The Think Tank

Firstly, Field Marshall Von Manstien is a god amoung ants. He starts off on the very tip of the Eastern front with one panzer division. For those of you who don't know him:

Skill 5
Offensive Doctrine
Trickster
Fortress Buster
Panzer Leader

Normandy isn't that hard to win. I put Von Manstien under control of the forces there and made sure I had a decent amount of reinforcements coming under strategic reserve.

This is the same plan as my previous AAR, but this time I am not going to mess around with anything other than cutting out the Russian's heart after Normandy. I will use trap tactics with panzers around Lvov, and to some degree let the rest of the front go to crap.

If you are trying to play this scenario without the a message popping up when you are attacked, it can't be done, just turn it on.

Lastly, there are a lot of divisions, both land and air with leaders that just don't fit. Taking the time to adjust the leader situation can help to some degree. Example, "tank busters" leading fighter divisions.

I thought your previous AAR was superb! The writing was not sub-par! :(

However, I must say, that newspaper is incredibly impressive! :D

I look forward to reading this AAR just as much (perhaps more ;)) than the previous one. But remember: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

That newspaper is just gorgeous! Well done!

However, maybe you should use spellcheck? I find it a little bit annoying with the spelling errors. I wouldn't publish an update myself without spellchecking it first.
 
Hi. A few tips for you:

- Don`t confuse Russia with the USSR. :D
- Disband some HQs. IIRC, you simply have LOADS of them; you can do very well with half or less, because you don`t need them in every province. And they eat oil...
- When you make a panzerkorps, always attach a motorized infantry division to it, so you get the combined arms bonus. Mech with Mot also works, but Panzer and Mech don`t.

Although it's obvious this man is making mistakes with his language, I must say there is people posting MUCH worse text (including myself, I'm afraid....) and that's why I hope you dont hang this man for his typo's. ;)

The plan sounds good. What are u going to do with Italy, though, is the thing I'd like to hear more. I suggest to be very carefull with that. I tried to take out as much as possible last time i played '44-scen, but i turned out to be too weak and those mean englishmen just walked through my puny lines.

Now for some follow up...

The fighting in Normandy was brutal. Manstein won out in the end, but barely. I would say if you want to ENSURE taking out those damn Americans and Brits, send Guderian and all of his Panzers via strategic reserve as well as armor from the Italian front. I made a calculated risk, using Guderian's armor for action in Russia instead, I wouldn't recommend it unless you are feeling lucky. I would almost consider "moving Guderian east" as the opening gambit of the scenario. I wonder if people use other tactics to rout the West.

If it wasn't clear before, I moved most of the Luftwaffe to France as well, because I did not open with Guderian -> West.

I usually leave around 7 divisions in each of those two provinces in Italy. This is fine for Normal/Normal. Watch out though, those Allies like to accumulate divisions there after being pushed out of Normandy.

As for Russia, like I said, I am going to break their hearts. I don't care how much oil I'm using, I need to make that damn red tide smaller. It seems easiest to do in the southern end of the front.

Has anyone every thought about using the Baltic Sea as a "hard place" in which you could let them gain ground, and then cut them off via the water. The plan would take more patience than I had.

Also, many of your troops start of far below full strength. In this particular game I started off by devoting a large amount of my ICs toward reinforcements in order to see immediate results in initial conflicts. I will slowly level the slider off, but getting troops up to full strength seemed more important than building new ones which won't arrive until much later anyway.

As I mentioned it seems pretty easy to stabilize Finland. The question is, is it worth it?

Spelling is important, and I will "attempt" to correct it. Also if you need more pictures in the "think tank" section, or want anything else from the AAR let me know.

Yes, I would like more pictures (in color) to supplement a newspaper image on each update ;)

Also, I would suggest taking those color pictures using my map color mod. (shameless plug) :)
 
He's black-and-white'ing them on purpose, y'know...
 
your aar is great so far, the previous one was very good too.

Good luck holding those reds, who knows, maybe you could reach the Urals and retake Italy?

Also, I'd like to see some economical info about Germany, how much IC, manpower and resources you do have?
 
Yeah, I do think that Finland might be kinda good to hold beacuse well, many Soviet forces will probaly be "pinned down" here and try to retreat and encirle the Russiansup there......
Plus in Finland you can threaten Leningrad ;)

As per requested here are some of the action shots from the summer fighting that raged on the Eastern Front.

This is the "Beltsy Pocket", an offensive that took place before the troops from Normandy could attend the fun. As you can see, around 20 Soviet divisions ate the turd in this encirclement.

After the Beltsy Pocket, the Soviets pushed their front back to the river, but 40 divisions from Normandy showed up on their right flank, and I decided to eat their heart. Going for large encirclements is tricky business, but those Russians seemed much more concerned with Minsk.

I'm not sure how many lost their heads in this one, but it was around 20. Afterwards I had the option of a breakout. The Soviets force strength in the area was crushed, and their is some SERIOUS energy provinces in the theater, but my troops needed some damn rest, they've been busy. Plus those Romanians took the good provinces that offer around 125 energy a day each to the Soviets. I am going to let the Russians retake that so i can reclaim it under a German flag.

Notes:
I'm sure everyone already knows this, but the Soviets hate "clumps" of troops. I.E they are much more catious around one army of 30 than 3 of ten spread along the front. They love smashing little armies, so that is why my armies tend to look clumped in the screenshots.

Lets not forget those brave fins....

I began to notice that the Soviets weren't reinforcing the area, so I made them pay. There was a rope-a-dope move early, where I allowed around 3 Soviet divisions through my line, only to smash them once they got through.

Depending on your difficulty, it is better to throw a lot of your men into on section of the front rather than a continous front of even strength. You need to wipe out that damn Soviet troop advantage, who cares if they take ground somewhere else. Just use blobs of infantry to slow them down while the panzers have their fun in the weaker part of the front...

I honestly wonder whats next....

I've been burning an insane amount of oil, and manpower is getting low. Will the winter allow them to put enough men in the south to end my fun? Will they go bonkers in the north and start a 1945 spring march toward Berlin?

This scenario always seems to suprise me.....
