Welcome to my latest venture in Forum Games. My intent here is to create a game more focused on stats and strategy, rather then my usual simplistic format. This game shall begin in 1601 and carry on into the future, from generation to generation as players build their dynasties to last the centuries. We begin the game in an era of exploration, where players are relatively weak, beginning the game with a single ship and at the mercy of the super powers. As we move forward, players can look forward to becoming powers in their own right, waving the flag of their super power of choice, or forging their own independent nation.

This game is a re-imagining of my former forum game The New World. In The Lost World, a mysterious portal known as the Devil's Triangle has been exploited by the super powers of Spain, France, England and Holland, and a new world has been discovered, one teeming with prehistoric beasts. The lure of wealth and fortune sends the ambitious forth to brave the Jurassic terrors and colonies are built in the name of the European powers.

As the game begins, the terrors of this Lost World are largely unknown, with mere rumours and fantastical tales spun of the monsters that lurk the continent, while the islands currently settled by the powers are mostly safe. Exploration, trade, warfare, colony building, not to mention unravelling the mysteries of the Lost World will be found in this upcoming forum game.

To sign up, write a character sheet...

Name:
Nationality:
Positive: Players may select a bonus - either large or small for the price of a detriment in the stats listed below. Player may ignore this all together.
Negative: For each positive, you must also select a negative. ie. a small bonus to diplomacy must also have a small negative for a different attribute.
Captain's Share: A figure that dictates how much loot is given to your character and his officers, and how much is doled out to the crew. Most consider 25% to be fair. The higher the share, the greater the risk of mutiny. This figure can be changed at any time.
Bio: You may wish to keep this generalized as possible until the game starts, and more backstory is given.

Upon signing up, I will roll on your Lion's Throne inspired stats and place your bonuses.

Diplomacy: Effects the value of trade routes. Your ability to charm others into giving you better prices increases the value of trade routes you build.

Administration: Your ability to govern your ship, fleet, colony, making mutinies and rebellions less likely to happen. Administration level earns you a small bonus to tax income when you found a colony.

Tactics: Attributes a bonus to your forces' attack strength.

Duelling: Duels are viewed as an honourable means of settling disputes in this time period - Duels are decided by the roll of a die, the higher the level, the greater number of dice are thrown in your favour. There will be occasions as well where players meet, depending on the circumstances, a duel will follow.

a look at the "engine" I shall be using to process stats...

Name: Antonio de Bazán
Nationality: Spanish
Positive: Small bonus to diplomacy
Negative: Small malus to tactics
Bio:
Antonio de Bazán was born in Granada, southern Spain, in the year 1574. His grandfather, Álvaro de Bazán was the 1st Marquis of Santa Cruz and an Admiral of the Spanish Armada. While his father failed to leave a significant mark on history, Antonio hoped to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps, learning a great deal about diplomacy and courtly manners before joining the Spanish Navy at the age of sixteen.

Antonio’s first post had him took him to Brittany where he assisted the French Catholic League against the English and the French Protestants. With the failure of the expedition's attempt to capture Brest Antonio was sent to Manila where he served Governor-General Francisco de Tello de Guzmán during the Magalat Revolt. He fought successfully against the rebels, capturing and executing several of their leaders.

Following the end of the rebellion he was called back to Madrid by his official duties. He quickly made the acquaintance of King Philip II, who, upon seeing his military record, awarded him a knighthood in the Order of Santiago and sent him with a ship to help protect treasure ships in the Caribbean from English attacks. It was three years later that he was given the order to explore the newly discovered “Lost World” in the name of Spain.

I haven't had much time of energy for games, but this is too good. I still dearly love dashing Juan O'Dea.

1601 is the year that ends with the Battle of Kinsale, so my character will probably be an Irish adventurer in the Spanish service.

Name: Hakam ibn Hakam Galbunid
Nationality: Andalusian-Moroccan
Positive: Major Bonus to Administrative
Negative: Major Malus to Duelling
Captain's Share: 30 %

Bio: Hakam comes from a long line of Hakams of Andalusian decent. Within the last two-hundred years his family was pushed out of Spain, and forced to flee to Morocco. Before fleeing, the Galbunids had been landholders in Western Spain, lands thsat they had held all the way back to the Umayyad Caliphate. Now, Hakam's family is poorer than it has been in centuries, but he has found an opportunity: he has convinced the chief advisor to the King of Morocco to fund an expedition to rival that of the Heathens to the North. Unfortunately, while the Galbunids have always been favored with a "Midas Touch", never have they been truly competent warriors.

((Yes this is based on a CK II family))

Name: Monsieur Guy Marcel Jean-Paul Gouttedor (It: Guido Marcello Giovanni Paolo Gruttadauria)

Nationality: French of Italian Origin

Positive Traits: Large Dueling bonus

Negative Traits: Large Administration malus

Captain's Share: 15%

Personal Bio: Born the child of an Italian sailor and a French maid, the young Guido bounced from town to town searching for adventure and work. He served in the Genoan merchant navy as a powder monkey, the Spanish and Portuguese navies as a sailor, the Venetian navy as a galley captain and the Neapolitan Navy as a frigate captain. He met a young Henry IV during a tour of the French Navy after the Treaty of Lyon. Impressed by his irrepressible optimism, Guy was given a small caravel, a crew and a small fortune as a personal mission to the New World, the unpopular King Henry wanting to have something to keep his mind off of the religious turmoil in France.

Guy (as he is known in France) is an irrepressibly happy man who sees the positiveness of any occurrence, even when it became apparent the New World was populated by nothing short of devil beasts. Handy with a blade but awful with money, Guy is but a hop a skip and a jump from the history books as one of France's foremost (and earliest) explorers.

Name: Donnacha O'Dea
Nationality: Irish
Positive traits: Large diplomacy, small dueling
Negative traits: Large administration, small tactics
Captain's Share: 20%

Bio: Donnacha O'Dea is a Catholic Irishman from the Kingdom of Thomond. Breaking with his own clan (which followed the O'Briens in staying out of the currently raging revolt in Ireland) he joined a diplomatic mission to Spain that helped secure that King's intervention in Hugh O'Neill's war. While in Spain he became interested in the lands beyond the devil's triangle. He obtained the support of several prominent figures in the Spanish court, and has been named the head of an expedition flying under the Spanish flag.

Charming and personable, Donnacha has a gift for languages and inquisitive nature. Raised in a warrior culture and travelling in aristocratic circles, he is fairly well acquainted with personal combat. But he lacks the attention to detail to manage affairs on his own, and has only a rudimentary appreciation of the larger issues of strategy.

Adding a new stat; Captain's Share, which will designate how much loot your character takes and how much he doles out to his crew during missions. 25% is considered fair, beyond that, the higher the share, the greater the chance of mutiny. Administrators have a saving throw to all mutiny attempts and can typically get away with a larger share.

I ask that all players include their Captain's share to their sign ups. This number can be changed at any time when the game begins.
