OK, that confuses the hell out of me too...

I give up then, just let them rot until the REAL revolution strikes!

Duritz - Harsh but fair. The more I look at French industrial policy the less I understand it, though the regular changes of government don't help.

OK, so the top of the page approaches. As I understand it, part 2 of the Franco-British Industrial update is coming, before we head to the Far East... or north west if you live in Australia... ah, relativity.

Speaking of relativity, stick a note in your pocket to remember to do an update on scientific advances and their practical application in making things go boom - nuclear style! Ta muchly old chap... :)

Dury.

P.S. And before I forget, to all you chaps residing in the British Isles... Vote yes on the AV referendum. NSW and Qld have had it since the 1920's and we're all perfectly wonderful... ish... ;)

I've just spent a total of 24 hours over two days reading up to this point.

This AAR is great. Even though it has nearly killed me reading it :)

Like they say, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Perhaps that should be the slogan for this AAR.

"The Butterfly Effect: Guaranteed to make you stronger if it doesn't kill you first!"

What is this all about?

Great Britain is holding referendum to change their voting system for the House of Commons. At the moment all electorates (House Districts you'd call them) elect the candidate with the most votes where only one person is selected on the ballot paper (first past the post).

The suggested change is to allow more than one vote per ballot paper so you can preference your vote by placing a 1, 2, 3 or however many votes as you'd like next to each candidate in turn. You don't have to but you can if you like. Under this method (Optional Preferential voting, or Alternate voting) preferences are distributed by knocking out the lowest ranked candidate and distributing their preferences (or exhausting the ballot if they gave none) until a candidate has 50% of the vote or until there are only two candidates left.

It sounds like a furious debate from my vantage point here with a fair bit of hysteria over the new system. Rather funny when we've had preferencial voting since the 1920's! :D

Anyway, as well as making no sense on AV, Caffran has also stolen the top of the page, thus condemning us to at least 20 more posts of spa... erm, I mean, idle chatter prior to an update.

But to every grey cloud... Agent Larkin revealed himself and you suggested a new slogan. I'd go for this one though:

"The Butterfly Effect: Will the War start before we all die of old age?!?"

See, now it's a murder mystery... ;)

Dury.

First, didn't realise i stole the page header so will dutifully comply with reaching the next one.

secondly, made no sense of AV? the quote or in general?

let me elucidate.

An old T.V. series from the eighties, 'Auf Wiedersehen, Pet' demonstated the AV system. A group of British workmen movede out to Germany to build houses. when they reached their 'billet' they decided to repaint it, and voted on what colour it should be. one of them suggested all putting their preferances down instead of just picking one colour (AV in action).

All the votes were added up and the result....

Yellow.

"Who the hell voted for yellow?" was asked.

"No-one" came the reply. "It was everyone's second or third choices."

To which Denis uttered the line which defines AV, "Everyone gets what nobody wants".

AV works on apathy, pure and simple. second or third choice will be the most inoffensive guy left.

It only works in Australia because it's forced on everyone.

Am i correct in saying it's ILLEGAL not to vote?

Democracy in action

A fine discussion on electoral systems, interesting and full of potential ideas to try and weave into the story. Thus I fully expect all of it, along with a few nearby posts, to be deleted for no obviously apparent reason.

Of course the most relevant discussion on voting is what system Britain and the Dominions should use in the various economic councils and conferences when voting on Empire Free Trade...

trekaddict - This is the Butterfly Effect! The first updates about the coming war will probably be about the construction of the bridges being crossed, a diversion into fruit production in Latin America and something about trains. There's always something about trains. ;)

Nathan Madien - Personally I'm aiming for - The Butterfly Effect: Guaranteed to make you know about obscure details off the 1930s if it doesn't kill you. Not as snappy as 'stronger' but probably more achievable!

caffran - Thanks for taking the top of the page, brought me some valuable time, however I I suspect some of your fellow readers may share my feelings on the matter. ;)

Duritz - I see all the years of AV has made you impatient for war, violence and death. An excellent argument against changing the voting system... :D

Agent Larkin - Welcome aboard, that is a truly epic effort. I just wish I had an update ready to reward you with.

Next update is... sort of finished. I'm debating a complete re-write to shoe-horn in yet another cool idea, but that will mean a whole section being cut out and left in my 'bits to post later' file.

There should be something ready for the next top of page though, if nothing else it's an excellent incentive for me to just make a decision.

You heard the man lads, to the top of the next page and step on it! There may not be tanks, but god please let there be tanks, but even a non tank post brings us closer to armoured goodness...

Oh, and Pip. One nation, one vote for Empire Free Trade decisions. I can't wait till the Doc gets to the table...

Caffran - Actually your example is compulsory preferential voting, and not what is being proposed in the referendum. Under the AV model currently being suggested no one had to preference yellow at all and so you chose the candidates you actually want and don't preference the others at all. Having said all that, I'm in favour of compulsory preferential voting... but then I wouldn't have put yellow 3rd! :D

As for compulsory voting... Of course you have to vote, it's a democracy! To not do so would be to absolve yourself of your responsibility to your country and deny you the right to whinge when things go wrong. ;) It's like that old saying, "Decisions are made by those that turn up." That sort of sums up the problem with non compulsory voting right there.

So, the last government of Britain was decided in this manner... only 65% of those eligible to vote turned up, and only 36% voted for the Tories. That means that your Prime Minister got elected with roughly 23.5% of potential voters favouring him. That's under 1 in four.

Democracy in action indeed...

Maybe a majority did want Cameron as PM and a Conservative/Lib Dems coalition but your electoral system did not establish that fact one way or the other. AV is a far more democratic and indicative system of what the people want.

Dury.

Ok folks going on my count of twenty posts per page we need ten more posts after this one for the new page.

That means a conversation topic...

So how bout that Gloucester Meteor and/or Hurricane MK2 and/or Bristol Beaufighter (my favourite)?

And yes I fall under the "plane porn" category.

Another Airframe Addict? Welcome aboard indeed, Agent Larkin! :D

As for AV, let me just say that I welcome the chance to lash out at the blithering idiots who have enabled the most dangerous round of spending cuts since the days of Denis Healey (when I was in short pants, but could clearly see that scrapping TSR-2 was foolish to the point of being treasonous...:( )

Umm, I'd mention the A6M Zero again now, but I'm afraid to in case I'm responsible for a sudden partial page removal, like the last t-<INTERRUPT : I Now Inform You That You Are Veering Dangerously Away From Train and Tank Related Matters. Repent! :p>

Yay! South American update first! At least, that's what I make of it :)

Either way just post away; no need to leave out stuff ;)

I'll add to the post count ... er, the discussion by supporting Dury on the voting issue. It allows you to vote for the candidate you wish to win instead of for the candidate most likely to thwart the cad you don't want in.

Too true, as a politico junkie the "debate" is at such a childish level that I can't help but laugh at some of the statements I'm reading. And I mean both sides of the debate.

Um, Beaufighter. Some were made in Australia you know! ;)

Tanks in South America painted with fruit on them is my vote for the next update.

Yep, think I'm up to date on all topics now... and more importantly we're one post closer to the top of the page! :D
