This is Brigadier General Sinclair calling to HQ. I have received reports it seems that Warsaw Pact forces are approaching the town from both north and south. Even more troubleshooting it seems the spear of their offensive is only several kilometers away from the NATO supply route. If they cut it I don't think I have to explain what kind of situation we will be in. I am authorizing my brigade to move Northwest along the supply line five to six tiles and then to engage Warsaw Pact forces north of there. I call for support from the artillery regiment to soften them up before we get there in addition I want recon to be done before we reach the location so I have some idea what my forces are getting into here. The situation is critical. Sinclair out.

Move the 1st Battalion 5 tiles north east on the NATO Supply Route (sense it's a road I am guessing I get to move extra tiles) then move the Battallion north until they engage WarPact Forces. Move the 2nd Battallion 7 tiles north west on the road and then 1 tile north and 1 tile east in order to engage in a flanking movement on the WarPact contingent.

The Fulda-Gap. Of course. How many times had he seen these movements during war games. Unfortunately this time it was not a drill. A red storm was raging across Germany and just like he had always feared, there was probably not enough to stop them before they reach the Main river.

Brigadier Richard "Dick" Schulz leaned back. Since he had joined the army, he always wanted a command in Germany, where his family had come from in the mid 19th century. His father had fought here during World War 2. And now he would fight here, but this time with the Germans, not against them. He wondered, why the Commies came now, when Gorbachov was talking about Perestroika and stuff. But it did not matter.

He took a look at the map. Bad Kreuznach was basically safe, but the Reds had landed some units north and south of the city. Probably light units. Paratroopers. It should not be too difficult to keep the supply routes open. But a good offensive was the best defense.

Orders 3rd Brigade:
5th Battalion - Advance 5 hexes southwest and engage the enemy
6th Battalion - Advance 3 hexes southeast and then 1 hex south. Hold position.

PotatoMan: If possible, send some Mechanized Support to the southwest
Dr. Livingstone: I don`t know what the guys in the woods are up to, but please reserve some artillery support for my boys in the southeast just in case they come under attack

((i'll act as division commander until we get someone to take over))

"General Sinclair, I will task your brigade with eradicating enemy elements north of Bad Kreuznach, I will assign a recon unit to deliver intelligence on enemy positions and 1st Artillery will be attached to your brigade, direct strike requests to artillery command."

1 x Recon Unit attached to 3rd Brigade. 2nd Artillery Regiment attached to 3rd brigade. The artillery commander is ordered to execute artillery bombardment of targets designated by 3rd Brigade commander.

"Commanders, with 1st and 3rd Brigades designated to eradicate enemy elements further away from the highway and the city I will order 2nd Brigade to hold Bad Kreuznach and defend it from attack. Division armor shall be tasked with patrolling and holding the highway. Please send in orders and tactics so that we may commence."

2nd Brigade ordered to hold and defend Bad Kreuznach. Mechanized Brigade is ordered to patrol and protect the highway. 3rd, 4th, and 5th Artillery may assist both brigades as requested. Aviation (helicopters) is ordered to stand at alert in case our boys in the field need transportation.

"We only have 3 x Close-Air Support and 5 x Recon Units, so we will need to use our support sparingly. What is the opinion of the commanders in regard to these plans?"

From: 3rd Brigade
To: Division HQ

Request to drop our Recon Unit in the woods to the southeast in order to report on enemy strength and movements. Delta Force is not, I repeat: NOT, to engage the enemy. Commanders of 5th and 6th Battalion are permitted to request Artillery support from 2nd Artillery Regiment as they deem necessary.

3rd Brigade supports the plan to let 2nd Brigade secure the city. Establishment of fortified positions by Engineer units advised. At least one Mechanized Regiment and all Helicopters should support the push northward. Open terrain beneficial for tanks and air support.

