Hey all, I'm wondering if anyone would like to get a game together. My requirements would be 6 to 10pm central, (which is what, -6 GMT? not sure how daylight savings effects that) on any single day from Monday through Thursday. I figure leaving the weekends out would be a good idea, as those are the days people would be most likely to noshow.

I personally use DAIM, and a few other event and bug fixes. I could provide the files as it seems to do pretty well. If everyone wanted to play plain jane vanilla with the MP fix, I can switch back. Although DAIM seems to put up a pretty good struggle! House rules can be discussed. Just fishing to see if anyone is even interested right now. It doesn't have to be a large amount of players either. If there's even one or two that want to play, I'm up for it. Fewer is better sometimes :)

You actually took longer to point me there then I expected. I know about the site, don't want to post there just yet :) Thanks anyways.

I'm up for games any night save sat/sun... always willing to play MP

Reply here, PM me or IM me with more specifics once you have them:
AIM - Princedetenebres

I have a ton of experience playing the UK (I've played them in at least 8 MP games - though only about half finished, 1 in progress) but I'm perfectly willing to play just about anyone... anytime

hi,

i'm also interested. currently we are a 3 player group, in eastern u.s. and would like to set up a twice a week game, typically around 7:30 to 11:00, we can make and almost always make firm times.

we are a friendly group, casual and open to suggestions for house rules, especially ones that gear the game toward a more historical feel, though again open to anything as long as it makes sense.

i think that 5 players would be optimal, cover the most important countries and not be too out of hand for scheduling.

this is the setup we use currently, thought we can be flexible if need be:

patch 1.2
change to misc.txt file to fix manpower bug
units files (only) from the stoney road mod (the files under the 'divisions' folder).

if you are interested, please contact me directly at coloneldylan@hotmail.com

thanks,

dylan

Okay, so we are looking at possibly two groups forming:

jonnyincognito, wright1331, DesertFoxx, fearlessdylan (and Co.) -- avail. 630pm to 10pm Central, mon - fri (730pm to 11pm Eastern)

Eloso & Oddity-- 730pm to 11pm Central mon - fri (530pm to 8pm Pacific)

I simply can't play past ten pm because I have to be to work by six in the morning. So, with Eloso emailing me and Oddity posting here, maybe a second later in the evening group would also be advisable?

Everyone that's still interested, give me a list of three nations you'd like to play in order that you'd like to play them. Sounds like fearlessdylan already wants the UK. Fine by me, it's too busy a country to play for me :O I commend you to be able to play them! Anyone that wants to drop out, please say so, just so we aren't relying on you and find out you aren't coming when the game starts.

fearlessdylan, I read your post, and we'd have six with you, your two friends, wright1331, DesertFoxx, and myself for any game I'd be included in. We could even set up two seperate games on two seperate days of the week to include Oddity and Eloso. While a twice weekly game would be better, I'm not sure we can get everyone to agree on it. Does anyone have ANY days that they won't be able to make it? Make sure you ask your significant others too. I don't want to hear any 'oh I couldn't play because my wife/girlfriend wanted to go out for dinner that night' excuses! :D For me, my prefered days to play would be Tuesday and/or Thursday.

House rules and specific files will need to be discussed, but lets get whos playing when and with whom straight first :) Did you guys want to take this to email, or just keep it here on the forums? I don't want anyone being left out because we all weren't clear about where to go for information.

I'd definately like to peruse the SR files that you guys are using though. I'm assuming that they give a more historically accurate build and combat scheme to the game? I've got some small changes that I play with, but nothing I can't do without.

The times are cool by me (Friday). I can't guarentee being available at 630 PM CST. I could do 730 PM to 1000 PM if that's an option.

As for modded files I might have some issues. I am already running a dual install. One which is vanilla 1.2 with the manpower bug fix. That one has to stay pristine for my other MP game on Saturdays. The other one has everything modded from graphics to events. I'd prefer to not have to run a third directory only to save myself from becoming confused.

As for house rules, I'm reallly not interested in anything wacky happening like France joining the Comintern or USA joining the Nazis. I'd prefer to keep the alliances of the major players historical. Also Germany doesn't stand a chance if the USA joins the Allies prior to their actual entry date.

My preferences for play are in the following order:

USA
Nationalist China
Japan

I'm open to other suggestions for house rules to keep the game "real". I was lurking in the general forums and saw that two guys were spatting over how they exploited each other.

I saw that too. I think Russia was being gamey by exploiting the system, but in return, Germany's retalitory gameyness was a great move :) Such things should probably be disallowed.

I don't know how the mods directory works, but we could look into that. It's supposed to allow you to have only one install of the HoI game but with multiple mods allowed.

Joshua

Jeez, using the mod directory is so simple its child’s play! For any mods that might be considered, I can easily create a downloadable zip file with all the files and folder structure for the MP game.

Now I wonder what house rules should be imposed? Vanilla is clearly lacking in some areas. I pose the following questions as I wait for you all to respond on the above posted times and the possibility of two games on two different days...

As noted by the use of HSR unit files by fearless, unit stats are over/underpowered in some key areas. What changes if any should we make regarding these? What about MODs in general? I personally *LOVE* DAIM. It makes the AI much more aggressive, intelligent, and competent, but sometimes ahistorical.

