Assassination? Why, whatever makes you think all of the counts died of assassination?

The counts of Guines:

Baldwin, locked away in a cell by the two people who loved him most, for his own good.

Reinel, died of battle wound while coming home from Crusade.

Osbern, actually survived two assassination attempts. For all we know at this point in the story, he may just be out grocery shopping. :D

And even the others who died...

Ambroos - cause unknown, but as a one-year-old who was only third in line for succession, seems an unlikely candidate for assassination...especially given that the first two in that line are still alive some twenty years later.

Robert (Matilda's father) - Choked to death, in front of a huge crowd of people. Yes, Matilda claims that he was poisoned, but she was only a child when he died, and she also claims it was Osbern who did it, despite the fact that we know he did not (yes, characters lie...but not in their thought processes, and Osbern thought "Murder? I've never killed anyone in my life.") during his fight scene with Matilda. So...the only person who says he was assassinated was a child at the time, and an unreliable one at that.

Ellijnore: Died when the castle collapsed on her. Nearly everyone was severely injured by falling debris...and the collapse could have just as easily killed any of the female characters introduced up to that point.

Humphrey - Burned alive by Muslim army, was never in the line of succession anyway, and therefore an unlikely target.

Shark - True, he was murdered...but it was self-defense, and accidental self-defense at that. Further, he was a shark.

So...who was it again who died from assassination?

Honestly...you guys are so paranoid. Some times I think you all must have hit your heads after chasing a butterfly.

Now that we have a nice list with all deaths, perhaps we can vote on the best death. I am undecided between the shark and Baldwin :D

Maby Osbern married her, so she's now the countess.

And we're not even the poor people in your story.

And allow me to rephrase:

Must every count of Guines meet a grisly end?

Mmm, promising. Hurry with the updates so I can read about them! ;)

Aaaaand...we're back.

:D

Was away from internet land for a while, but now I'm back amongst the civilized. I'll get at least one update...maybe two...today, then back to our normal daily schedule!

Fall, 1088 - Northern France

Robert and Gulsum arrived at the fort, just moments after the messenger. Gulsum raised on eyebrow.

"This is the mighty castle of Guines?"

Robert frowned. "I would have thought it had been rebuilt by now."

The fact that his family still lived in a wooden fort was only the last of a series of troubling signs. Farms were overgrown, the market square was vacant, and the few people they had spotted during the trip looked hagard and hungry.

"Robert of Guines and his lady friend," began the messenger, earning another glare from Gulsum, "may I present...the Countess of Guines!"

Robert turned to get a better view, as the curtain parted...and Matilda de Blount walked into the room.

"You!"

"You have been gone for a very long time Robert. Almost...too long."

"What is the meaning of this? Where is my brother? What has happened to..."

Matilda raised a hand, silencing him. "There is no time. Come quickly."

She started down the hallway, then glanced over her shoulder to see Robert still standing there in shock.

"RUN!" she shouted, finally getting Robert and his foreign woman to chase after her.

@geek_Knight: She was bossy as a child, and age hasn't changed her all that much. :D She and Gulsum will be a fun pair.

@Enewald: Big enough for some sort of receiving room, a hallway, and wherever it is that they're running to. :D

Well, that's a welcome. :p I wonder what's the hurry.

It is good that this is back. I was missing the murderous mayhem :p

Aah, now I feel whole again. Nothing like a good old chapter of The Butterfly Device to brighten your day! :)

Fall, 1088 - Northern France

Matilda stopped just outside of another curtain, and motioned for silence as Robert and Gulsum reached her. Brushing the curtain aside, Robert hesitantly stepped into the royal bedchamber.

Osbern lay beneath an absurd number of blankets, his skin a nearly-transparent shade of white.

"Brother!" Robert rushed to the bedside, as Osbern opened his eyes and tried to smile.

"Robert. You came."

"Of course, brother. Had I known, I would have been here much sooner. What happened?"

"An assassin. It was years ago, shortly after you left, but..."

Osbern raised a feeble hand when Robert spun towards Matilda.

"NO! ...no. It was a Muslim, Robert. Probably sent by the leader of Jerusalem when..."

Osbern's voice trailed off as his eyes went wide.

"My God...they've sent another one. Defend yourself!"

Now it was Robert's turn to reassure his brother. "No...no, brother. She is a Muslim...but she is not an assassin. Her name is Gulsum, and...well...she is my wife."

"A pleasure," Gulsum mumbled wryly.

"You married a Muslim?"

"She is not a normal Muslim, brother. She saved my life in Jerusalem. We would have never taken the city without her." He paused, then stared into Osbern's eyes. "She will be welcome here, brother."

Osbern said nothing for a moment, then nodded. "If you say it, then it is so."

"That easily?"

"You will see why soon enough. Besides...I know something of marrying the woman you love, despite what the wise might say."

"You...you've married, brother?"

"Indeed. And I believe you already know my lovely wife," Osbern said, motioning towards where Matilda stood in the doorway.

"Matilda! But...she is our cousin! That may be the way of Kings and Queens, for political reasons, but there is no advantage here. Only risk, brother."

"We know well the risk, Robert," Matilda replied as she crossed the room to take her husband's hand. "We have been careful...there have been no children."

"No children? But that means..."

"Yes, Robert. Soon...very soon...you will be the Count of Guines."

"No. It is not so. I am a warrior, brother. My place is the battlefield...and therefore, my time is short. You will outlive me, of this I am sure."

"My time is ever shorter, I am afraid. Continue to make me proud, brother. And...Gulsum? Won't you step out of the shadows for a moment?"

Gulsum slowly approached the dying count, and leaned in closer as Osbern whispered something that only she could hear.

Osbern then kissed his wife's hand, closed his eyes, and never opened them again.

The three stood for a moment, looking at the dead count, when Robert finally asked: "What did he say?"

"He said..." Gulsum wiped a tear from her eye. "He said...

"He said 'Welcome to the family."