Scenario I - The Bear Emerges

Week 2 (March 19th thru March 29th, 1987)

WarPact forces by sunrise on March 12th had gained a solid foothold on the other side of the Fulda Gap. With Fulda captured the Soviets began to flood the region with supplies and reinforcements. The 8th Soviet Guards Army was clearly responsible for taking the central highway of the gap as its regular troops and airborne were found both on the east and west bank of the Rhine River. But their lighting campaign to the Rhine was halted at Frankfurt and Wiesbaden as they were forced to fight a protected urban battle in those cities with NATO forces. Still they held the highway and were channeling supplies and reinforcements to both battlefields without harassment. On the west bank of the Rhine the 8th Infantry Division were tasked with defending NATO's supply route to the front as well as the eradication of enemy elements on their side. The west bank was swarming with airborne troops who consolidated in the towns of Abmannshsn, Bingen, Woorstadt, and Ingelheim. Strategically this situation changed little during much of the week although Abmannshsn was secured by NATO forces on March 23rd and Bingen lost two laters after. Woorstadt and Ingelheim are experiencing stalemates and will require additional support and reinforcements to be secured. Bad Kreuznach remains secure but the loss of Bingen is worrying, if 1st Brigade cannot eliminate enemy airborne and special forces units at at Bingen we could see the enemy open up a stable front behind our line on the other side of the Rhine.

The battle for the skies began shortly after the invasion of West Germany. The air force has been flying missions day and night mostly in an effort to repel enemy bombers which has so far been successful in reducing WarPact firepower in the air in the Fulda Gap. On the North German Plain the advance of WarPact forces has stagnated but bombing runs by WarPact have been more successful. NATO armies have fortified our positions at Hamberg, Lubeck, and Bremen where major battles are currently being fought. In the south the Soviets have faltered, their plan to use the Danube as a third entry point is failing due to fierce resistance at Ingolstadt by the West German army and logistical problems. It looks as though WarPact has lowered the priority of their campaign along the Danube as our bombing runs have been coming through without nearly the same degree of hassle elsewhere. But bombing raids on civilian and industrial targets have seen widespread casualties into the tens of thousands already. Paris, Marseille, Strasbourg, even London have suffered extensive bombing damage. Currently there is a large number of refugees abandoning the cities en masse due to the severity of the bombing.

What the Pentagon and our allies are still waiting on is an invasion of North America. It is clear from satellite imagery that WarPact is prepared for such an invasion but nobody knows why they haven't commenced as of now. There is significant build up of air and naval forces in the Pacific and dozens of new bases throughout Siberia and the eastern provinces of the Soviet Union with troops moving to the coast. It is thought that WarPact is waiting to see what happens in Europe and if their objectives aren't meant in the strategic time frame they have planned out that they will fall to a plan B and concentrate on controlling Europe. Currently French and British forces are being moved to the Belgium and Alsace theaters where they will await the enemy and if possible support the fight in West Germany. For now we have been ordered to continue with operations from Week 1. Command wants the west bank cleared but as long as we hold on to the highway and Bad Kreuznach and all goes well elsewhere we will be able to halt WarPact's momentum in the Fulda Gap.

Briefing:

8th Infantry Division is ordered to hold on the west bank and ensure that the highway and Bad Kreuznach remains in allied hands. Reports indicate that enemy airborne elements have taken a number of villages and towns on our side of the Rhine. But without armor and artillery support their advance has stalled. Our principal concern is taking control of Bingen where airborne elements of the 8th SGA stands poised to assault Mainz if we can't push them out. Reports are being received of enemy elements in a dozen towns and villages on the west bank and traveling through forest areas. Special forces units have been harassing them as much as possible but we need regular infantry to flush them out. Their success however hinges on establishing forward operating positions in Woorstadt, Ingelheim, and Bingen as we cannot commit our troops if they are needed in an urban battle.

Pathfinders must take hold of the remaining towns in the lower west bank if we are to prevent another front from opening up on the opposite side of the Rhine River. If we can't take these towns we will be hard pressed to take them any other time with the focus on Wiesbaden and Frankfurt. Command is relying on the 8th Infantry Division to secure the rear and every day the enemy is allowed to roam the west bank means less of a chance that the Rhine can be defended and the possibility that NATO's supplies and reinforcements will be cut off from the Fulda Gap.

