Having to deal with the British and the rebels at the same time the Qing couldn't send many forces to Manchuria so that our troops have easily advanced in the region.
The only problem were the Manchurian rebels who wanted to declare independence from China, just like the Xibei San Ma and Shanxi Kingdoms did. However in this case there was also some Russian involvement because after the annexation of Mongolia the Tsaz secretly supported the creation of a russian satellite in Manchuria to have access to the rich Manchurian mines.
So the government expressly ordered us to suppress as soon as possible any rebellion.
Man, I can't believe that but it has happened. The Qing government has completely collapsed. There is no control anymore outside Beijing and even most of the Manchu generals have rebelled.
Here at the camps we don't know what to say. I cannot believe that less than ten years ago we still were subjects of this shameful dynasty...
The situation was so desperate for the Qing that they have quickly surrendered to the British, in exchange for some help with the rebels.
But we heard that in their peace treaty they haven't discussed at all about our interests. I bet that many at the court are disappointed of this indifference. It doesn't matter to me, I think we don't need any intercession of the westerners. We can get our part from this war without calling for help like children.
We have occupied the castle of Chengde! The loyalist Qing troops are still battling in the south so the way to Beijing is open.
There is something even more astounding. I heard that the King too is preparing to land in Manchuria to follow the operations. I don't recall the last time that a Joseon has left the peninsula to join a war, but this great moment for our Kingdom indeed deserves his presence on the battlefield.
Our King has arrived at the main camp yesterday evening. In the morning he made a long speech praising our troops and he said that he will personally assist to the siege of Beijing. All of our soldiers applauded his Majesty and after a few hours we started to march to the Qing capital.
While we were besieging Beijing, we heard that the last Manchurian fort has fallen. Then it happened something really annoying. We have received several western emissaries, especially from Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States, asking us to sign a peace with the Qing.
But what has been more disturbing is that while the British and the Americans do recognize our interests in Manchuria, the Russian Empire suggests instead some kind of international force in the area. The Tsar even says that given the troubles in Manchuria he will reluctantly accept his responsibility by taking the command of that administration!
Really, is he sure? Poor man, what a burden to him...
The situation was worsening. The Russians have started to gather their troops near the northern border with China. Today our King has left the battlefield to return home. After a few days we were informed that a peace treaty has been signed between our Kingdom and the Qing.
This time we have finally got our bite but I think that we could obtain much more if the Russian hadn't meddled.
Many generals are disappointed of the Russian behaviour. Although in the past the Russians helped us, especially by military training, now they seem to worry about our rise. It is better to watch them in the future, I don't want to be pessimist but they might be a threat to us if we are not careful.
Yeah, I'd like to liberate the Philippines from Spain and also Indonesia from Netherlands, but it seems that UK loves them so I don't know if the last one will be possible.
The treaty divided Manchuria in two parts. The western Manchuria will be controlled by our realm and the eastern part will be governed by a Sino-Russian administration. In this administration the Chinese will provide the military forces to suppress future rebellions while the Russian will run the ecomical activities in the area. What a coincidence!
The Qing also seem really worried of us because they have recently signed an alliance with the Empire of Japan.
Today I've read on the newspaper that there was a coup in Beijing. The Forbidden City has been attacked by some rebels who proclaimed the Dictatorial Republic of China. The Qing court has called for help to their Russians friend. There are still no details of what the Tsar will do.
The Chinese revolution didn't last for long. The Russian troop with the help of some Qing-loyalist called the Boxers (I don't know what does it mean) managed to overthrow the DRC. Although the Emperor has returned in the capital, the court lost the control of the Boxer movement which after the restoration of the royal dynasty started to attack the foreigners and called to a reconquest of the lost territories. The Emperor, who was obviously embarrassed, was forced from the westerners to arrest who once fought for him.
Our King didn't take any position about the Boxer issue, but it is said that he has pity on the Qing.
I don't understand such enthusiasm for a few broken pots and tools. Many at the government say that the discover of a prehistorical site in our lands is something really important for our international prestige and that these fragments even deserve some place to be kept and to be seen from everyone.
What? Even a mausoleum for a bowl? Well, whatever you say...
In the last years our contacts with the westerners have increased dramatically. Many foreign merchants have come to trade in our Kingdom, the Vietnamese little realms ask our advice to many issues, even the United Kingdom want to discuss about our respective spheres of influence and how prevent an excessive Russian expansion in China. We have truly become very important in the world.
We have started to receive visits from the French, the Austrians and the Ottomans. Everyone wants to improve their relations with us and our increased prestige is reflected in the growing opulence and elegance of the Joseon court during these meetings. Last time it was too much pompous for me and I had to go outside because I was suffocating. But our Royal Family likes these moments, especially the Crown Prince who has studied abroad. He even joins those strange western dances, like the Waltzs of a musician called Stross or Strau, who cares...
Our recent conquests in Manchuria are worth our past efforts. The Manchurian lands are full of rich mines, too bad that we had to divide this wealth with the ungrateful Russians...
Our Crown Price has already started to have his own role in the Kingdom's rule.
Many of us know about his strange ideas of a common market in the area. Apparently the King has accepted his suggestions because on the newspaper I've read that our country will host a Regional Trade Fair to promote our economic activities and to improve our bonds with our neighbours, expect the Chinese who have refused to participate.
The winds of war are back in our region. The British have declared war to Tibet and their ambassadors told our government that the cause was their fear of a Tibetan-Russian agreement to take advantage of the constant disorders of Xinjiang and eventually divide the region.
This only sounds to me like an excuse.
But what is more important are the recent developments in Manchuria. Perhaps it is time to settle our disputes with the Russians there once for all.
