Short summary of your issue
Repeated Crash to Desktop when I have not even started the game

Game Version
1.0.3 Vanilla

What OS are you playing on?
Windows

Do you have mods enabled?
No

Have you tried verifying your game files?
Yes

How much "pain" is this causing you?
10

Please explain the issue you experienced in the most condensed way possible
I have started a new game using the tutorial mission of Sweden. I was reading the first lesson (about 4 pages in) and the game crashed. Since that point I have multiple Crash to Desktop after just a few moments. I have lost some of the first lesson, created a save and continued from this, no difference. I have not even been able to unpause the game, as it just crashes within about five minutes of starting up the game.

Please explain how to reproduce the issue
I am not sure how you can reproduce the issue, as this seems to be on my PC. The specs of the PC are extremely good and would be easily able to start the game on High. but I have started on medium and V-sync is enabled. I am using the most recent Nvidia drivers.

Is there anything else you think could help us identify/replicate the issue?
I don't know, I don't think I am doing anything specific for the game to crash.
There is also a second issue, which is I cannot move the mouse cursor from the right hand side of the screen, it is completely stuck and shaking rapidly. I have a Logictech G502 Hero mouse and use Logitech G-Hub, but have also ended this program and used a different mouse, with the same result.

I have attached a save game
Yes

Hi, Ruzhyo46,

Thanks for the report and sorry to hear you've been unable to play the game! This looks like it may be an issue with caches, so please try the following steps first:
1. Go to Documents/Paradox Interactive/Victoria 3 and if you see shadercache + terraincache folders, delete them
2. Go to Steam and verify the game files
3. Reboot your PC
Please check if the game runs then and make sure to update us! Hope it'll allow you to keep playing. Thanks in advance :)

Hi Corvus, thanks for your reply. I managed to get into the game and play for about 5 minutes, but then there was another CTD. I was not doing anything intensive, just setting up a couple of buildings.

As has been mentioned in a couple of other places, there seems to have been a GPU spike at the time of the crash, which is odd as I have a RTX 3070! Is there anything else I can do to stop the CTD's?

Thanks in advance :)

Still having the same issue, repeated CTD's after a few moments. Things I have tried that have not worked:

Update Windows including cumulative update and all driver updates for all devices.
Bypassing the launcher and running in Administrator mode - no difference, another CTD.
Changed Nvidia GPU setting in Control Panel to disable low latency and turn on Optimise threads - no difference, another CTD.

What I have noticed after crashes is there is a spike to GPU usage on Task Manager around the time this happens. This occurs whether V-Sync is active or not. I have also tried setting a maximum frame rate of 60 FPS, but there was another CTD shortly after.

I have the same problem. Sometimes was able to play for a hour even.
I try all the steps mention Here :

I also check if my CPU work with AVX as here: (its required for the game to work and new AMD do not support it)

After all the driver fixing I got the problem to not be able to run from launcher (Visual C++ Redistributable -> i reinstall all of it) is still working from game files, but only a couple of minutes (once is crash in game menu). Sometimes it crash to pulpit and sometimes it just restart my computer.

In documents/victoria3/crashes are 4 folders but it crash hundred times now.

Any idea will be welcome.

Thanks for your help Kuzder. I have an i9-12900K which does have AVX. I've done everything about except the C++ reinstall, as I'm not having any errors regarding C++ not being up to date etc. I am also not having this problem with other games, so I am really stuck as to what could be causing this and how to fix it.

I have it fixed. So I spend many hours trying to find what was the problem and at some point my PC just stop to work. I give it to professionals and they said my SDD have bad sectors and at this point is not functioning. They change it to new one reinstall system and now the game is working perfectly.
Not sure if it is any help to You but that's what work for me.

Wish You luck bro!

Dude, thank you for the suggestion. It seemed to have worked and I was able to play for an hour, but I am having some crashes now. I appreciate the help

Issue persists in 1.0.5 vanilla.

