Using his sword as an oar, Robert began to paddle towards the burning ship, planning to use the fire to warm his clothing...
That must be a big sword! :p
Smart thinking to dry by the fire.

Good to see my comments actually have an impact :D and luckily he still has his sword. ;)

Nothing wrong with your action scenes me thinks, however if you are serious about it, I want to give it a try. I don't have that much time at the moment so it'll probably be a onetime appearance, else I would just slow down your AAR and I don't want that.

Maybe it's a tame shark? :D

Of course.

It is a pet shark, trained from infancy by a time-travelling Juvenal Quentis. The shark time-travelled WITH Juvenal forward into the age of imperialism, then travelled BACK, bringing the pirates with it. Also, Juvenal taught the shark how to write, which is how the shark was able to write the message to Annelies which said, specifically,

"Am hungry. Please send Robert."

With time travel everything is possible, so why not? Now the question is, what else are the guys from the future up to? Can you come up with even crazier things? next time at the ACA's, you'd get my vote for Favorite Narrative AND Favorite Comedy! ;)

Hehe. Actually, I pretty much know step-for-step exactly what the guys in the future are doing through this whole story, right up to the finale. It's just a matter of what the "olden days" folks are up to that I'm still deciding...currently trying to find the right "chapter two."

This, of course, is chapter one.

But to answer your question...the people from the future, categorically, have far bigger problems than a mere woman destined to kill them all. :D

OMGOMGOMGOMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO SO SOOOOOOOOOOOO sorry I haven't posted! I've been on vacation! first i went to yearbook camp, then I went to my grandparents' house, &ct. Anyway, these chapters have been grrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeaaatttttttt.... And I do hope you include a time-travelling corn snake! ;) (They are so CUUUTTTTTEEEEEE!) :p

@LordCowles: Ha...appreciate your enthusiasm! Thanks! BTW, I live to serve...so I started researching the corn snake.

Unfortunately, it looks like they only live in the US...so it will have to wait till we get to the discovery of America (assuming it happens in this timeline) before I work it in. :D

By the way, guys, Slinky actually took me up on my offer and is writing a series of action scenes that will be taking place shortly. I wasn't sure what to expect, as he's never actually written an AAR before...

...but he sent me the first one this morning, and it is FANTASTIC.

He gets right down to the most minute detail, while keeping the story going full-pace. I think you guys are really going to like it! And, of course, I'll let you know when we get to the point where I start posting his series.

Incidentally, I've pretty much figured out the second part of this story (which I'm going to try to make more comical, I think, while still keeping within the "reality" I've created here), and have an idea for the third, but I'm struggling to get it to happen in-game. You'll see what I'm talking about when we get there.

AND, I'm excited to report, that even into the third chapter, at least one character you've met so far will still be alive. Possibly more!

I Congratulate You On The Unambiguity Of Your Situation

Late Winter, 1085 - Mediterranean Sea

The shark circled beneath Robert as he tried to scramble up onto the raft. A bump from the predator's nose knocked him off, however, and he slipped back into the sea, swimming through the blood spilling out from where the unconcious marshal's leg used to be.

"CAPTAIN! CAPTAIN HUMPHREY!"

But it was no use, of course. The marshal was in shock. Robert, for all intents and purposes, was on his own.

The shark came at him once more...but this time, it was no mere bump. It was an attack.

Panic rose through his body, but Robert waited until the last possible second...waited until what seemed like thousands of teeth were nearly upon him...and then swung his body around and pulled himself up, so that he was now on top of the shark. He began pounding with his fists, as hard as he could, into the shark's nose and eyes...but it was no use. He needed some kind of weapon...some kind of...

...the sword.

Robert leapt from the shark's back just as the animal dove back under the water, landing hard on the raft. He grabbed the sword, then spun around for the next attack...but none came. The shark was...

...the shark was back. Circling the raft...almost as if it were calculating the best way to attack.

"Captain! Captain, wake up! Please!" Robert shook Humphrey, then began splashing water into his face.

"Wake up! I need your help! I need you..."

And then they were airborne, as the shark hit the raft from below, tossing them both into the sea once more.

Robert clung to his sword, struggling to come back up for air...when he felt two-hundred pounds of dead weight fall on top of him.

Captain Humphrey.

He wasn't strong enough to pull them both up...he had to choose, and quickly. If he let the Captain go, Humphrey would die...but...if he let the sword go, they both would die.

Captain or sword?

Captain or sword?

Captain or sword?

Captain.

Robert released the sword, watching as the heavy iron quickly sank into the darkness. With all of his might, he dragged Captain Humphrey back to the raft. Lifted him up...

...and then he was surrounded by blood.

Robert quickly checked himself...then the captain. They both had scrapes and cuts, of course...and the Captain was missing a leg...but neither one could have lost this mu...

Another wave overcame him, and when Robert reached air again, he found the cause.

The dead shark had floated to the top of the sea, Captain Humphrey's sword sticking out of it's eye.

What the... okay, I knew he could not die after such a bravado, but that is so improbable that I can hardly mention how improbable it is. :p Poor shark.

Hey. You bastards wanted a shark, I gave you a shark.

You want a probable shark, you have to go somewhere else.

:D

Well, I don't know why you asked for help writing action scenes. If this was a movie that would have been an instant classic: a chase scene on a shark!

btw. that sword came in really handy, I think Robert is glad he hauled it all the way with him :D

Hehe. Glad SOME of you liked it.

I actually wrote the sword part BEFORE you guys demanded a shark scene, so it had a different intent...then when you wanted a shark, I thought, "Oh! The sword could be used to keep the shark's mouth open!"

And I wrote the whole scene that way...until I remembered that I was thinking of alligators.

So then I played with various ideas...came up with choosing between the Captain and the sword, and of course he would pick the captain...but if the sword fell to the bottom of the sea, then it was pretty much a helpless situation.

Unless...the sword fell INTO the shark!

Yeah, inprobable...possibly impossible. But there you have it.

Incidentally, I did way too much research into whether a dead shark actually WOULD float, and found a lot of conflicting information. Science says it won't, eye-witnesses say it does. If you prefer, imagine that the shark was raised to the top of the sea by...um...

...a dolphin.

:D

Nice to hear that you put that much research into it. :p And after all, no matter how improbable, it's a rather neat way of killing a shark.

I believe sharks don't float when they are death. A dead body can float to the surface, but that has to do with the decaying process. So both science and the eye-witnesses can be right. At first the shark sinks and (if it has a chanceto decay enough) after a time it floats up again. I am not certain tough.

Unless he was helped by a dolphin which quickly disappeared again and will have no further bearing on the story!

Or a piece of driftwood, a pocket of air escaping the sinking ship, a vulcanic eruption and aliens of course :D
