Having knowledge of the rules of a game is a long way from having the ability to play a game well, as reading this dreary and uninspired series of posts will prove out. Yet, as all events on one’s life add to knowledge and ability, so will this one (or so I hope it will add to mine). I welcome suggestions, advice and comments from all, from recruit to admiral alike.

Game: IGC 2.3
Country Played: Sweden

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the year of our Lord, 1492, I began my service to the nobility and the people of Sweden, beginning with His Royal Grace, Sten Sture Sjoblad. At the time of my appointment, the land was rife with discontent. The nobility was constantly at odds with their king. The country’s stability was dangerously low, and so it was that I, along with the other ministers, bent head with our lord, prayed for that wisdom that comes from above and not of this world, and set out to improve the lot of our land.

As vassal to Denmark, we found ourselves restricted in our abilities. It was quite galling knowing that income was not as high as it could be, having to send monies to our southern neighbor, yet we were determined to make a difference with what we had.

Having but 1 diplomat initially available, we withheld his services until we could decide upon the wisest course of action. By January 6th, however, we witnessed 5 Royal Marriages among the European royalty. Our emphasis during the early months of 1492 was with the Ministry of Economics, and merchants were sent out as soon as we could round them up. Initially we concentrated on gaining a foothold in Venice, where we thought we might have the best returns for our investments. We had to fight the monopoly that Venice had upon their Center of Trade, but by March 1, we started seeing some progress made as our merchants began expanding business.

The summer of ’92 saw war, not in Europe but in Near Asia, as Turkey went to war with Mameluk. We followed the war with some interest, as our summer was quiet and almost content considering our chaffing under the Danes, and noted that Turkey clearly held the upper-hand.

In September, on the 18th to be exact, His Majesty penned off a letter to Russia, hoping to improve relations with our massive neighbor. Our concerns are to our west, not our east. Also, an alliance with Saxony was formed, while another letter was sent to Hannover. The rest of the year was spent quietly but productively. News of the ongoing Turkish/Marmeluk war kept us all amused, while providing loans to France kept us busy.

I'll follow your AAR with great interest, mate.

In my current russian game, Sweden is my older and most hated enemy, so it will be very interesting to read the turn of events from the opposite side! :p

Good luck with your game!

Slow day today, so I managed to get two posts in. And I have almost 30 years of notes to go! -

============================================

1493 began with 241d in the treasury after a gain of 60. It was time to make a plan of sorts, for good or for ill. Otherwise we were simply floundering our way through the days.

Our first priority was the raising of our country’s stability rating. A -2 would simply never do at all. Next, we needed more countries in our alliance, and hopefully one or more being a bit larger than Saxony. (OOC-having read the post about lending loans being a gold mine; I wanted to give that little tactic a try, so giving out loans would also be a priority for a while) Russian relations were simply awful, and we did NOT wish to be involved in a two-front war with Denmark on the one side and Russia on the other, so we needed a really concerted effort at raising relations with Russia from the worst of enemies to at least neutral, if not the best of friends. All these things would take time and money to accomplish, so we expected to play a quiet role for a while.

While Mameluk suffered defeat after defeat at the hands of the Turks, Sweden entered a Royal Marriage with Hannover on Feb. 1, 1493. Two months later, in April, we managed to acquire land technology 3, gaining field artillery ability for our armies. It was also during April that we witnessed several large alliances being formed. We remained quiet, hoping no one would notice us.

On Oct. 17, we convinced Hannover to join our alliance with Saxony. It was our hope that we would be able to distract Denmark with allies on the main continent when war finally came. Oct. 23rd saw Poland-Lithuania and Moldovia cross swords with the Teutonic Order and Prussia. The rest of the year proved to be rather uneventful.

1494 was very quiet for Sweden. The only events noteworthy included raising our stability to -1 on Jan. 1st, Turkey joining our alliance with Hannover and Saxony on July 2nd, while Russia rejected a proposal of Royal Marriage on that same day.

