Re bringing nations to the Comintern: alas, that’s something I have to leave to the Soviets: it takes 2 leadership points (almost a quarter of my entire amount) to influence one nation, and its a slow process. :( I just don’t have the spare capacity to be able to do it, much as I’d like to.

As you say, in the end we need either Japan to do something stupid (like Pearl Harbor) or the US to get tired of waiting and pitch in.

For Turkey, at least our slice of the war is going ok :)!

We had a tradition of the commander of a tank being able to name it - it would be painted onto the side (just a small ‘nameplate’). I was in A Squadron, so it had to start with an A. You guessed it - the first one I named myself was Attila. I thought it suitable for a tank. ;)

wow cruel game mechanics! yes, let's hope either the soviets collect themselves, the americans wake up or the japanese to crap the bed

that sounds really fun :D what was the model of the tank?

I was somehow sure you guys had some M60s but a quick wiki search says otherwise. Turkish Army still has some Leopards but they are looking to phase them out some day. They look cool though :)

I continue to applaud the Turkish Armed forces for their renewed efforts for the common cause, especially those men flying obsolete Hawk III biplanes in the face of well-protected Ju-86s.

Romania is worrying, but not yet disastrous. KROKODIL is doing great, and KURT SÜRÜSÜ is moving forward decently well. Let's hope you can achieve something, capture some enemy units, some supplies, before the big picture catches up with you and you need to pull your troops out.

Interesting effect with the Eng... I've never seen that happen before, though I don't often license-build things, and haven't done so at all for more than a year (The British won't let the SU buy some of their super-Destroyers...)

At least, the patriotic Front further north is becoming more stable. In the Far East things could go wrong very quickly though. With that last province the Japs captured in Mongolia, they are just north of the last Mongolian VP in Uliastay. If the Japanese take it, Mongolia will become Japanese territory, or worse, an Axis puppet... this would be a significant disruption...

I appreciate the beautiful rendition of the 'song of the Volga Boatmen' you so graciously added, and Guildenstern's surfing pictures do remind us that some places are still at peace... for now... at least he's enjoying it while it lasts...

This was back in the early 80s. Before them, we had Centurions, then some years back we changed to M1 Abrams. The Leopard was an excellent tank - very fast across country, fun to operate. But these days it would be badly outmatched, even with a few upgrades.

Thank you. Yes, both Romania and the Far East are concerns - one is out of my hands, but the other, we may need to do something. Thought Skitalec might light the Red Army Choir ;)

Indeed. They're hoping more for the show and impetus, not the tactical and operational 'contribution. "Best left to the professionals, what?" And in this ATL, none of the after-the-fact Churchill legend applies. He could be worse (in his own way) than Chamberlain - we will have to wait and see. ;)

In fact, he probably shall be worse since the easy bits of the war for GB, taking out the enemy navies and securing North Africa have a) been accomplished already, and b) gone horribly wrong. He's going to have to dp spme dramatic reorganisation to get wherever the army is (please tell me it hasbt been disbanded or not called up) to Egypt sharpish. He might even want to go himself, considering his colonial record.

Re saluting and snipers: spot on! No saluting at the front.

Its even less of a thing when you aren't infantry and thus probably have both hands full most of the time. Even on a training and reserve level there are imbecilles who dont mind screaming their and your poistion and ranks away if you arent parade quality at all times.

Given his career so far (in game and indeed prior to it) it's not like he has a lot to prove to middle-ranking officers. :)

Many horror stories abound about middle officers. I'd say abolish the lot but then they'd be lower positions where theyc ould do even more damage.

Kelebek will be back when the action heats up in the West again. Cennet too

Anything's possible. Depends on hospital wifi and lucidity of course:)
Kelebek's pribably run a few casinos in its time. Probably more legitimate than mobster ones though.

I wonder if we can do the Italian Job or Oceans Eleven after the Godfather, and steal all thst Nazi gold out of Switzerland?

Will BJ Guildenstern have his idyllic sojourn in Hawaii rudely interrupted? Is he doomed to have war chase him no matter where he goes? I'm as much in the dark as you are.

