I don't see why you're surprised Pikemen - archer formations wreck cavalry, very historically as well (1312 battle of the golden spurs, flemish pikemen wreck the French cavalry)

I started with this old Iconoclast Emperor dude, killed my son's (Leon IV's) wife, married him to 4th daughter of the Lombard king, then slaughtered all the other heirs (about 7 people I think), so my grand daughter would inherit Lombardy eventually. As Leon IV, I had an alliance with my wife Queen Anselperga of Lombardy, helped her deal with a couple of revolts and conquer a bunch of land. Married my daughter Helena to Peppin Karling (matrilineally), I believe he was a bastard son of Karl the Great. He usually tends to have many kids, but I was lucky he didn't, was incapable or something. Also, I invited a Norse Germanic courtier to my court, and had her teaching my kids. Now my Norse Germanic son Bjorn gonna inherit both the Byzantines and Francia. Was helping my husband a lot with revolts and rebellions. My dukes conquered a bunch of land on their own.
