This AAR has been closed due to the December 13, 1941 bug, which I did not know of. I thik I have installed the patch to correct it, but it unfortunately will not fix a saved game. So, I have to begin again.

I have linked this AAR to my new one, and have played out this first AAR as a dream had by the future leader of the "red Eagle" party, Earl Browder.

Here is a link to the current AAR, if you are interested to follow it ...
Red Eagle AAR ... The 1.05c solution

****************************************

Thanks to those who responded and gave me encouragement in my first AAR attempt -
The Other Empire, A Japanese AAR.

During that game, the US elected Alf Landon in '37.
Curious, I ran a US game to the election to see what effect it had.
The odd thing was, I ignored all aspects of game play - just fast forwarded to 1937 election.
However, due to my negelct of the system,
the US government was overthrown when dissent skyrocketed to 100%

That gave ne a thought ...
And here I present to you the opening scenes of a new U.S. after action report, with a twist ...

RED EAGLE : an alternate history HoI AAR

*************************************************

July 1-9, 1936

After months of the worst economic downturn the USA had ever seen, tempers boiled over. The Army was ordered out to quell uprisings across the country. However, in many cases, the soldiers either stepped aside or joined in the massive anti-government show of force.

July 10, 1936

In a dramatic move, elements of the newly emerged “Red Eagle” party made a move for power.
A series of “accidents”, and a convenient “brain hemorrhage” by the President later –
the United States of America was under new leadership.

*************************************************

The head of the new government was Earl Browder.

A man of modest stature, President Browder gave a speech to a
standing room only crowd in New York’s Yankee Stadium.

In his speech he told the people there that it was time for a new America.
Time for America to assume its true “Manifest Destiny.”
He proclaimed that the “Monroe Doctrine” was not only a “keep your hands off”
notice to those outside of the Western Hemisphere, but it was also notice to all those within the Western Hemisphere that we are the rulers of this portion of the globe.

He had harsh words for the rising governments in Germany and in Italy.
He called them nothing more than “oppresive dictatorships.”
He also spoke poorly of Great Britain, calling England a country which had
“misused the crown of World Leader” when it subjected Germany to the post-WWI
economic pressures which lead to the dictatorial governments now in charge.

He told those gathered and those listening by radio that the fruits of their hard labors had been squandered by the government elect. He and his people had taken a page from the writings of
Thomas Jefferson when he capped his speech with the words :

"Prudence will dictate that governments long established, should not be changed for
light and transient causes. But, when a long train of abuses and usurpations,
pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce the people under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government,
and to provide new guards for their future security.
"

It was a powerful speech.
Altho the crowd in the stadium was handpicked, the cheers were not lost on the American people. The elected government had not managed to get them out of the depression,
could Earl Browder and his party do worse ?

*************************************************

The newspapers on July 11th wrote with cautious words.

No one knew what to expect from these “Red Eagles.”
They said all the right words, but something still did not seem right. The United States was founded upon a revolution, but that seemed like so long ago.
It was a different time.
Wasn’t it ?

*************************************************

The newspapers listed those whom President Browder named to his cabinet.

Sam Darcy, foreign minister. Known as an Ideological Crusader.
Wyndham Mortimer, armaments minister. A Resource Industrialist.
Alexander Bittelman, minister of security. Quietly referred to as The Prince of Terror.
William Donovan, minister of intelligence. A Dismal Enigma.
Malin Craig, Chief of Staff & the Army. An advocate of Defense, and “Guns & Butter”
Willian Standley, Chief of the Navy. Advocate of the Base Control Doctrine
Oscar Westover, Chief of the Air Force. Advocate of Army Airpower Doctrine.

*************************************************

For the first week, the people of the United States watched, and listened.
They saw the idle factories begin to reopen.
They saw order restored and the level of civil dissent began to reduce.

They listened as they were told that the smaller countries of the Western Hemisphere were
simply too small and too backward to be allowed to continue on their current paths.
Central and Southern America would be better off if they were brought into the fold of the United States.
And some people began to believe…

Oooooo, can't wait to see what happens. I did the same in my game only the dissent was caused by DOWing which got me into the allies as well (go fig)

My friends had once a multiplayer game with Communist USA. Germany player was pretty pissed off when USA joined the Comintern. Just watch it, Canada will probably attack you if you start DoWing those small countries. Oh yeah, more:D

Red Eagle 1.2

With the new administration began a new series of initiatives.

In an effort to get people back to work, the Great Wall of America was started.
A project to construct a series of fortifications along the Canadian and Mexican borders.
Steel factories rumbled back to life to supply material for the Wall.