Forgot he was there...hmm...alright. Turkish intelligence may have a thing or two to say to him.

The Turkish claim to be descendant of the original Huns

So does everyone else east of the Rhine. Comes with the territory of having a nomadic successful tribal history non one is quite sure where they came from. Not sure why any leader would claim them though, considering most hun leaders died either horribly or unexpetedly, ruining their empires in the process.

I had a bit of something similar happen with the Germans in my AAR game: Germany attempted to procure six destroyer groups in two stacks of three from the Japanese, but they didn't show up as anything. I canceled it and stayed away from going down that path again, for fear of wasting what little money I had.

Fortunately, the license only cost $30-odd and I have $3,000+ in the kitty. The main pain is the delay in starting the next order, but it should only be a few days. I will let the blank unit run for now, as it doesn't seem to be costing any IC (I had played past it, so didn't bother going back to either try again or do something different, and I really don't like to replay turns at all for this game - it's a point of honour). I may try again and see if it does the same thing and if it does, discard (without playing the rest of the game) as a little experiment.

A bit of shameless cross-promotion here: I have started a new AAR (another of my little side-projects) using the old EU Rome game! It promises to be short, sharp and quick-fire. For those that are familiar, a little more in the 'Quick and Dirty' style of my HOI3 France AAR, but this time being played live rather than off saves.

The reference is in my signature and also below. Please drop on by - I'd love to see you! Forget about Mussolini and these Fascist Italian wannabe Roman Empire successors: watch the original and best as it tries to grow from a small-middle sized regional power into the biggest of them all :)

Sweet! :D I think there are only two EU Rome AARs currently posting (including mine). The other started recently too. A quiet little corner of AARLand. :)

Well it has taken some time, but now read up to and including chapter 29, and ready to being hammer and anvil.

I loved The Apotheosis of Şükrü Âli Ögel. A very very engaging vignette, and utterly believable.

Thank you so much! I think The Apotheosis of Şükrü Âli Ögel was when I really started to branch out a little bit more, given this was my first AAR venture. I will never match the full narrative style (or accomplishment) of some of our great narrative storytellers, but I do like to throw a little bit in along the way, in a game that doesn’t naturally foster it from the gameplay alone.

Please feel free (as you have done above, for which I thank you) to comment on any aspects of the back catalogue you feel like do so with along the way - as I’ve mentioned elsewhere, I not only don’t mind that, I actively welcome it and am happy to engage on any past chapters, answer questions (without spoiling), etc. :)

All: AAR on temp hold while I try to sort out a fix for a nasty bug: that problem I had with that engineer license build looks like it is now happening for all license builds. That is, they come up with that weird zombie-looking icon, don't build, don't appear on the production queue, etc. Given my production and tech strategy for the game (ie all advanced armour and planes reliant on Soviet licenses) this is a serious problem, so I need to dig into it.

Rest assured, it won't kill the AAR, but I suspect will take a bit of running down. :( I will do a bit of testing of previous saves first (ie go back to the last one I can find where licenses worked all right, run through and see if it happens again). I'll also do a search for any previous bug reports and fixes etc (a quick 10 min search just now hasn't turned up anything useful).

In the meantime, if any of you have knowledge of this one, or the most likely method for tracking down explanations/fixes, please post. I haven't had need to search for HOI3 bug reports/forum etc before: I'm hoping there is such a beast, even if not officially supported. The Path to Glory is littered with many potholes, but we will persevere! :)

You might be able to dig into the save files themselves and just modify it to what it is supposed to be? Problematic, but instead of bug hunting you could just edit the save file.

seems like a data corruption issue but i don't know why. i don't own the game so cannot dig in the bug forums but I advised him via PM to just backup the saves and reinstall the game. I doubt this is a problem with the save game.

Thanks guys - I think I’m ok now, but will do more if I need to - I’ve done a little save editing, though not a great deal. Far more familiar with modding Civ4 ;). Will consult the hive mind if it keeps recurring.

Caught up! That’s some good old counter attacking you’ve pulled off there and kudos to your outdated airwing too

Hope the bug gets sorted as this is too good an AAR to fall by the wayside