Full list of what I have tried so far (updated from the list above):

Followed advice from Duke Corvus above - game continued to CTD
Update Windows including cumulative update and all driver updates for all devices.
Bypassing the launcher and running in Administrator mode - no difference.
Enabled V-Sync - no difference
Disabled V-Sync and set a Frame rate cap in game - no difference.
Changed Nvidia GPU setting in Control Panel to disable low latency and turn on Optimise threads - no difference.
Moved game from SSD to HDD - I was able to play the game for about an hour without a crash on one occasion, but then CTD's resumed.
I have gone through the articles posted by Kuzder above, the only thing I have not done the C++ delete and reinstall, as I am not getting a C++ error.
Changed in game settings to the lowest possible graphics (despite having an RTX 3070 and i9-12900K) - allows 5-10 minutes in game time before CTD

I am still using the crash report feature and will continue to upload the crash logs here, as apart from getting increasingly frustrated I don't know what else to do right now. Any suggestions gratefully received!

Just letting you know that we're gathering the info you've provided and looking into it. If you are able to upload any other logs/crash dumps that'd be very helpful!
Thanks for the update Corvus. Third batch of crashes attached, if there is anything else you need please let me know

Thank you! Unfortunately, at the moment, this looks like a hardware issue, potentially tied to hard drive (like in Kuzder's case, although I see that changing drives hasn't helped), GPU or memory, which would mean that it wouldn't be something that's fixable on our end. Will be back with an update if we find out anything else!

Thanks for the update Corvus. That is quite worrying, as my PC is less than six months old and is a high end system. What is even more strange is that I'm not having similar problems with any other games in my library. I'll speak to the supplier of the computer and see if they can offer any advice.

Further update. I did some tests myself, as much as my technical ability allowed to attempt to see if there was anything immediately obvious with the HD (s) GPU or memory. Nothing out of the ordinary. So I paid for a certified software engineer to look into what is happening.
Over the last couple of nights the engineer has:

*Checked and reinstalled the graphics drivers.
*Ran a full memory test - no problems with the memory at all.
*Ran disk checks on both HDD's - no issues came back.
*Completed a full re-install of Windows 11 (admittedly keeping all of my data)
None of these made any difference.

*I also re-installed the C++ Redistributables as per this post - https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/threads/victoria-3-error.1557735/ - though I could not get Update 3 RC to install.
*Finally, I did another uninstall-reinstall of the game. I didn't do a clean re-install by deleting the folders this time.

I boot up the game to see if the last two things I tried worked. And finally, I manage to play the game for four hours. Without a crash. Amazing. Love the game, was playing Japan, trying to gradually industrialise - just what I was hoping for.

BUT

I have to get up to make coffee/food etc. So I save and exit. When I press exit to desktop and go to Steam, the game gives me a Crash Report box.

Oh no.

Bear in mind, I had asked the game to Exit to Desktop - it did not crash in that session. However when I go back into the game about half an hour later, the game allows me to load in and start playing. Then I get another CTD within 5 minutes of booting back up. I nearly cried I was that frustrated.

I have uploaded the last three crash logs. The second of the three is the one after the four hours of gameplay and looks very different to the other exceptions that I have. All of the crashes have the same exception, just with different combinations of letters and numbers at the "address" (example below):

Unhandled Exception C0000005 (EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION) at address 0x00007FF75B1FDE9E

When I get a few hours to play I will do another uninstall-reinstall and see if that allows an extended gameplay session. But I'm at a loss what to do next. Any ideas?

Virtually every crash with every app from any cause is recorded as a C0000005 error, so I'm afraid that doesn't tell us much.

Two of your exception logs show it in victoria3.exe but the other is completely different, as you say, being in ntdll.dll (part of Windows). Hard to draw a good conclusion from that!

@Duke Corvus do those new minidumps help diagnose the issue?

I get the exact same results running this game on MacOS (Big Sur) on an Intel based MacBook Pro.
I bought this game on Steam less than an hour ago. Did this game even get tested?

@General Buck Turgidson That is interesting. My CPU is Intel., but that is the only similarity between our systems, I am using Windows 11 on an i9-12900K 12th Gen and Nvidia GPU.
