Are you currently running a firewall? If so, see the Support FAQ (link in my sig) re opening specific ports necessary to play.

I wonder if there is some problem with the Binkplayer remaining resident? Try renaming your avi folder to avi_old in case that's causing it.

Also, are all of your drivers up to date (sound/video/modem/etc.) and have you got all the Windows updates installed?

I always just delete the avi directory; and the graphics/sound/windows updates were the latest as of about a month ago, and because my hardware's old new drivers don't come out often (if at all). I seriously doubt that graphics/sound could be the probably, anyway - as I described, it seems to be some kind of freeze on attempting to connect to a channel, so a very clear network problem. Which theoretically should be easy to pin down, as it's unfortunately totally reproducible.

Note also that other people in that thread were having the same behaviour, but intermittently.

Do you have any non-system programs running in the background at all? (e.g. Outlook, ICQ, Messenger, Fax software, etc.)

Hmm, forgot to try that this time... (checking) only the packet driver for my CD-RW, it seems (apart from the essentials: rnaapp for the dial-up connection, Systray, explorer and rundll).

I'll go and check it without the CD-RW driver in the background.

Ok, tried it again. Still nothing.

Oh, I forgot to mention that it needs several tries to get a list of channels, and often some of the channels are greyed out, and I have to go back and re-enter to get them up. Is this normal?

*checking with higher authorities*

In the interim, could you give me your connection specifics (modem mke/model/driver...)

Sure:

It's a nasty softmodem (Aztech MDP-3800 I think, but I'd have to open the computer to be sure about that number, as I'm using a generic driver), with some conexant chipset.

Driver date: 2.1.2.171.026

Since I've updated to the latest driver it's been very reliable though; connect at 52kbps every time.

Thanks for all this effort; much appreciated, as I really would like to try out MP EU2.

Can you give us some system specs pls.
Atleast the operating system CPU and memory?

If you read the information in the link in the first post, the ones I considered important are given. To repeat:

Win98SE, P3 550, 256mb RAM

And things I haven't yet said:
Creative SB AudioPCI (the Ensoniq rip off)
NVidia TNT2 M64, 32mb

Could you please try doing the following:

1. Do a complete uninstall of EU2 (see FAQ sticky for details on special procedures).

2. Re-install from CD but don't patch the game. Re-name or delete the avi folder and then try connecting to v-Net.

3. If #2 works, patch to 1.06 and try again.

4. If #3 works, patch to 1.07 and try again.

5. If #4 works, add each beta patch one at a time until either everything's current and working, or you run into a problem.

Let me know where (if at all) in the above you get stuck since that will help us track down the problem (or eliminate some possible areas of issue).

Sorry for putting you through this, but we'll keep working at it until we figure it out. :)

Edit: note that links to the 1.06 patch are at the bottom of the "The current patch is..." sticky at the top of the forum.

Hmm, painful. I'll get to it as soon as I backup some stuff, as eu2 needs a fair bit of space to install (4gb isn't covering what it used to...)

Ok, running into trouble with 1.0, but different trouble at least.

When I select a channel, it says 'Changing channel', then about one second later a dialog box pops up saying 'You were disconnected'. So, no longer freezing on selecting a channel, but I still can't get in (I never see player names, etc.).

I've consulted with Johan who has no clue as to why you're having problems. There must be something strange either related to hidden firewall (or firewall-like) settings enabled, or maybe there's some sort of intrinsic problem relating to your ISP's connections somehow. Do you have the ability to try connecting from a computer using a different ISP?

Yes, I could, but my other option unfortunately involves a non-unique IP... will this work? It works, for example, with aoe2 as a client but not hosting, but from what you've said about firewalls and such-like I'd guess no for eu2. I suppose the easiest thing to do is try it... next time I connect to the internet.

If that doesn't work, I'll try and grab someone elses ISP account details for a day.

It would certainly be worth trying it just to see if you can connect - although I suspect you're right that you wouldn't be able to host.

It would be worth trying a friend's ISP connection for a day to see if that resolves it. Also worth trying to connect through your ISP but with the game loaded in a different computer to see which is the problem.

Exactly the same problem with the second ISP I tried (with 1.00, attempting to connect to a channel led to a 'You have been disconnected' message after about a second).

Is there any diagnostic tool I could use on my connection to see if there's some problem between my computer and Vnet? Or to find out if there's some kind of odd firewall or NAT thing at my ISP's end (I really have no idea what I'm talking about here...)?