On New Years Day, 1495, letters to England and France improved relations with those countries somewhat. On March 1st our trade and infrastructure levels both rose to High Renaissance (2). On March 22nd, we witnessed poor Kazan fall under attack from Russia, Crimea, Ryazan, and Pskov, with only Venice dropping out of the alliance in protest. Venice immediately decided that their actions were too extreme and rejoined the Russian alliance, however, on April 2nd.

It was on June 12th that we had the brilliant idea of sharing explorations and discoveries with the Turks, still fighting the Mameluks to the south. To our wondrous surprise, they accepted our offer. The maps given us revealed lands far to the east and south, prompting a proposal of alliance with the arrogant and decidedly unfriendly country of Siber, who rather curtly refused on August 2nd.

The month of October kept our Minister of Finances busy. France repaid her loans, only to accept 8 more. England also accepted 10 loans, while Portugal saw Muriel I rise to the throne.

To our great surprise, on Nov. 18th Poland-Lithuania offered peace to the Teutonic Order, paying them 127d and giving away Belarus and Lithuania in the bargain. We start considering improving relations with PL, as we may have to face a strong Teutonic Order sometime in the future.

The classical start for Sweden (at least for me) is to DoW Denmark in january 1 (before they have any alliances in place) and then fight them to the annex. (Incidentally this also solves the vassalization problem :p)

Great start, great strategy. Haven't seen a Swedish AAR since... ever! Keep it up, Sergeant.

Note to Morpheus: DON"T READ THIS!
Ooohh! Will we get to see Sweden extracting vengence upon Sibir for their arrogance in refusing?:D Conquer them, I say!

-Pat

NEVER!!!!

psst: RELee! ally with Sibir, Teutons, poland, Prussia, etc. and go after Russia!

Cool start, and a nice title for an AAR this:D

Very nice, very nice...I think I likes this one.

Well, aren't y'all just sweeter'n molasses and honeysuckle dew! :)

I thank ye all fer the kind words. I just wish I knew more Swedish history so's I could add some more "homey" touches to all this stuff. I guarantee ya I can't write it in Swedish. I have read some stuff on the internet that helps a lot, but not enough I fear. Not to fear, I'll keep looking!

More to come later, soon as I can squeeze it in.

To those who read the earlier rant concerning the Swedish Monarch file, just disregard it all. I have found my answer and apologize for speaking (in rant) in ignorance. The current Swedish Monarch file is the accurate one.

When last we saw our intrepid explorers ...

Wait! Wrong story ...

January 1st, 1496
A bit of excitement, as news of an advancement in shipbuilding techniques reaches His Most Royal Highness. (Naval Tech 2)

On March 25th, Ryazan pays Kazan 121d for peace. This leaves Russia, Crimea, and Pskov against Kazan, however.

Sweden remains in a low-profile mode. Initially, our plans were to attempt to stay out of trouble for as long as possible while, hopefully, growing our treasury through loans given out to other nations. (A later piece of information on the forum, presenting us with the unhappy news that the later patch revision did away with the "gold mine" of loan making depressed me for a bit. I will still mention the loans and repaying of such, since I did start out with that particular strategy, but you will note the silent passing of this strategy into the realms of oblivion.)

In keeping with out strategy of Russian appeasement while concentrating on our Danish overlords, we send Ivan III a personal gift of some worth, improving our relations, at least on the surface level, with a most sour and seemingly unhappy man. (-109) The only other event worth noting for the year of 1496 was a royal marriage with England (HenryVII), improving relations just a bit there.

January 3rd, 1497, our royal marriage with Denmark expires. What's this? We no longer appear to be a vassal of Denmark. Can it be that our slavery is over so simply and uneventfully? (Really guys. I'm asking. Is this all that was needed to remove the vassalization?)

On Jan. 6th, decisions are made to implement a new 5-year plan. Included are having a royal marriage with Saxony, and keeping Russia out of Scandinavia. To that end, another personal gift was sent to the Russian Tsar, bringing up relations to a whopping -74! However, good things do not last forever, and the announced Treaty of Tordesillas on April 24th send us all into a livid fury at the arrogance shown in this treaty. On October 8th, Sjoblad steps down for Hans.

1497 passes into a quiet obscurity, with Turkey annexing the Mamaluks on November 25th, to no one's surprise, and the Russians come to an agreement with Kazan for a mere 16d in gold. Ivan is not so terrible as some would make him, methinks.