Objectives:

  • Continue to hold Bad Kreuznach and protect the NATO Supply Route
  • Bingen especially but also Woorstadt and Ingelheim must not fall or remain in enemy hands or else a direct attack on the NATO Supply Route will commence.
Support:

3 x Recon
3 x Close-Air Support (precision strikes)

Sinclair came into Abmannshsn two days after liberation setting up his new forward operating base there. Looking around he could see the town was devastated the corpses of dead American and Soviet soldiers had been left where they had fallen. He could see smoke rising from several burned out tanks and could see the ruins of bombed out houses as he entered the town. As he read the reports from the battle he was shocked to learn that he had lost half of 2nd Battalion in the battle for Abmannshsn. Later that night he reviewed the reports from Bingen as well. The attack had failed the artillery by itself had not done enough to weaken the Soviets. Now he would need to apply more force in order to secure the town. He proceeded to issue orders to his boys.

This is Brigadier General Sinclair. To the CO of 2nd Battalion orders are to rest up and dig in at Abmannshsn with your men we cannot afford to loose more of you otherwise there won't be a battalion to give orders to. To the CO of 1st Battalion prepare for another assault on Bingen. To the 1st and 3rd Artillery Brigades support is requested please commence shelling on Bingen. To the CO of the First Armored Brigade attack Bingen from the west side of the town in coordination with the 1st Battalion. I also request support from the 2nd Brigade 3rd Battalion and ask them to assist in the attack on Bingen.

From: 3rd Brigade
To: Division HQ

3rd Brigade could engage all enemy forces in the south. 5th Battalion has still more than 90% combat power, 6th Battalion slightly under 90%. Enemy suffered clearly higher casualties. Will commence attack in order to clear Woorstadt and Ingelheim of enemy presence.

Orders for 3rd Brigade:

5th Battalion - Engage enemy in Woorstadt
6th Battalion - Engage enemy in Ingelheim

Requests:

PotatoMan - 2nd Armor Regiment not necessarily needed anymore. Please report, whether it will remain with 5th Battalion in Woorstadt or gets transferred eastward to support battle for Bingen

Dr. Livingstone - Request fire support of 2nd Artillery Regiment for Ingelheim and 3rd Artillery Regiment for Woorstadt.

President Ronald Reagan Addresses The American People

March 29th, 5 PM - White House

"My fellow Americans, a great crisis has risen to challenge the forces of democracy and capitalism in the world. At three o clock West German time the forces of communist tyranny crossed the border through three pathways. The Danube River, Fulda Gap, and the North German Plain. Their armies moved swiftly and NATO commanders engaged the enemy at over two dozen cities and hundreds of other locations. Their aircraft began the heavy bombing of major civilian and industrial targets throughout Western Europe and our pilots responded by destroying nearly twenty nine bombers last week. On the seas the 5th Fleet deployed to the North Sea fault and won a battle against the Soviets which saw the sinking of six submarines, ten frigates, and one aircraft carrier of the enemy's. Our losses were relatively small with four frigates and five submarines lost."

"It is important to understand and accept that we are now engaged in a global war which stands as the final obstacle to the success of liberal democracy in history. By my order approved by Congress the conscription of ten million soldiers will commence. Including all inactive reserve personnel and those aged 18 thru 40 years of age shall be called in groups to serve for a period of no longer than twenty four months. The production of war materials shall fall to those left at home. There will be rationing but rest assured that in all theaters of war the United States and its allies hold the advantage. Our Strategic Defense Initiative system worked. For eight days there has not been an attempt to launch nuclear missiles by either side. With SDI safe within the confines of the North America we have tipped balance toward our brave men and women who are fighting now on the plains and cities of West Germany."

"No attempt has been made by those in Moscow or any enemy capital to initiate peace talks even though NATO has extended its hand twice in seven days. It is the West that holds the moral high ground and it is the West that will prevail for future generations to live in peace and freedom."

Ingelheim
Sunday, 29th March 1987

Sergeant Thomas Baker could rest a bit and he enjoyed it. So that`s it. The commies are here. Of course, they have always been the enemy, but so far he did not have any hard feelings toward the Ivan. This changed a lot these days.

Ingelheim. One of these typical German small towns. Maybe twenty thousand people. One or two more or less large churches and lots of old houses around them. Some new residential areas from after the World War, when the population increased. But at the end of the day it is backcountry, where never something interesting happens.

