checksum for the bookmark-only mod is KYZM

    Have fun!

EDIT: Had the realisation that with the removal of k_qarakhnid, saves made before this new version will be incompatible if k_qarakhnid exists in it (its default name is "Khiva", and it's the kingdom-level title the Samanids start with in 950 and 962 if you're not sure). If your save did not have k_qarakhnid, it should be fine.

    v1.7.3
  • Update time. Basically little more than a compatch for the new version of CKII+, but I'm sure none of you mind too much.

It does mean I don't have much to say about it though, so here's the download link and the changelog.

    DOWNLOAD v1.7.3

    Checksum: NANA

    • Changes to ensure full compatibility with CKII+ v4.07.3
    • Otto now starts with the crowned trait in 950
    • Fixed an issue that was causing missing localisations in the event that fires upon first founding the HRE
    • Fixed the temple of Gorgora in Gondar having the wrong localisation, and therefore never having a holder
    • Cleaned up northern Africa a bit in 1066

Checksum for the bookmark-only mod is QNJQ.

    Enjoy!

    v1.7.4
  • Ding dong bing bong it's compatch time

    DOWNLOAD v1.7.4.1
    Checksum: EOPR

    v1.7.4.1
    • Tweaks to ensure full compatibility with CKII+ v4.07.5
    • Fixed an issue that caused inheritance of the HRE to go to a seemingly random character if the former HREmperor died after failing to co-crown an heir
    v1.7.4
    • Changes to ensure full compatibility with CKII+ v4.07.4
    • Fixed Tondrakian Uprising events firing multiple times
    • Dwin is now Tondrakian between 955 and 1050
    • Otto no longer has both "Crowned" and "Crowned by Pope" traits in 962
    • Fixed rulers being tribal despite owning feudal holdings

(Extremely disappointed to lose the top-tier checksum that v1.7.3 had...)

Checksum for the bookmark-only mod is RZWW. Be aware, however, that during testing, I got a CTD on startup, and while it seemed to be a one-off that I've been unable to replicate, it's worth keeping in mind.

    v1.7.6
  • New version, coming at'cha.

    DOWNLOAD v1.7.6.1
    Checksum: MRKF

This one is literally just a compatch, so there's not much point in posting a changelog. I know the changelog is the highlight for so, so many of you, but you'll have to make-do without I'm afraid. Sorry.

I've also updated the bookmark-only mod to account for a few little history changes in CKII+. New checksum is QKNU.

UPDATE: Has been compatched again for CKII+ v4.07.8. Download links and checksums have been updated accordingly.