It's all open for discussion. Here's a set of rules ruthlessly commandeered from a different site, http://xsorbit25.com/users5/hoiplayers/, as an idea starter.

RULES

1. Resource Trading:

1.1. The Axis will trade on January 2, 1936
1.2. The Allies and USSR may not trade until the game has been started after Axis trading
1.3. The Allies and USSR may not trade for rares unless their IC gives them a deficit of rares
1.4. Players may accept any trade offered by an AI nation
1.5.1 Players may only initiate trade deals with the US at 100%.
1.5.2 After Lend-Lease, Allies are allowed to initiate trades at 50%.
1.5.3 After SU is DOW'ed by Axis, SU is allowed to initiate trades with US at 50%.
1.5.4 US is allowed to trade freely with any nation that is in war with the same enemy as the US.

2. Diplomacy

2.1. No nation is allowed to Ally any of the parties in the SCW. This lasts untill Vichy fired.
2.2. Couping of player controlled countries is forbidden.
2.3. No crazy alliances, like comintern France or Allied Japan.
2.4. France is not allowed to 'liberate' any nation till Jan 1st, '41

3. Events

3.1. Game will be saved prior to Anschluss, Sudetenland and Munich Event. Should the Event go unhistorical, the German player is allowed to ask for a rehost of prior save. Should the German decide to accept unhistorical outcome, 3.1. is void.
3.2. France must accept Vichy if offered.
3.3. SU must accept Bitter Peace if offered.

4. USA

US is allowed to join Allies/DOW Axis if domestic sliders permit when:
4.1. December 7, 41
4.2. Immediately after UK has been invaded. Repelling an invasion resets this counter
4.3. 2 Months after Japan is at war with the Allies or SU
4.4. Immediately after any invasion of an American country
4.5. Immediately after any 2 key SU cities are taken (Leningrad, Moscow, Stalingrad)
4.6. Immediately after any 2 key SU cities are surrounded.

5. SU and the MR-Pact

5.1. The Unholy Alliance may not be offered
5.2. The Pact is fully negotiable between the Axis and Comintern Players, and may include trade deals, spheres of influence, duration, etc. We expect players to honor aggreements made this way.

6. China

6.1. China is not allowed to join Allies prior to US involvement in the war

7. General

7.1. No use of any exploits
7.2. No 'phoney-wars' - Wars declared should be fought to a peace or annexation (ie. no eternal wars with Ethiopia as Italy or a Chinese warlord as Japan)
7.3. Play mean, but fair
7.4. No more than 12 divisions may conduct an amphibious invasion from transports. Divisions committed to the battle by other means do not count against the 12-division limit
7.5. No influencing player nations or the United States
7.6. No more than 48 divisions may garrison an urban capital

I have issues with quite a few of these rules, but it’s not a bad place to start.

I'm all up for a mod directory. I have one set up for the Austria mod in my fubar HOI installation but according to the Wiki it is broken in MP:

http://hoi2.nsen.ch/wiki/index.php/Mods_and_Modding

It's on the page towards the bottom.

I've also noticed some odd behavior with certain files in my mod directory. For instance, graphic mods for units or skins don't work; they have to go into the default installation. Custom events work but I'm having trouble with ones that aren't named in the events.txt file from a vanilla install. I can add them to the vanilla portion and they'll work but they won't work in the mod directory. I may be doing something wrong or it could just be half functional. I don't know.

As for those rules you've posted the only two I see that are really objectionable are the no rockets and no influencing players. I'd rather see rockets in the game as well as the diplomatic feature. An alternative would be to have to request permission to influence a player prior to doing so.

As for DAIM if you have a game with six humans I don't think its really needed. 3 people on the Axis and 3 on the Allied side and it should be just fine. Obviously that would be the USA, UK, USSR, Germany, Italy, and Japan. From my understanding, DAIM was designed for single player players looking for an extra challenge because the default AI lacks the creativity to compete with a human brain. It might work great if you're short on bodies to fill the slots but otherwise it's not necessary IMHO.

Jonny:

The moddir function does not work in multiplayer. You can play a multiplayer game all you want, but when you try to reload your save for a new session, you'll discover that you can't. Paradox knew about this before 1.2, but chose not to fix it. The only way to run more than one version for multiplayer is to have a separate install for each version.

Yep, stolen as an example of a good solid set of house rules. If it's a problem, I'll remove them :) Didn't think I'd be stepping on anyone's toes when I posted them. In retrospect, the polite thing would have been to ask. Just wasn't thinking. :D

CURSES! Has a work around using the moddir been discovered? I might have to look at this at home this weekend. What happens when you try to reload the save?

If memory serves, it compresses repeatedly until you cancel. I do not believe there is a workaround. You just have to make two installs. Copy your base "vanilla" install to a new folder, then load the mod in that folder.

I'm reading through search results on the topic right now actually. Nice to see that it's not likely to get fixed  I'll probably have a clean install, and then just move copy the files back and forth as needed. It's a lot less memory consuming to only move txt and csv files for the game then having a copy of everything. What a pain...
