Will those be included?

In Byzantio, (Byzance) it was common 700 AD and on to create "defensive counties" in which a "Basileus" would nominate his own "Kat epano" who would in case of danger summon troops and lead on to war. He would use drafted free farmers, whose draft ended when "danger" was over. They were rendered useless, as after 1050 there were NO free farmers to speak of. (Nobles had bought them out along with their land.) In post 1066, they existed in name only, even if they were used as draft-able regions.

Early on there were big. Later on they grew smaller, (but comprising many of the provinces that the screenshot map shows.)

What shall it be like? A defensive overlay that comprises many of CK's counties that historically created a "Thema"?

Will it be used at all?

It wouldn't sound very difficult, given the game's current system of recruitment, to re-form the Thematic system. Since you're still levying folks, all that would change is the title of the guy doing the levying. Loyalty, piety, etc. are still important, since most of the really successful revolts in Medieval Byzantium were caused or led by themata.

Hopefully the themes will be used as they were still in existance. Including the ranks of Strategos, Catepan, and Dux. Lets not forget that the cream of the BYZ army wasnt annihilated until 1071(even though Konstantinos IX Monomachus had disbanded a large chunk of the elite).

if i understand correctly what you are asking, i would imagine the things you are asking for would be implemented simply as the relative ease by which a province can recruit soldiers (you'll notice that in eu each province has a different score); but since recruiting soldiers doesn't involve flavor text in eu, you probably wouldn't see any reference in writing

things like rank and army names might be taken into account in the files, though; if you look way down this forum (since we can't search) you'll see threads i started on what to call the armies and names for the various themes

As far as I understand it, there will only be one form of feudalism in CK, due to the simplifications necessary to produce a consistent engine. There will be different laws governing things such as inheritance and other stuff though. The screenshot gives some idea as to the different laws available.

I imagine the relationships between the Basileus and his vassals will be similar to other relationships present.
