I just installed latest Improvement pack and Pagan mod. I decided to write an AAR about my first experiences as Pagan. I have other ongoing AAR called De Gesta Francorum et aliorum Hierosolimitanorum, which is bit more serious than this one. I will continue writing both, but I wanted to try bit more lighter writing style with this one.

The Return of Väinämöinen -Karelia AAR

My name is Aimo and I'm the High Chief of the Karelians. I'm descendant of the eternal sage Väinämöinen. He was a fatherless child of goddess Ilmatar and oldest human being. Despite him being older than the world his biggest pleasure was to chase barely legal girls. He was very popular among women, when one young lady heard that she must marry him, she drowned herself. Yeah, that's my ancestor. As you can see I like young girls too:

Pyry.jpg

One day Väinämöinen was sitting as a judge in a moot, when they brought young girl Marjatta and her baby there. She was accused for giving birth to a bastard. Väinämöinen ordered that baby should be killed. But before they could do anything baby started speaking. He said that his name is Kaukomieli and Väinämöinen had sired him. Väinämöinen who had been drunk at the time slowly started to recognise the girl and realized that he had slept with her. People laughed at Väinämöinen and he got really angry. He became even more angry when he heard that people had elected that baby to their new king. So he sailed away with his copper boat and left the mortal lands. That boy was my ancestor.

My realm is great. We have a lot of forests but only few people. I don't know why I even bother to pretend that I'm a great ruler. We have more bears than people. You can walk days around here without seeing anyone. I received word from the people of Käkisalmi (Kexholm) and from the Votes. They want to be our allies. I don't understand why, but I accept their offer. I'm even more surprised when I receive word from Savo. They want that I rule them. They must have lost their mind.

Urho.jpg

Last winter I was drinking in a feast and slept with a beautiful lusty young girl. We were celebraring midsummer, when she camed forward and presented her newborn baby to the people. Great, now my wife doesn't speak to me.

Urho2.jpg

Few months later that boy starts speaking at autumn market and declares that he will be the next king of the Karelians and will lead our people to greatness. There's no doubt that he is mine. Children in the other families don't start speaking this early, which is good thing because that kid is bloody annoying, but people seem to like him. Just great. My wife with whom I have only two daughters has invented that I have to sire a son with her and make her son to be my heir. People want that I make "wonder child" my heir. So you see what my problem is. I think that my wife has something to do with the "accident" which injured the "wonder child".

It annoys me so much that there isn't not even one decent warrior in this land besides me. Until one day I was picking berri... erm... I mean hunting bears in the forest when I met a fellow who had lost into woods. He seemed to be decent fellow so I took him to my marshal.

Mstislav.jpg

This is Mstislav, Prince of Novgorod, and I hate him because he is rich and has lots of subjects. He is one of those weird people called Christians who worship some dead god. He was his father's favourite son who always got what he wanted. When he inherited his father and became Grand Prince of Kiev I was filled with rage, but man I laughed when he lost his position in less than a year to Prince of Pereyaslavl. Now he is back in Novgorod. I hate him so much that I gather an army and raid Novgorod the Great.

Hykkys.jpg

Boleslaw.jpg

Unfortunately king of Poland is his ally and declares war against me. I sent 55 gold coins and formal surrender to the Pole. Poles are mighty nation and I bet that they will one day beat the crap out of Germans and Russians. Pole is a nice man, despite his bad choice of ally and he accepts my surrendering. Now I'm free to continue my campaign against that wretched Mstislav. I beat him in a battle several times and conquer his capital, which makes me very happy. Now I have many subjects, although their worship of that dead god freaks me out.

Mikhail.jpg

Next I decide that we will march against Pihkova (Pskov), because I want more subjects. I'm tired to be king of bear and moose. In Pihkova I challenge their ruler to personal combat and despite him being a mighty warrior I beat the crap out of their prince. I'm the best, I'm the coolest.

Peace.jpg

But I'm out of men, so I have to make peace with that wretched Mstislav. It annoys me so much, but I'm certain that I will kick his ass again in the future.

Mstislav's days are numbered.

bowl of soup: Welcome!

J. Passepartout Aimo will have to explain his wife why her son couldn't be the heir. And her wife has a nasty temper.

JimboIX: I hope so. Although he still has city of Kiev in south, but I want to crush him soon. But I don't want to end up in war against Poland.

Tskb18: My population more than doubled with the conquest of Novgorod and Pskov. And I want to spread the old ways to the lands where they worship that weird dead god.

yourworstnightm: That's my goal.

Legolas: I plan to unite the Baltic Pagans under a single rule and convert Northern Russia to Pagan. But at the moment I'm still weak and mighty kingdoms could easily crush me.