Unless there is war, then a lot of foreigners pass through. He assumed, that the Americans did maybe stop for a few minutes, when they got to the town back in 1945, but that was all Ingelheim had seen of World War 2. This time it was different. While the Russian main force was pushing through the Fulda Gap, paratroopers were trying to reach the Autobahn leading to Mainz in order to cut the supply for the Allied forces on the other side of the Rhein.

But this would only happen when he and the rest of the 6th Battalion would fail. Ingelheim was now the focus of operations for the whole Battalion. He did bet, that the population would not recognize their city, for the Artillery had fired some rounds into it. A few destroyed and burning houses. Lots of burst windows, even at the large church near the center.

Unfortunately there was no alternative to continue. They had to push forward and repel the enemy attack. When he looked around, he saw the soldiers of his group. Young boys, who had to mature faster than anyone expected. Losses within the Battalion had not been to high so far, although there were first casualties. Maybe ten men, who would return in a coffin. Plus a lot more wounded, among them Private Washington from his group.

"Sergeant.". His Lieutenant appeared.
"Sir."
"Okay, our Company is supposed to flank the enemy positions here in the west, while another one will try the same in the east. If we can put more pressure on Ivan`s units south of the church by threatening the flanks, he will have to regroup or retreat."
"Yes, Sir. ALRIGHT BOYS, GET UP. WE HAVE GOT OUR ORDERS."

Colonel Harvey Curtiss Barnum, Jr. a.k.a Barney a Vietnam war hero with several medals stand in command post in Bad Kreuznach and look over map. Sergeants from each battalion stand next to him.

"Commies has crossed the line, they will never reach Bad Kreuznach and we wil push the dirty commies back to their red turf." Barney said.

Radio operator approached Barney and saluted him. "Sir, 1st Brigade 1st Battalion needs our 3rd Battalion to help their attack, Sir"
"Situation is under control here, 3rd Battalion can help" Barney replied.

"Sergeant Johnson take your battalion to meet up 1st Brigade 1st Battalion to assist them on attack Bingen"
"Sir, Yes, Sir" Sergeant Johnson and left right away.

Barney turned back to map.

Move 3rd Battalion 5 hexes to north east along the road then 2 hexes north and engage enemy with 1st Brigade 1st Battalion. Other Battalions will defend Bad Kreuznach.

Week 2 Results

1st Brigade

1st Battalion regrouped and were reinforced with 4th Armored Battalion and supported by 1st and 3rd Artillery Regiments. This force initiated an assault against the town of Bingen and managed to gain a foothold after two days of heavy shelling. They were engaged by Spetsnaz special forces and airborne units who resisted with guerrilla tactics and rockets. They are a determined bunch and remain dislodged from their stronghold in the western part of the town. 1st Armored held the streets but found it difficult to fight off guerrilla attacks on narrow streets rendering most of their activity useless.

Friendly Casualties: -21 unit strength (1st Battalion), -15 unit strength (4th Armored)

Enemy Strength: drop to 51% (8th SGA), -32% (1st Spetsnaz Regiment)

2nd Battalion held at Abmannshsn as a reserve force. Reports from forward scouts indicate airborne elements approaching from the north west bank.

2nd Brigade

4th Battalion held at Bad Kreuznach.

3rd Battalion was supposed to support the assault on Bingen but was called back after the fall of Wiesbaden.

3rd Brigade

5th Battalion with the support of 2nd Armored + 5th Armored (2 companies) and after heavy shelling assaulted Woorstadt and took the town in a day. Forward scouts report airborne elements moving north for a counter attack. It seems as WarPact withdrew some of their forces before we had a chance to attack at full strength.

Friendly Casualties: -5 unit strength (5th Battalion), no losses for armored units

Enemy Strength: drop to 46%

6th Battalion with the support 2 companies of 5th Armored and after heavy shelling pressed the enemy pushing them to the eastern neighborhoods of the town. It'll take another week with the present units at Ingelheim to take the town.

Friendly Casualties: -20 unit strength (6th Battalion), -10 unit strength (5th Armored)

Enemy Strength: drop to 35%