The military began a concentrated recruiting program.
Those who could not find work were offered employment in the ranks.
Soldiers pay was forwarded to their families.

President Browder spoke to the American people late in March.
He told them that Germany annexing Austria was probably a good thing for the Austrians. The small country of Austria could hardly expect to survive in the growing global community. England and France had in effect annexed Poland when they took it into the Alliance. Being part of the larger was much better than struggling along alone.

France and England Declare War on Germany and Hungary !

In a radio address to the American people that night, President Browder told them that he would not allow any oppression of the lesser countries in the Western Hemisphere. European nations may allow their neighbors to be pushed around and exploited, but the United States will have none of that. As of tonight, any foreign incursion into this side of the globe will be considered an act of aggression against the United States.

President Browder orders Unites States Naval Forces to a war standing.
Troops are to be loaded for deployment immediately.
Corp commands are assigned to Generals Eisenhower, MacArthur, Eichelberger, Stillwell, Clark, and Haislip. Eisenhower and Haislip’s Corps are the first to be loaded and prepared for deployment.

Presidential Address, evening of May 11, 1940

“… There comes a time when a country must act; not only for the good of its neighbors, but for the good of itself. It is with a heavy heart that I tell you this evening that there has been an ongoing campaign of influence from European nations into the government of Mexico. Despite my best efforts, and the efforts of Minister Darcy, it has come to pass that the Mexican leaders are pursuing ever tighter ties with foreign dictators and with dangerous nations. I have ordered our military onto a high state of alert. “

a sound of shuffled papers & whispers crosses the airwaves

“… My fellow Americans. I have just been given word that our military forces in San Antonio have been shelled from across the border with Mexico. Such actions cannot, and will not be condoned. It is a rash and thoughtless jesture of the Mexican authorities to choose this course for the hard working people of Mexico. I there for, as of this moment, declare that a state of war is now in effect between the United States and Mexico. But, I beg of the citizens of America, do not think of this action as a reaction of anger. In the end, it is only the misguided leaders of Mexico whom will be held accountable for their actions. I look forward to the day when we have liberated the Mexican people from the small-minded men whom hold them is such low esteem. …”

On May 12, 1940 , the declaration is official.

On May 13, 1940, American forces begin landing operations in the provinces of Cuiacan in the Pacific, and in Vera Cruz in the Gulf of Mexico.

Cuilcan is secured on the 14th, Vera Cruz a day later. There is little resistance.
The commanders waste no time in expanding the bridgeheads.
June 9th, General Stillwell’s Corp secure Monterrey after a brief fight.
June 4th General Eisenhower’s Corp secures Chihuahua with minimal resistance.

Troops continue to pour into the bridgeheads.
In all 6 corps, numbering 23 divisions move into Mexico.

June 15th in a simultaneous move, MacArthur’s Corp seizes Tijuana, while Hailsip’s Corp secures Acapulco. Light fighting is reported. Recon flights indicate that the Mexican Army is falling back to the capitol province.

September and October of 1940 saw more reallocation of force in Mexico.

4 Army Corp converged and crushed resistance in the
province of San Luis Potosi.
This move effectively sealed the Mexican Army in the capitol province.

October 19th, the newly formed 1st Armored Bde
(General Patton commanding) broke thru the weakened lines of the last Mexican command outside of Ciudad Mexico.
Hermosillo province is now in the hands of America.

General Stillwell has been reassigned to a new command.
A newly formed Mountain Corp has been established. It is expected to play a pivotal role in the upcoming siege of Mexico City. Some 18 divisions are reported to be dug in there. Reports are that while the city is surrounded, the troops are in good fighting order. It is reported that the military has claimed all food supplies for soldiers usage, and many civilians are going hungry.

November was a very quiet month.
President Browder placed orders upon the Army to plan to take Mexico City on Christmas Day of 1940. All plans were set around that.

Christmas eve, 34 divisions pounded into the Mexican capitol. The 18 defending divisions stood little chance. On Christmas night of 1940, President Browder addressed the nation …

”Good evening fellow Americans. I have good news for you, and for our friends, the citizens of Mexico. On this day, our armed forces have taken command of Mexico City. The foolish, and short-sited regime that held sway there is gone. Our southern borders are now secure. The future of our Mexican brothers is assured. You will join the United States, and share in its upswinging prosperity. I wish to thank all of our brave men in uniform who so devoutly kept their eyes on the goal of liberating the good peple of Mexico. And, to all of the people of Mexico, I wish you all a very Happy Holiday, and a most prosperous of new years…”

March 15th. Eisenhower’s Corp, attempting to support Stillwell in Cali, strikes at the province of Medellin. 4 Columbian divisions are dug in here.