Baneslave: Technically not Finnish, because my capital in is Russian Karelia. ;) But I plan to create kingdom of Finland.

Minodrin: Thanks. I will update this soon, if not today then tomorrow.

My good Cardinal, may I help?

Peti is here, too, just in case :D

Interesting, pagan Karelians. Oh well, I'm sure the Swedes will teach Aimo a lesson or two about that dead god... :p It would surely be God's will, divinely inspired children who speak words of such wisdom would make wonderful saints you know ;)

Kurt_Steiner: I'll try to find use for you two in the future.

Gladstone: I'm not sure about what Swedes will teach, but I'll teach the Russians lesson of two about dead worshippers of the dead god.

Update coming ASAP.

Doesn't sound bad... yet. :D

We got a word that these worshippers of dead god wanted to liberate great city of Alexandria in a land called Egypt. Varyags who knew Southern geography better than Westerners decided not to participate into this project. Westerners are fools, everyone knows that there is no land called Egypt. It's just some silly fairy tale of the sailors. We laugh to the idea that they drown into the perillous Southern Ocean, because their ships aren't strong enough and they aren't small enough to reach Lintukoto*, which is the only land in the south. And they claim that these Egyptians have gods who have forbidden them to drink beer. That's even more ridiculous, who would worship a gods who forbid beer?

*Lintukoto means Home of the Birds. It is a place near the edge of the world disc. People there are lilliputs because sky dome connects to Earth there. Birds live there during the winter.

Miemo my marshall died. To old age they say. I don't believe it. I bet that it was his young wife who caused his death. Now I'm the only decent warrior in the whole Karelia. So I have to put an advertisement on a news birch bark.** I did get only one response. It was from a Novgorodian called Andrei. He worships dead god and I really don't want to hire him, but he might sue me for discriminating.

**First historical documents in Karelian are letters written to birch barks with Cyrillic alphabet.

Birch-bark_letter_292_real.jpg

Latest edition of Karjalainen (Karelian). Top stories: -Mstislav of Novgorod attacked against Poland. -Aimo's search for new marshall continues. -Local man saw a talking dog near Lake Ääninen (Onega).

Novgorod.jpg

My religious tolerance doesn't pay off. Members of that weird cult, who eat flesh and drink blood of their own god, start to revolt in Novgorod. I never trusted to those people. They are evil spirits who eat little children at night, so we hit wooden stakes through their hearts and kill them. When Novgorodians see this they decide to start worship proper gods. We do the same in Pihkova soon after.

Slowtotalk.jpg

Aimo, son of my wife who is named after me, is like his mother and doesn't speak to me. Well, maybe it's better that my wife doesn't speak, but my son must answer when I speak to him. Because he refused, I decided to show him who's the boss. I beat him in a fair fight. I wonder if he is even mine, because children of my family start speaking early and fight well. At the age of seven I sent my first born Urho to the army. Few years of conscript service do him good.

When we learn that former allies Novgorodians and Poles are now enemies, we declare war against the Mstislav. This time I will kick his ass for good. First I have to defeat his vassals though. I personally defeat in a duel countess Elena of Bezhetsky Verh, eight years old count Grigorii of Starya Russa, nine years old count Igor of Zaozerye and eleven years old Dmitrii of Chud. But because I'm tired and don't want to fight against the elderly people I allow my marshall to defeat eighty years old Dmitry count of Vologda.

Dmitry.jpg

While I'm on campaign my wife wrote me a letter. In that letter she says that my spy mistress has given birth to a boy and claims that boy is mine. My wife wants to take divorce, but I don't accept it because I don't want to give her half of my property. At the age of two my latest bastard declares that he will be also the future king of Karelians. It seems that for being great in my family you have to be a bastard, because my legitimate son is a coward and chose civil service instead of army. I want to disown him, but my wife won't let me.

After our conquests in the north, we start our long sailing from Novgorod to Kiova (Kiev). But apparently it's too hard to find the damn river and we take the long route. It's really annoying to carry your fleet with you. But finally we arrive to Kiova where Mstislav makes his last stand. And what a pathetic stand it is. He has less than 30 men. After the battle I feed him to my pet bears. End of my enemy was so anti-climatic that it makes me want to cry. I need proper nemesis.

Kiova.jpg

Meanwhile Poles have conquered the lands of the Ingrians. But Zbigniew count of Vodi decided to betray his king and declared independence. Idiot didn't realize that only thing which kept him alive was his king's protection. My allies the Votes attack against him and I don't want to miss the fun. There wasn't much fun though, because my late grandmother is more dangerous than these Poles. Viggu High Chief of Western Sames ask if he could marry my daughter. What does he think? I'm not going to give my daughter to pathetic Same. My daughter deserves better than tundras and glaciers.