1498 is another quiet year, as we successfully keep our policy of invisibility. On New Year's Day, we send another personal gift to the Tsar Ivan. He seems, at least from his note, to be delighted with the small token (relations at -40). This good news is tempered with the reports of Unhappy Peasants on Feb. 1st. While I express my concern, Hans waves it off airily, counseling me that such news is not worth our notice; that the local governors would handle any problems that might arise. On April 9th, the French acquire a new King in Louis XII. Then on Dec. 19th, as we all happily looked forward to a quiet, peaceful Lord's birthday, we receive a message from Turkey requesting that we honor our alliance as they go to war with Persia. While Saxony and Hannover withdraw into their homes and lock the doors, Hans faithfully honors the alliance with our distant ally. We make no immediate plans, but sliced the roast goose instead.

New Year's Day on 1499 saw yet another personal gift being sent to old Ivan (+21). Turkey's war of misfortune comes to an end on March 29th, as they pay Persia 8d for the chance to withdraw. Three days later, Saxony and Hannover rejoin our alliance, but old Ivan simply has a fit when we suggest a royal marriage between our two countries. While disappointed, we are not disheartened, and on June 6th make the offer to France instead, who accepts better relations happily.

Turkey, after sulking over the Persian debacle for a few months, opens hostilities with Hungary on the date of August 23rd. Hans expresses a lot of disapproval over the warmongering that Bayezid II appeared to be relishing. Obviously, the Turk has grandiose visions of his place in this world. This declaration places Turkey, Saxony, Hannover, and Sweden at odds with Hungary, Austria, Bohemia, Wurtemburg, Lorraine, and Bavaria. October 7th arrives to the news that Bayezid has somehow offended Augustino Barbarigo of Venice to the point that he declares war on the Turks. With Venice comes Russia, Ryazan and Pskov (Crimea dishonors the alliance), which has King Hans purely beside himself over Bayezid's thirst for power and conquest. His Majesty quickly pens off an angry message dissolving the alliance with Turkey, leaving our country at war with Hungary and its allies, but without allies of our own. On the same day, we also send another personal gift to Ivan of Russia (+47), since we are somewhat ashamed of our short allegiance with the Moslem heathens. :)D , role-playing, ofc.)

End 1499

Your "remain in the shadow" style strategy is very interesting, I'll try this in my future game.

Of course, Turkey is not the ideal ally to avoid being at war with all of Europe, so you made the right decision by breaking your alliance with them, they would only have caused troubles to you.

Were Sweden really vassals of Denmark? I thought Norway was a vassal of Denmark and Finland(novgorod) was a vassal of Sweden... I think Sweden is too powerful to have been coded as a vassal. Are you sure?

Yes, I'm sure. Whatever real history might say, although I think they pretty much agree, the game lists Sweden as a vassal of Denmark at the beginning of the game. Finland is a mere province, not "country", and therefore is merely a part of Sweden (in the game). I do not know if it is a "core" province, since I'm not sure how to determine that little piece of info. "Newbie alert!":p

Actually, Finland is a free country. It's an IGC option, "Free Finland," and the country is actually called Novgorod. But, seeing as it doesn't even own Novgorod and its capitol is Finland, I always call it Finland, accurate or not.

Not-so-newbie answer!:D Hit the Political View icon under the main window (Normal/Political/Economic): it's the one with the two flags with crossed poles. This will show the map where each country is a single color, and, for the player country, many provinces will have the country's shield displayed. Those are your core provinces. You get a causus belli against any country that owns one of these, and when you annex a core province it does not suffer from nationalism.

-Pat

By "annexing a core province", you do mean your own, right? Because I think that other countries' cores suffer from nationalism quite a bit...;)

I knew that if I admitted to suffering from delusions of idiocy, someone would jump to my rescue. ;)

Just a quick note. The AAR updates, indeed the game itself, is on a short hold as I have something killing my internet email server at work. Soon as I can settle back down to the calm, boring everyday thing, I'll get right back to it.

Stay tuned to this channel for more updates as they come in.