March 16th. Stillwell’s Mountain Corp secures Cali Province, sustaining about 20% casualties. Air support is reassigned to Eisenhower’s attack. Stillwell’s troops are still in good order, and are odered immeadiately to move to Medellin to support Eisenhower.

March 20th. Eisenhower falls back from Medellin. Stillwell is 6 days from lining up with him, and he cannot sustain the attack. The Air Corp is ordered to continue attacks in the hope that Stillwell will be able to carry the day himself …

Hailsip, Eichelberger, and MacArthur move out from Cartagena towards Bogota. The action facing Stillwell and Eisenhower seems to have left the capitol city lightly guarded.
They expect to assault the city on April 2.

March 27th. Stillwell engaged Columbian forces in Medellin. Spaatz’s bomber make 3 strikes a day leading up to and thru the assault. Losses are heavy, but the airmen bravely keep the pace up.

March 30th. After 3 days, Stillwell breaks the Columbian lines in Medellin. He routs 6 Columbian divisions. The Mountain Corp is now spent, being at barely 50% manpower, and under 20% organization.

April 2nd. 3 Corps, under overall command of General MacArthur begin the assault on Bogota. They are opposed by 7 Columbian divisions, but only 3 are in fighting organization. The outcome is inevitable. The Columbian troops fight desperately, abd cause nearly 25% casualties to the American forces. But on April 7th, the lines break, and the Americans take command of the Columbian capitol.

May 22nd. In a quiet meeting between General MacArthur and Columbian General Rojas Pinilla, the control of the country of Columbia is annexed to the United States. Pinilla informs MacArthur that several divisions have crossed the border into neighboring Venezuela. He indicates that he did not order this, and by all International rules, Venezuela should have closed its borders to them. General MacArthur makes a field decision. He call on the newly formed Marine Corp, under General Griswold, to land in the Venezuelan capitol of Caracas. MacArthur orders General Stillwells reinforced Mountain Corp to move to the Venezuelan province of Maracaibo. He orders his own Corp to back up Stillwell. The Pacific Transport Squadron is brought thru the Panama Canal and moves General Handy’s Corp in to support Griswold’s Marines.

Stillwell’s Mountaineers reached Maracaibo on May 30th. MacArthur’s Corp was 3 days behind. Spaatz’s reinforced bomber wings stood ready to support. Several new squadrons of A-20 Havoc bombers arrived in Columbia a few days earlier, but were not expected to be in organized condition in time for the attack.

The assault on Maracaibo was competed on June 4th. Stillwell’s Mountaineers drove 6 Venezuelan divisions under General Agnarita back towards the capitol province. 5 tactical bomber squadrons were relocated to Maracaibo to support the upcoming attack on Caracas. MacArthur, Haislip, and Eichelberger’s Corp arrived in Maracaibo on June 5th. It was decided to rest and refit the divisions before moving against Caracas. MacArthur was confident that no matter how ready the Venezuelan Army was, it was no match for the combined force of 6 American Army Corps. D-Day was set for June 22nd.

Axis Powers Declare War on Soviet Union !
President Browder considers aid to Russia …

****************************************

Special Cabinet Meeting, the evening of June 17, 1941

President Browder announces he intends to give all possible aid the Russians in their fight against the Axis Powers. He orders the foreign minister to begin transferring technology to them as soon as possible. He is considering offering them an alliance, but is holding off until we can solidify the Pacific Theater against the Japanese. He orders operations in the South Americas to be wrapped up as quickly as possible.

******************************************

Meanwhile, in Venezuela …

Griswold’s Marines hit the beach on the evening of June 22nd. They were covered by the 2nd Bombardment Group, Admiral Hart commanding. The big guns of the battleships New Mexico, Mississippi, and Idaho pounded the shoreline as the landing craft closed in.
MacArthur’s land assault began 2 hours before the bombardment began, and with it the Venezuelan Army was caught between the preverbal “hammer and anvil.” Venezuelan General Agnarita had 10 divisions under his command, and they fought well. The Americans suffered about 10% casualties, but completely routed the Venezuelan Army.

MacArthur ordered immediate pursuit of the retreating troops. The Americans expected to hit the Venezuelans in Cumana on July 9th.

July 9th, MacArthur again routs the forces of General Agnarita. The Venezuelan Army looses 4 divisions entirely, the remaining 6 fall back into the under-developed provinces of the Venezuelan jungle. MacArthur is content to leave them there, and simply leaves a garrison force in Cumana and Curacas. The remaining American forces are ordered to rest and refit pending future orders.

August 1941

Units are refit, and reassigned. 4 marine divisions are sent to the Phillipines, along with 3 armored divisions. A force of 3 squadrons of tactical bombers is sent as well. Production begins on new model fighter aircraft. By early September, the shifting of forces is under full swing. The Americans share industrial technology, primarily in the area of manufacturing and assembly-line advances, with Russia.

Great AAR!

I do have one question, however. What is your dissent hit now that you turned "Red" every time you DOW a country that is a democracy like Venezuala?

Keep up the good work.

DR

Question ...

My dissent takes the usual whack when you DoW.
Jumps 8 or 10% I think, not completely sure.

The big advantage with the US is that I am running
with a huge surplus of consumer goods.
The end result is that while I am at war,
my dissent drops by an average of .05 to as much as .09 per day.

At that rate, within a few months, the DoW penalty is gone.
I DoW'd Mexico, Columbia, and Venezuela all within
about 1 year. The end result is a dissent of about 28% right now.
I began with dissent well over 40% after the revolution.
(a guess - it was 37% in 1938, 2 years after the revolution)

So, rough net :
5 years, 3 DoW's, and dissent is still down well below what I started with.

It would be lower, but I have upped my science and unit production,
so I think I am only getting -.04 per day currently.

The problem is, I can't afford to go off war footing.

I annexed Columbia, but had to continue the war status, so I picked Venezuela. I can garrison it and not annex it for a while. Columbia had too much land, and too many active units still in the field. Did not want to try and garrison it.

After fairly aggressive lobbying with Russia, there is still no sign of them accepting an alliance with the United Sates. Many technological advances have been shared, but there seem to be little interest on the Russian side. Perhaps when the Axis really begins to move against them …

There has been some suggestion of expanding the US influence in the South American region more. This is being given heavy consideration, in light of the Russian non-responsiveness. By early December, there will be another round of recruits fully trained.

A meeting in the Oval Office with the General Staff …

President Browder finishes reading a letter and slams his hand on the table.

“Dammit ! The Germans are knocking on the doors of Moscow, and still Stalin is too pig-headed to accept our help … Gentlemen, we have a growing military force. I don’t want it to get out of shape.
(he smiles wryly) General Craig, do you have the plans which I asked of you a month ago ?”

“Yes Sir”,
General Craig replied, and began to speak to the group …

“The nation of Brazil is made up of 23 provinces. 13 of them have reasonable infrastructure, the rest are extremely under-developed. The Brazilian Army is quite large.
However, given the rather primitive nature of their technology and tactics, I don’t see that being insurmountable.”
He unrolls a map on the table…

“ I think we can use our Naval mobility to our advantage greatly here. We have 4 landing zones on the coast of Brazil. One being the capitol of Rio de Janeiro. Using our 2 transport fleets, I propose to land troops in Recief and Salvador. These two provinces , being adjacent, will provide an excellent base of operations. Once that are is secure, and the Army beings operations out of it, we will land troops at Belem and Rio de Janeiro. I expect the initial landings in Recief and Salvador to draw a lot of movement from the Brazilian Army, so I believe the second wave of landings will have excellent chances to succeed and turn the flanks of any defensive line they attempt to establish. The only thing I worry about will be that this operation will stretch our forces extremely thin.”

President Browder speaks …

“Not to worry General Craig. I will open dialog with the Brazilian government as soon as we begin to have the upper hand. I don’t think we will have to conquer all of Brazil. Once we have secured their coast, and cut off their links to the outside world, I doubt it will be long before they come to see the light of their situation. Do we have a recommended time-table ?”

General Craig responds …

“Sir, we have several fighter squadrons that will be available within 2 months. It will take nearly that long for our newly deployed Corps to be combat organized. Beyond that, we will have 3 more standard infantry divisions ready in just under 3 months. More fighter squadrons, and a new round of tactical bombers will be ready in about 6 months. I would also like to recall the Marines from the Phillipines, as well as the armored divisions there.”

President Browder …

“Very well General. Recall the Phillipines forces, but move a garrison force out there to hold the line. If the time comes that Russia asks for help, I will strongly consider it. If we do, the Japanese are sure to move against our holdings in the Phillipines. I want a solid American presence backing up the Phillipino Army. You have 60 days, then I want you to proceed with operations in Brazil. As usual, we will handle the public statements when the time comes …”

game seems to run alright - so what I did didn't
completely pork my HOI game.

But, the saved game still locks up at 0:00 Dec 13.

My apologies -
I hope you all were enjoying it as much as I was enjoying playing / writing it.

I'll be back, maybe with Red Eagle II - "the 1.05c solution"

Or a different AAR. We'll see.
